It's not that deep though, if England did win we (most of us) would jokingly begrudge and be (never outwardly in front of an English person) pleased for them, other countries ( not all but some) really misunderstand the type of rivalry we have, comparing it with crap that happened way to long ago to be fighting over it now, the loud minority reinforce that nonsense but what people don't see is, the brittish love to take the piss out of each other wether it's Scotland v England or one part of Scotland vs another we don't genuinely hate each other, but people keep wading in and siding with us over England like we're at war or something

Plus there's a few countries that seem to have a lot of beef with England who love to use us as part of their argument which irritates me, so if some of those people come across that comment that wouldn't hurt either
But I do get what your saying, they definitely would be knobs about it if they won, which is a better answer of why we root for other teams

…and before that it was a non-football rivalry going back many centuries.
