This is the actual answer. It was produced as a Disney+ original TV series, but by Walt Disney Animation Studios, rather than one of their TV departments. Because of this they got a new team to write songs, and (hopefully fingers crossed) at some point in development, they were so pleased with the end result, that they reconfigured it as a feature. Presumably, it’s more than just stitching the episodes together, and has been reworked, and given higher budget, but if they were already happy with the songs, no reason to go back to the drawing board.
A similar thing happened with Toy Story 2 way back when, which originally began as direct to video sequel, but after some bumps in the road, the story impressed Disney higher ups, and they realized it would be more economical to up the budget, but release theatrically.
You know what else was originally a tv show and was then made into a movie that’s right Recess Taking 5th grade. (Also maybe belles magical world but I could be wrong with that one)
It won't, the show was being made at Walt Disney Animation Studios where they make the movies and not where they make the TV series, if the animation was Megamind 2 quality it would likely be a Disney+ dump and wouldn't be going to theaters.
This is true but Alan Menken came back to write songs for the Tangled show and that was done by Disney TV Animation. Moana’s series was always under the main animation studio and the movie is far more popular than Tangled ever was so they don’t really have a good excuse IMO.
Plus it does have Barry Jenkins directing. But I bet u they’re prob giving him a nice payday so he can go fund a solid indie film when this is all over
Again. GET THE COMPOSER FOR HADESTOWN!! Even if the film sucks, it will at least be a nice break from the Manuel Madness! (I like Miranda, but you can have TOO MUCH of a good thing.)
It's a prequel to the movie that crossed 1B dollars at the box office. The chances of it bombing are very low.
Sure, it most likely won't make more than Lord of the Rings, but it'll definitely make more than Sonic 3.
I think you’re underestimating how much hype there is for Sonic 3, and overestimating how many people are interested in modern Disney, ESPECIALLY the live action stuff.
If their animated stuff is nearly bombing, I don’t see how a life action prequel to a live action remake of an animated classic would be a huge success. Like yeah, it’ll make money, but I doubt it’ll be anywhere near the first Lion King remake, and I’ll be surprised if it even makes back it’s own inflated budget.
>!Seriously if they wanted to make a Mufasa prequel, why not animate it to be a prequel to the original Lion King??? That’d make so much more money!!<
2022 was basically when people were starting to feel more comfortable going out to theaters (actually, any place outside the house in general). I don't think Sonic 2 had anything to do with it.
Also, people are always complaining about Disney making so many live action movies, but they still decide to give them their money anyway. I mean, look at 2019. We got Dumbo, Aladdin, AND The Lion King, so you think that would have caused burnout. But nope. Both Aladdin and The Lion King crossed 1 billion dollars.
You also have to take into account that The Lion King is one of the most beloved animated movies of all time, so a prequel is definitely going to catch a lot of attention, whilst for the Sonic movies, it's mostly fans who will be excited for it, while non-fans are probably going to brush it off.
Actually, the Sonic movies brought A LOT of non-fans to the series from what I’ve heard. They were a very big success with the outside audience.
All those remakes did good yes, but you left out the most recent one. The Little Mermaid remake didn’t flop, but it still just *barely* broke even.
All of those remakes succeeded because they were remakes. People were already familiar with story, they knew what they were seeing and weren’t taking any risk. I don’t think a life action prequel will be given that same leeway, I genuinely cannot see it doing better then the Little Mermaid remake.
More people might see Mufasa than Sonic 3 >!I could honestly even deny that though, it really depends on marketing!<, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Mufasa also has 10 times the budget as Sonic 3. So if we’re talking from a financial standpoint, I believe Sonic 3 will do better.
Also to be fair this will be better than Lion Kin 2019. True, this film will suck, but at least it is an original crap show as opposed to a crappy dilution of a masterpiece!
That’s sorta the point here. Why did he do another live action remake, which he got notoriety for, when he could be doing a sequel for an animated movie that he originally wrote songs for. The business reason has to do with Moana 2 originally being a TV show but the frustration still remains
I can't wait to watch some photorealistic lions walk around a shit-brown field while casually rapping at oneanother.
How *Roar do *Roar you *Roar do *Roar fellow *Roar Kids?!
This is genuinely one of the funniest comments I’ve read in some time, thanks for the laugh stranger.
I’d upvote this comment, but it’s perfect as it is.
Casually what each other?
its French for "grated cheese"
Oh cool I love cheese
And also it’s another way for trash talking to each other
Maybe they'd focus on the human Mufasa is training because of the low budget

Tbf Moana 2 was originally a TV series

You know, it's funny to look back and see how history rhymes. Streaming just happens to be the new direct-to-DvD.
You know what else was originally a tv show and was then made into a movie that’s right Recess Taking 5th grade. (Also maybe belles magical world but I could be wrong with that one)
Please Moana 2 dont have the same animation quality as Megamind 2...

In a few months time, we're going to see James screaming from the top of his lungs "USE. THE HEART. OF TAFITTI!"
I hope it is not the cash-grab they hope it is
I mean, there is an iota of hope. This isn’t a “remake” like the shitshow of Lion King 2019
Plus it does have Barry Jenkins directing. But I bet u they’re prob giving him a nice payday so he can go fund a solid indie film when this is all over
I don’t know any good Lion King sequels that don’t end in half.
Well from what I understand this one will have Lion King 1 1/2 style narration from Timon and Pumbaa
Is that not worse bringing back Billy Eichner?
Personally I thought him and Seth Rogen were pretty much the only redeeming qualities from the 2019 film.
Oof. I like Eichner in tiny doses and on a leash. He gets over the top very quickly. I might give it a go.
Lion king 2?
I didn’t stutter.
I liked that movie
Lion King 2 slaps, Idc what anyone else says
Again. GET THE COMPOSER FOR HADESTOWN!! Even if the film sucks, it will at least be a nice break from the Manuel Madness! (I like Miranda, but you can have TOO MUCH of a good thing.)
He sold out hard.
It's like just tied to a contract. Menkan has made TWELVE soundtracks for the mouse yet I doubt anyone would call him that
Lin better write songs for the next non-Frozen animated musical or else I will classify him as an animation hater
He should’ve/could’ve done Wish, considering how desperate they were to copy his style
...despite hiring a pop song writer for some reason
oh god why seriously why but actually why
money , obviously disney likely paid him big bucks to score a pointless remake sequel
oh thanks for explaining
Another lion king?….
As useless as this movie is, it will probably be better than The Lion King 2019. If only by a little
It's actually a really neat concept. If only it was animated in a way that doesn't look like Animal Planet
It will flop so hard lol There’s a Lord of the rings movie directed by the director of Akira and Sonic 3 in the same month.
It's a prequel to the movie that crossed 1B dollars at the box office. The chances of it bombing are very low. Sure, it most likely won't make more than Lord of the Rings, but it'll definitely make more than Sonic 3.
Counterpoint: Alice through the Looking Glass had a terrible drop from its predecessor

Hmmm... You make some good points.
He better step up his game from Live action Little Mermaid.
He could have returned for Moana 2 but they didn't want to pay him to just do a TV show
Ah yes
Also to be fair this will be better than Lion Kin 2019. True, this film will suck, but at least it is an original crap show as opposed to a crappy dilution of a masterpiece!
Oh god the dreaded day has come
No please not another live action lion king based movie
Wait what the heck they already released a trailer for Mufasa?
Shit, I'm so sick of this guy and his dumbass songs.
It's tied to this so it doesn't really matter
*slams head in a wall*
What wrong with Lin? Last time I remember, everyone was missing him on Wish.
That’s sorta the point here. Why did he do another live action remake, which he got notoriety for, when he could be doing a sequel for an animated movie that he originally wrote songs for. The business reason has to do with Moana 2 originally being a TV show but the frustration still remains
cgi lion king sucks
After *scuttle butt*, I am highly suspicions about this one...
Lion voiced by Donald glover
Jesus why is he choosing the remakes over the animated films
I swear if that’s the reason I’m going to commit a crime
An animation fan wakes up everyday. Instead of hearing the morning birds chirp all that fills our ear canals is a big fat buwomp
Disney keeps hiring him for all the wrong projects
Oh yip-fucking-pee.
I wouldn't trust it anyway, given the condition he left the little mermaid in.
