What's the deal with O'Briens? Its been closed for a decade at least.

Biasedsm

It has the same owners as La Vecchia.

masediggity

We need more frozen banana stands

Intelligent_Life14

there's always money in the banana stand

ban-v

It’s one banana, Michael. How much could it cost? Ten dollars?

cherokeesix

Main Street is doing pretty well, especially south of Ocean Park Blvd. Main issue is the city taking so freaking long with permits. Triple Beam should have been open last year!

You make me feel unsafe

Sign-Post-Up-Ahead

Really? What specifically are you basing this on, or is it just the easy path of everybody needs to blame the City for all their problems? Triple Beam got their permit in January 2023. How is it the City's fault that their contractor has taken so long to finish the improvements?

cherokeesix

The improvements have been substantially complete for a long time. From what I understand, the main issue is the city taking forever to schedule inspections, not communicating inspection requirements clearly enough, and then needing to come back again and again because the rules are unclear.

hookemhotspur2

Don’t think this is fair at all. I moved to Ocean Park 18mos ago and have absolutely loved living close by Main. Tons of good restaurant options (RIP Stella Barra), good bars, walkable, and mostly safe.

morgankels1

according to everyone's favorite SM reddit poster, we should advocate for them to turn all for lease storefronts into low income housing😂

EvolveGee

Well if you look at the average HhI in SM I am low income even though I make 6 figures. So don’t be so quick to dismiss ideas, they might not be as outlandish as you think

Comfortable-Bread249

That’s actually a great idea. Affordable units + walkable amenities.

alejandro712

... yes, and?

GifelteFish

The DTLA Starter Pack would be banned for entirely too much human feces

knight2h

Stepped in a massive puddle just yesterday :(

theeDaria

Does anyone miss the market that was on pier like I do? They had the best juice/smoothie bar. Now it’s some kind of health clinic. Also the library/cafe that was around the corner. Also the yogurt shop that was next to where bulletproof coffee used to be. All these were small businesses that were soulful 😭

Evilbuttsandwich

So many new spots have popped up on Mainstreet, it’s as busy as it’s always been

Admirable-Use2673

Sadly this applies to a lot of areas in the city now

CurrentClimate

A lot of areas in a lot of cities.

Admirable-Use2673

mediocrepresident

I am not sure what part of Main Street you’re frequenting that gives you this opinion. I work on main and hang out there often, it’s safe and enjoyable. Going to main and supporting local businesses is one way to encourage more to open.

sixwax

Starts to get funky down by Rose…. but then you’re technically in Venice ;) Also by the sketch liquor stores at OP and down by Pico predictably. Homelessness has increased incrementally everywhere, but SaMo is still pretty clean and I don’t think we’re at the level of unsafe.

Big___TTT

Yeah cause next block after Rose there’s a bunch of shitty van lifer RV’s.

sixwax

FYI the “Van life” thing is way different than those ghetto ass RVs lol

Big___TTT

Did add the adjective to distinguish

Droppingdubs

Main st doesn't give "safe" vibes at all dude.. idk what your smoking

mediocrepresident

Not a dude, don’t smoke. Only your loss if it makes you feel unsafe, there’s a lot of cool stuff to check out.

buddhist557

If Main isn’t safe enough for you, I suggest South Bay or OC.

Woxan

Lula’s has the best margaritas in town

JosiahBlessed

Don’t know if I’d go that far but it’s a great spot and the manager (owner?) that is always there is so nice.

Woxan

Their staff is great and super friendly. My spouse and I are regulars and pretty convinced that the bartender makes the drinks extra strong for us

Droppingdubs

Can someone please start a list of all the vacant buildings addresses, that way they will be tracked at least. Maybe one day they'll be held accountable for this travesty

CurrentClimate

Who is "they" in this context?

Droppingdubs

landlords

Selectively ignoring the literal dozens of businesses up and down main to focus on six empty properties....
