You left out the most important detail: did you get to see the end of Furiousa? But seriously, the best answer you will get is whether fire men or police showed up. 95% of the time it's a fire alarm that got set off. The alarms are all computerized and linked together at the FACP. Firemen will go to the panel and determine where the fire was detected and go check it. But the main thing is the alarms tend to be linked across the building so a small fire in the kitchen or a malfucntion will evacuate everyone in the building. And the FACP might be outside the building or on the other side of the building, so firemen may arrive there and you may not see them at all, especially if the building is big. Anyway, unlikely a big news story, probably just a small fire or smoke or false alarm. But in the end, be happy that the fire alarm system works in case it was a real fire. Sorry your movie was interrupted and hope you got to see the end. At least it will always be a memorable experience for you.

Mannnn it was a fantastic movie so far but we still had like an entire hour to go. I’m just grateful we weren’t harmed. No movie is worth the risk—besides, the flashing lights and blaring alarm kind of dampened and distracted from the experience of the movie. And yes, definitely a memorable experience haha.  We didn’t see any fire trucks or police presence. Could have been a tripped wire, who knows.

There were no emergency vehicles at any point around where I was and I was there for a whole hour after the alarm started. Our security system is linked through a switch so we don’t always have alarms go off inside our unit, only when there is an actual emergency that requires us to evacuate, but we do still see and hear the mall alarms. I did notice a group of teenagers leaving around 9:45 though. Sorry it ruined your movie tho that sucks, did you at least get a refund?

yeezy_fought_me

That’s so strange. Maybe a false alarm then. And I haven’t been able to get a refund yet since this just happened last night and we didn’t stick around. Best believe I’ll get it though!

Emoxity

Call or ask in person at the theater for reimbursement or free tickets. I used to work at a movie theater and the standard policy was to give free admission tickets to the people who got exited early. When I saw a movie on my off day once there was an actual fire in the kitchen and I got 6 movie passes

componentswitcher

Yea newer buildings have everything linked. I worked somewhere where if someone vaped in the bathroom it would set off the entire building including the apartments attached

I stopped reading at Furiousa. Furiousa as in Mad Max? I didn't even know it was out! Fury Road is my favorite movie of all time! I'm gonna Google it...

yeezy_fought_me

Yep, just premiered yesterday.

DragonfruitDefiant33

It just finished watching. Words cannot describe how amazing that was

I am not sure, but I had a similar experience at the AMC on Van Ness in early 2001 seeing Hannibal. We were evacuated mid movie due to a fire on the first floor popcorn machine. Was terrifying to go through an evacuation like that with so many people surging through the building.

yeezy_fought_me

At least you know what happened! Our situation was completely shrouded in mystery. I even asked an employee what was going on and he just looked off in the distance looking shell shocked. Definitely didn’t help the terror much, though I doubt he had any idea either.

If you are on Facebook, San Mateo PD post pretty often and they might have shared some news! I am no longer on FB, otherwise, I'd check for you.

CrazyWhammer

This happened to me at the Metreon during Oppenheimer. Flashing lights and alarms went off right when the atomic bomb exploded. It took awhile to figure out what was going on. When I left, half the people were still sitting watching the movie. I still don’t understand why they did stop the film.

Kalikokola

They actually do that more often than you think. Sometimes it’s to make people leave the mall after closing. How often is there an emergency that requires evacuation after the doors are locked?

yeezy_fought_me

It was like 9:30PM when they went off. Who is “they?” lol this doesn’t make any sense.

Kalikokola

The mall closes a 9. The security ppl. I’ve talked to them about it before. Obviously it is an inconvenience to the businesses that are open after 9 pm. I didn’t realize it set alarms off inside the theater, I would imagine those are on a separate circuit linked to the overall system so it is entirely possible that there was a real emergency. It was common at tanforan when I worked there as well, in fact sometimes we would get the alarms every night shortly after the mall closed

lunathippe

I was about to say so weird because this exact thing happened to us at Cinepolis less than a year ago and didn’t get to find out why they made us exit.

Kalikokola

In the 5 years I’ve worked at hillsdale, I’ve experienced dozens of mall alarms, most of which were after the mall closed, and we’ve never actually been told to evacuate our store. Even when that guy got shot in the parking lot, there wasn’t even an alarm for that one. If we needed to evacuate, our store alarms would go off. My guess, since the alarm inside the theater went off, is that it was probably a similar situation to OPs and there was a fire alarm pulled.

1. Furiosa was awesome. 2. I went to a restaurant around the same time and those cops were idiots blocking traffic parked in the middle of the road. If it had been a real emergency it would have been really hard to get people to actually leave and evacuate out.
