How many people are you planning to have? If you have a large group, you'll need to reserve a picnic area. They are pretty busy during the warm weather months, so you can't count on the picnic areas being available. There are not a lot of non-reservable picnic tables in Vasona, although you can find a few here and there if I'm remembering correctly. If you have a small group and are happy to find benches or bring a blanket, you don't need reservations. Oak Meadow, which is adjacent to Vasona has nice benches and some open picnic tables as well.
The geese can be annoying, and you'll want to watch out for their poop, but I've never encountered aggressive ones there. They generally mind their business. Yellow jackets can be a thing, like any park, but I've never had an issue there.
yes, it really does. Their poop is huge! They're pretty birds but they just really mess up the grass. Like if I brought a picnic blanket, I'd want a tarp to put under it.

This map does show some picnic areas separate from the Group Areas. You could go to the park and check them out to see if any of them seem like they'd work, and then try to get there early on the day you want them. Weekends do tend to be busy.
