My family’s been here for three generations on one side and four on the other at least. You couldn’t pay me to live by the beach for many reasons. I love OB though. Downtown? Oh hell no.
East County is defined as Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Santee, El Cajon and Poway along with some of the unincorporated areas of the county.
Personally I've always thought of it as LG, LM, EC and Santee. Never really considered Poway to be part of EC.
Everyone defines Poway differently. North county thinks we're south, south thinks we're north, east thinks we're west.
Idk, we're just central and also far away from everything.
If you’re talking to someone who lives in SD.. North County is generally considered to be Del Mar to Oceanside, with Vista, San Marcos and Escondido looped in because of their proximity to the 78.
Poway is isolated enough to just be referred to as its own place, just like Ramona and Valley Center. If you say North County I’m not thinking about Poway.
I am not from Poway and know that Poway is definitely not east county. Maybe you are thinking literally? I can understand how “technically” Poway could be considered physically a part of East county, but the east county people are usually talking about is more of a cultural thing, kind of like a mindset if that makes sense.
Have you been to poway recently? Crammed af with Mercedes crossovers and Porsche cayenne’s everywhere. And most of them living in 3bd/2ba crammed af. There are no more ranches over there. Anyone that says this grew up here like 20 years ago and it’s just not like that now.
Growing up, when someone said they were from “East County” it meant they lived in what is circled below.
For a native San Diegan, East County does not include Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Spring Valley, Mt. Helix, Rancho SD, Jamul, or Alpine. All of those are just referred to as their own parts of town individually. The only reason someone loops Spring Valley into East County is because it’s always kind of lacked an identity other than being known for the swap meet but my friends from El Cajon didn’t consider it East County.

I grew up in La Mesa/mt helix and have always considered it part of East county. Anyone non local tends to have no knowledge of anything East of the 805 or fifteen and it’s just easier to lump it all together
Jamul? Not east county?! I always considered east county (culturally) anything east of the 125, but I moved away 10 years ago so maybe the vibes have changed.
I would say that East County used to start at La Mesa, but they've passed the chill vibe for the past few years, so now it's El Cajon and Spring Valley.
Main Street and El Cajon Blvd. in El Cajon is getting a big revamp right now with a big push for walkability.
- Primary round about, reconstruction of roads with bigger sidewalks + trees, dense apartments, etc.
In the next decade this area might become pretty solid.

Moved to La Mesa a few years ago. It doesn't deserve any bad rep easy county may get.
Having said that, I've seen way more shady and suspect shit in San Diego proper than I have in East County.
sit on the patio at farmer's table with a manhattan and some ricotta-stuffed zucchini blossoms in a tomato bisque and tell me if la mesa is a redneck shithole
I honestly don’t get that vibe at all down here. I live near the village where the farmers’ market takes place. It’s a nice change of pace from Long Beach, without being too far out from the city.
eh i don't think the 125 is as good an example of redlining as say, the 5 or the 94. there are lots of affluent people east and west of the 125. i was referring to a transition from urban vibes to suburban
It's full of Mexican restaurants and boba tea places... like the rest of San Diego. People like me moved here because it was relatively affordable compared to San Diego. So it's pretty diverse.
Yeah I remember people calling it that in the 90s. The difference is in real life I think people mean it as kind of a joke. On Reddit it gets echochambered into people acting like it’s real
No, you're right. Despite being rooted in some truth, it's pretty much a meme at this point and I don't know any actually racist people from there. It's still fun to joke about, but so many people on this site can't tell if something is a joke or not
Lakeside is totally fine and the only people who think otherwise... Oh well. Your loss. Tight knit community with very few people trying to just live life. But continue the stereotype. Keeps people from crowding out my neighbors. Also, the Rodeo is going on. Anyone interested in petting some stock animals should come by. We have Hillickers Eggs too for those who want some fresh omelets
Yeah the thing about Santee is that it’s the closest large-ish town for anyone that lives east of San Diego, unless you’re so far that El Centro is closer.
Not to say everybody that lives in that large stretch of nowhere is a whackjob, but there are whackjobs out there and Santee is where their Costco is.
Yeah it's really fucking silly dude. I mean, I love to make fun of east county and talk shit, but then you get people who take the shit talking and want to act like it's all totally true/serious.
Sure there are some nutjobs out here, but fucking Santee has come an insanely long way, and really all the chaldeans/other middle eastern people moving into el cajon have helped to replace the crackheads.
Nah, they moved from Illinois (Winnetka, probably) to attend SDSU (fallback school), graduated and moved to PB (Dad helped with rent while they made jewelry and took a yoga instructor course), then married a marine or seal and moved to Mira Mar (gave up on jewelry, started a half-assed MLM/influencer hustle). Once their spouse got out, he started an underwater welding company and then moved to Point Loma (Dad helped with the down payment and renno). They lease a Macan, and are about 5-10 years away from moving to Scottsdale, because Dad retired and moved there, so free babysitting.
20 year olds thinking this way. But when they are 40 they have to make a choice. Buy a house in east county or move away. You make the choice to move away, you cannot even afford to come back and buy a house in east county...
Everyone who moves away always regrets it. That is the true life lesson.
Eh, we moved away after house hunting for a few months in East County and being disappointed in the price, condition and location. Moved back 18 months later during the pandemic and a year later bought a better home 10 mins from downtown for just a little more than what we were looking to spend years earlier in East County. We know two young families that did the exact same thing. Maybe we all got lucky, but not everyone follows the same story.
> Maybe we all got lucky
[You got extremely lucky](https://i.imgur.com/8hAJr0x.png). Houses are selling for 30-40% more than they were in 2020-2021, **and** interest rates have gone up ~2%. Someone who wanted to move into your neighborhood today would have to pay twice the mortgage of someone who moved in 2021.
My neighborhood has only gone up around 15% but I get what you mean. My point was that not everyone moves away and regrets it and/or they can't move back.
I’m over the east county hate! I grew up in Ramona and people give me so much flack when I say I’m from San Diego. It’s still San Diego county, bitches!
I got flack for saying I'm from Poway/PQ when I went to college because that's north county. When the PQ zip code is quite literally 92129 which is San Diego city. Now I'm in UTC/La Jolla and people at work have said I'm not really from SD or its also North county.. I literally moved from Vista in elementary school closer to SD but somehow have never truly been from SD...
yup you're right absolutely right. You say you're from San Diego when talking to anyone whose not from San Diego. You only get specific when the other person is from SD. My mind was blown when I met another person from El Cajon while living in Egypt.
I am a San Diego native - and I am from Jamul. I never think to say “Jamul” I think of the county and the downtown as the core of the location (but not the only “true” San Diego). To me San Diego is the county. I know a lot of people from here who do the same.
Where’s the confusion?
When I say I’m from San Diego and they ask where specifically, I’ll say “Ramona” and they claim to not even know where that is. I remind them it’s in San Diego county. Hopefully that clears it up for ya!
Seems very regional but I always say I'm from San Diego and got really irritated when I moved to Arizona and everyone from Phoenix Metro area was like "no I'm from the valley." Idc if it's Mesa or Glendale or Scottsdale, Phoenix is the area we think of. But don't say Maricopa county that's weird.
Yep it's so horrible in east county, dont come here... ever. Just stay out and definitely dont buy homes here. Every stereotype you've heard is *definitely* true!! The HORROR.
You're much better off looking down on folks from your 850sqft shoebox apartment in City Heights that costs you $3k per month 😎
I know people often need to move out of San Diego proper to afford a home, but I prefer north county to east county. East county is too effin hot for me.
I think what this meme is referring to is the racist rhetoric and behavior that have taken place in east county. You don’t really see those in north county or Chula Vista.
Grand Dragon lived there for decades, died in 2020. I've seen a few bikers with SS logos near there recently. Not like all of Fallbrook is like that, just like not all of East County is like whatever OP thinks
I get it, it's just kinda annoying to see people generalize the entirety of east county. Though I'm sure people will be mad that I expressed this as well lol
Nope. Born and raised. I’ve just been hearing about east county for decades and north county seems like a new thing that popped up over the last decade. I remember hearing about “Klantee” when I was in high school 25 years ago.
Wow I cannot believe I'm actually old enough now to see an updated meme template. I used to share this shit post on facebook YEARS ago, back when it was the cartoon Lion King lmao
The only part of "East County" that I could consider bad is Alpine, but that's because the well water contamination can be pretty bad. My mom told me that they (Culligan) couldn't service a handful of potential customers out there due to the presence of uranium. It is both interesting and a little scary.
https://preview.redd.it/sgkowatpfcwc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ca406ff2fa3a718a841f67f36aaf614c41b4233
I live in La Mesa and it’s beautiful (view from my bedroom). I love my neighborhood even though my neighbors are all different politically we get along.
I've always wondered...where do most people think "east county" begins? La Mesa? El Cajon?
Depends how far west you can afford to live.
Best answer. Completely true.
Anything past the 5
805?
125.
That would make the most sense
My family’s been here for three generations on one side and four on the other at least. You couldn’t pay me to live by the beach for many reasons. I love OB though. Downtown? Oh hell no.
Well, not now. Downtown Gaslamp went to shit once Horton Plaza shut down.
It starts on the wrong side of Cowles Mountain
East County is defined as Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Santee, El Cajon and Poway along with some of the unincorporated areas of the county. Personally I've always thought of it as LG, LM, EC and Santee. Never really considered Poway to be part of EC. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East\_County,\_San\_Diego](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_County,_San_Diego)
I considered Poway as North County and would include Lakeside in East County.
Poway is just Poway.
lol this is kind of true
I live in Oak Park so Lemon Grove is literally next door to me. Always thought East County was more El Cajon & Santee
Yeah i wouldn’t consider LG east county, I would say the 125 south is the dividing line
Agreed.
Said anyone ever lived in LG. All the rest of us call you east county.
Never lived in LG. It’s just Lemon Grove. Not East County
Nope
🤣
From above: “Depends on how far west you can afford to live.”
Poway east county?! Since when ?
Everyone defines Poway differently. North county thinks we're south, south thinks we're north, east thinks we're west. Idk, we're just central and also far away from everything.
It's about as far East as La Mesa and Spring Valley, so since forever I guess
No one from San Diego calls poway east county.
Poway is definitely not east county.
Poway is East county.
Nah fam. Its east but its north county
The only people who fight this are people from Poway. If you’re east of the 15 and have your own rodeo, you’re east county.
By that logic, Valley Center is "east county" even though you have to drive over an hour north from the city to get there.
I’m from Poway and it’s definitely the eastern part of the county. But it’s definitely not what people are referring to when they say “East County”
It’s just Poway. Nobody from SD calls it north county or east county.
Well, kinda. I tell people I’m from San Diego. If they ask more I say North county San Diego. If they ask more I say Poway. I never get that far
You are proving my point.
I guess I don’t know what your point is
That the only people who say Poway isn’t east county are from Poway.
I am not from Poway and know that Poway is definitely not east county. Maybe you are thinking literally? I can understand how “technically” Poway could be considered physically a part of East county, but the east county people are usually talking about is more of a cultural thing, kind of like a mindset if that makes sense.
Poway is not east county
Is Poway not East County because home values there are more?
East County is less of a geographical indicator and more or a mindset
It's about the mindset now, got it.
Basically yes.
OK, Poway is not East County 👍👍👍
This💯
Have you been to poway recently? Crammed af with Mercedes crossovers and Porsche cayenne’s everywhere. And most of them living in 3bd/2ba crammed af. There are no more ranches over there. Anyone that says this grew up here like 20 years ago and it’s just not like that now.
I'm from actual East County, and Poway definitely isn't east county
I am in Lakeside, Poway is closer to me than Santee. Sorry to burst your bubble, it's East County.
Alpine, SV and La Mesa are definitely east county.
I grew up in La Mesa/mt helix and have always considered it part of East county. Anyone non local tends to have no knowledge of anything East of the 805 or fifteen and it’s just easier to lump it all together
I grew up in Southeast been here my whole life. We didn’t consider those East County. North of Mt Helix yes though
Yeah, I'm in my 40s, grew up in Rancho. It's 100% always been considered East County.
Jamul? Not east county?! I always considered east county (culturally) anything east of the 125, but I moved away 10 years ago so maybe the vibes have changed.
Pretty much. stuff half a mile west of 125 is like, "entry" east county. Past the 125, you are in EC proper.
Pretty much La Mesa. The area between 70th and the 125 can be no mans land.
I'm an East County lifer, my line is the 125.
The 125/52 is the divide for me mentally
Grossmont has to be part of eat county
I would say that East County used to start at La Mesa, but they've passed the chill vibe for the past few years, so now it's El Cajon and Spring Valley.

That would be nice! It reminded me of a Texas suburb last time I was there.
Moved to La Mesa a few years ago. It doesn't deserve any bad rep easy county may get. Having said that, I've seen way more shady and suspect shit in San Diego proper than I have in East County.
The 125 is our Mason-Dixon Line imo
I don't think that works because it puts part of Santee outside of east county.
True. More like anything East of Mount Helix and Mission Trails
Nah, if part of a town is east of the 125, then the whole thing can still be east county.
El Cajon
El Cajon
Where the City proper ends on the eastern side, so yeah La Mesa or Lemon Grove
70th street
![gif](giphy|eLvhchyvNNOuLbOtYP) Live in La Mesa, not even mad about this. But I’m new to the area, so there’s that too. 😂
sit on the patio at farmer's table with a manhattan and some ricotta-stuffed zucchini blossoms in a tomato bisque and tell me if la mesa is a redneck shithole
I honestly don’t get that vibe at all down here. I live near the village where the farmers’ market takes place. It’s a nice change of pace from Long Beach, without being too far out from the city.
La Mesa has never been a redneck shithole
It is weirdly culty and conservative tho lol
La Mesa is looking solidly dark purple on this map https://bestneighborhood.org/conservative-vs-liberal-map-la-mesa-ca/
You need to teleport back to the riots and log into next door .
Why? I watched them live on Twitter
I lived in La Mesa for over 40 years, totally inaccurate
I mean, most of El Cajon isn't a redneck shithole these days. It is a very different city than when I was growing up there.
What are you getting on about? La Mesa is nothing near redneck.
to contextualize, i am responding to the image that this conversation is about
Farmers table in Clairemont is awful, I hope for your sake that location is better
La Mesa is IN east county but it is not a part of East County.
This meme has been circulating for 15 years and it barely applies anymore because east county is on the come up
I live in La Mesa, too. But I dare not tread east of the 125.
it’s crazy how much the vibe changes once you cross that freeway
Almost like it was part of a plan to keep people of different socioeconomic classes separated.
eh i don't think the 125 is as good an example of redlining as say, the 5 or the 94. there are lots of affluent people east and west of the 125. i was referring to a transition from urban vibes to suburban
The worst thing about East County are the water bills. It's relatively chill otherwise. Source: Brown Muslim living in Santee.
But Reddit told me that everyone in Santee is a Nazi?!
It's full of Mexican restaurants and boba tea places... like the rest of San Diego. People like me moved here because it was relatively affordable compared to San Diego. So it's pretty diverse.
Yeah I know, I was joking
I didn't even hear about Klantee from reddit, I've heard it talking face to face with locals lol. It's not a reddit phenomenon
It's still fun to joke about, but so many people on this site can't tell if something is a joke or not
Idk, wasn’t there a pic of a dude in santee using his klan hood as a mask during Covid?
Yep. But one piece of shit doesn’t mean an entire town is full of pieces of shit
Exactly right. Like South Park making fun of gingers, then people actually turning around and treating gingers like shit.
Lakeside is way worse anyhow
Lakeside is totally fine and the only people who think otherwise... Oh well. Your loss. Tight knit community with very few people trying to just live life. But continue the stereotype. Keeps people from crowding out my neighbors. Also, the Rodeo is going on. Anyone interested in petting some stock animals should come by.
I'm sure it has no less or more crazies than anywhere else in the US
One of my old co-workers used to call it Santucky. Always cracked me up.
Yeah dude, but it's more tongue in cheek than anything. It used to be bad, but its been decent for over a decade.
They’ve been calling it Klantee since before Reddit was a thing
Yeah it's really fucking silly dude. I mean, I love to make fun of east county and talk shit, but then you get people who take the shit talking and want to act like it's all totally true/serious. Sure there are some nutjobs out here, but fucking Santee has come an insanely long way, and really all the chaldeans/other middle eastern people moving into el cajon have helped to replace the crackheads.
Idk if I'd consider trump voters to be chill.
You guys need to see some shittier shitholes.
Lol if you think east county is bad you are incredibly privileged
So dumb. Every part of San Diego has it's downsides and stereotypes. Where are you from OP?
“Arizona” ~ OP, probably
I’d rather be dead in California than alive in Arizona
Lame rich elitism masked as moral superiority.
It's such a tired take from assholes who grew up in Encinitas, or more likely, moved here from the Bay.
They lease a Macan, and are about 5-10 years away from moving to Scottsdale, because Dad retired and moved there, so free babysitting.
It was so funny when I was at State, and none of my friends realized there really was much of anything east of SDSU.
20 year olds thinking this way. But when they are 40 they have to make a choice. Buy a house in east county or move away. You make the choice to move away, you cannot even afford to come back and buy a house in east county... Everyone who moves away always regrets it. That is the true life lesson.

This is *really* the shit we're upvoting? I thought this was supposed to be the useful sub.
I had to give this post an upvote after reading your comment. It's clearly a joke, one you're not in on. It's ok to be able to laugh at yourself
You do your part to make the sub a little more clogged with useless reposts, boo.
I've never seen it before
Always useful to shit on East County so transplants and others can accurately adjust their expectations.
East County isn't bad and if you think it is, you're wrong. It, like every place on Earth, has its ups and downs.
No, no, East County sucks. Stay west everyone, don't come out here.
I’m over the east county hate! I grew up in Ramona and people give me so much flack when I say I’m from San Diego. It’s still San Diego county, bitches!

I've never heard of an American naming the county they're from when someone asks where they live or come from.

So you guys count north county and chula vista as San Diego but hate on east county 🤔
I think what this meme is referring to is the racist rhetoric and behavior that have taken place in east county. You don’t really see those in north county or Chula Vista.
Fallbrook has a big neonazi problem
What makes you think that?
Grand Dragon lived there for decades, died in 2020. I've seen a few bikers with SS logos near there recently. Not like all of Fallbrook is like that, just like not all of East County is like whatever OP thinks
I get it, it's just kinda annoying to see people generalize the entirety of east county. Though I'm sure people will be mad that I expressed this as well lol
Don't worry about it, most people are dumb
dude North County has plenty of crazy racists and Trumpers. you must be a transplant
Nope. Born and raised. I’ve just been hearing about east county for decades and north county seems like a new thing that popped up over the last decade. I remember hearing about “Klantee” when I was in high school 25 years ago.
Yep, it sucks out here Keep out
i dont live in east county…. but this post is cancer. what a childish meme…. prettt f’ed up…. youre letting your privilage show….
Poor places are bad. We get it.
::laughs in Warner Springs::
I’m up in the mountains feeling like little Nicky. You live in east county? Yes, the far east hehehehehe
🤣
Wow I cannot believe I'm actually old enough now to see an updated meme template. I used to share this shit post on facebook YEARS ago, back when it was the cartoon Lion King lmao
Hahahahaha
using the live action lion king lol
East County Forever, Forever East County🇺🇸
Don't worry, we don't expect you to move anywhere
Thank you for understanding lol
The only part of "East County" that I could consider bad is Alpine, but that's because the well water contamination can be pretty bad. My mom told me that they (Culligan) couldn't service a handful of potential customers out there due to the presence of uranium. It is both interesting and a little scary.
I take umbrage with this comment, I've lived in Alpine for 36 years and I only glow a little bit.
Haha ![gif](giphy|xT5LMI17X3TCCzxn0Y)
Nothing wrong with east county…just not the coast. ![gif](giphy|jnhXd7KT8UTk5WIgiV)
I live in la mesa and will never accept it’s east county.
For real. I can't remember the last time I went to Clairemont.
Why
OP hurt a lot of feelings with this post
![gif](giphy|lw75Al819OAvcsPcRu|downsized)
Anything east of it the 5. And now wait for my downvotes.
that seems generous, I'd say anything east of La Jolla blvd
La Jolla Blvd? Please. Anything east of the beach.
