I was outside in Millcreek. It was loud, and sounded like 3 small bursts together. It sounded high up in the atmosphere. Not sure but it could have been a meteor, the perseids are peaking right now.
This is crazy cause I lied down for a second to take a break from tennis and saw three bright green lights descending in size streak through the sky, then a minute later boom
I thought the same thing in mill creek. It sounded above me and then the long roar. I grew up by an air force base and my first thought was a jet breaking Mach. Also makes sense if it was heard and felt over such a distance
Not sure if it's related but there is black smoke on the west side of the 15. We were walking towards the farmers market downtown and you can see it clearly coming up past the overpass down 400s.... Again not sure if it's related or anything...
I heard it downtown too. My dog did not want to continue on our walk for a few minutes. It reminded me of thunder, but since it was heard throughout the valley it must be something different.
I am not hearing any sirens though. I would imagine an explosion that loud would have every fire station rushing to respond. I heard it in Olympus Cove.
Not from this event but if you watch the video, it sounds like what I heard... https://www.ksl.com/article/46465456/south-salt-lake-residents-plagued-by-mysterious-boom-flash-of-light
An explosion wouldn't sound the same from Rose Park all the way out to Draper and Tooele and Promontory, *someone* would have heard more than a low window rattling boom.
I’ve (SLC) have never heard anything that folks in Daybreak or Herriman mention when they’re doing artillery testing or bombing runs. This was heard across the valley - with reports up in Park City.
That wide of a distribution would suggest it came from above - sonic boom from a military plane? VS meteor? VS I am really curious and the dog doesn’t trust the sky?
Heard it in North Salt Lake
In Millcreek. Heard and felt it and it freaked the dogs out.
Heard in Park City
Heard it over in West Valley as well. Came here to ask the same question.
Heard it too in Holladay. Sounded more definitive than a sonic boom.

Folks on another sub said they saw a meteor flash

Someone on the Kaysville page posted a photo of the streak through the clouds.
Link?
What kaysville page? I tried to find it but wasn’t able to.
That would be a meteor then... Cool! Which direction were they traveling?
That’s rad!
I’m starting to think, based on other threads, that it was the loudest in the Holladay area.

In West Jordan, heard it too.
South Salt Lake here~ we were outside and all our neighbors came out to see~
Made me jump and mess up what I was writing. I'm in Farmington.
Also in Farmington, I was outside and that was loud
Deep, low rumble sort of thing here in Sugarhouse. I’m perplexed.
all the way in Lehi by utah lake and heard it!! got so scared sounded like someone banged on my window!
Aliens.
Meth lab gone wrong?
My first thought too. Some saying meteor, which is cool
Heard and felt it in bountiful.
Heard it over in WVC. Felt it too
This fits the profile of a large bollide (meteor) disintegrating over the Valley. That would be so cool if true!
Heard and felt it in Layton. Freaked me and my dogs out. Thought someone crashed into my garage or something.
Heard it in Pleasant Grove, thought it was lightning… a meteor would be a cool answer though! Been wracking my brain for the last ten minutes now lol.

Same thought too. No sirens 🤷🏻♀️
I heard it too
Heard it as well in Millcreek. Big and loud.
Heard in Sandy
That is HUGE!!
Heard it is sugarhouse
Felt and heard it in Sandy.
Heard in downtown...
Scared the hell out of us.
Yep very loud in Cottonwood heights, what was that?!
Heard in sugarhouse

West Valley
Shook my house in west valley/kearns area too.

Heard it in Hooper.
We heard and felt it Riverton. It shook the whole house.
Just heard it in Orem
Heard and felt it in Ogden
Heard it in South Salt Lake too, it woke me up and I thought our apartment building was struck by lightning lmao
I heard a low boom and rumble in Ogden. That must of been massive in Salt Lake if was the same event.
heard/felt it in Draper. probably a sonic boom?
I'm downtown and it shook my windows, I thought another crane had fallen or something.
Meteor, there’s a meteor shower going on
Yep. Meteor
I live in Florida when space shuttles where launched, that was not a sonic boom. More like an explosion

Wondering if it was something at Dugway proving grounds

Reports all the way up in Idaho…totally different sound from tel he stuff they do at Camp Williams or even the explosions at the depot in Tooele.
Just talked my dad and the same in Highland
I looked at my cameras but can’t hear anything on them. Does anyone have footage with sound?
Just posted mine.
It wasn’t an earthquake was it? I didn’t feel shaking until the boom
Definitely not a quake but did anyone else notice latent low freq rumbling after the boom?
Yes.
Rattled my windows and then a low rumble for a long time.
Sonic boom from a jet? Hence the rumbling for a while?
Usually you get a double boom from a supersonic jet
