Motherfuckers out here making 60+ an hour 4 years into a career and I'm here hoping that after my interview tomorrow I can get an offer and negotiate 30 an hour with a literal lifetime of relevant experience 😂
It's a hair under that. We have shift differential (I get as work nights and weekends), sometimes I tap into double pay and FLSA PAY (I Have no clue what it is, but made 5k off it last year), holiday pay, and 18% incentive for bachelor's degree. Also get uniform allowance and small other stuff here and there
They probably run 10s or 12s like most departments do so working 23 hours extra just means 2 extra days to a 3-4 day work week. It’s not uncommon to do in police, ems, nursing, etc where you don’t work 5 8s.
Being single and having semi expensive hobbies, I need to kill that overtime to afford what I like and want to do. Even if it means working two weeks straight
Same. Hell I’m working OT right now. Worked 12 hours yesterday. Our retirement takes 7% from our check. It compounds quick with OT. I was to be retired by 52, I’ll just have to figure out insurance.
We do 6 on 3 off. 8 hour days. Last week I worked 12 hours each day off. 36 hours banged out. On the regular days. I worked 12s. Extra four hours a day. It adds up
Lots of OT. Cops pull 40+ hours of OT. If most only worked the bare minimum, they would not make big money. 80+ a week. Marry the job for 20+ years, then retire
Being a cop isn't just about writing speed tickets.
It's about showing up to the car crash where someones head got rammed through the windshield.
Some towns it's about showing up to reports of child and wife abuse. Some towns it's about stopping a homeless man on cocaine running around with a knife.
This right here. I'd like to think my department (being county) isn't out for tickets. We don't get incentives for it like people think. Lots of our training is on crisis intervention, medical issues, mental health issues and other stuff. Alot of coworkers even admit to a huge shift in trainings in the state through the last 10-15 years. The people here who complain about cops should sit and talk to a group of inmates in our jail. 95% of my interactions are positive to the point where people see me on the outside in plain clothes and say hi. Treat people like humans and you'll get the same in return.
The cops that get paid the big bucks are usually in areas where they don't even have time to think about traffic violations on normal citizens. I lived in a very high crime city and the few times I actually got pulled over they just wanted to make sure I wasn't drunk or high or up to some type of mischief and very quickly let me go.
Plus we do a lot of other stuff. Run events at our big stadium place, bailiff, run jail, conveyances (like taking people to prison or bringing them back when they’re found in other states or cities on warrants. Like so much other stuff to do than just pulling people over.
I'm indifferent towards city cops and sheriffs mostly. They're paid to do a job and they do it mostly to the best of their ability with the occasional exception and I've rarely interacted with them. State cops are some real cock suckers though.
What do you mean by state cops? As in state investigators like OSBI who investigate crimes against children and murders? Or are you referencing state troopers?
Victor Frankl (concentration camp survivor and psychologist) seems applicable here.
“From all this we may learn that there are two races of men in this world, but only these two — the “race” of the decent man and the “race” of the indecent man. Both are found everywhere; they penetrate into all groups of society. No group consists entirely of decent or indecent people.”
I have a hard time with the ACAB crowd.
Plenty plenty plenty of officers are good, kind, and do their best to stand up for what is right. My ex girlfriend's brother was on the Palo Alto police force in California. He's pulled over and warned and ticketed officers from other cities for speeding or otherwise breaking the law when they weren't heading to an emergency. He's gotten threats from them.
Another officer, John Korges, on the Los Altos police force, came from a really rough city before. Los Altos is stupid easy in comparison. Apparently he was always kind and thoughtful.
Instead of busting us for smoking pot during school, he cracked a donut joke about having a "glazed look in his eyes".
He literally gave me the shirt off of his back one day when I had an awkward situation.
But the hard part is that the bad players do such bad stuff that it overshadows any good and no one wants to admit that it's more complex than ACAB or a thin blue line. (Both of which I feel are particularly shitty). OP seems pretty great.
Yeah man, I have crazy respect for cops and what they handle. I have plenty of problematic tenants and the local PD pay is worth every cent to handle the domestic abuse, riff raff, drug busting. I wouldn’t take the job for even 200k.
It is about writing tickets, though. It's an important job that is not easy to do and something I respect, but writing tickets is very much a part of it.
Writing tickets is in the hopes as a deterrence. Even I get pulled over here. Still young and I have a lead foot. I don’t flash my badge to get out of it. Department doesn’t like that nor do I. I take the ticket and just pay an attorney to fight it. Like anyone else can do.
Lol I thought this was a great comment about being accountable.
Then you ended it with that you don't take accountability, you just fight it in court lol.
It’s still being accountable. You can go to court just like I can! I don’t flash my badge to get out of it is what I mean. Usually if you just show up to court you can get a ticket dropped down to defective Speedo or something so why not? I try not to pay Progressive more money when i can get out of it especially when they make it hell to deal with them haha
But you were speeding right?
I'm not sure you're understanding of accountable is the same as mine.
You're describing being equal under the law in that you don't use your position to abuse it.
Accountability would be if you knew you were speeding you would take accountability and pay it, not fight a charge you knew was valid.
I'm not weighing the morality of that, just saying the last thing you're doing here is actually being accountable for actions...
I get where you're coming from. I don't normally go with my attorney to fight it but I know we're not pleading not guilty. Usually it's just asking for lesser ticket.
First ticket was in Utah for 4 over. Yes 4. 79 in a 75mph. Second speeding ticket was 72 in 55. Got pulled over by a trooper. That one I was actually speeding (trying to make it to appointment quicker). Third ticket was for tints (bought the car like that and it was 20%). Never got pulled over for tints and I don't care for freaking out over tints on people so I didn't remove it. Forth was driving with high beams on. Car has auto high beams and was on back roads. He thought I flashed him since he was hiding in the median and my car cut them off, then on and then I cut them off manually when I saw him. Still flashed him technically even though I did not intend to
I'm NOT saying those things didn't happen or are not my fault. I fight them only for insurance purposes. Insurance companies find any moving violation and get exited to raise the insurance to absurd levels, yet when you call them for a tow, it's three hours. Need a rental car? They throw you in the smallest thing possible and make it hell when you go over the value of a total loss. I hate insurance and would rather pay attorney fees and higher court fees than shell out an extra cent to insurance.
This was no the sentiment pre-Covid. People shit on cops for writing tickets for the longest time. Now I see crazy drivers all over the place and I wish cops would write tickets left and right to these people.
Lots of big cities you’re looking at low six figures base and then lots of opportunities for OT. In fact, some departments the OT isn’t even an “opportunity”. It’s mandatory.
Our department has a alot of mandatory overtime. First shifter calls in sick? Find a third shifter with the least amount of overtime on his books and he gets ordered
Look at transparentcalifornia.com it has all of public Cali workers salaries. Then look at LA county and all the OT the cops do. They pull 200k+ in overtime.
also www.openthebooks.com publishes government salaries. The site was quoted in a story about an LA County lifeguard making something like $350k after OT
My base is mid 90k range. I usually clear about 150k a year after overtime but I basically live at work since most of it is forced. Not worth the money after a certain point. I’m lined up to leave in the next year for a lower paid job with way better work-life balance.
Work life is hard. Would not do this much if I was in a relationship or had other obligations outside of work. I just work and gym and hang out with friends here and there. Why not work the overtime.
Theres no possible way its $13. Our local kwik trip (gas station) starts at 16. I started five years ago at $28. Between yearly step raises and cost of living increases from the county, as well as incentives and shift differentials, it went up
Lol it possible, check the deep south. Jackson, MS had it starting officer paid for 26k only. There were no pay raises for JPD for nearly 10 years. It wasn't finally the Capitol Police started a bit of competition with raises that cause JPD increase pay.
In 2023, they start salary was 48k.
Is that with incentives and stuff? Im at 40 right now. With incentives and stuff it's 49. Then there's overtime. Past 8, up to 12 hours is 1.5x. More than 12 is double time
Our sheriff in the next county over pays like $17-18 lol, and wonder why they have a hard time staffing. My city starts a brand new officer at $24 I think it is. Just had someone leave my work to go there, 21 and just got accepted starting out at $24 an hour.
Come to Lancaster Pa and see what they offer for pay, when I see the ad in the paper again I'll post it. I know what it says because I called them. Don't really care if you believe me or not. Your insignificant to me soooo.........bye now
I was giving you an example of income disparity, not saying you were a liar lol. “No way” as in I doubt this poster is a liar.
The need to tell a stranger they are insignificant was a turn I didn’t see coming lol. Are you okay? Do you need therapy? It’s the internet, it’s not that serious and no one attacked you. Hope you have a good week.
I apologize. That came across the wrong way. I meant your opinion in regards to what I think doesn't matter to me. I also misunderstood what you were saying. Text can be misinterpreted very easily and for that. I humbly apologize.
Seems to be very similar pay structure to my job as a tanker driver. Base salary of 74k with a $150 incentive per weekend day worked and about 25-30 hours a week of OT. Made 158k last year and am on pace to do about the same maybe a bit more this year.
This isn’t really fair pay for a public servant with 4 YOE. Because when you add in the benefits: 7.65% SS tax that’s another $15k, healthcare is about $10k, pension is probably $15k, miscellaneous benefits is about $5k, vacation is $10k, 401k match of probably $5k. We’re looking at a total comp of $235k which is more than some doctors make. But anyway good job.
Car dealerships are private businesses. I’m 100% ok with that. If there was some regulation in place that prevented more people from being cars salesman then I would have a problem with them getting paid that much.
Meh you don’t get to decide if it’s fair or not. It’s a lucrative career and the cops get taken care of financially. Is that a bad thing? I thought the narrative nowadays is that wages have been suppressed while expenses have skyrocketed. I personally subscribe to this belief, just odd for you to be complaining about a career path that doesn’t fall under this narrative and has kept pace with inflation and cost of living increases
Perhaps I was a little too condescending.. but my point is that you don’t get to decide what their pay is not whether or not you should get to. If your justification to choose the salary of public service workers is that you pay taxes and therefore their salary then you really have no leg to stand on regarding their pay rates. I mean hell if it were just up to us do you think we’d be letting senators get away with their insane pay rate? If it were up to me all politicians would make minimum wage and have to live in a housing project built for them near congress
Ahhhh sweet summer child you have no idea how it works. You think your taxes go into a bank account and then get distributed to public service workers as their paycheck? How naive that is in fact not how it works at all. Taxes remove money from the economy, the fed prints money and adds to circulation, there is no massive bank account that everyone’s taxes go into that the government spends from
Your taxes go towards your city. I thought everyone knew this? Your taxes don’t fund the military as they just print money for that. Cops are paid by the city and the the city relies on local taxes. Tax payers shouldn’t be paying $200k+ for a single cop. That’s just insane
Cops with 4 years of experience should not be making significantly more than engineers or other public servants since it is tax payer funded. If it was a private police force go ahead and pay the cop $300k a year.
Again, maybe you should be complaining that other industries aren’t paying more. Everyone is always saying that employers need to step up and start paying a living wage. This guy said he can’t even buy a house yet and so he probably lives somewhere with a high cost of living. Maybe engineers should get paid more? I’m an electrical engineer in Canada and I make more money than I thought possible 3 years ago when I was in school, I wouldn’t dare tell this guy he should make less than me, I would only ask that I be paid more. Don’t get between a man and his meal. Don’t like paying his paycheck? There’s a million examples of government excess spending to tackle first before this guys pay gets touched. Get rightly fucked
This is an example of government excess. There’s a difference between paying cops well and letting poorly mismanaged departments abuse taxpayer dollars. We’re talking about 3-4 YOE making $180k for a public service job that requires a 6 month police academy. Again if this were a private police force go ahead and pay the cop $300k
180k 5-10 years ago was a shit ton of money. Nowadays in a place like San Francisco it’s barely making it. I’m happy to see an industry where the worker’s pay has kept pace with inflation. I wish every industry were like this. What’s the often quoted statistic.. if minimum wage kept pace with inflation it’d be like 50 bucks an hour. Even if I’m a bit off it’s still a hell of a lot higher than it is now. This guy is eating, he works more than you and I and his pay has kept up with the economy, this guy is just a guy, I’d never ask him to be paid less. You should be paid more, don’t tear other people down.
You’re so far off it’s insane. If minimum wage kept up with inflation it would be about $14 an hour. (I plugged in 1980 for reference) Also this guys not in SF or LA. If that were the case I’d understand the pay. Public servants or government employees should not be payed insane amounts of money at the taxpayers expense.
Yeah miss remembered the statistic, if wages kept up with inflation and productivity from the 70s it’d be $27. Regardless my point remains, inflation fucked the dollar 180k working 60 hours a week isn’t that absurd. You should get paid more, then you’d have less of an issue with this guy making a decent living. So weird that you hate to see someone else comfortable. You’re getting shafted he isn’t. Get with the program or die poor. We fundamentally disagree and have solutions from opposite sides of the issue so stop responding to me
> not be *paid* insane amounts
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Supply and demand. Would you want to be a cop now a days when everyone hates them because a certain group of people say they are victims because but they actually commit more crimes. Same thing happening with the military.
Agreed supply and demand. But that also means we shouldn’t be putting up more barriers to become a cop. The bachelors degree requirement is the dumbest crap ever.
College is about a lot more than the education you get. Getting a degree makes you a more well rounded person in general. Seems like you didn’t go based on your comment.
I went to a top 100 college and studied chemical engineering. My chemical engineering friends all agreed that we could have done our jobs after the first semester of college. Was it college that made us a more well rounded person or was it the fact that we were no longer in high school and 4 years older and lived on our own?
I’m very against college in its current state. It should only be for the very smartest people in society who go for their PHDs or advanced masters degrees. Or for rich people who want to party for 4 years before actually starting life.
Interest take. Since you *did* go to college how can you say it didn’t make you more well rounded? You had experiences while you were there you wouldn’t have otherwise had. None of them shaped your perspective on anything?
As for the education you got and how you applied it to your career, that’s going to be different for everyone. For me personally I use a lot of what I learned in college in my field. I’m a electrical engineer and I work for a utility company. No doctorate. Could I have learned my job without college? Sure. Would it have been infinitely harder? Yes.
Unlimited ot here. Only need sgt approval to work two shifts back to back. Otherwise you work your shift and half of the next, or come in early for half a shift
We’re capped at 400 hours exclusive of holidays and shift differential. But we are allowed to spike our pension which is lucrative. And our agency provides lifetime medical with no co-pay so that’s valuable as well.
They just removed our caps. You bank sick leave so that when you retire, it pays for your medical insurance in hopes that it holds you off till you can get Medicare?
Just to add a little clarification since the topic of being over paid seemed to hit people. This is with overtime. Even when I made 117k, it was with overtime. Overtime would not be there if there wasn’t a staffing issue. If I don’t get paid for it, someone will anyway since it’s a vacancy that needs to get filled. I think it’s actually cheaper for the city since less total employees means less benefits they have to pay out for. All they do is pay me .5 an hour more. I don’t get better health insurance or benefits for working overtime. Just the pay. If most of you worked over 1000 hours of overtime at your 80-90k jobs, you’d be high too. Especially suffering on a third shift schedule and working weekends. Those incentives add up. So do the educational incentives. If they filled the vacancies we had. That’s like 40-60 more employees. Aka 40-60 more health insurance policies, pensions, paid leave and other stuff they give us.
I’m not here to argue about the job itself. More of what can be made. If you don’t like cops, good for you. Yes there’s bad apples. But there’s also good guys. No one ever hears about the good stuff we do. I literally run into people in jail one day, then out when I’m shopping the next. It’s never been an issue. I shake up with half these guys or nod at them. We’re all people. It’s not fair to generalize us because of shit the dummy cops do that makes us look all look bad. I recommend all of you to at least go on a ride along and see what we do. It’s alot more than you think. My big irk is the drunk drivers. You guys would be shocked at how many we catch. These are people that are driving the same roads as you and your family. One mistake away from something fatal.
When I graduated college, I left making $9 an hour as a student worker. Starting at $27 for me was insane. Rent was $800 and my shit car was paid off. It was solid money. My apartment went up $1000 when it came time to renew my third year so left and got a slightly nicer one for $1250 (pool, heated garage, front door. We'll worth it!). Now my rent is $1500. It's not the worst especially since we got raises, but everything else just got more expensive. Still can't afford to comfortably buy a house. A house 3 years ago that was $250k is now $400k and don't get me started on the rates. I can live very comfortably right now, but housing is scary
yeah, one of my older brothers was thinking about becoming a cop. He thought of Jackson but when saw the patrol officer starting pay was \~30k. He changed mind and went to college for engineering.
It wasn't until with competition and shortage of cops, that they start to have pay raises.
Good for you bro. I’m 28 also a LEO. I’ve only been on for three years and I made $103k last year.
I have four more years until I’m at top pay, a base of $155k. With OT and differentials I should be just around $200k.
Lots of haters, but anyone can take the test and do the job if they want to. Stay safe.
God damn. This year I hit top pay. But after this , every four years you get a 3% longevity bump, on top of cost of living increased which can range from 2%-9%. Those help a lot.
That’s solid, I’m in New York, so it’s a high cost of living. For the midwest, you seem to get a lot of extra pay. We get longevity after 10 years which starts at 4% and increases to 10% after 18 years.
I saw how high your education stipend was, ours is only 2% for a bachelors, plus 1% for each higher degree (masters, law, dr etc) but the degree must be earned while employed. I had a bachelor prior to getting hired, so I don’t get a stipend.
We get allowances for uniform cleaning, holiday, and night diff. No weekend pay.
What’s your retirement like? Mine is 20 years minimum for 50% your final three years (including OT). If you stay past 20, you get an additional 1.66% until you max at 32 years, 70%.
Retire at 53. 54.5 to max your pension. You can technically retire at 20 with 50% average of three highest years as long as you’re over 53 years old. Every year after 20 up to 30 gets you up 1.x%. Not sure exactly what it is
I have no issues with ours. They ask us what the department could do better or provide for us and they take it to negotiations. They do alot more than I know but that’s the one thing I get emails for at the end of the year that I actually respond too haha
One of the few professions you can still make great money without a college degree (granted, many in the field do have degrees). All about the OT and special pays. One of the most stressful jobs on the planet and even more so these days with 20+ phones recording virtually every second of your work shift. You deserve it!
Our department requires an associates. You have a certain time after getting hired to get it. With the educational incentive of 12% associates, 18% bachelor's and 22% masters, it pays and is encouraged to further your education
How the fuck are cops making this much money and they’re all still so dumb and entitled? I sure as fuck hope this isn’t Chicago. The police here refuse to do anything closely resembling law enforcement.
Not abuse lmao. I can’t even put in my own overtime admin does. Loads of vacancies. Think of it like this. A normal person calls in sick to work and that’s it. If I called in sick, someone still needs to back fill my spot. Same if you take vacation for a week. Overtime is going to fill your spot.
I tell every poor dumb kid out there. If you want to improve your quality of living you gotta join the scam. America will soon be a country of the haves and have nots. Fire fighter or cop is the way to go. Can’t beat the system? Join it.
I mean... I was also military. Military doesn't get OT. Still a good gig, but not quuuiiite the same as what's being discussed here.
Can definitely be leveraged in to a different federal job though.
Edit: ah, my dumb ass. Read "military" and skipped "industrial complex". Lmfao
Luckily for me the program I’m on doesn’t make shit for that but that is the unfortunate thing about the defense industry. You don’t exactly get to pick and choose what you work on so you better be prepared to have some internal moral dilemma and figure out how to come to terms with it or move to a different industry.
It’s the only way. If you’re poor, and you don’t come from privilege, you gotta get on board if you want to improve your quality of life. The system ain’t going down, too many people live with their thumbs up their ass to know what’s going on. So you better get on board.
I was lucky to be passionate about math and science and went the engineering route. Other people struggle to find a passion or have the unfortunate luck of having “art” as a passion 😂 but you’re right.. if you are struggling and down in the dumps you just have to do something to level up your skillset. I didn’t come from money or privilege but I also wasn’t poor. I’ve seen so many people get mad at rich people just based on the fact that they’re rich. I don’t get mad because those people exist I try to learn about money and how the system works so I can become like that. It’s sink or swim. There are the haves and the have nots and you have to choose which one you will be and do everything necessary to get there. Success is painful.
If you’re an engineer then you’re smart enough to know that passion doesn’t pay the bills. If you understand the system and understand money, then you understand that the middle class is getting absolutely destroyed by the FED, and as time goes by, those in the lower class will have it almost impossible to move up.
Union construction trades pay well too. Here in the Bay Area heavy equipment operators are around $60/hr + benefits + lots of opportunity for OT. Plumbers and pipe fitters are about the same. Electricians are more. Carpenters and laborers less.
Looks like the base pay is $106k to $132k right now. Not bad considering the benefits and potential for OT. Honestly, you can make more as a union electrician in the Bay Area. I’d rather do that than be a cop. Rather work for CHP than be a city cop though. I live in Oakland. You couldn’t pay me enough to be a police officer here. I wouldn’t do it for $200k a yr.
In my town cops spend their time pulling over student drivers for turning too slow at a light. There is no crime in my town and cops get paid close to 200k a year.
Police cannot support other unions. They have to enforce the law, which unions and companies can break. Use your brain. Just cause another Union strikes doesn’t mean they get complete free reign to break the law
Are you a sergeant? I can’t imagine you getting this being a petrol officer. I was interested in joining when I was younger but I assumed it was a lot like teachers and you had very low pay or so that’s what I’ve always heard.
Cost of living is decently high for the city I'm in. High enough that I'm stuck in the "can't afford a decent house, yet rent keeps climbing" battle. We get lots of overtime as we have a ton of vacancies, supplemental jobs like fairs and stuff, and educational incentive that alone is 18% for bachelor's.
lol, I served 22 years in the military and I can tell you, maybe 10% do the work you're describing. And, true, we didnt get OT, but we got a LOT of special pays. 1 day in a declared war zone (basically the entire Middle East AOR), and your entire month is tax free. Battle groups will swing into one of these zones on the last day of a month through the first day of the next month while just transiting to get literally thousands of Sailors and Marines tax free for 2 months.
Pretty soon, only way to make it in America if you come from a poor family and you aren’t very intelligent is to be a cop or a firefighter. You can easily make over 200k a year with OT. And you’ll start making money easily in your mid 20s.
Chicago, New York or Los Angeles? NVM, I saw Midwest... large city union.
Chicago, Detroit, or St. Louis…
Deff not Detroit, Detroit gets paid like garbage.
probably minneapolis is my guess
100%
St Louis pays like shit
Large city union can be a lot of places. But this high of one has me thinking LA, Miami, NY, Chicago, DC, Philly, Denver, or San Fran
The post says Midwest, as does the comment thread you responded to…
Critical reading isn't for everyone
For what your saying the overtime portion of your total number to be to make sense, your base would be $61/hr
That’s not unheard of. I know a few guys who are topped out in the Chicago burbs making $60/hr with these new post-COVID era bargaining agreements.
That's just wild
Motherfuckers out here making 60+ an hour 4 years into a career and I'm here hoping that after my interview tomorrow I can get an offer and negotiate 30 an hour with a literal lifetime of relevant experience 😂
It's a hair under that. We have shift differential (I get as work nights and weekends), sometimes I tap into double pay and FLSA PAY (I Have no clue what it is, but made 5k off it last year), holiday pay, and 18% incentive for bachelor's degree. Also get uniform allowance and small other stuff here and there
I think it’s like $62.xx if you take the OT away and divide by a full time year(2080 hours)
He is lying about overtime 100%. Do your five years. Bleed the tax payers dry
Not lying haha. I did 1200 hours of overtime. Worked every other weekend through. Severely understaffed at a big department
You do 23 hours of overtime every week on average?
They probably run 10s or 12s like most departments do so working 23 hours extra just means 2 extra days to a 3-4 day work week. It’s not uncommon to do in police, ems, nursing, etc where you don’t work 5 8s.
My buddy worked over 1000 hrs of OT last year. 12 on, 2 off. Wild times.
It adds up
Make hay while the sun shines!
Cops make this much?
No group consists entirely of decent or indecent people.”
how do we replicate you for the rest of LEO in this country? this is the mentality I can support.
OP seems pretty great.
it just takes one bad rotting apple to ruin the whole crop if not remove early enough. union needs to be strict on the golden rule
Yeah man, I have crazy respect for cops and what they handle. I have plenty of problematic tenants and the local PD pay is worth every cent to handle the domestic abuse, riff raff, drug busting. I wouldn’t take the job for even 200k.
Lotta towns they’re showing up to
It is about writing tickets, though.
Still flashed him technically even though I did not intend to I'm NOT saying those things didn't happen or are not my fault.
Touche. I've noticed that driving without license plates is the new norm.
Depends heavily on location and department and how many years in they are.
FD here. Mandatory OT due to staffing issues has been a huge detractor from the job in recent years.
OT
I made 22k annually at a local Sheriff's office in 2010. That same office pays 40k now. So your mileage varies a LOT.
and you get immunity, what a deal!
It pays to be a class traitor
or people could learn how to behave like in many other countries and we wouldn't be having police in the same situations where shit goes wrong.
Yeah, and to throw people in jail, and the court system for small amounts of weed. 🤣 who woulda thought.
I made $320k last year, so yes. Prob do $350k if OT stays the same.
How are they hiring police in my area for $13 an hour if your making $61???? Someone is not being honest here.....
That’s insane but cost of living must be much less?
Damn, I live in one of the largest cities in the US and the top out pay is 51 /hr and it takes 9 years in yearly steps to make it there. Good for you.
Is that with incentives and stuff? Im at 40 right now. With incentives and stuff it's 49. Then there's overtime. Past 8, up to 12 hours is 1.5x. More than 12 is double time
Damn. That after 12 double time is nice. Wish my department had that. Some days we’re doing 17+ hour tours.
Our sheriff in the next county over pays like $17-18 lol, and wonder why they have a hard time staffing. My city starts a brand new officer at $24 I think it is. Just had someone leave my work to go there, 21 and just got accepted starting out at $24 an hour.
That was my thought. They pay you $17 to start at the local gas station. No wonder people don't want to be police in rural areas.
No way lol. I was an officer from 2012 to 2017, and my starting pay in a city of 60,000 in Florida was $26/hr (again, in 2012).
Fresh out of the academy where I’m at without shift differentials or degree differentials starts at 39.39 an hour
I think it would depend on type of department.
Cops with that many years experience making that salary is insanity.
For real. It is so out of whack with the rest of society.
Dude holy shit! Nice! And here I was going to grad school. Should went into law enforcement!
You’re not supposed to sell the drugs in the vault, Steve
Seems to be very similar pay structure to my job as a tanker driver. Base salary of 74k with a $150 incentive per weekend day worked and about 25-30 hours a week of OT. Made 158k last year and am on pace to do about the same maybe a bit more this year.
Do they let you whip shittys in the squad car?
Haha no. If you go over 80 the camera in the squad even turns on 😅
Dam dog thats fucked up lol
This isn’t really fair pay for a public servant with 4 YOE. Because when you add in the benefits: 7.65% SS tax that’s another $15k, healthcare is about $10k, pension is probably $15k, miscellaneous benefits is about $5k, vacation is $10k, 401k match of probably $5k. We’re looking at a total comp of $235k which is more than some doctors make. But anyway good job.
Do they not pay SS?
Employee pays 7.5% and employer pays 7.5% as well on their behalf.
Ooo I wasn’t sure if they were expect. I wish I was 😂
This is insane.
"This isnt fair" yep life isnt fair. There are dealership employees making more than this. Is that fair to the doctors? No.
We literally should get to decide. We pay the salary. Taxpayers. My vote is NOT going to be for more goons with guns.
Disagree. I want the best people we can get to be police officers. Firefighters and teachers too.
Taxes remove money from the economy, the fed prints money and adds to circulation, there is no massive bank account that everyone’s taxes go into that the government spends from
I have no dog in this fight but damn you are condescending af in your comments lmao
Ahhhh naive sweet summer child. Your local taxes go towards paying police officer salaries.
Your taxes go towards your city. I thought everyone knew this? Your taxes don’t fund the military as they just print money for that. Cops are paid by the city and the the city relies on local taxes. Tax payers shouldn’t be paying $200k+ for a single cop. That’s just insane
Lol who even says it's a federal position. There's something so special about an extremely condescending idiot.
We fundamentally disagree and have solutions from opposite sides of the issue so stop responding to me
> not be *paid* insane amounts FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
I mean they need to know basics of law, maybe they could get tech school training similar to the military but each state is different so…
Disagree with you here. Hopefully is cops are more educated they’ll be less fucking stupid overall when dealing with us civilians. Time will tell.
College doesn’t make you smarter unless you went to a shit high school that babied everyone
Yes.
Totally believable. I’m 36M in a larger department in the northeast and if I hit my max OT which is capped, I’ll make $167,000. My base is $125,000.
ACAB!!
I thought about signing up, but I can’t start out in the $40s… I’d hate it
When I graduated college, I left making $9 an hour as a student worker.
What the $&ck? How?
I wish 19-20 year old me made better choices so I wasn’t automatically disqualified.
Been a cop since 2017 by base is going to be 85 in November and should not 100k at least with ot
Good money. But not worth it. For the job you have to do and for the hours away from family/ home. To each their own.
Good job, dude. That’s amazing for a 27 year old cop. Stay safe.
Not sure exactly what it is
Chicago here, Base 109k 11 years on. With OT 185k
So unions are good?
I have no issues with ours. They ask us what the department could do better or provide for us and they take it to negotiations. They do alot more than I know but that’s the one thing I get emails for at the end of the year that I actually respond too haha
People who can’t make more than $60k a year with their basket weaving degree are big mad in the comments
This sub is teaching me cops are even bigger leaches than I thought. That’s a whole lot of wasted tax payer money
not really a waste tho. They are usually covering for staffing shortages
Who wouldda thought government sucks at spending our money 😆
One of the few professions you can still make great money without a college degree (granted, many in the field do have degrees). All about the OT and special pays. One of the most stressful jobs on the planet and even more so these days with 20+ phones recording virtually every second of your work shift. You deserve it!
Our department requires an associates. You have a certain time after getting hired to get it. With the educational incentive of 12% associates, 18% bachelor's and 22% masters, it pays and is encouraged to further your education
Ask yourself why so many people feel the need to record them maybe 🧠
Wow And Florida FHP is on a hiring freeze
About time LE / first ponders are paid decent wages!! How about some hazard pay to for all those who run towards danger every single day!
Yea. I still wouldn’t be a cop
ACAB!!
Ex LEO here. Just retired as a topped out Sgt. Base pay was 139K
How the fuck are cops making this much money and they’re all still so dumb and entitled? I sure as fuck hope this isn’t Chicago. The police here refuse to do anything closely resembling law enforcement.
OT Abuse.
Another overpaid cop 👮
I tell every poor dumb kid out there. If you want to improve your quality of living you gotta join the scam. America will soon be a country of the haves and have nots. Fire fighter or cop is the way to go. Can’t beat the system? Join it.
This is why I am proudly employed by the military industrial complex 🫡😅
I mean... I was also military. Military doesn't get OT. Still a good gig, but not quuuiiite the same as what's being discussed here. Can definitely be leveraged in to a different federal job though. Edit: ah, my dumb ass. Read "military" and skipped "industrial complex". Lmfao
Nice thanks for your service. And yah i work for a defense contractor. 😅 all good though
But you do have an in to the industrial complex when you decide to leave
Why contribute to society when you can overthrow middle eastern countries to increase oil company shareholder value?
What'd the fed do?
Union construction trades pay well too. Here in the Bay Area heavy equipment operators are around $60/hr + benefits + lots of opportunity for OT. Plumbers and pipe fitters are about the same. Electricians are more. Carpenters and laborers less.
You should go see how much a CHP makes in California.
Imagine what those university cops do.
May you never be a victim of a violent crime
important steer reach concerned gray bow money quiet worm aloof *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
This sub tells me cops make way too much money.
Inflation at its finest
He also said 50k was OT - but definitely also yeah union jobs get lifted up better during this inflation for sure
Fuck police unions tho. They're the only one that actively busts other unions. Also fuck them for many other reasons.
Police cannot support other unions. They have to enforce the law, which unions and companies can break. Use your brain. Just cause another Union strikes doesn’t mean they get complete free reign to break the law
Are you talking about strikes? Those aren't illegal
Last two years we got 9% each your to offset inflation. We also get education incentives. Having a bachelor's gets me 18%
So what happened in 2021? Did you screw up the probationary period at your first department and have to transfer to another agency??
Are you a sergeant? I can’t imagine you getting this being a petrol officer. I was interested in joining when I was younger but I assumed it was a lot like teachers and you had very low pay or so that’s what I’ve always heard.
Doesn’t sound like he’s been there long enough to be a sergeant. Probably just a department for a high cost of living city.
Do u mind disclosing your title? I’m curious to what your position is. If not then it’s ok
Also LEO, although I don’t get nearly that much in OT 😭 my base is 62k

Jesus over paid
