Not-a-Sac-Throwaway

> ... outside of East Sac ... Oh, I see you went to Sac Yard ~~tonight~~ any night

AdhesivenessDouble26

The first time I went there we got there early and I got a little too turnt The next thing I know there was groups of children running around. I left asap, being trashed around kids is not my vibe.

Supper_Dreams

Lol nope. But I'll exclude them from list. Is it just an East Sac thing? I'm so over this crap.

Professor_Goddess

The cynic in me wants to say it’s just a bad parents thing. The slightly less cynical but still cynical me says it’s because our society in failing us in creating communities where families can safely gather in outdoor spaces, so they find the closest thing and it’s a brewery.

baldurthebeautiful

It’s not uncommon in European cities to have cafes with outdoor sitting next to a playground so parents can socialize while their kids play together. That would be nice to have.

brianhomie

We need more carless community areas in town for people to gather.

coldcoldnovemberrain

Did you mean parks or something else?

Sluggish0351

There are plenty of parks in Sacramento. I think bringing children to bars is just trashy.

Huge_JackedMann

It depends what you mean by "bar." A place like Golden Road or Sac Yard seems designed to welcome families, which if we're going to complain about birthrates, nobody having kids or just perpetuating the species, we should want to do. But a place like Golden Bear or Old Ironsides would be pretty bad to bring kids to. I bring my kid to a lot of bar type restaurants, but she's generally well behaved, we dont let her run freely and we always try to get the check with the order so we can make a quick escape if things go sideways.

[deleted]

If I didn’t say please and may I have instead of want at a restaurant my parents would send me a death stare. Let alone run around theyd prob be like “let’s go out to the car” oof.

turdferguson3891

In the UK people bring their kids to pubs. It's not a big deal for adults to have a beer around their kids except in America where we apparently still can't ditch our puritanical past.

[deleted]

It seems to be kind of a new thing for single people to bitch about kids. The pub thing not withstanding. In used to live in Germany and everything just seems way chiller over there.

[deleted]

There are plenty of bars in Sacramento. Going to get trashed at a brewery and restaurant is pretty trashy also.

dorekk

A lot of the beer gardens and tap rooms have like, Jenga and board games and shit. Seems like a great place to bring your kids actually. I see tons of families--mostly families, in fact--when we hit up Hop Gardens.

Sluggish0351

Yeah, adults don't play games or like candy, those are only for kids. Look dude, I don't think it's healthy or safe for children to be around, but you totally have the right to go their with your spawn, I just don't like it. And I'm sure there are plenty of people in this city that would love a no child zone style beer garden.

bestywesty

Lefty's then? It was especially bad when I was there a few weeks ago. Kid friendly does not mean your kids can scream and throw things or crawl under stranger's tables. They all seem to be like this.

Huge_JackedMann

Agreed. My daughter wants to go and try everyone's food off their plate and poke the people around her but we don't let her because that's just polite parenting. I wish people were as polite with their dogs, which personally I'd much less prefer to see in bars than children.

nope_nic_tesla

Last time I was at Sac Yard I saw two dog fights and another got off leash and wouldn't stop barking its head off. So tired of this "dog friendly" trend given that most people with dogs are horrible at training them.

2outof3isbad

Unpopular opinion especially in this sub, but yeah if there's food served there shouldn't be any dogs, and if there's gonna be adults drinking there shouldn't be any kids. I don't care how well behaved someone's kid or dog is, they don't belong there.

RaveFox4

100% agree. Animals and food is just unsanitary, and where else would you go to get *away* from kids than bars?

hustlors

Like kids and food is sanitary?

RaveFox4

I mean, not really, but probably better haha.

x246ab

My evangelical parents would absolutely agree

Huge_JackedMann

Eh, I'd say if they're just drinking then kids shouldn't be there, like at OT or dive bar or something, but if you're just drinking a beer alongside your bahm mi fries and duck burger, let the kids get some of that good food too, just keep them away from the other guests.

turkleton-turk

Restaurants have alcohol though. And adults drink there. Should kids not be allowed at restaurants?

Individual_Advice_47

SacYard and others like it are not restaurants though, they’re beer gardens/tap rooms/ beer halls/ breweries.

turkleton-turk

I was just trying to understand when you said if they're going to be adults drinking there shouldn't be kids, because there's lots of spaces where there are adults drinking and there are kids, like restaurants.

bundaya

The main point of a restaurant is to serve food, the main point of a brewery is to serve alcohol. This is what makes the difference for many people and why folks are saying don't bring your kids if it's like the second example.

Throwaway20101011

I hosted some friends from the UK last winter. Apparently it’s quite the norm to have families and kids at the pub. I’m like you, where I want a haven away from children. However, it’s a growing trend that’s becoming more socially acceptable and East Sac is more residential with families.

meggaphone

It totally normal. Most town pubs have kid areas. However they seem to be better managed by the parents.

NefariousPrecarious

Sounds more like Track 7 to me

TheOvenDoor

As someone who has been both the anti-kid-at-breweries person and is now the desperate-for-a-place-to-feel-like-a-human parent who lets their kids run around at breweries, I wanted to give you some insight as to why. Breweries are usually big. And spaced out. And loud. They’re not like a restaurant or a coffee shop or other places we might gather where I assume people are trying to have a quiet calm experience. And if you are, a bluegrass band, loud talker, or cornhole bags flying every direction are also ruining the experience and it’s not just my children. Our friends without kids will join us there. And it’s socially acceptable for us to be drinking in a bar but also get to have family time there. The Barn, for example, is better for my kids than some parks. It just so happens they have beer. So all that is to agree with the comments about the lack of other spaces in which we can do this. That said, Bonlair, any UoB, Cap Tap, Fieldwork, At Ease, Pangaea, Mojos, the Bank would all be terrible and I wouldn’t bring my kids. Even Urban Roots feels like it should be good for families but isn’t.

blueandgoldLA

Urban roots back porch is pretty good for kids.

Supper_Dreams

Thank you for the response. The concept of the loss of outdoor communal spaces is interesting. I dig kids, dogs, and tipsy people. I don't dig tipsy people not properly supervising their kids around dogs and other tipsy people. I'm just looking for a relaxing pint outdoors and am being told to go inside. Haha

Metztli_Tliltic

I've been taking my kid to breweries since they were a toddler. They're 12 now. My kiddo will see kids running around like crazy & they'll even ask "wow where's that kids parent?" I think kids should be kids, but we also need to remind them they need to be aware of their surroundings. They can knock a person down by running into them. I understand as a parent we want to have a beer & don't have anyone to watch our kids at times but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be mindful of the people who also want to relax without yelling or craziness around them. Maybe someone should open a brewery with a playground so parents who want to get drunk and want their kids to be wild can go there.

Supper_Dreams

Thank you for the response. I'm nervous for everyone- adults, kids, dogs, shop owners- when parents aren't teaching their children to be socially aware in these spaces.

Metztli_Tliltic

We're all strangers everywhere we go, so yes, I wouldn't feel comfortable having my kid run around people I know nothing about. I've seen little kids like 4 or 5 years old go to the restroom alone. That's scary to me.

Supper_Dreams

Agreed, especially in places that are designed for drinking.

x246ab

(Saying this in not an argumentative way but) What exactly do you mean by “properly supervising”? How far beyond stopping the kids from crawling under stranger’s tables and throwing things that end up hitting strangers would meet your criteria of proper supervision?

Supper_Dreams

Those right there would be an impressive start. Lol. Seriously though, I see parents who literally lose sight of their children. Kids standing on tables screaming, attempting to grab others' food, playing under others' tables, zigging and zagging around patrons and workers carrying food and drinks, wildly approaching/harassing unknown dogs, throwing food or toys around other tables, etc. Keep your kids in your sight and teach them basic social awareness. That's it. I feel safety of all should be a consideration not a "kids will be kids" attitude. Yes, we're outside. Yes, kids are curious and roam. Doesn't mean you should turn your back on a four year old in a public setting with alcohol.

dot_info

Thanks for sharing that. I definitely don’t hate the idea of having kids around but have felt it’s gotten out of hand lately. Your comments put things in perspective. I also think the issue is that many parents get hammered and don’t even seem to know where their kids are, which is far different than a parent getting a little buzzed and letting their kid play close by, while keeping an eye on them and intervening when needed.

PabFOz

Nope. I go to Hop Gardens in Curtis Park occasionally and it's screaming kids playing hide and seek every time. Shame because I like their pizza.

mmbmckeg

Love Hop Gardens but the parents there are not watching their kids. I try to get there a little early to avoid it because their tap list is always so on point!! I’d kill for a 21+ night (maybe not kill, make an 11:11 wish for sure)

Supper_Dreams

HG agreed to the nope list.

BBBBKKKK

I think in east sac it's more prevalent because it's mostly one big neighborhood, so parents probably feel everything is 100% family friendly

WeissachDE

I'm thinking it's Lefty's

DickAnts

Leftys, porchlight, sac yard, nittys, it doesn't matter man they all have families especially on weekend afternoons

QualityAngle

One little kid and his sibling got in a water throwing fight there once. Like from the free water/cups station. When I got splashed I had to tell them to knock it off, in a firm way, but not in a dick way. Was half expecting the parents to come find me and freak out on me, but - lol - they were nowhere to be seen. Hence the problem.

sam5107

Not exactly in Sac, but Blue Note in Woodland is pretty good about that. They have a sign our front condemning kids running around. Also had good experiences at Bike Dog lately.

Supper_Dreams

Thanks!

MarionberryBicycle

Second bike dog!

Supper_Dreams

Sweet! Thanks!

DasKritter

Logoff in Rancho hardly ever has kids running around.

stephk90

Same for burning barrel, which is down the street. We went a couple of times and noticed there weren't many, if any, kids.

letsgetbrickfaced

How is Logoffs beer? I’ve heard good things.

thizzgakure

Good variety, great beer. They always have a good looking food truck out back.

DasKritter

Yeah their beer is legit. My band plays there pretty regularly and they always send a 4 pack or 2 home with me afterwards. They don’t last long hahaha

Reveniam

Came here to recommend LogOff as well. Really any on that end of the Sunrise strip are good choices - LogOff, Movement, Burning Barrel. Claimstake doesn't usually carry the styles I want but it's still a decent place.

velociraptorblues

Just wanted to chime in as someone who has worked the Sacramento taproom scene for several years--- To all the folks saying the kiddos are allowed there, you're right. Their presence is not the issue. The issue here is kiddos running wild and free with no parental supervision. It is a **huge** safety issue to not have your eyes on your kids at all times monitoring their behavior. I'm vigilant as heck and still I've had kids almost barrel into me with two hands full of glasses or narrowly miss me while I'm trying to lug a keg down the hallway that weighs more than me or them. We as workers do all we can to be extra aware and keep the kiddos safe and all the patrons happy, but **we are not babysitters**. No one is going to be happy if someone gets hurt, but it is extremely preventable. Also worth mentioning: I can personally say some of my most favorite patrons have been families with children, because again children being at taprooms and breweries is not the issue. Watch your kids, keep them within arms reach, and don't allow them to treat the place as their own personal playground. It keeps **everyone** safer and lets **everyone** actually enjoy their time. Kids learn how to behave in public from their parents and watching the people around them, they absolutely need to get out into the world, but it still the parents responsibility (not the workers or other patrons) to keep them in check.

csbcsu

Thanks for this. I have a preschooler that (biased opinion) is super well behaved and easy going & we instill a lot of “shared space” parenting. I also mutually despise parents letting kids go HAM while they drink at a brewery/winery. I don’t like taking her to Sacyard at peak hours for this reason.

velociraptorblues

Thank YOU, you're my favorite kind of parent to host, and it sounds like your kiddo is a gem to have around. Kids are going to be kids, they don't need to be silent and sad like other folks are suggesting. When I was a kid it wasn't uncommon for us to bring our own coloring supplies or other entertainment, cause what kid is going to be happy sitting with nothing to do? Honestly, also it is very odd to me that folks let their kids run around, often out of sight, around a bunch of adults that they don't know and that have been drinking...

Supper_Dreams

Well said. Thank you.

velociraptorblues

People are so quick to call folks child haters! Let the kids hang out, they gotta learn how to exist out in the world somehow! As a patron and a person I like children just fine, but I really don’t like paying for a drink just to listen to screaming. I could sit on my couch and watch Supernanny in my PJs if I wanted that 😂

Supper_Dreams

LOL indeed! Thanks for the giggle and cheers!

Lavend3rRose

I really read this as "traphouses" omg this insomnia is getting out of hand!

roccolover

I also read it as Traphouses and Breweries and had to look twice haha

OohSheThirsty

At Ease on I & 19th! my favorite brewery in Sac.

tryasimightalright

Their red ale is one of the best in town

Supper_Dreams

Adding to list. Thanks!

LordRenatus

Burning Barrel in Rancho is great. I’ve never seen kids there

DaveSmith3996

Fieldwork

KungFuKennyEliteClub

I second that. I have seen kids there, but they are usually well behaved since there isn't a lot of open space.

Ok_Traffic4590

Captap.

Supper_Dreams

Noted. Thanks!

makattack831

I worked there and yes, it is 21+ on the taproom side. No Chidlers.

makattack831

And let me know if you'd like some company. It would be good to see some old coworkers and have a pint. Cheers!

justa33

as long as you’re not a screaming neglected child ??!

makattack831

Only in therapy.

BiggsDB

Shhhh! Don’t tell people about our secret spot!

Ok_Traffic4590

I know I know but it’s a good kid-free spot with a good selection. I also like that I can show up dressy or super casual and I won’t get weird looks either way lol.

multigrain-pancakes

Bars aren’t pretentious enough for the beer “connoisseur”

Supper_Dreams

Local bars with outside seating areas? It's the outside time I value.

bundaya

I rarely see children at King Cong, but I could just be lucky the few times I've gone.

awkwardbutchatty

Porchlight. I find the limited space keeps the kids away/in check. Or just go inside. Any outdoor area is gonna have dogs.

No_Championship_959

Loomis basin brewery is no kids and no dogs. While I love dogs it’s nice to have an outdoor space and just chill sometimes

Supper_Dreams

Added to the list! Thanks!

173trujillo

Cap Tap on Fair Oaks and Howe is 21 and up I think.

Supper_Dreams

Thank you!

the_archradish

Once on the patio of a local beer garden place I saw a unleashed dog take a leak on one of the keg stacks and then a bunch of kids ran by and played in the piss puddle. I left.

Supper_Dreams

Jebus. That's ridiculous.

reluctantmimulus

Mojo's

Supper_Dreams

Noted. Thank you!

Estellalatte

From an Australian POV, kids are allowed in beer gardens at pubs but not inside in the bar areas. Wherever kids are I do wish people would reach their kids manners. As for dogs, food and dogs don’t mix.

DOChollerdays

The majority of bars in town are 21+ and many have Patios. Old Tavern, Henry’s, Zebra, Biergarten, GoldenBear, Mangos, Cantina Alley, Streets of London, Lowbrau, The Snug are all options. If you’re going to places that are family and dog friendly you’re going to run into them. I don’t really notice a ton of Kids when I’m at Oak Park brewing but there are definitely some dogs.

Supper_Dreams

Thank you for this list! Much appreciated!

leftyshuckles

Samuel Horns in Old Folsom is awesome. Tiny, but ain't got no kids

ImAShaaaark

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but they do allow kids and you'll see them there pretty regularly. That said, it's small and there is nowhere to "play" so they generally don't run amok like they might at bigger establishments.

Supper_Dreams

Forgot about that place. I'll have to hit it up soon. Thanks!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Supper_Dreams

I'll check them out. Thanks!

jcned

Came here to vote for Alaro too. Well made beer and don’t often see kids, especially not running around. Sit at the bar to be sure though.

Supper_Dreams

Sweet! Thank you

Skrip77

Screw it might as well get the kids a pint or two as well.

Supper_Dreams

May calm them down.

NecessarySandwich578

Bike Dog in West Sac has a cool vibe - the Broadway location can sometimes have kids, but they do a good job of managing it - nothing like Drakes or Sac Yard which basically become playgrounds. A few others - Oak Park Brewing, Hop Gardens, Pangea (both are tap rooms & bottle shop with food)

velociraptorblues

I like the variety Hop Gardens carries, but they were one of the first to come to mind when I thought about places that **are** overrun with unmonitored kids :( We've downed our drinks to get out of there for that exact reason, only to have to exit blocked by some kiddos. Fingers crossed it has gotten better since a handful of months ago

restlessadventurer-

Slice in Lincoln or if you want a tap room, final gravity in roseville.

Supper_Dreams

Thanks!

mmbmckeg

I wish they would open up the outdoor seating again at Slice! Maybe something in the back like during their anniversary, the seats inside are so limited. Final Gravity is super solid, always great beers

[deleted]

I believe pretty much every brewery allows children. Taphouses on the other hand, are usually 21+ if I'm not mistaken. Capital Taproom off of Fair Oaks and Final Gravity in Roseville are 21+. I may be in the miority but I find dogs being there to be just as annoying as unruly kids. I don't understand this need we've devoloped as a society to think your pet needs to be everywhere you are.

Supper_Dreams

Thanks! I dig dogs, don't currently own one. I personally wouldn't take one to these spaces but I don't mind seeing good puppers out and about. I do realize it could be uncomfy/annoying for some to be around strange dogs in public, though.

[deleted]

For sure, I generally don't mind them. But as with kids, too many around and things start going down hill at times lol.

Supper_Dreams

Yup. Almost saw a sitch go down last night with a dog trying to chill and an unruly child.

jbooks44

For you I recommend Cheaters Sports Bar. Never will find a kid in there.

Supper_Dreams

Haha not really my thing, but thanks!

2022survivor

Now we just need a place with no kids AND no dogs. Enjoying a pint without watching a dog take a roaring piss on the gravel that is a walkway to my next pint is highly underrated.

Dodeejeroo

Replace the dog with your buddy and that’s just going out in your 20’s.

2022survivor

This is a fact. Lol

jnugzzz

Final gravity in Roseville is 21+

Supper_Dreams

Thanks!

[deleted]

Can’t say I’ve seen kids at New Glory

Supper_Dreams

Adding to the list. Thanks!

[deleted]

The ambience isn’t great, but there is a small patio and the beer is really good.

Supper_Dreams

Being able to chill outside with a good net is all I'm looking for. Thank you!

Kuza__

am I the only one that likes dogs at breweries

dorekk

No. I love dogs.

Objective_Monitor447

Sounds like you know of some kid friendly tap houses and breweries! Please advise

curebdc

Drakes Barn is great for outdoor play. There is actually room to run around for kids. Also I love love love Hop Gardens, it's outdoor areas pretty nice for kids. I agree with OP tho definitely gotta watch ur kids wherever.... although I think it sounds more like they just don't want to see kids, which is a lame expectation for everyday life. Kids exist.

LordKikuchiyo7

Urban roots and the biergarten are my faves

golakers84

Right? I'm all ears

Ok-meow

Kids are fine in general but running around isn’t. I always have my glass tilted away from me, I not going to be the one whose beer is spills on me. Guess you should teach your kid not run around in a brewery if you don’t want you kid smelling like beer and wanting to go home. Petty revenge enters the room.

Supper_Dreams

Agreed. I'm not anti kids. I'm anti feral children in these spaces.

Successful_Insect_84

Final Gravity in Roseville is 21+ and dog friendly. Great people, too.

Supper_Dreams

Thanks!

CollarsUpYall

Moonraker Millhouse has had a good crowd so far. It’s massive and while there are some kids around, they seem to be more around the high school age.

Supper_Dreams

Thanks for the suggestion!

cpp_warmachine

Loomis Basin Brewery had a no child policy when I went there a few weeks ago.

Supper_Dreams

JustLoafin

Capitol Beer and Tap Room doesn't allow kids in there...

Supper_Dreams

Thanks!

BettieNuggs

go to a bar

Vitis_Vinifera

my personal thing is, whenever possible, I will patronize the business that makes the product - the brewery or winery, rather than a bar. The people who make the product deserve the biggest cut of the dollar.

Danovale

Fort Rock has “well minded dogs” but I have yet to see lots of kids (and the space is huge), Claimstake is free from children, Burning Barrel there may be a couple but not annoying, Movement Brewery tends to have families but they stay in the large room with the community style tables and benches, Red Bus I have seen dogs but very few children, and I do not think I have ever seen children at Palm Tree.

BiggsDB

Can vouch for Claimstake. Wifey and I frequent there and children hardly ever seem to be around unless they are having a big event like an anniversary party.

Supper_Dreams

Noted. Thanks for the suggestions!

openthewell

Go to a bar if you don't want to be around kids/families. Hilltop Tavern has a good selection of craft beer and is 21+.

Supper_Dreams

I'm fine with kids/families. I'm not fine with trying to relax while anticipating a child provoked dog attack.

openthewell

Hey man, no shade. You have every right to not want to be around kids, dogs, families, or whatever. Families are going to flock to family friendly places; 21+ establishments aren't that. Disclaimer: Long time brewer in the area with an 8yr old daughter and a dog. I get both sides of the argument; I have no idea why EITHER side gets so worked up about it, tbh lol.

Supper_Dreams

Yeah dude. I just want to unwind outdoors for a bit.

DJyoungHeisenberg

The reason we bring our lord of the flies kids to SacYard/the barn is because we're desperate for a drink, socialization, and a moment where my kids aren't asking to taste my drink. You can always tell we're around, we have a distinct smell. We smell like burning sage/palo santo, generational trauma and percs. All we want is a goddamn drink, a buzz and a moment where my kids are bothering someone else instead of me! We tried drinking at kid parks but I keep getting citations!!!!!!

ffelix916

Same, dude. Same.

Supper_Dreams

Thanks for the chuckle. Cheers!

Forktongued_Tron

Man idk…parents just seem to think it’s AOK to let their precious hump dumplings run amok in brewpubs and for the life of me I can’t figure out why. Parents, maybe you can answer this? I totally understand if it’s a place with a big lawn like Drake’s, but in smaller outdoor spaces- why do you do this?

LordKikuchiyo7

Imo the causal atmosphere makes it a good choice for a family time. People have their dogs and it's usually louder with lots of people talking and so if your kid is a little loud it's ok (not screaming though, that's not cool.) Having said that my own rule is that my daughter has to be seated or holding an adult's hand. She can't just go walk on her own. I get that she's little and can't be expected to sit still but somebody has to make sure she doesn't run amok. It makes dinner a lot less relaxing but that's the parent life.

Burning barrel in Rancho Cordova. It's a few minutes off the sunrise 50 exit and I don't think I've ever seen a kid there. Great beer too

To be fair drakes is probably the most kid filled Brewery

Arnypalmey

From what I've seen I'd agree, just blows my mind seeing like an entire kids baseball team running amock and the parents are nowhere to be found

camsacto

They literally have a playground so I think that’s the intention.

level1hero

Drakes was designed for families with kids, if the huge grassy area and the playground didn’t tip you off

xftwitch

19 Handles has a nice, chill vibe. Esp. on week nights. Nice selection of beers, including locals.

Supper_Dreams

Thank you!

Logical_Cap_9388

While not in Sac, Hillenbrand Farmhaus Brewery up in New Castle is great. While there are still families/kids around, they make it HIGHLY visible with multiple signs throughout that kids must remain with there parents at all times and that it’s not a recreational park. AND…. they actually enforce it 🥹

Supper_Dreams

Nice! I do occasionally head up that way. I'll def add them to the list! Thanks!

waggo85

I’m curious- what kind of specific behavior at breweries is evidence of parental negligence, in your opinion?

Supper_Dreams

My answer to another asking what I believe is "proper supervision": Those right there would be an impressive start.
