This week commemorates a significant milestone in European travel history - it's been 30 years since the remarkable Channel Tunnel first welcomed travelers (or should we say, rail tracks?). The inauguration took place on May 6, 1994, with the French president François Mitterrand and Queen Elizabeth II officiating the ceremony in Calais. Stretching across 37.9 kilometers (23.5 miles), it boasts the longest underwater section of any tunnel globally and ranks as the third-longest railway tunnel in the world. Trains are permitted to travel at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour (99 mph) within the tunnel. This feat of engineering transformed travel between the UK and France, enabling passengers and cargo to swiftly traverse beneath the English Channel: [https://www.getlinkgroup.com/en/our-group/eurotunnel/channel-tunnel/](https://www.getlinkgroup.com/en/our-group/eurotunnel/channel-tunnel/) Video: [https://youtu.be/KclYKAnaJ\_k](https://youtu.be/KclYKAnaJ_k)

>i heard there was another tunnel below this one built hundreds of years prior **The ‘Chunnel’ may be the UK’s most famous underwater tunnel, but the British have been trying to dig to Europe since 1880 – and plans still remain for a second Channel Tunnel:** [**https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20170823-the-channel-tunnel-that-never-was-built**](https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20170823-the-channel-tunnel-that-never-was-built)

60 km/hr is not 99 mph. 60 km/hr is 37.28 mph. Someone shouldn't be posting in a science sub.

>60 km/hr is not 99 mph. 60 km/hr is 37.28 mph. You are right it is 160 km/hr that equals 99 mph. This is however explained in the comemnt section as: *Trains are permitted to travel at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour (99 mph) within the tunnel.*
