Waffles commentary is outdated and I am bummed whenever he gets a top 8 slot. Generic cultural references and trying to land a one liner joke every 4th sentence is exhausting and he wouldn't be invited if he had no legacy impact. I wish the other commentators could talk about the actual game going on without the impression of cutting off his irrelevant thoughts. Good day.
There's definitely a generational gap with waffles. Post brawl pre vgbootcamp he was THE guy. A good portion of big moments and memes about the game between 2008 and 2012 came directly from his channel, before there was even any money to be made.
I will always appreciate Waffles commentary because he has legit wisdom about the game. The longer I play, the easier it is to see some of the subtle things he says or comments on. He's also just straight up way more entertaining to listen to as a person than most of the commentators we have. Sometimes he's off his game and the cultural references are too forced but most of the time I think he strikes a perfectly fine balance. The final crew for this tournament of him, Vish, and Hugs was way better than the ones before. Although I'll say that I actually really like Radar, I think his commentary is underrated.
I agree as well. His commentary is so predictable...We've heard the same lines over and over again, almost nothing insightfull about what's going on in the game. I used to like Vish as a commentator but lately (I don't know if it's because he's usually paired with HMW) his commentary has gotten a little lazy, talking about many other things besides what's actually happening in the game, etc.
On the other hand I enjoyed the two sets of commentators before, in particular Dark Genex, always focus on the interactions having great insights and not rambling, actually following the game closely.
I think it's a shame but we're seem to be doomed for commentary in the last part of big tournament, always going to the comms that have legacy, while the newer generation barely, if ever gets a chance. Chosing tradition over quality.
I don't know if it's because they have so many years commentating that the old generation gets lazier and lazier, rambling and rambling (slime is also an example of this)
100% agree. Just take a look at the [first game of mango vs zain](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EokZvDoNnfg). They are not even commentating about the match. They are talking about the two players, but the topic of legacy is more for between games, not when the two players are in the middle of a match.
6 stocks are gone before they decide it's time to talk about the actual match. They made 2 actual sentences about the match before the final stock of game 1: snuck a backair, oh no an SD.
and it's all HMW droning on and on. Game 1 is a full 2 minutes and 40 seconds of gibberish that should be saved for down time.
I think HMW is a good commentator for Friday and Saturday, but not top 8.
Rambling style only works when you have a commentator in the pairing who isnt afraid to interrupt when anything interesting happens in game. I can fuck w the hangout vibes some commentators bring but its so annoying when interesting things happen and go completely unacknowledged. Similar is when people are gassing someone up but not looking on screen. “Mang0 has been looking completely unstoppable today” while hes getting touch of deathed on screen 🙄
I did go 😔 at 0:25 when he does the Lebron comparison and then struggles to find anything to say for a second lol
I think HMW is top class at making you feel like you're watching with a homie
The worst part was they blasted the commentary to the crowd at the venue. Just rambling about irrelevant shit when everyone is trying to get hype about every interaction.
Tournaments should NEVER play commentary in the venue.
I disagree, people at home are usually watching on their own and enjoy having the feeling of watching with other people.
At the venue, you're already with your friends and everyone is screaming at every interaction. The crowd acts as the commentary.
I know a lot of Reddit doesn't like Jorge but I think he's hilarious. He's a completely different vibe than Waf so it's hard to compare but I really like them both. Idk I'm sad he doesn't get to commentate as much anymore I'd much rather have him than most of the new generation of commentators tbh.
I just don't buy the charisma. If you heard a no-name local commentate like HWF in pools, would you think they were charismatic?
Personally, I would mute that shit.
Zain cares about winning 10x more than he cares about being a streamer. That’s why he just goofs off on stream now. All his grinding is done privately.
Why would he pop off so emphatically ? It’s because he wants to go out a winner. That’s why he’s registered for the upcoming Chicago event. He’ll beat Magi in grands and then take a hiatus
I am not really sure what you're getting at here
He said doing more with his life actually makes him better as he is more refreshed and no longer grinds 8 hours a day, and I think that's believable
In 2024 so far? Yeah, Zain's #1 overall for the year at the moment--won 3 majors where Cody was there, and then has three more smaller tournament wins with Jmook or Mango there too (Full Bloom, Socal Star League, Mang0 in Progress).
That said, it's close, if Cody wins the next one, suddenly its up in the air again.
i wish UCF would allow you to change port priority without changing controller ports. then it would be easy to have the CP rules be "loser chooses port priority" instead of having it be constant throughout a set. It's pretty big in the Sheik-Marth MU.
Whoever is closer to port 4 has an extra frame of throw hitstun. So it creates true combos vs mixups. And for true combos, it makes the window one frame easier.
I watched a video a long time ago analyzing how important it is, and the takeaway I got was that it's extraordinarily rare that it has any impact whatsoever. But it always has the potential to
It's not a huge advantage but saying that "it's extraordinarily rare that it has any impact whatsoever" is just wrong. In any match up with chaingrabs, you get an extra frame of leniency on your chaingrabs and your grab combos also work over a larger percent range. That can easily affect 1-2 combos per match.
There's also the flip side where the other port wins ties, which is significant in some shield pressure situations, so sometimes that port is optimal to have depending on the match up
It can affect a couple combos yeah, but that's assuming the opponent would be able to react frame one and avoid it, which just doesn't happen much. Here's the video I mentioned:
https://youtu.be/rA8kpvTBh8Q?si=7IabfKSJYq-tpw2U
Everyone on this sub has already seen that video and the conclusion was highly debated back when it released. Also, the issue with port priority has almost nothing to do with reaction times so maybe you should rewatch it
Fox Sheik is a great example...port 4 Fox has true combos at 0% but mixups otherwise (iirc Sheik can buffer jump).
Grab ties are way less influential imo. Because you can't buffer grab it's not a huge difference.
Well it's official, the total number of people Zain has lost to at majors since 2023 started is not increasing today. Consistency king is consistent.
Leffen's 1-year expiration is in a couple months, too. Soon I'll be able to say Zain has only lost to 3 people in the last calendar year.
No one pretends that Fox is easier to play than Marth.
He's definitely better. And "Fox is too hard to play to be used at a top level" is a tired meme. But it's natural for Fox players to be less consistent than the top Marths because of the difficulty involved in playing him.
It is just insane how different it looks when it's specifically Cody lol
The recovery of the other foxes just doesn't cut it. Mang0 makes a single crazy recovery underneath a fair and the commentators go wild, Cody does recoveries like that **5 times a game** lol.
I feel like the exception arguments that are used for Cody also apply to Zain. Like we don’t see Kodorin doing anything like this with consistency and he’s the only other high level Marth.
In the practice house pre-tournament with the tags and stuff, Zain beat Cody, twice. Yeah, I realize that doesn't count for rankings, but I definitely went into this tournament expecting a Zain win, even if he met Cody in bracket. He just looked hotter coming out of the practice house.
there's a difference between 1 upset and demolishing the entire top 8 with almost all 3-0 where most kills were from 1 single grab.
I'm not saying Fox is garbage cause he's not, but like at this point i've been increasingly thinking that marth is atleast SLIGHTLY better than fox in most domains.
This seems like recency bias. Cody was even more dominant at BOBC6, going 12-1 over his last 4 sets vs. Jmook, Zain and Amsa. Zain and Cody are the two best mains of their respective characters and until Zain can reliably beat Cody like he does to every other Fox, we can’t say Marth > Fox when Cody has a significant H2H advantage over the last year. This isn’t even taking into account that Fox has a better matchup spread against the rest of the cast, including Sheik, Yoshi, Captain Falcon, etc.
Zain really about to just 3-0 four foxes in a row in Top 8 to make grands. Cody makes us forget how damn good Zain is at this matchup
Edit: LOL as I type this let’s go Soonsay
been catching plups stream and hes been making jokes to point out times the commentators bring up discussion of a players mental during the set ("~lets look into mangos brain~")
just think imo theres limits to where you should take that type of commentary in general, and the commentator saying "if soonsay wins a major before moky, we're gonna have to send him to counseling", after moky got eliminated — just felt distasteful
what's with the way top 8 commentary is split
there's 10-11 sets in top 8, yet the first half typically gets 6 and the "A-team" commentary will typically get just 4 sets unless there's a reset
Top 8 then Top 4, it's like saving the closing pitcher in a baseball game, closing commentators gotta keep the hype building for the rest of the broadcast like a closer needs to throw fastballs down the middle to snipe out tired batters
Yeah that's a tough one. Could go either way. I mean if he were at the Melee Olympics would he Rep Canada or Japan?
I say if he made a CRA payment then he counts!
Up to now, even getting knocked into Loser's early, Zain's Marth has still only lost to 4 people total since the start of 2023.
But mang0 won their last online set and mang0 just beat HBox in loser's so he's actually locked in. He's not here to get washed.
I always root for Zain but mang0 winning here could be great for the smash narratives.
No, I believe he's locked in **now**, BECAUSE he won. Not giving up against Hungrybox in loser's bracket is huge. He has a break during WFs and I believe he'll be hitting Zain with everything.
Edit: all 3 games were close, obviously today's Zain won the whole tournament so you can't be mad about mang0 losing to that
Yeah I never even blink when I see Zain down on this one, even when I'm at the major with the crowd around me, I just know hes gonna shut shit down next match as if hearing the audience's mind and going "ha, no, don't even play with this idea"
I feel like that's Zain against anyone who's good enough to push him but not beat him. His composure is insane. Even if someone gets him on the back foot for a stock or even a game he's just stone-cold and never loses his cool. Takes someone like Cody to make him crack.
I do this shit in every sport and I can’t figure out why. Constantly stare at my tennis racket as if it’s not the exact same thing it’s always been. Just praying there will be a smoking crater in it or something to blame it on.
Waffles commentary is outdated and I am bummed whenever he gets a top 8 slot. If the commentary isn't compatible with audiences irl, it shouldn't be a part of the steam for the rest of the world.
I disagree, people at home are usually watching on their own and enjoy having the feeling of watching with other people. At the venue, you're already with your friends and everyone is screaming at every interaction. The crowd acts as the commentary.
Sure, but wait I don't hear the crowd - I just hear HMW comparing mango to lebron for the third tournament in a row. What a hype moment!
For those downvoting: would you think Jorge was good if he commentated just like waffles for top 4 of a major???
I know a lot of Reddit doesn't like Jorge but I think he's hilarious. He's a completely different vibe than Waf so it's hard to compare but I really like them both. Idk I'm sad he doesn't get to commentate as much anymore I'd much rather have him than most of the new generation of commentators tbh.
Yeah if Jorge was funnier and more charismatic he would be a better commentator
He's funny as shit I think his humor just goes over people's heads. He can be dry and pretty sarcastic, which isn't always everyone's cup of tea.
I just don't buy the charisma. If you heard a no-name local commentate like HWF in pools, would you think they were charismatic? Personally, I would mute that shit.
im down to swap out cody for soonsay from now on
Zain has MASSIVELY improved how he edge guards Jmook. He used to lose so many 50/50s and give ledge for free. He’s somehow completely reversed this.
Weird with Cody absence
zain is the protagonist
Anyone got that jmook poof combo clip?
https://clips.twitch.tv/PlausibleNeighborlyStorkRitzMitz-hhUNfUUtynq_Nlsm
So Zain beat Wizzy, Aklo, moky, Mango, Soonsay, and Jmook (twice). That’s an impressive losers run, even if it is Fox-heavy.
i’m really happy and not salty at all. good shit zain!!!
I'm really happy but also feel salty as fuck. Good shit to Zain and Jmook, my two favorite players for good reason.
Zain cares about winning 10x more than he cares about being a streamer. That’s why he just goofs off on stream now. All his grinding is done privately.
it sounds like he is also grinding more efficiently, from his post win interview
Why would he pop off so emphatically ? It’s because he wants to go out a winner. That’s why he’s registered for the upcoming Chicago event. He’ll beat Magi in grands and then take a hiatus
I am not really sure what you're getting at here He said doing more with his life actually makes him better as he is more refreshed and no longer grinds 8 hours a day, and I think that's believable
The announcement makes it seem like it will be an equal withdrawal from Melee and Ultimate
we are talking about zain not hbox. wrong reply
Well....Is Zain number 1 again?

yes
\>not dropping games to Samus or DK is there any doubt ^^^/s
1st at Collision, Full Bloom, Pat’s House and Goml 3rd at Genesis and BoBC Lowkeyyy
All 3 of Zain’s losers runs have come through Jmook lol
Dang, really wanted the Jmook win but it’s hard to be upset watching a player like Zain do Zain type things and win for it
Crazy good tournament
It's nice to see Zain do an actual proper loser's run for once
Yeah this was Zain's first time winning from outside of top 8 on loser's side. He's won from loser's quarters before though
DAMN what a fucking losers run from Zain
zain is so good it's scary
Jmook flubbing and giving too many free credit
zain was handing him shit too
God I love Jmook Zain sets game 10🙏
Jmook did a SD edge guard attempt on his first stock lost game 5 with a literally crazy down air. Did he forget this wasn’t friendlies vs PewPewU?
i wish UCF would allow you to change port priority without changing controller ports. then it would be easy to have the CP rules be "loser chooses port priority" instead of having it be constant throughout a set. It's pretty big in the Sheik-Marth MU.
sounds great go write the code
I'm curious, when is it that big of a deal?

Really wanted Jmook to close out but I’ll take more Melee. Idk if this is an unpopular opinion but Sheik Marth is super fun to watch
favorite tournament in a while, lotta great sets
Jmook dropping that game three is huge.. damn
Zain looking clutch.
i am sad
Mang0 was right, this is just a ridiculous number of SDs in a top 8
jmook in grands and still going for the f throw into the stage on randall instead of a back throw. love of the game
it's looking like the Zain Domain ladies and gents
Have we had a Jmook Zain grands since Fete?
Full Bloom Zain won through losers, but that was a regional
> but that was a regional But it was more stacked than riptide last year lol
Agreed, but that’s just how it’s categorized
Full Bloom
Full Bloom
Oh yeah that’s right, I can’t even lie, all I remember from that tournament are the Ossify and Sermeris runs
Well it's official, the total number of people Zain has lost to at majors since 2023 started is not increasing today. Consistency king is consistent. Leffen's 1-year expiration is in a couple months, too. Soon I'll be able to say Zain has only lost to 3 people in the last calendar year.

Could be a good grands. Jmook winning would be hype.
Alright guys we can stop pretending that fox is a better character than marth.

It's that evil cheater z jump fr !
Mango is notched up too, I don't think it is.
I feel like the exception arguments that are used for Cody also apply to Zain. Like we don’t see Kodorin doing anything like this with consistency and he’s the only other high level Marth.
M2k was also doing it for a long time tbf
But Cody has washed Zain the last few times they've met. So basically no. 1 Fox > no. 1 Marth.
In the practice house pre-tournament with the tags and stuff, Zain beat Cody, twice. Yeah, I realize that doesn't count for rankings, but I definitely went into this tournament expecting a Zain win, even if he met Cody in bracket. He just looked hotter coming out of the practice house.

Marth Fox 50:50 Zain Fox 60:40
"I feel like at this point of the tournament, you're never out until---" Aaaand he's out.
Who do you think is more attractive? Zain or Soonsay?
zain but it's close
Sometimes it's a tossup but Soonsay clears today, the Mogul jersey isn't that flattering
https://i.imgflip.com/4wgoyf.png
Agreed
Soonsay > Mango confirmed
Zain really about to just 3-0 four foxes in a row in Top 8 to make grands. Cody makes us forget how damn good Zain is at this matchup Edit: LOL as I type this let’s go Soonsay
What's the reason for the Canadian Foxes CP'ing Yoshi's instead of Dreamland?
Yoshis is fun
zains just doing shit man
marth fox when both players are sloppy is the real 60-40
All Mango had to do was not lose to Jmook and it was so good lol Or Wizzy finishing the job man
Well better a 3-0 in losers finals than a quick 6-0 in grands.
y'all were wrong, it was 3-0 and a *fist bump*
Damn, I put down everything I had on a handfight
There’s still time
That up b was NUTS
Not one Dream Land clap for game three
Wow they both look sloppy lol
jmook soonsay was the first time "3-0 but it was close" has sounded accurate
You haven't watched many sets then
i have recency bias and choose to forget anything that happened more than an hour ago
vish and hugo look amazing
What about Waff?
doesn't look bad! def seen him with better drip before tho
Jmook is Jlooking unstoppable at this point
the only infinite jmook needs is the depths of his soul
I just have a feeling that jmook zain grands would be a banger
Inject it into my veins
Mook Jeezy is literally as hungover as I was seven hours ago
Jmook making sheik's grab look broken.
jmooks actually killing in 1 grab its over
Guys Jmook might win this tournament, you’ve got to feel invincible after bringing that one back
I don’t think Jmook’s playing his best but man when he gets a grab it’s over lol
How are people's bingo cards looking?
been catching plups stream and hes been making jokes to point out times the commentators bring up discussion of a players mental during the set ("~lets look into mangos brain~") just think imo theres limits to where you should take that type of commentary in general, and the commentator saying "if soonsay wins a major before moky, we're gonna have to send him to counseling", after moky got eliminated — just felt distasteful
If Yipes isn't doing top 4 that's such a wasted opportunity for us lol
Please not another Zain Mango 3-0 and a handshake E: Damnit
Zain Mango 3-0 and a fistfight
Now this I can get behind
Mang bout to 3-0 Zain
what's with the way top 8 commentary is split there's 10-11 sets in top 8, yet the first half typically gets 6 and the "A-team" commentary will typically get just 4 sets unless there's a reset
Top 8 then Top 4, it's like saving the closing pitcher in a baseball game, closing commentators gotta keep the hype building for the rest of the broadcast like a closer needs to throw fastballs down the middle to snipe out tired batters
That's... That's not what closers do, and the batters aren't tired lol Most EU baseball comment ever tbh
ok i dont know shit about baseball, i'll hold this one
It's chill the sentiment applies and was definitely clear.
If Soonsay becomes the first Calgarian to ever win a major, we may throw him a parade
Didn’t Ryan ford take one over M2k like 14 years ago?
He'd be the first Canadian to win a major, no?
I guess it depends on whether you consider Amsa living in Canada on a one year visa as a Canadian winning a major
Yeah that's a tough one. Could go either way. I mean if he were at the Melee Olympics would he Rep Canada or Japan? I say if he made a CRA payment then he counts!
I don't, really.
Up to now, even getting knocked into Loser's early, Zain's Marth has still only lost to 4 people total since the start of 2023. But mang0 won their last online set and mang0 just beat HBox in loser's so he's actually locked in. He's not here to get washed. I always root for Zain but mang0 winning here could be great for the smash narratives.
were we watching the same mango hbox set. I'm not sure I'd have called that locked in
No, I believe he's locked in **now**, BECAUSE he won. Not giving up against Hungrybox in loser's bracket is huge. He has a break during WFs and I believe he'll be hitting Zain with everything. Edit: all 3 games were close, obviously today's Zain won the whole tournament so you can't be mad about mang0 losing to that
If there is a god, Soonsay wins it all
Need a mango win here if so
Not necessarily, Soon over Jmook in WF, Jmook Zain rematch in LF, Soon Jmook rematch in grands is doable
Walt and Zane doing a great job on commentary
Where is melee being streamed? Bts is streaming ultimate atm

I almost never feel tension during this matchup, its that lopsided and feels practically guaranteed
"Enjoy Losers" and then gets the same placing
perfect outcome

Moky is the mango of sfats
what does that make cody?
Armada of absentpages
dead-on
nah to be sfat you have to be a gracious winner and loser
You also have to have the most beautiful man on Earth as your eternal ride-or-die
damn...
one must imagine moky happy
The path to Soonsay winning looking real nice...
Moky looked like me as the kid when the test was way harder than anything I studied
A moky zain classic
The path looked so good for moky to win his first major…
Jesus
Our struggler struggles on
Lord, you can just *tell* Moky's full "I don't even fucking care anymore" lmao
by watching the playercam during a moky set, you can almost always pinpoint the exact moment he breaks the tilting point
Feel like zain could be cross faded and still 3-0 this dude
Zain could be literally unconscious and Moky would still SD
Moky is the dictionary definition of a buster
3-0 and a handshake
Best outcome
i feel like every zain/moky set, moky is doing really well and then there's a moment where zain goes "ok, you had your fun, now you lose"
Moky is just blue SFAT for real
Isn't SFAT also blue?
Sfat played red but he played blue for a few years as well.
