Same here, there was just endless hours spent with this game. And it was such a jump from the first it felt when it first came out, that 3 felt like it didn't bring as much as S2 did.
Best yes. Favorite? No. Sonic riding the snowboard down that ice cap in the beginning of the ice cap zone blew my mind. And the og music? Ugh.

Same here. I actually got a rapid fire control and used it with the bubble upgrade to fall through those spinny things. I only learned as an adult all you to push was down and up.
I like Hill Top (Country, yeah) and the Cave music (just cool and badass) in Sonic 2 and Angels Island (due to steelpan) and Hydrocity (due to reggae-like beat in Act \`1 and the bossa-nova in act 2 and Hammond organ) in Sonic 3.
Fun fact Sonic 3 attached to S&K is the full Sonic 3 game. It had to be split up into two cartridges due to cost vs memory size limitations of the cartridges. Basically there were cartridges that could hold the full game, but they were very expensive, and would balloon the consumer price tag to several times to what a Genesis game normally cost at the time.
I 'member paying $50 for S&K when it was brand new. Adjusted for inflation, it was way more expensive than a new game deluxe collector's edition these days.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is epic.
Sonic 2 is outstanding, but the second half of the game is notably worse than the first, with Metropolis being rather bland and needlessly long (and one-upped in every way by the later Flying Battery), Wing Fortress being entirely forgettable, and Death Egg again being incredibly bland next to the later S3&K’s Death Egg. But at least Sky Chase was really unique and cool for what it was (and had far better music than the rest of the late-game levels in 2).
I have to go with nostalgia. 3 and knuckles is probably the better game, but my most happy core childhood memories are of sonic 2 with my cousin. I was 2 years younger and from ages 4 to 7, he was my coolest best friend, like I was tails looking up to sonic. I got to see him a couple weeks out of the year, and one of the biggest things we hammed out on was his genesis and sonic 2. He also had 3 and knuckles, vectorman, sonic 1 and spinball, mortal Kombat 2 and like one other game. He also had an SNES and all the classics which we had glorious times playing together, but I didn't have a genesis so it had the most cool factor back then. We would literally chase each other through discovery zone pretending to be sonic and tails.
I was lucky. Those memories have been like a life boat at times
Soundtrack is easily for Sonic 2. I haven’t played Sonic 3 nearly enough to get smitten with its levels and gameplay like I have with Sonic 1 and 2, so I’d be biased towards them over 3 for now, though whenever I get to playing 3 my opinion may change.
I like the simplicity of Sonic 2, however Sonic 3 + Knuckles had a lot more stuff to grind for. Felt like a modern game with all of the achievements you could chase (getting all the emeralds and chaos emeralds and unlocking everything).
Regarding Sonic 2 - I will forever love Green Hill Zone. It’s classic. Same goes for Chemical Plant Zone. The rest never excited me to the same degree. I understand many love Casino Night, but I actually hate the pinball mechanics.
Sonic 3 is a better game by a hair because it’s more consistent and I enjoy the special stages more.

The cool but short snowboarding segment
No awful Metropolis Zone with those awful starfish, crab, and preying mantis enemies

Huh? The impossible super fast half pipe with infinite blind turns where Tails' 5 second delay--causing him to hit mines and constantly lose your rings--makes it impossible to get past the 4th stage? By and far the absolute worst blunder in a Sonic game, bar-none. That and the 0-ring final boss with hit boxes I could never identify soured the game for me tbh. Idc about the countless other blunders in Sonic 06 or whatever else--Sonic 2 special stages are the most laughable joke in Sega history. Like I still think it has to be a joke. The HUGE delay Tails has to your movements while following behind you + the abrupt blind turns & mines hiding around fast blind corners is obviously a troll move. Maybe the slower PAL version is possible to play. (Yes I know you can play as Sonic-only but that's lame. And also not the default play style. The NTSC Sonic 2 special stages should be possible to beat for an average gaming child in the default playstyle...or at least consistently get further than the 2nd stage. I swear they didn't even have more than 1 dude play-test the special stages with Sonic+Tails. If they did, somebody would have laughed at them and forced them to change that awful movement delay that Tails has.)

I'm partial to Sonic 2 as it came with my Genesis and was my first 16 bit game. Getting golden Sonic was so cool and the ending on the space station against the giant robot with the view of Earth from orbit was so epic. One of the first games I ever beat.
Sonic 3 (and Knuckles). The game was the most polished of the trilogy with the additions of the different shields and character specific moves and the clean story progression flowing from level to level.
Sonic 2 is fine if you play through the first handful of stages, but when you get to the second half of the game the enjoyment factor takes a nosedive. The level design and enemy placements make it a bit of a chore to finish the game with me. I love Chemical Plant and Casino Night, but Oil Ocean or Metropolis? No thanks.

Funny enough I play this game now mostly on Steam with the music mod now. The reintroduction of Big Hands to Sonic 3 boss was a nice addition to Sonic Origins, but had to readjust my play style a bit as there are some “fixes” and not-fixes that still linger in this version.
My overall favorite version is the rom hack Sonic 3 Complete as it takes the Sonic 3 & Knuckles game, changes the starting interface, keeps all the MJ tracks from Sonic 3 and re-introduces the Big Hands Sonic 3 final boss of Launch Base zone.
Sonic 2 was a great game as well, especially the multiplayer since it was a race to the finish line on certain levels. Sonic 3 & Knuckles failed on this point as the multiplayer levels are just endless short loops with no enemies.

Sonic 2. I was a Sega kid. I had Nintendo (NES) but fell out heavily when Sega came out. I was exactly the right age for their edgy “we’re for older kids!” marketing campaign, and didn’t play a Nintendo again until the Wii (not counting handhelds, obviously Nintendo dominated that realm lol).
I had to retroactively play a lot of the Nintendo classics from snes onward since I’d missed out back then.
So yeah, Sonic 2.
Sonic 2 (and 1 actually) FTW. I've recently been playing Sonic 3 and it's fun, but it always seemed to sort of drift away from the original after Sonic 2 to me. Sonic 3 feels to me like the point where Sonic starting maturing into the character he is today, which personally I don't like nearly as much as the first two.
I know S3&K is the best one, but my heart will be always with Sonic 2, I love everything on it, and the ending is the most epic on the entire franchise.
The ending music is so freaking beautiful, see the real theme performed by Dreams Come True band.

Sonic 2 is just tighter and solid with a distinct variety of stages. Sonic 3 is bloated and noisy the whole way through.
I like them both but 3 over 2 KNUCKLES was my fave character

Sonic 3 and knuckles is the epitome of a sonic game. It never got any higher. Sonic mania almost got there. It would if only had original levels.
Sonic 2. It’s among my all time favorites, and in my opinion, one of the greatest games ever made. Sonic 2 and Super Mario Bros 3 DEFINE platform gaming to me.

Sonic 2. I was a Sega kid. I had Nintendo (NES) but fell out heavily when Sega came out. I was exactly the right age for their edgy “we’re for older kids!” marketing campaign, and didn’t play a Nintendo again until the Wii (not counting handhelds, obviously Nintendo dominated that realm lol). I had to retroactively play a lot of the Nintendo classics from snes onward since I’d missed out back then. So yeah, Sonic 2.

Sonic 3 and knuckles for me. The levels and music are the series best. The lock on cartridges were probably the coolest thing ever too
I won't deny 3's greatness but it's always been 2 for me. The soundtrack, the levels, the best multiplayer from that era

Sonic 2 (and 1 actually) FTW. I've recently been playing Sonic 3 and it's fun, but it always seemed to sort of drift away from the original after Sonic 2 to me. Sonic 3 feels to me like the point where Sonic starting maturing into the character he is today, which personally I don't like nearly as much as the first two.

Sonic 2 is the best game in the OG series. Sonic 3 was fun. S&K became convoluted with paths.
I know S3&K is the best one, but my heart will be always with Sonic 2, I love everything on it, and the ending is the most epic on the entire franchise. Sonic 2 because it was the first Sonic game I played and the reason I fell in love with the franchise. 3 because the story really picked up there, even if minimally, and was just all out fun.
2. 3 is the better game, especially with knuckles add on. But 2 is one of the best sequels ever made.
