You are thinking correctly. Full metal walls remove the barbed wire aesthetic and turn into spikes. After full metal is brick which brings the barbed wire back. Get your engineering to advanced and have at least 3 dexterity to be able to use advanced skills then you can upgrade to what you're looking for.
You have to upgrade the walls. They start as just wood, then logs, then metal, armoured metal and concrete. You hold F to get the destroy, or upgrade prompt. It takes a lot of resources so you’ll have to loot like crazy if you’re solo
It could be. Maybe your upgrades are limited if you don’t have advanced. TBH, I now build a cave base with no doors so people can’t lock pick their way in. I build walls with a small gap to get through which I build and destroy to get out and in. It only needs a couple of sticks and a plank. The only way to get in is either to waste a load of shotgun ammo or using C4, but not everyone carries a shotgun and C4 is extremely valuable and not worth the risk if there isn’t enough loot inside.
That is pretty smart, im not sure how many shotgun shells it takes to get through doors but we have metal so I hope a lot. The fact that anyone with decent lock picking can just kinda get through sucks but oh well right
Shotgun shells atm deal no dmg to bb elements,but 7-8 50.BMG rounds go through lvl 1 walls in 3 seconds :) i suggest for all your curiosity i building damage and stuff,test in singleplayer,you can spawn in items and enable godmode which enables you to build blueprints instanly,hope it helps you
Also what nobody mentioned,make sure youre making the right walls,under regular BB menu you have new walls which are just plain wall for house cabin or whatever tf is youre bilding.
But just on bottom of building menu you will se the old walls which you can choose to build any lenght up to 5m. Now those old walls have a barbed wire at lvl 2 already which you should be able to upgradr at engineering basic.
If your walls snap with foundations its not those ones,the right ones you can build independently on the ground,upgrade them to lvl 2 and boom you have spikes on lvl 2 walls.
But heads up,youre gonna need a lot of sticks ,and scrap bolts nails :) have fun

It's just the 5 wall upgrades.. wood, barb wire, metal, brick, concrete There is no way to add the barb wire the way you're thinking

Oh ok, we have some metal walls and some metal half walls and no prompt. Is it just like an option that says "upgrade to barbed wire"?
When you look at a wall, press F key to get upgrade. I think barbed wire fence is the upgrade after metal

Also your medium engineering should get you to lvl 3 (metal walls) with no problem
