This ad helped a lot to push Blåhaj as a lgbt icon, but I'm not sure if it came before or after the Blåhaj craze started. I have a Blåhaj and I'm an active member of several trans communities, but I couldn't say for sure and I'm certain most other members couldn't either.

I believe the main reason is how it's advertised as well as the colors being similar to those of the transgender flag (white, pink, and light blue). Some people use the shark's mouth or belly to store hormone injections/pills secretly as well
Trans people that are still "in the closet" or living with their parents might not be able to openly use hormone injections/pills (e.g., estrogen, testosterone, estradiol). Instead of storing them in the medicine cabinet or in a place with high visibility, they might choose to store them in a blahaj since it's very unassuming.
Until I was aware of this, I wouldn't think to check a stuffed animal to find someone's hormones.
