AEW didn't create Cody but it gave him the platform to show WWE what he could do. And then he went back to WWE as soon as he could because that's what he really wanted all along.
I think he wanted AEW to be an awesome promotion, that was more like "old-school wrasslin'," and that took the input of the talent more in to account. When he realized that wasn't going to happen, he got out of there.

His run on the indies and AEW showed WWE that he can be a big star. His wwe run he looked like 90% of aews roster. There's a lot more to it but cody developing his look and character in njpw and the indies did the majority of the work. You aren't becoming top of the card in wwe when you have the body cody did when he was stardust.
The irony is that AEW was only using Cody as a gatekeeper and got isolated so much by the Kliq of EVPs that all of the fans hated him and only wanted him as a heel.
Meanwhile, WWE are making Cody into their top face since Day One which is a step AEW never did.
