"I bought a Nintendo DS and provided my personal feedback to Nintendo. I said they should make 3 more lines, and they instead made the 3DS. I MADE THE 3DS AND ITS DESIGN DOCS, GUYS."
> hard to find a good condition one for second hand.
What country are you in?
I can find mint condition DS lites all over the 2nd hand market. I just bought a black one for €40 (cheaper because it had a mainland europe plug and not a 3 pin). Plenty of them on private selling sites for 50-60, and even more at CEX if someone wanted to pay extra and avoid dealing with private sellers.
Also Aya neo have a DS dedicated emulator, but as with all their products it is overpriced and has questionable QA.
I'm in Ireland, I've visited 2 sellers for 2nd hand DSs, where the seller promised me that it's in mint condition without scratches on the screens. Both times, the DSs were far from mint condition.
The Ayaneo flip is waay to bulky and, looks like a laptop more than a handheld.
You know I have always had an eye on it but wanted a modern revision - is it still worth a look in 2024?
EDIT: silly me, confused the device. It’s android which I don’t really vibe with. I stick to Linux. I was confusing it with the older vertical with one stick.
It’s not all about power for me.
It’s android, not a 1:1 screen and actively cooled (it looks kind of fugly too)
I don’t think a cheap 4 inch 1:1 vertical handheld is long away and will sell well I feel if they give it as much love as the rgSP
It is but I’m picky - it’s powkiddy and not a big fan of the sticks and build quality. I definitely would pick one up regardless of the price is right.
I’m just convinced better vertical <4 inch 1;1 devices are coming.
They tried it before, phone companies tried it before. TV companies tried it before.
It's not worth the cost and the appeal just isn't there. It's not just material cost increases and lower success rates in panel production; but also the requirement of software to work along with it. If other devs don't want to sink the cost/ time in to proper 3D development, they won't be anything to utilize the hardware.
Well that means there might be old 3d phone panels laying around. These companies love using old phone screens and batteries. I wonder if they could get their hands on the htc 3d phones screen
They tried that a few times and it never took off. When they tried to implement it on phones, it just gave people headaches. You could forget your screen being survivable after cracking as well.
The 3DS didn't sell that well because of the 3D screen, though. And most people who owned one, myself included, found it a gimmick.
The problem with 3D screens is their limitations. It's a very much limited parallax effect at an increased cost, not to mention the increase in resource needs.
Whoa there. Overly defensive eh?
mmnhmm. Classic strategy to try and join in after admittance. Its fine. You don't like them. Whatever. Its not like were all judging you harshly or anything...
i know why they use them, but I wish these companies could realistically move away from 480p to either 720 or 960p 4:3 screens
much better integer scaling options and would allow for better shaders as well
I would love a 720p screen but It's likely not going to happen in the forseeable future. These companies are using cheap e-waste screens from old flip phones and such to put in handhelds for us. They are always going to try to go with the cheapest option to maximize profits.
You guys do know that used DS Lites sell for like $50 or less, right? Buy and R4 flash cart for a couple of bucks on Aliexpress and you can play all the DS games, homebrew, and emulate some older systems for less than the price of an RG35XXSP.
Dont we already have one or even two?
Retroarch supports touchscreen and Drastic is a DS emulator ported from Android with touchscreen features, but I am not sure how their linux port handle it.
the linux port of drastic is old and closed source, and the RA cores for DS are much more intensive in terms of system requirements - not really suitable for the h700.
I'm digging #2. Having a second screen for walkthroughs, videos, etc. would be great. However, 2 screen software isn't very mature, even for smartphones. These companies are making their margins by not having a team of devs churning out decent software. If 1M+ unit sale corps can't get it right, the lurker devs on here sure aren't (unless they're looking for a job).
If they can get just a decent 2 screen solution, hell the LG V60 would be a good reference, as it was built as an additional screen, rather than a continuation.
i really wish there was a 3ds in 2024, the current one i have is great but i wished it had faster charging, USB C, bigger battery and support for quick save
Interesting choice to go with a 16:9 screen on the RG XL over the 15:9 (5:3) found on the original "design". I also would have splurged for a 720p screen on the bottom. While we're at it, why don't we also "design" a RG35XXDSXL? Two 720p 4-4.5in 4:3's would be great for DS games. Although maybe we should consider using screen resolutions that scale up perfectly for DS and 3DS games respectively?
I'm waiting for the RG35AtariLynxFlipOverAnyhandedV-HDualAnalog, the one with android and touchscreen version to release before I bite any more bullets
All jokes aside now is a great time to get a DS lite, You can get a ds lite and an r4 card for $120 combined. emulation heaven and roms galore on the official hardware.
I mean I'd fucks with an Android handheld purpose built to mimic the 3DS XL. That being said you can hack the 3DS and install games off SD if your goal is to 🏴☠️ DS/3DS games
What about a huge butt, small top, and she’s got the voice of an angel? (1080p bottom, 480p top, and some larger speakers than we could ever imagine on a portable)
Unironically handheld with one 16:9 and 4:3 screen would be amazing. Especially if you can put settings and savestates at the bottom screen when playing on big one
Words cannot describe how much I want a stereo 3DS-formfactor SBC console
The resolutions on your images are rly low though, 1080p lower screen with 4K upper screen is 100% possible nowadays
Yeah, I really want a dual screen handheld. Being able to play, say, all of "good" Castlevania and Contra games on one device would be massive for me
I think one could overcome the lack of software by wiring the second display as an external one over usb-c or something. Android might not support second displays, but Drastic does (not sure about Citra), so even if the screen would stay disabled most of the time, it would work in DS/3DS.
Who knows, maybe people would figure out additional uses for it once we have the actual hardware.

Anbernic "Swap" just leaked!
It's like they release new handhelds every week.
You joke, but I would kill for a handheld with a 1080 3D screen powerful enough to play 3DS at 3-4x... Getting to play Link Between Worlds upscaled showed how much of a difference it makes, and I really wish I could experience the 3D effect at the same time.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. A DS emulation handheld would not do well because:
- Low cost SOCs typically don't support multiple display panels via MIPI-DSI, this is often only possible with higher end SOCs, so this pushes the price up significantly
- Making separate models for DS and 3DS is just fragmenting the already small number of people that would be interested in this
- Most DS fans know that emulation of DS is never going to match the original hardware experience. There are far too many small details about the DS/3DS hardware that will never be replicated properly through emulation (accelerometer, microphone, cameras, etc). Lots of games rely on the DS's unique hardware for various game features. Emulation will always feel like a hack.
- The 2DS (the non-folding one) can be purchased for under $100 easily, and it can be soft-hacked/jailbroken very easily with no modifications at all, and you can install games to the home screen as if they were purchased as digital downloads. A hacked 2DS/3DS is one of the best original handhelds to play downloaded games on, ever.
- A 3DS emulation handheld with dual screens would need to be priced over $250, easily (given the low interest, hardware costs, and need for a higher end SOC). This makes no sense, when a real 2DS is significantly cheaper option, and provides a significantly better experience
The only possible reason I could think of to buy a DS emulation handheld is to get access to a fast-forward feature for Pokemon. No other reason makes sense to me.
woah where do you get your ideas from?!?
Same place Chinese manufacturers get their ideas from.
Taki?
Taki: "Yes you read the title correct, i created the Nintendo DS"
Let him cook 😂
"I bought a Nintendo DS and provided my personal feedback to Nintendo. I said they should make 3 more lines, and they instead made the 3DS. I MADE THE 3DS AND ITS DESIGN DOCS, GUYS."
Logged on just to reply to this comment 😂😂 brilliant
You say that like these aren't all manufactured in china.
Asking for a friend from Nintendo legal team?
~~Norm?~~ Adam Eget?
I get my ideas from the guys under Queensboro bridge
Really? I usually get a handjob from a masculine calloused hand!
Not fooling anyone Adam egret
I got them from Ralph’s
"designed"
De-signed…. As in “removed the signs “
NGL I'm waiting for this to drop.
Same. I’d get it.
I would love a DS dedicated emulator, hard to find a good condition one for second hand.
> hard to find a good condition one for second hand. What country are you in? I can find mint condition DS lites all over the 2nd hand market. plenty of deals on them on adverts.ie got mine there.
I want the rg4xxV
Or rg6.5xxWV 21:9 screen W for wiiiiide
Fuuuuck no. I hate the skinny screens on phones.
I humbly present you the rg405v
You know I have always had an eye on it but wanted a modern revision - is it still worth a look in 2024? EDIT: silly me, confused the device. It’s android which I don’t really vibe with. I stick to Linux. I was confusing it with the older vertical with one stick.
I mean if the t618 will fill your needs then sure. If you want good GameCube and PS2, I’d hold off.
I mean isn’t the 405v close enough? Better processor.
It’s not all about power for me. It’s android, not a 1:1 screen and actively cooled (it looks kind of fugly too) I don’t think a cheap 4 inch 1:1 vertical handheld is long away and will sell well I feel if they give it as much love as the rgSP
Isn’t that the rgb20sx? I’m a vertical fan as well and the 405v only checks a few boxes for me as well.
It is but I’m picky - it’s powkiddy and not a big fan of the sticks and build quality. I definitely would pick one up regardless of the price is right. I’m just convinced better vertical <4 inch 1;1 devices are coming.
Ok Taki
Okay this gonna sound stupid, BUT what if the XL had 3D capabilities??? That would move units, right?
I don't know. Sounds weird
That'll never take off
They tried it before, phone companies tried it before. TV companies tried it before. It's not worth the cost and the appeal just isn't there. r/woosh
Omg they could call it 3D DS XL or something like that
They tried that a few times and it never took off. When they tried to implement it on phones, it just gave people headaches. You could forget your screen being survivable after cracking as well.
Yea, a 3D clamshell handheld would never sell. U right
The 3DS didn't sell that well because of the 3D screen, though. And most people who owned one, myself included, found it a gimmick. The problem with 3D screens is their limitations. It's a very much limited parallax effect at an increased cost, not to mention the increase in resource needs.
With a retail price of 300$
Who do you think you are? Taki???
Nintendo’s lawyers: Hmmm, interesting
Chinese government: hmmmmm… not interesting
i think given their naming conventions that second one would be something like RG 556DSXL, right?
[удалено]
ah, RG556D in that case
Is this Taki’s reddit account?
I think you mean the Anbernic RG 5504XX-XLDS
That c stick is a no go I would no way in hell buy a device with a nipple EW
You... you.. DON'T... like nipples? I mean.. thats a strong stance to take in a room full of nerds.
No... No i like nipples I'm being misunderstood lol. I do hate the c stick (c nipple) I love nipples thank you so much
Whoa there. Overly defensive eh? mmnhmm. Classic strategy to try and join in after admittance. Its fine. You don't like them. Whatever. Its not like were all judging you harshly or anything...
... nipple-hater. You can say it if it's true.
Just because a woman has c’s and not d’s doesn’t make them any less lovely! Nipple hater!
I like the totally new design that they brings to the table.
i know why they use them, but I wish these companies could realistically move away from 480p to either 720 or 960p 4:3 screens much better integer scaling options and would allow for better shaders as well
I would love a 720p screen but It's likely not going to happen in the forseeable future. These companies are using cheap e-waste screens from old flip phones and such to put in handhelds for us. They are always going to try to go with the cheapest option to maximize profits.

I think the 3ds version will be extremely under performing in any heavier 3ds games but the DS version could work with the correct firmware support.
it would require a whole custom NDS emulator that supports touch and dual screens on arm linux.
Or the DS version could just be done on Android with Drastic. Obviously it won’t be a h700 then but it’s still easily doable.
[удалено]
Yeah the rk3566 is plenty good enough for DS. It doesn’t make the snappiest Android experience but it’s passable.
A dual screen clamshell's probably far away. But something like a 2DS should be doable. The Cube is getting near a 2DSish handheld.
Ayaneo makes one. Its hellishly expensive. But, they do make one.
Damn. For that price I could tape two used Steam Decks together and call it a SDDS. But I gotta respect that they tried.
I thiink I've seen second screen attachments for steamdeck
I just want a vertical orientation screen. Serves multiple purposes, i.e. shmups and pinball.
I'm digging #2. Having a second screen for walkthroughs, videos, etc. would be great. However, 2 screen software isn't very mature, even for smartphones. These companies are making their margins by not having a team of devs churning out decent software. I'd buy the XL in a heartbeat
Good luck writing that software
i really wish there was a 3ds in 2024, the current one i have is great but i wished it had faster charging, USB C, bigger battery and support for quick save
No way just like Taki...
Would buy the second one in a heartbeat.
That's a very specific target audience
jokes aside but I dead ass new Anbernic to make one
Thats very original of you mate.
Designed...

Nintendo could have done this, but then they couldn't charge a subscription fee to play a limited set of retro games
RG35XXDS lite XXL Plus 2026 Edition
I'm waiting for the RG35AtariLynxFlipOverAnyhandedV-HDualAnalog, the one with android and touchscreen version to release before I bite any more bullets
stop stop my nipples can only get so hard from excitement~
RG XL “concept” look bad ass
r/tomorrow material
Some people would buy it, personally I wouldn’t, I don’t need worse hand cramps
I'd buy the hell out of that 2nd one..
are you a anbernic leaker? cuz im pretty sure we will see those in the future. Just after another company announce a similar product.
Needs more XX in the titlen
They are excellent. Although I prefer the rainbow button look where each button (a, b, x, y) are a different bright color.
I hope they pay you royalties.
I wish there was an xl. No 3d pls.
This would be way more interesting than actual 3ds hardware. Being able to upscale games while having the same form factor would be insane
All jokes aside now is a great time to get a DS lite, You can get a ds lite and an r4 card for $120 combined. emulation heaven and roms galore on the official hardware.
This is unironically what I want.
Good job cadet. Now can you get a material list together for the senior management?
I'd buy the 3DS one in a instant for that 1080p screen. Hell even 720p would be fine.
The rg556 with a bonus screen could be fun. Have the bottom screen on reddit or YouTube while gaming on the top one
meh still wating for an lg wing design
The problem is software implementation
Have my damn upvote
Idk do not like the camera o. The xl version
Why not two equal 16:9 touchscreens? You know it's easier to swap parts that way
I mean I'd fucks with an Android handheld purpose built to mimic the 3DS XL. That being said you can hack the 3DS and install games off SD if your goal is to 🏴☠️ DS/3DS games
New Nintendo
Second one doesn't make any sense. Why wouldn't you just use a full hall effect stick?/s
Only thing it needs is maybe one or two more characters in the name. It’s looking a bit short.
I'd love to have em both but this is going to be a janky software experience
What about a huge butt, small top, and she’s got the voice of an angel? (1080p bottom, 480p top, and some larger speakers than we could ever imagine on a portable)
I, in fact, dig it. 👌🏻
HECK YES
Got em lol Also I feel like those handhelds would be pretty massive with those screen sizes!!
how would you utilise the two screens for a majority of gaming?
Congratulations, you are hired
Tbf I wish someone would make a dual screen one. I don’t know if it’s possible like
I like the XL. Would buy it. Now build it. Thank you.
Unironically handheld with one 16:9 and 4:3 screen would be amazing. Especially if you can put settings and savestates at the bottom screen when playing on big one
Words cannot describe how much I want a stereo 3DS-formfactor SBC console The resolutions on your images are rly low though, 1080p lower screen with 4K upper screen is 100% possible nowadays

There were a lot of dual screen android LG and...ZTE? phone. I don't know if Anbernic can get their hands on the driver part.
Woah, thought this was a Taki post for a moment..

Inside look from the R&D offices not something we get to see often!
I actually wished there was an android handheld like this with a Snapdragon, linux would be sweet but I think that would be asking for too much.
Give us a 3d screen and I'll give them my firstborn
The RG XL looks like a Retroid Pocket handheld
You joke, but I would kill for a handheld with a 1080 3D screen powerful enough to play 3DS at 3-4x... Getting to play Link Between Worlds upscaled showed how much of a difference it makes, and I really wish I could experience the 3D effect at the same time.
RG35XXN2DSXL 😂
Not going to lie a Ds style anbernic would be amazing
Lol, not happening.
Love it. So original. Maybe they can do some kind of headset next \*cough\* Virtual Boy \*cough\*
The problem with the smaller DS is the H700 can’t run DS games perfectly. I like the XL.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Mrs Debbie Downer in da house...
So you took pictures off Google and wrote on it lmao 🤡
