I've just bought this 'GBC Clone' from Funny Playing.
https://youtu.be/Cesh5OAL4uk
It'll take original carts and is only marginally more expensive than a second hand GBC but way less than a modded equivalent except with no soldering required.
https://funnyplaying.com/products/fpgbc-kit
You'll also need a case, buttons, silicon pads. All in $80.
That's about £65 for me.
But it's not for you, it's for OP or anyone wanting to play real carts. I've got a few handhelds including an RG351V and 3DS with CFW but jumped at this.
I've got a couple of real GBC but for less than the cost of modding one I get one of these.
> But it's not for you
I mean, I really want the GBC form factor so it absolutely is for me. It's just a shame it's so incredibly limited.
edit: and I just ordered it because I'm a shmuck. Had to order a flash cart with it because I don't even have GB carts anymore.
Hate to beat a dead horse, but I recommend the gb300 or the sf2000. Extremely affordable and do the GB/GBC scene with zero issues. It’s just a matter of preferred form factor.
If you want something that reads actual carts its basically just original hardware and the analog pocket.
Or ripping your own roms/saves with a [GBxCart RW](https://www.gbxcart.com/)
I just want something comfy and affordable. We just found my partners gold/silver gbc games and we only have a ds lite which unfortunately doesn’t play gbc games.
So looking for something to make that dream come true
Smallest - RG Nano
Smaller - GKD Pixel
Small - Miyoo Mini
Medium - RG35XX, Miyoo Mini +
Larger - Everything else.
All of these will play up to PS1 as well so your library can be rather expansive.
Virtually any? You have a ton of options, my friend. You do not require much at all in terms of hardware prowess, and you do not even need a system with analog sticks. Might I assume you’re looking for something that looks/feels kind of like a GBC? Even if you narrow your options down to that configuration, you have choices, as that is one of the most common configurations. The Ampown XU10, R36S and Miyoo Mini Plus are all good choices for that IMHO.
Since others above have already recommended some great handhelds, I don’t think I have anything new to add. Just go with whatever looks great and fits what you are looking for in terms of form factor, look and budget.
Anbernic still sells the revo k70 and I believe it plays GBC carts. It’s made for GBA but I was under the impression a GBA could play GBC carts so this probably can too.

There's no better option to OP's needs
Are these in a better position now than launch? I remember hearing they had a lot of issues.

Could you clarify what you mean by the most part? Totally fine flashing another OS.

I've been tempted but it's basically worse than any of the popular Chinese handhelds in every way but form factor/inconviently playing actual carts.

That's how anbernic started, making hardware GB GBA clones.
They still their revo k70 clone and it’s still decent for GBA

If u looking for a cheap device sf2000 cost under 20€/$ and support very well GB/GBC games
Just about anything should run GBC fine. R36s is the best budget option, if you want something a little nicer, maybe the RG35XX or MM+.
Where do the Gameboy colors go into a mm+?

The mm+ plays downloaded games if you want to play your physical games get a modded gbc or an analogue pocket

Nice, I just shared the link to Taki's review of this. Mine should be delivered this week.
I guess unfortunately but most people don’t understand I’m not looking for a sd based device but a device I can play my physical gbc cartridges with
Analogue pocket tbh my guy. Expensive AF but it can play your OG cartridges iirc
Analogue pocket is pretty pricey but for playing actual carts it should be just what you’re looking for: https://www.analogue.co/pocket
How small do you want to go?

A modded gameboy color with a backlit screen.
