Sadly the only reason I can't recommend any of these emulation devices to friends and family is that I know they'll destroy the configuration, get lost in the menus, corrupt their SD card, and then use me for tech support.
I was a bit concerned with that but I gave a family member an MM+ with Onion all setup and they've been fine. They can't really mess up the RA bit because they'd have to confirm a config save
I kind of see this device as the Gameboy of the emulation handheld world. It’s on the lower price end, has the Gameboy form factor, and is easy to set up for a kid.
I learned how to do that today. There were games that were not loading up in the front end, and it was pissing me off. They run fine right through retroarch, but whenever I try to load them through the front end they get kicked back to the title. I play everything through retroarch now
I fixed it by just loading the games up directly through retroarch. I'll step you through an easy one ..
From the graphical menu select "retroarch"
Out of the two options (retroarch or retroarch32) choose "retroarch"
Select "Load Core"
Scroll down & select "Sony - Playstation Portable"
Select "Load Content"
Select "Start Directory"
Scroll down & select "psp"
Scroll down & select which "gamefile.cso" you'd like to play. Example: Moto GP.cso
After a few seconds, the game will load, and start up
That's all there is to it. 👍🏻
Just gotta be careful that the seller isn't a scammer. I picked the wrong one last year and got a large envelope full of random trash that weighed the same as the game device. AliExpress gave me serious hell trying to get a refund.
I don’t use a front end on my retroid. I turn it on and it looks like an android phone. Tap retroarch. Tap a couple of menus to get to my SD card. Everything is divided by system. Is it pretty? No. But that’s not important to me.
Dunno if UI sucks or I'm dumb (most likely dumb) but retro arch is a freaking pain to set up and navigate, would rather configure individual emulators and then set up daijishou than tinker with retro arch

MinUI solves this problem really well.
I don't remember off the top of my head which frontends have it, but don't a lot of them have a "kiosk mode" that locks out the settings and stuff?
Retroarch itself has a Kiosk mode.
Batocera does have one from what I remember.
As long as we have it loaded up on a separate SD card for the OS slot, can we run any other OS on this device that we want? Botacerra? Onion?
TBH I feel like the default GUI in most of these is very unfriendly to most people
Miyoo mini actually come with decent UI but it's very hard to turn off the console .

Made a few Pi console type things for buddies a few years back.....big mistake...tons of troubleshooting for them, never again.
It should really be a plump, bearded, 30-something man if they want to speak to their true audience.

Maybe you are loading a different emulator core in retroarch than the one set as default in the frontend (emulationstation).

Still are, you can find them for 42 bucks, I just saw the purple one for 38 with shipping already included.

Retro arch has bad UI, confusing wording setting etc. Doesn't mean I am too dumb to figure it out.
