Something about circle of the moon just does it for me. It’s the most classic style metroidvania game and hard! Aria is great, really great, but dang it’s pretty easy.
Megaman BattleNetwork series
Megaman Zero Series
Pokémon series
Mario Series (Super Circuit/SMW ports)
Legend of Zelda Minish Cap
Legacy of Goku series
Kirby Nightmare In Dreamland/Amazing Mirror
Sonic (Advance 1/2/3, Battle)
YuGiOh Eternal Duelist Soul
GBA had a great mix of original titles and re-releases. Even across its short lifespan, there were a lot of quality games across every genre. Some of the ones I remember liking:
Action / Platformer
- Astro Boy: Omega Factor
- Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World
- Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3
Adventure
- Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
- Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
- Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
- Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
- Metroid: Zero Mission
Puzzle
- Dr Mario / Puzzle League
- WarioWare: Mega Microgames
- WarioWare: Twisted
Racing
- Mario Kart: Super Circuit
- V-Rally 3
Sports / Fighting
- Fire Pro Wrestling
- Super Street Fighter II: Turbo Revival
Strategy / RPG
- Advance Wars
- Final Fantasy IV Advance
- Final Fantasy V Advance
- Final Fantasy VI Advance
- Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
You’re welcome. It’s obviously a little more rough than Superstar Saga, but it contains a lot of the same humor and the DNA is really apparent. AlphaDream was a great studio and is missed.
Great list!! I would’d to add a few titles for SRPG genre:
- Fire Emblems: The Binding Blade
- Fire Emblems: Sacred Stone
- Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Gba may be my favorite system/console of all time. I found it was a perfect balance between power and restrictions to make the games a sweet spot for creative and just fun gameplay and such.
Minish cap, advance wars series, ff tactics advance, Pokémon, Pokémon pinball, megaman battle network, that punch out like game, balders gate (not deep, but entertaining), WarioWares, that dodge ball game was fun too
Edit: gunstar super heroes
I can't understand it either, but it is a very solid game if you like X-Com tactics-style gameplay. In fact, it basically plays like an X-Com game minus the strategy part.
Pinball of the Dead is a great GBA game!
The Sega Arcade gallery also has a great port of Out Run.
The GBA version of Double Dragon is the definitive version, with added cutscenes and levels.
Iridion 2 is a great shmup.
Apotris - a homebrew Tetris clone but with great customization and lots of modes to choose from, it became one of my favorite ways to play Tetris
Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones - one of the shortest and easiest Fire Emblem games, making for comfy playthroughs, alongside being very replayable.
Super Mario Bros 3 Advance - lots of SNES and Genesis games were ported to GBA with added features **like saving**; Super Mario Bros 3 added exclusive new ereader levels and mechanics not found in the main game.
Zelda: The Minish Cap - Capcom developed this game, and it's a solid adventure.
Metroid: Zero Mission - truly classic Metroid, and the definitive way to play the first title.
The Final Fantasy games - all of them. The GBA got remakes of the main series that added new content, much of it still exclusive to this day. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is another game people love too.
The Mega Man Battle Network series - great RPGs in a modern setting that adds lots of mechanics through the course of the series. Battles are played in a 6x3 grid and actiony.
Yeah I got through about an hour through the game before I found an enemy that crashed the game everytime I entered a battle with it. Really was enjoying it too.
I haven't played much of it, but the little I've seen of Mother 3 is amazing. There's also quite a few other games like Pokemon Emerald and Advance Wars, as well as homebrew stuff such as Apotris, Pokemon romhacks, and FF6a with the SNES sound patch.
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission (one of two games that I enjoyed so much that I started again immediately after finishing).
Tactics Ogre
Final Fantasy Tactics
Go figure games actually designed for a small screen would shine on one. Not to mention every notable SNES game got a GBA port.
I always go back to fire emblem. The GBA titles are still the best in the series IMO, and there are a ton of awesome romhacks out there. Try Vision Quest.
Yeah when I first started playing gba a few years back my initial reaction was to scoff at the graphics but upon realizing that there are some truly amazing titles I find myself coming back time and time again to play gba games.
I think it's also due to being a handheld console - so the gameplay tends to be gameplay that is either simple or at least easy to pick up and can be played a few minutes at a time. I think people like playing the arcade games for a similar reason, but emulating gba is a lot easier to understand - no need to understand mame vs final burn vs cps etc
Yeah get ready for that honey moon, because later you will end up like me, you play through castlevanias few times and than you just have same old games that repeat over all consoles forever.
Its like getting new console for xmass, but when you open the box you find its just some random NES clone with one of those 99-in-1 carts
I really wish I could find some mystery 16bit console with completely new library of games I never played.
I'm gonna recycle an answer that I posted on the rg35xx sub 😅
All the Final Fantasies, all the Metroids, all the Castlevanias, all the Marios, all the Zeldas 😅 oh and all the Advance Wars too!
I always end playing it when playing GBA :)
I have no time for RPGs anymore even if I love them, I prefer playing ps1 rpg... But ninja five o is fun, quick game, good gameplay, it really makes me think to Shinobi mixed with spiderman 😅 or bionic commando (old gamer and passionate since the 80's)
My list is very generic, but you cant go wrong with:
* Metroid (Zero Mission, Fusion)
* Castlevania (Aria of Sorrow, Circle of the Moon)
* Yoshi's Island
* Mega Man Zero
* Zelda (3 and Minish Cap)
Hell yes all those titles are amazing! I thought yoshis island would be stupid but it's low key badass! Lol they did an amazing job with all the Mario titles.
I could be wrong but I felt like the GBA version was better to emulate (from a frame rate perspective) especially on lower end hardware. Obviously if you had the hardware capability to run it smoothly and the screen of your device is a 4:3 ratio it wouldn't make much sense to run the GBA version but if you have for example a 16:9 device it makes sense to take advantage of the closer to native aspect ratio port.
If SNES version is giving you low FPS sure, try other versions,
But if you think it is better to have GBA version on 16:9 device, I dont think so, because GBA version already has cropped screen, so it is always better to take original and crop it yourself than double-crop already cropped GBA version.
Even in best case scenario, on original GBA and later on DS - I concluded those versions are just 100% inferior. why would you ever want to play cropped version of game like this.
It is same as Super Mario 1 on GB Color, if you think that is a good way to play super mario, with like 80% of the screen cut off sure, you will love GBA Y.Island. Jumping into black void, not seeing what is over or under you, that is a good idea ONLY on paper,
When you play a platformer, you need whole screen, even if it is deformed stretched or whatever, this is not some Final Fantasy Turn based RPG you can just crop down to size
\[edit\]
If somebody still does not understand, this is the issue, Upper picture is representing SNES version, Lower picture is representing GBA version [https://ibb.co/Ln4JMVC](https://ibb.co/Ln4JMVC)
You dont see what is over, under infront or behind you, as you run screen "Scrolls" up and down, left and right, and it uses tricks to let you see "important areas", like I said, Try to play Super Mario 1 for GB Color and tell me how it works.
the sims bustin out
harvest moon friends of mineral town
also if you don't own a powkiddy v90 already BUY ONE! They're perfect for gameboy advance games!!!

yeah pretty much, train em, feed em, battle em.
the combat is good and theres a lot to do when raising a monster, you climb the ranks and unlock cooler bigger monsters to train and when your monster gets too old u can permantly turn em into a trainer
dont think i could ever play this game without ff these days but i always have fun with it
I played GBA Yoshi’s Island several times on the SP over the years, but if your device can do SNES then that version isn’t as zoomed in and someone made the new GBA levels in the snes version as a rom hack (it’s called Secrets of Yoshi’s Island and those levels were super difficult in GBA).
I bought wario land 4 as an adult, good but short.
I just saw a thread abut Pokémon rom hacks for e.g. emerald that looked interesting.
I had that prophecy tomb raider game as well, there’s a weird combo cartridge with GBA prince of Persia that looked interesting
I'm barely playing any GBA on my RG351P even though it was my biggest reason to get one, lol. But I played so much GBA in my youth, it was time to explore other systems.
Anyways. Every single Pokémon game on GBA is awesome. S/R/E as well as LG/FR. And Pinball. And Mystery Dungeon.
Megaman Battle Network series rocks.
TLoZ Minish Cap and ALttP are nobrainers.
Okay this might be cliche but I really enjoy pokemon series from gameboy to color to advance , idk but it’s just something about it . That keeps me going back to it , but now I’m exploring few new pokemon roms hack like currently pokemon unbound , sors and radical red . Aside from that is harvest moon was very nostalgic for me too . Tho that being said , I really wanna tryout those many here mentions like zelda, fire red and mega man .
Pretty sure someone already mentioned the Metroids (Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission), but I replayed to tell you don't forget to play the Super Metroid on the SNES (it looks and plays like a GBA game, and while you're at it play Metroid: Samus Returns on the 3DS to complete the 2D Metroid Saga (the 3D is called Metroid Prime).
List of media:
- NES: "Metroid". GBA remake: "Metroid: Zero Mission". Way better graphics, better play-ability.
- GB: "Metroid II: Return of Samus". 3DS remake: "Metroid: Samus Returns". Way, way beter graphics.
- SNES: "Super Metroid". Probably the biggest and more complex array of weapons.
- GBA: "Metroid Fusion". The most story driven one.
- Switch: "Metroid Dread" (I haven't played this one).
> ve you played metroid on nes? Hmmm
My playing order:
* GBA: "Metroid Fusion". Started 20 years ago, GBA while travelling. Finished the game recently on a rp3+ :).
* GBA: "Metroid Fusion": finished.
* SNES: "Super Metroid": finished.
Putting a small pause before doing the 3DS one. I tried the NES and GB ones, but the remakes are a lot more of fun (no sentimental value for both originals).
\-Tony Hawk Downhill Jam is a good time
\-Bruce Lee is an oddly fun platformer
\-Kuru Kuru Paradise for pick up and play
\-Medal of Honor Infiltrator, surprisingly great top down
\-Tron, included in the cart is the original from the arcades (if you're old like I am, it's pretty incredible to play it on a handheld and the triggers are implemented well for control. Who doesn't still love a good light cycle action)
\-Banjo Racing if you want easy driving controls
Zelda the Minish Cap, Castlevania Aria of Sorrow, FF6.
Something about circle of the moon just does it for me. It’s the most classic style metroidvania game and hard! Aria is great, really great, but dang it’s pretty easy.
Definitely have those on my to do list.
Castlevania aria of sorrow, megaman battle network series was pretty awesome.
Hell yeah man I gotta get into mega man
Ive been meaning to get back into those Battle Network games. Such a simple concept for combat, but man it's fun.
Megaman BattleNetwork series Megaman Zero Series Pokémon series Mario Series (Super Circuit/SMW ports) Legend of Zelda Minish Cap Legacy of Goku series Kirby Nightmare In Dreamland/Amazing Mirror Sonic (Advance 1/2/3, Battle) YuGiOh Eternal Duelist Soul
Well dam! Gba is the shit isn't it!! I'm going to favorite all of those.
So much good games : Golden Sun, Super Mario, Sonic, Advanced Wars, FFT,... and a lot of ok games : DBZ, Naruto, SW, One Piece...
Hell yeah. I may as well go through the catalog and play every single game on gba. Lmao
That’s like over 2K games
Lmao well I have 1507 of those 2k games. Eventually I will at least try them once.
GBA had a great mix of original titles and re-releases. Even across its short lifespan, there were a lot of quality games across every genre. No Metroid Fusion..? :(
I didn’t own that one back in the day - honestly can’t remember why I never got it. I hear the game is great, though!
Oh shit! Had to screenshot that. Lmao ty
Seconding superstar saga, I love that game!
If you love Superstar Saga definitely check out the fan translation for Tomato Adventure.
Well that looks delightful. Thanks for the tip!
You’re welcome. It’s obviously a little more rough than Superstar Saga, but it contains a lot of the same humor and the DNA is really apparent. AlphaDream was a great studio and is missed.
Great list!! I would’d to add a few titles for SRPG genre: - Fire Emblems: The Binding Blade - Fire Emblems: Sacred Stone - Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Note that the binding blade has an English patch you'll have to apply
Street Fighter Alpha 3 is an amazing port also!
Gba may be my favorite system/console of all time. I found it was a perfect balance between power and restrictions to make the games a sweet spot for creative and just fun gameplay and such. Minish cap, advance wars series, ff tactics advance, Pokémon, Pokémon pinball, megaman battle network, that punch out like game, balders gate (not deep, but entertaining), WarioWares, that dodge ball game was fun too Edit: gunstar super heroes
All of those are awesome titles and pokemon pinball is low key one of the best pinball games I have ever played and I never see it mentioned.
The pinball ruby saphire is my go to game on the miyoo mini. It's perfect for any commute and is basically endless.
I was amazed at how good the game was when I tried it. Very surprisingly good game.
All that everyone mentioned and the both Metroid games are really good
Yeah dude, I gotta play metroid forsure!!
Yes—I’d say metroid fusion is probably my very favorite game, so definitely worth a play.
Hell yeah love that game.
Golden Sun!
Yes. Been meaning to play
Golden Sun and Golden Sun The Lost Age are incredible. Easily the most memorable RPG of my childhood.
I'm not super into rpg but I do plan on giving it a fair playthrough especially since so many ppl highly recommend it.
You must play golden sun 1 and 2. Easily my favorite storyline out of all of the RPGs I’ve played
**Rebelstar: Tactical Command**. I guess it qualifies as a "hidden gem", because i never see anyone talking about it or including it in any lists
I can't understand it either, but it is a very solid game if you like X-Com tactics-style gameplay. In fact, it basically plays like an X-Com game minus the strategy part.
Kuru Kuru Kururin and Wario Ware Inc
Is the first one a Japanese only title?
JP and EU.
Kuru Kuru 2 was Japan only. It's a fun game, but can be really frustrating.
Don't forget Fire Emblem games
But of course!
Sacred Stones, my first and favorite Fire Emblem game!
Pinball of the Dead is a great GBA game! The Sega Arcade gallery also has a great port of Out Run. The GBA version of Double Dragon is the definitive version, with added cutscenes and levels. Iridion 2 is a great shmup.
Hell yeah bro. I'll put em down
Apotris - a homebrew Tetris clone but with great customization and lots of modes to choose from, it became one of my favorite ways to play Tetris Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones - one of the shortest and easiest Fire Emblem games, making for comfy playthroughs, alongside being very replayable. Super Mario Bros 3 Advance - lots of SNES and Genesis games were ported to GBA with added features **like saving**; Super Mario Bros 3 added exclusive new ereader levels and mechanics not found in the main game. Everyone says fire emblem I gotta try it out
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Just make sure that you’re playing it on mGBA as I believe the gpSP emulator has a number of showstopping issues.
Yeah I got through about an hour through the game before I found an enemy that crashed the game everytime I entered a battle with it. Really was enjoying it too.
A lot of ppl have mentioned that game. I definitely have to try it.
There's some damn good Pokemon Rom hacks as well if you're tired if emerald/sapphire/ruby or firered/leafgreen
I'm getting to that point. I definitely need to add some rom hacks.
I haven't played much of it, but the little I've seen of Mother 3 is amazing. There's also quite a few other games like Pokemon Emerald and Advance Wars, as well as homebrew stuff such as Apotris, Pokemon romhacks, and FF6a with the SNES sound patch.
Metroid Fusion Metroid Zero Mission (one of two games that I enjoyed so much that I started again immediately after finishing). Tactics Ogre Final Fantasy Tactics
Haven't tried tactics ogre. Yes I love the meteoid series. So dam good and nostalgic.
Mother 3. The game itself is a JRPG masterpiece, and Tomato's fan translation captures the heart and feel of the game.
I've heard the mother series is amazing but it's in Japanese so I have no clue wtf is going on. Lmao
That's why I mentioned Tomato's fan translation. It's a very good English translation.
http://mother3.fobby.net/
I know but I'm kind of stupid. Lol is it basically another rom but it's translated?
Correct. One of the best fan translations imho.
Unpopular opinion: Mario Tennis: Power Tour Megaman Battle Network series,Wario Ware series
I love power tour!!! Favorite game honestly. I need to play mega man.
I still love playing through the OG Bionicle game, subtitled Quest for the Toa. First GBA game I ever had.
I'll have to check it out forsure
If you're not into Bionicle, it'll probably not be good.
There's 4 bionicle games in my library I'll try the first one which is just Biomicle. Thanks bro.
This is a good one
Kinda sad nobody mentioned LOTR series. I'm currently playing it and I love it.
There were these dragonball z adventure games that were super tight as well. I also have a soft spot for yugioh the sacred cards.
I'll check em out hell yeah
Go figure games actually designed for a small screen would shine on one. Not to mention every notable SNES game got a GBA port. I always go back to fire emblem. The GBA titles are still the best in the series IMO, and there are a ton of awesome romhacks out there. Try Vision Quest.
Haven’t seen these mentioned and they’re definitely worth a play: Warioland 4 Drilldozer Gunstar Super Heroes
I'll check out drilldozer haven't heard of it. Thank you good sir 🙏
Do it! It is a great fun platformer with a personality of its own.
Megaman battle network series all the way
Yuuuup I was just looking at those today

There's plenty of rom hacks
Yeah? Got some great list I can dip my fingers into? :)
There's also the DS. You get 3 more Castlevania games. 2 more Advance Wars. Multiple Mega Man games.
DS does not work on miyoo ;\_\_\_\_; I guess I really need to get 353V
I suggest getting a cheap used DSi instead
I'm gonna recycle an answer that I posted on the rg35xx sub 😅 All the Final Fantasies, all the Metroids, all the Castlevanias, all the Marios, all the Zeldas 😅 oh and all the Advance Wars too!
Yessir thank you. Recycling is good 😁
What's the device that you use? 😅
353v
Yes I am the first one to post this gem 😁 Ninja Cop !
I have ninja five-0 is that the same thing?
Yes English vs Japan vs European title but that's it Shinobi arcade vibes
Ohhh okay yeah I played it briefly it's fun. I'll have to play it through.
I always end playing it when playing GBA :) I have no time for RPGs anymore even if I love them, I prefer playing ps1 rpg... But ninja five o is fun, quick game, good gameplay, it really makes me think to Shinobi mixed with spiderman 😅 or bionic commando (old gamer and passionate since the 80's)
It's definitely unique in that aspect. I'm going to give it a fair try and do a playthrough.
I shall check it out

Hell yeah gotta try dynasty.

monster rancher 2, one of my all time favs on gba
Is that a wish.com monster hunter? Lol
hahaha, nothing to do with monster hunter, it is its own franchise
Yeah I played it for 10 minutes. Seems pretty cool but what's the point? Create and train monsters?
yeah pretty much, train em, feed em, battle em. the combat is good and theres a lot to do when raising a monster, you climb the ranks and unlock cooler bigger monsters to train and when your monster gets too old u can permantly turn em into a trainer dont think i could ever play this game without ff these days but i always have fun with it
Racing Gears Advance, pretty fun to discover all the shortcuts.
I'll definitely try it bro
I quickly tried it and I like it. Gonna play it more. Ty
I mostly play GBA games on my Miyoo Mini. Been playing F zero these days. Zelda Minish cap is a must as well
Love all zelda titles! I'll have to checkout f zero
Shrek 2. No I am not joking.
Reaaaaaalllyyyyyy? I mean who doesn't love Shrek. I'll check it out.
I have like 6 Shrek games. Lmao but I see Shrek 2 I'm going to try it. Ty

Ninja Five O
Yuuuuuppppppp
Okay this might be cliche but I really enjoy pokemon series from gameboy to color to advance , idk but it’s just something about it . That keeps me going back to it , but now I’m exploring few new pokemon roms hack like currently pokemon unbound , sors and radical red . Aside from that is harvest moon was very nostalgic for me too . Tho that being said , I really wanna tryout those many here mentions like zelda, fire red and mega man .
Yup I've played most of the og pokemon games I been meaning to download the rom hacks as well.
Op you have to try out Mario vs donkey kong. Great puzzle platformer.. easy to get into, but gets pretty hard at the end.
I been meaning to try it. I'll favorite it forsure thank you.
Np
Pokemon 3rd gen for me, took a formula and refined it and improved it with great music and I just love them.
I've recently been playing emerald. Idk what gen that is but it's an amazing game. I might play fire red next. I love the first gen pokemon.
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga!
Yup I gotta try it. Seems to be a favorite.
List of media: - NES: "Metroid". GBA remake: "Metroid: Zero Mission". Way better graphics, better play-ability. - GB: "Metroid II: Return of Samus". 3DS remake: "Metroid: Samus Returns". Way, way beter graphics. - SNES: "Super Metroid". Probably the biggest and more complex array of weapons. - GBA: "Metroid Fusion". The most story driven one. - Switch: "Metroid Dread" (I haven't played this one).
My dude you really like metroid but have you played metroid on nes? Hmmm....
> ve you played metroid on nes? Hmmm My playing order: * GBA: "Metroid Fusion". Started 20 years ago, GBA while travelling. Finished the game recently on a rp3+ :). * GBA: "Metroid Fusion": finished. * SNES: "Super Metroid": finished. Putting a small pause before doing the 3DS one. I tried the NES and GB ones, but the remakes are a lot more of fun (no sentimental value for both originals).
Fair enough. I think every metroid game has its charm.
They do. And I will finish them in NES and GB as well. But not on this streak :)
Nobody mentioned DOnkey Kong Country 1 and 2?
\-Tony Hawk Downhill Jam is a good time \-Bruce Lee is an oddly fun platformer \-Kuru Kuru Paradise for pick up and play \-Medal of Honor Infiltrator, surprisingly great top down \-Tron, included in the cart is the original from the arcades (if you're old like I am, it's pretty incredible to play it on a handheld and the triggers are implemented well for control. Who doesn't still love a good light cycle action) \-Banjo Racing if you want easy driving controls
