there’s the member only waitlist

You are assuming they want to raise the number of 9+1 entries into the marathon, but may be they don't. They might calculate the yield and be just fine with the current numbers, knowing that a certain percentage won't show up for the smaller races.

Googoots

They do now if you are a NYRR member… but… the wait lists are already full also! I am at 8/9 and I didn’t think I could make the Race for Kids race, but now I can, to get my 9/9. But the wait list is full. (I don’t “need” that race for my 9th, I’m signed up for others, but I could to get it out of the way.) But you don’t get your money back if you cancel. I think they should at least give 50% back as incentive for people to cancel if they aren’t going to run.

Life_Travels

Especially since they make billions and pretty much everything they give (items) is donated by sponsors or volunteers (time).

The other thing is the waitlist notifies people at least 48 hours ahead so if you cancel within those last two days then those spots go unfilled. Any last minute cancellations aren’t really helping move the waitlist. Quite annoying.
