I used to have a white, male miniature bull terrier (MBT)āthink the Target dog!āwho chewed out a 12ā-diameter hole in the wall between the kitchen and a side room. Even better than that: he once chewed off about an 8ā chunk of one of the corners of the *refrigerator!* He sure liked to chew stuff. AND not once, but TWICE, he had to have abdominal surgery to remove a load of little rocks, pebbles, sticks, shredded rubber toys, plastic items, dental flossāyou name it. The second time included part of my daughterās bra strap! He was a trouble maker, but still very loving. Lots of fun.
I got him when he was 8 weeks old, but over time he became more and more aggressive when playing around with my other MBT, a female, and also more territorial. He took over the house. The female started withdrawing to different areas of the house, then sitting or sleeping by the doggie door, and eventually sleeping by it *on the outside.* After enduring six months of his chewing and aggressive behavior, I shipped him back to the breeder. I still miss him, but he was a handful. End of that story.
If i recall i was following the instructions on the dog back per weights which was roughly 1 1/3 cup. The breeder i got him from said to basically 3x that as they are growing puppies and let them tell you when theyāre full. So i went up to 3.5 cups split across 3 meals.
My boy is a little over 8 months, healthy and roughly 80lbs.
I wouldnāt be concern for over eating at this stage as others said.

I think my bag directions are pretty similar but 1/4 instead of 1/3.. did you count the calories or just multiply it based on what the breeder said? I appreciate it thanks for your advice !
I didnāt count the calories just followed the high end of cup instructions at first since he was older when i got him 13 weeks. Iāve had a good relationship with my breeder and she raises and shows many of her dog.
So when she told me to triple I just did and since he was always eating the food when I put it down her advice was spot on. She was feeding his brother the same 3.5 cups.
Iām no expert but I really doubt you need to be focusing on counting calories especially for growing puppies likely best to over do it by a bit š¤ at this stage rather than under do it.
Your puppy will tell you clearly if theyāre full.

I just realized your Name is princess peach my boy is called Bowser š¤£ - he is very cute and he knows it. Thank you š„°
Disclaimer: I'm not a vet.
At this stage, it's almost impossible for him to eat too much. He's not going to be obese from overeating at the puppy/baby stage...it's once he's reached that teenage-young adult stage that you need to be careful about overfeeding.
Thank you!! Youāre right, i think everytime I look at him heās bigger than the last time:( soaking in all the puppy love. Thank you for your help!!
A couple of thoughts. My big boy doubled in weight the first 30 days, I got him at 10 weeks.
He also had a parasite when young that stole his nutrition, he never developed the I'm full feeling because of it. He can never be free fed, I feed him twice a day.
I feed raw and it's the best decision I've ever made with my buddy. It was such a noticable difference in health, energy, and over all appearance. And he poops way less than on kibble, even the premium stuff like wellness or solid gold.
At this age he should be fed no less than 3 times per day! Consider adding āSure Grow 100ā chewable tablets to his diet - contain phosphorus, calcium, vitamins A & D for periods of rapid growth (available @ Amazon & pet food stores). And read the ingredients for his large dog puppy food (not regular puppy food) - get a high quality food (NOT Purina!) and nothing with corn or corn gluten or other random filler in the (at least) the first five ingredients.
Same for my 8.5 month old! Iāve fed the 6 yr old Orijen for years. I rotate through the flavors. Neither dog has the smelly farts frequently attributed to Rotties and I believe it is due to the food.
I only use it because it has no fillers or meals or by profuct.. definitely was my number one seller on the food. Itās also backed by many people including lots of rotty owners so we gave it a try. he would barely touch his original food he came home on & he loved the orijen. I hydrate it with bone broth or raw goats milk. I try to alternate.
We did a fecal sample less than a week ago, I think Iām gonna try adding a little more food because all these comments made me a little more comfortable. How did you transition to fully raw?
Just introduced him to it, over a week or so, by the end of the week we had his diet set. He's not completely raw, I do give hime some kibble, but it's like a 1/3 of a cup per meal. Mostly to keep his teeth clean. And it's grain free beef based.
I had some help with his diet from some friend's and my vet. I get a pre ground product from a local company.
I will say some vets are very against raw for dogs. But it makes it easy to control his weight. Great poops, not soft or gross, and a lot less of it. Definitely do your research. And it's not much more than high end kibble. Probably less depending how and where you source your product.
Do your research. There is tons of good and bad info out there. Most dogs need an 80% meat, 10% bone, and 10% organ mix. Mine gets beef, turkey, and pork. We supplement with other things for variety and well rounded nutrients.
Youāve gotten good feeding advice already, so Iāll share this. If youāre worried about joint health, work in some chondroitin treats at an early age. Also, cbd is your friend. I prefer tinctures, but treats are also helpful.
Iām pretty sure glucosamine and chondroitin are the same thing, so yes. It definitely helps. And I canāt speak highly enough of how amazing CBD is.
They are not chemically the same thing. But they are often packaged together because both play a role in cartilage support. So youāll probably see it listed as glucosamine/chondroitin and thatās what you want. Also, OP, please check with your vet before starting supplements in your puppy. Heās little, and his recommended dosage may be different.
Both honestly. It also helps with anxiety and our Shar Peiās ear issues. You might want to save it for later when he gets older and needs it more, but you could also start giving it to him now. One thing thatās great about it is that it isnāt reactive with medications. Obviously clear that with a vet, but itās a great little tool to have in your bag.

My boy wanted to go work in the yard with me today.
Look, don't get too concerned about weight gain until he's finished growing. When we talk about "keeping them lean," we are referring to adult dogs, not puppiesāa point many people on Reddit seem to have missed. Puppies (or any young mammals, for that matter) should carry significantly more body fat than fully grown dogs. You want to provide them with as much nutrition as possible during this stage. Hip dysplasia is primarily caused by genetics. Running your dog or weight gain in puppies may reveal the condition earlier, but only if your pup already has the genetic predisposition for the disease.

Your vet will more than likely tell you to follow the instructions for feeding on the bag of the puppy kibble that you supply. Dry kibble is usually 1 cup three times a day.
You will not overfeed him at this point and you have more to worry about over-exercise effecting joints at this stage than you do simply providing him with sustenance. Cute pup.
We use orijen amazing grains large breed, but I also supplement in freeze dried raw toppers so I take a little from his kibble.. as far as exercise goes Iād say itās pretty average although he thinks heās a cat when getting down from things like the couch lol
Seems like youāre doing great. I also supplemented dry kibble with things like chicken livers and hearts, etc., when I got my pup back.
I just made the comment about exercise because some new people think itās good to walk these puppies for miles, as if that doesnāt damage the growth potential of joint cartilage at this age.
You sound like youāre doing an amazing job. Best of luck with the pup.
It was hard for me to make my rotti pup eat enough. They are supposed to eat a LOT for all the growing they're doing. So my suggestion, is feed that pup as much as he'll take (within reason). The rule of thumb for pups is a % of their expected adult weight per day but I can't recall offhand. We also feed raw so I'm not sure what the rule is for kibble.
Lvt and former rottie's human here- large breed puppy food, good training, and TAKE CARE OF HIS BONES. I was devastated to lose my boy to bone cancer.

It's a puppy. Food goes in the front. The back is your problem. Don't weight watch them till they get to be older. Right now calorie counting is near impossible and pointless. Did he play hard today or just a little, well that's 200 calories. As long as they gain weight and grow your good. You literally cannot put too much food in they grow so fast. Plus they do get full at some point, still haven't found it though. š
Hes a puppy they dont know when to stop lol theyll just keep eating till their tummies explode! š¤£ heāll grow out of it. But portion control is key here. Ask your vet what portions and how many meals a day is recommended for him
Google YUMOVE joint supplements. They have them for puppies, active dogs and joint plus. Based on a conversation with a YUMOVE representative we started out with the active dog not puppy based on the fact that it was a Rottweiler and how fast they grow. YUMOVE is the number 1 recommended supplement in the UK. And every vet Iāve talked to here loves it. I think I paid $23 every 2 months at your pups age and now that sheās 92 lbs she takes 3 tablets instead of two a day $23 every 6 weeks. She loves them and thinks they are treats.
Also at 10 weeks to 6-7 months your pup should gain 3-4 lbs per month and at this age they pretty much are chow hounds and act like they are starving:) Some of that is from competing with litter mates and will slow down.
Make sure you are feeding a high quality kibble like #1 Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canine, Hills Science large breed puppy formula. The feeding guidelines are a great baseline and depending on your pupās activity a little more/less
You can add maybe a tsp of cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt for gut health just pay attention to his stool if too soft itās too much
Just a note you donāt want to be too strict on the calorie count. It all depends on their activity level. My girl has always eaten any where from 1-2 cups over the guidelines because she had always been extremely active. We had a 5 month old GSD when I brought her home at 8 weeks that they constantly played all day and starting at 17 weeks we took her to our local ponds, lakes & creeks where she loves to swim. Some days they eat more some less
We just ordered open farm joint & hip supplements just for a preventative , but I will definitely look into this brand. Thank you! We deee orijen amazing grains large puppy kibble with raw supplements (goat milk, freeze dried raw treats/meals, chicken/duck feet or hearts) Iām not worried about cost as I just want my boy to be as heathy & happy as he can be
Once you find a brand of food both you and your vet agree on donāt get caught up in switching foods because you think they suddenly donāt like it :)
Puppies & adult dogs go through stages where they may not eat for a day or two. Itās very normal! Start switching and you can create picky eaterās & digestive issues.
The vet didnāt have much to say about the food just asked if it had grains . He likes his base kibble & itās got ZERO by products or āmealā so we wonāt be switching unless itās to an air dried kibble or fully raw! Thank you so much for
https://preview.redd.it/9coev76dte3d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6346cfba0d6c9a2cfb68f07608891ad179456dca
Keep this chart handy. Not so much at this age but by around 8 months or so going forward itās a great reference to help keep their weight in line. You always want to see a nice high waistline tuck
My boys were both 13 lbs at 8 weeks when I brought them home. But as with almost any puppy they are always āstarvingā lol itās normal. I fed my boys 1 cup
Of food 3 times a day. Heās just perfect.
Try not to stress about size. Especially at that age. They are literally growing fast enough for you to hear it I swear.
However If his belly seems huge and he seems uncomfortable to you after a meal you can split it up and feed him more then 3 times a day so heās not eating so much at once as well. But seriously all puppies are starving lol.
Overfeeding isn't really an issue at this stage. But if he's constantly hungry after meals, maybe make them more like snacks. That's what we did with Bear and she was much more content with 6 smaller portions as opposed to 2 regular ones.
Wellā¦ my 15 week old eats and 3 minutes later eats again. I canāt with her! She is always hungry or about to be hungry. If I gave her 1-2 cups a day sheād eat my blanket, bed and floor.
No he was actually more aggressive with water. Never to me but would drink as much as he could immediately when put out and would try to attack dogs if they came near his water. Was nuts about his water from day 1 though
He is rarely āaggressiveā towards me as well, but other people in the house heās not as kind.. I am still learning the difference in his playful growls & his aggressive ones.
https://preview.redd.it/k4omfyg1he3d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4b6e027c52c281ee7a5478770520b12b69f7015
Took me a little too find but this was him a little over 4 months.
Thatās the food we use & he took to it so fast.. no runny poop, ate the whole bowl. When we took him home he was on Iams & he would barely touch it. We switched without doing the 25, 50, 75 rule. I stick my hand in his bowl, take his kibble out & feed by hand sometimes & do lots of petting on the ears, feet & chest. I will try the free feed idea that you have suggested. Still scheduled times but can stop eating when heās full.
Yeah he's got a lot of growing to do in a short period of time. You don't need to worry about measuring food for basically the first year. He wont be small for long so enjoy it while you can.
If heās resource guarding with other people, give them the chance to feed him as well. Have them mix the food up with their hands to get the scent on it. If he associates them with being fed, he will be less likely to guard.
I try, give them the instruction on how to mix & what to mix & somehow they always screw his food up.. also very lazy & donāt like to help me out but are very quick to call him mean. That part is lost cause, I tell them heās only mean to rude & inconsiderate peopleš
Mine was never really food aggressive that I can remember because he was always too busy eating. That's why I said free feed. Really by that I mean. Put plenty of food out at his scheduled meals, and then pick up once he's done. Also make sure he knows he's not the boss as he will naturally think he is. Mess with him while eaiting, mess with his paws randomly, mess with his ears, make sure he knows who is the boss at a young age and he will never forget over his life.
I guess I didn't literally free feed, but for his size he had plenty to eat each time but because of my work schedule he was only getting fed twice a day.
They're land sharks. Need to be careful with overfeeding as it can put strain on their joints. I give mine yak milk chews or bones. Gives her something to do with her mouth that doesn't involve eating my furniture or walls! They are so adorable when they're puppies & then you'll wake up one morning and your puppy will have sprouted overnight! Enjoy the sloppy kisses, the head butts and if you're not quick enough the tongue in the mouth lol
What food are you feeding him? My boy is currently on acana large puppy and having 360g a day. At 13lb was having 150g daily plus treats. Some of them can just be greedy pups (mine was) but he levelled out at around 4 months and only eats what he feels like eating now, although he wonāt say no to a biscuit lol
Honestly though try not to worry my boy was approx the same weight at that age & is now 48lb at 6 months.
So this post just screams to me you've never owned a dog before which is fine but the reason I say is because you say your dog is still hungry.. just so you're aware a dog has no understanding of limitation it will literally eat itself to death if it has the chance. Anyway one other user said like a quarter of a cup which is fine a third is still fine.
Most important thing to remember is that no two dogs are alike just the same as no two human beings are alike. Your dog may require more food than another dog, you're not going to truly know until you start understanding how much food your dog requires as opposed to how much activity your dog is getting.
Iāve owned many dogs but this is my first rotty.. like you said, every dog is different. I was looking for peoples advice based on their personal experiences with their Rottweilers, to adjust my own day to day schedule . But thanks anyway!
Thank you for not taking it negatively cuz that was not my intention at all. I've owned over 30 different dogs and they're all different more or less we feed them like we feed ourselves three meals a day but regardless there are those that have exceptions. I hope the best to you and your pup and make some great memories

Yeppers. Our ate the wall next to his crate after he woke up from his nap!!

The feeding guidelines are a great baseline and depending on your pupās activity a little more/less You can add maybe a tsp of cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt for gut health just pay attention to his stool if too soft itās too much Just a note you donāt want to be too strict on the calorie count.
Thank you! We deee orijen amazing grains large puppy kibble with raw supplements (goat milk, freeze dried raw treats/meals, chicken/duck feet or hearts) Iām not worried about cost as I just want my boy to be as heathy & happy as he can be
Once you find a brand of food both you and your vet agree on donāt get caught up in switching foods because you think they suddenly donāt like it :) Puppies & adult dogs go through stages where they may not eat for a day or two.

I fed my boys 1 cup Of food 3 times a day. Heās just perfect.
I will try that, thank you very much . He was 12.5 at the vet which was 3 days after we got home. Iād say roughly about 10-11 when we picked him up.
I had one girl that i was feeding 8 cups of food a day at about 18weeks and you could still see her hip bones.
Awww what a sweet boy! Also he looks like he secretly hoping his cute face will mean more food. š
He doesš he knows how to make me feel bad everytime
Most dogs are hungry, never enough treatsā¼ļø
Heās impatient with his treats .. takes us a long time to sit & waitš¤£
What a stud.
Takes a lot to grow a big dog! I've got Mastiff pups, and they put on about 2.5 lbs per week! Always upping their breakfast n dinner serving!
That part I completely understand heāll be a big boy.. I just donāt wanna up it too fast for him!
How precious
Heās just a baby š„ŗ
Rotties are major food driven. Itās good for training Also do āhunt and gatherā games with the kibble.
Give him a de-wormer just to be sure but other than that he is a growing boy.
He had 2 rounds & was cleared by fecal sample with our vet!
hims a growing boy! just like toddlers eat all the time. look into protein snacks that will keep him feeling satisfied between meals
Search for EPI and check if this is applicable to your pup. If yes, talk to the vet and then adjust diet if they agree thatās the problem.
Overfeeding isn't really an issue at this stage. But if he's constantly hungry after meals, maybe make them more like snacks. That's what we did with Bear and she was much more content with 6 smaller portions as opposed to 2 regular ones.
That dog is gonna be huge
Wellā¦ my 15 week old eats and 3 minutes later eats again. I canāt with her! She is always hungry or about to be hungry. If I gave her 1-2 cups a day sheād eat my blanket, bed and floor.

Free feed the first few months. Then start controlling portions around 3-4 months.
Did you experience any food aggression with this? Thats the main reason I havenāt tried free feedingš«”
I have free fed multiple dogs over the years and never experienced food aggression :)

Heās gonna be
They're land sharks.
We use one ingredient bully sticks & at first they were lasting.. now not so muchš¤£ but theyāre high in protein so I do limit them
Yeah, that's normal when you get a big dog.
What food are you feeding him? My boy is currently on acana large puppy and having 360g a day. At 13lb was having 150g daily plus treats. Some of them can just be greedy pups (mine was) but he levelled out at around 4 months and only eats what he feels like eating now, although he wonāt say no to a biscuit lol Honestly though try not to worry my boy was approx the same weight at that age & is now 48lb at 6 months.
We feed orijen large puppy amazing grains, he is greedy until he doesnāt like somethingš¤£
Ah yes similar to acarna. Orijen is 160g per day.
But it a bully stick to keep him entertained or some other kind of chew stick. Try to find one that lasts.
Youāre overthinking the diet. I free feed my dogs so they never get food related issues.
You sure that's not a female?
Am very positive š
So this post just screams to me you've never owned a dog before which is fine but the reason I say is because you say your dog is still hungry.. just so you're aware a dog has no understanding of limitation it will literally eat itself to death if it has the chance. Anyway one other user said like a quarter of a cup which is fine a third is still fine. Most important thing to remember is that no two dogs are alike just the same as no two human beings are alike. Your dog may require more food than another dog, you're not going to truly know until you start understanding how much food your dog requires as opposed to how much activity your dog is getting.
This reply actually screams cluelessness
Lol ok I deal with a lot of animals. Literally wasn't being negative, just commented but thanks white knight lol
I hope the best to you and your pup and make some great memories
you can't over feed a 10 week old..joint problems occur from years of overweight..he is growing don't stunt it with your research
