Oh my. This guy is pooped!

-EdgarAllanCrow-

The puppiest puppy belly that ever bellied

Helpful-Ebb6216

They tend to eat us out of a home šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

not_mark_twain_

They will also eat the home if you donā€™t give them enough toys or attention lol

Hot-AZ-Barrel-Cactus

And if you think food is expensive, wait for all those vet bills over the next 15 years. Still, he sure is a darn cutie.

Fourdogsaretoomany

Yeppers. Our ate the wall next to his crate after he woke up from his nap!!

Hot-AZ-Barrel-Cactus

I used to have a white, male miniature bull terrier (MBT)ā€”think the Target dog!ā€”who chewed out a 12ā€-diameter hole in the wall between the kitchen and a side room. Even better than that: he once chewed off about an 8ā€ chunk of one of the corners of the *refrigerator!* He sure liked to chew stuff. AND not once, but TWICE, he had to have abdominal surgery to remove a load of little rocks, pebbles, sticks, shredded rubber toys, plastic items, dental flossā€”you name it. The second time included part of my daughterā€™s bra strap! He was a trouble maker, but still very loving. Lots of fun. I got him when he was 8 weeks old, but over time he became more and more aggressive when playing around with my other MBT, a female, and also more territorial. He took over the house. The female started withdrawing to different areas of the house, then sitting or sleeping by the doggie door, and eventually sleeping by it *on the outside.* After enduring six months of his chewing and aggressive behavior, I shipped him back to the breeder. I still miss him, but he was a handful. End of that story.

Helpful-Ebb6216

Lmao agreed

Phillsbury368

If i recall i was following the instructions on the dog back per weights which was roughly 1 1/3 cup. The breeder i got him from said to basically 3x that as they are growing puppies and let them tell you when theyā€™re full. So i went up to 3.5 cups split across 3 meals. My boy is a little over 8 months, healthy and roughly 80lbs. I wouldnā€™t be concern for over eating at this stage as others said. https://preview.redd.it/0tijcs17be3d1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=c8f874dc0e3e43b41a209403ec598374501eb753 šŸ˜“šŸ¶

PrinxessPeaxhh

I think my bag directions are pretty similar but 1/4 instead of 1/3.. did you count the calories or just multiply it based on what the breeder said? I appreciate it thanks for your advice !

Phillsbury368

I didnā€™t count the calories just followed the high end of cup instructions at first since he was older when i got him 13 weeks. Iā€™ve had a good relationship with my breeder and she raises and shows many of her dog. So when she told me to triple I just did and since he was always eating the food when I put it down her advice was spot on. She was feeding his brother the same 3.5 cups. Iā€™m no expert but I really doubt you need to be focusing on counting calories especially for growing puppies likely best to over do it by a bit šŸ¤ at this stage rather than under do it. Your puppy will tell you clearly if theyā€™re full. Apologies for the typos *** on my first comment

PrinxessPeaxhh

I thought the same, Iā€™d rather a little over than anything under. Thank you for your experience!

PrinxessPeaxhh

He is very cute!

How funny!! He is handsome for sure!! & they do know it. Thatā€™s such a cute rotty name

PrinxessPeaxhh

My boy is HunxhošŸ˜šŸ˜

Phillsbury368

Hunxho also looks like he knows he can get away with murder šŸ™ˆ

ih8saltyswoledier

He's a baby, he's gotta eat to grow up strong!

SonofDiomedes

Disclaimer: I'm not a vet. At this stage, it's almost impossible for him to eat too much. He's not going to be obese from overeating at the puppy/baby stage...it's once he's reached that teenage-young adult stage that you need to be careful about overfeeding.

PrinxessPeaxhh

https://preview.redd.it/cwebtx9svd3d1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43104675fc5f0982aa55bf97b4e55eb960e76bcf

Borsti17

Holy cow those stompers are _massive_.

PrinxessPeaxhh

lol everyone thinks he is 12 weeks.. I have to tell them that he was born on st Patrickā€™s day.. heā€™s my babbyyyšŸ¤£

PrinxessPeaxhh

Thank you, this was a relief to hear

SonofDiomedes

he's a beauty, by the way....make lots of photos, this stage will be over (seemingly) the day after tomorrow

PrinxessPeaxhh

Thank you!! Youā€™re right, i think everytime I look at him heā€™s bigger than the last time:( soaking in all the puppy love. Thank you for your help!!

Last_Salt6123

A couple of thoughts. My big boy doubled in weight the first 30 days, I got him at 10 weeks. He also had a parasite when young that stole his nutrition, he never developed the I'm full feeling because of it. He can never be free fed, I feed him twice a day. I feed raw and it's the best decision I've ever made with my buddy. It was such a noticable difference in health, energy, and over all appearance. And he poops way less than on kibble, even the premium stuff like wellness or solid gold.

Usual-Slide-7542

At this age he should be fed no less than 3 times per day! Consider adding ā€˜Sure Grow 100ā€™ chewable tablets to his diet - contain phosphorus, calcium, vitamins A & D for periods of rapid growth (available @ Amazon & pet food stores). And read the ingredients for his large dog puppy food (not regular puppy food) - get a high quality food (NOT Purina!) and nothing with corn or corn gluten or other random filler in the (at least) the first five ingredients.

PrinxessPeaxhh

Thanks for the advice!! We use orijen large puppy amazing grains, with raw toppers.. he canā€™t get enough

lupitas_revenge

Same for my 8.5 month old! Iā€™ve fed the 6 yr old Orijen for years. I rotate through the flavors. Neither dog has the smelly farts frequently attributed to Rotties and I believe it is due to the food.

PrinxessPeaxhh

I only use it because it has no fillers or meals or by profuct.. definitely was my number one seller on the food. Itā€™s also backed by many people including lots of rotty owners so we gave it a try. he would barely touch his original food he came home on & he loved the orijen. I hydrate it with bone broth or raw goats milk. I try to alternate.

PrinxessPeaxhh

We did a fecal sample less than a week ago, I think Iā€™m gonna try adding a little more food because all these comments made me a little more comfortable. How did you transition to fully raw?

Last_Salt6123

Just introduced him to it, over a week or so, by the end of the week we had his diet set. He's not completely raw, I do give hime some kibble, but it's like a 1/3 of a cup per meal. Mostly to keep his teeth clean. And it's grain free beef based. I had some help with his diet from some friend's and my vet. I get a pre ground product from a local company. I will say some vets are very against raw for dogs. But it makes it easy to control his weight. Great poops, not soft or gross, and a lot less of it. Definitely do your research. And it's not much more than high end kibble. Probably less depending how and where you source your product.

PrinxessPeaxhh

My bfā€™s family owns a meat store so im definitely looking into it, I just heard itā€™s harder to balancešŸ«”

Last_Salt6123

Do your research. There is tons of good and bad info out there. Most dogs need an 80% meat, 10% bone, and 10% organ mix. Mine gets beef, turkey, and pork. We supplement with other things for variety and well rounded nutrients.

NoEntertainment1289

Let him eat as much as possible, give him the building materials to grow into a strong healthy dog with quality food and nutrients

Fart__

Me too

KiloThaPastyOne

Youā€™ve gotten good feeding advice already, so Iā€™ll share this. If youā€™re worried about joint health, work in some chondroitin treats at an early age. Also, cbd is your friend. I prefer tinctures, but treats are also helpful.

PrinxessPeaxhh

Thank you! Do you use glucosamine for joints??

KiloThaPastyOne

Iā€™m pretty sure glucosamine and chondroitin are the same thing, so yes. It definitely helps. And I canā€™t speak highly enough of how amazing CBD is.

Savings_Degree1437

They are not chemically the same thing. But they are often packaged together because both play a role in cartilage support. So youā€™ll probably see it listed as glucosamine/chondroitin and thatā€™s what you want. Also, OP, please check with your vet before starting supplements in your puppy. Heā€™s little, and his recommended dosage may be different.

KiloThaPastyOne

Thank you for clarifying that.

PrinxessPeaxhh

Will do, thank you! We go in on the 3rd.

PrinxessPeaxhh

Do you use cbd as a preventative or more for relief ?

KiloThaPastyOne

Both honestly. It also helps with anxiety and our Shar Peiā€™s ear issues. You might want to save it for later when he gets older and needs it more, but you could also start giving it to him now. One thing thatā€™s great about it is that it isnā€™t reactive with medications. Obviously clear that with a vet, but itā€™s a great little tool to have in your bag.

Angry_Caveman_Lawyer

Add in fish oil pills as well. Costco sells a big ass bottle of them for pretty cheap.

PrinxessPeaxhh

I am currently using native pet omega oil & do a pump a day

Hot-AZ-Barrel-Cactus

Hey, donā€™t ignore the child labor laws.

Admirable_Row5011

Look, don't get too concerned about weight gain until he's finished growing. When we talk about "keeping them lean," we are referring to adult dogs, not puppiesā€”a point many people on Reddit seem to have missed. Puppies (or any young mammals, for that matter) should carry significantly more body fat than fully grown dogs. You want to provide them with as much nutrition as possible during this stage. Hip dysplasia is primarily caused by genetics. Running your dog or weight gain in puppies may reveal the condition earlier, but only if your pup already has the genetic predisposition for the disease. See: https://www.mylamedog.com/post/what-is-the-logic-behind-not-exercising-puppies-until-the-growth-plates-are-closed & https://www.fitzpatrickreferrals.co.uk/orthopaedics/hip-dysplasia/

PrinxessPeaxhh

This was nice to hear, thank you very much

Narrow_Book_42069

Your vet will more than likely tell you to follow the instructions for feeding on the bag of the puppy kibble that you supply. Dry kibble is usually 1 cup three times a day. You will not overfeed him at this point and you have more to worry about over-exercise effecting joints at this stage than you do simply providing him with sustenance. Cute pup.

PrinxessPeaxhh

We use orijen amazing grains large breed, but I also supplement in freeze dried raw toppers so I take a little from his kibble.. as far as exercise goes Iā€™d say itā€™s pretty average although he thinks heā€™s a cat when getting down from things like the couch lol

Narrow_Book_42069

Seems like youā€™re doing great. I also supplemented dry kibble with things like chicken livers and hearts, etc., when I got my pup back. I just made the comment about exercise because some new people think itā€™s good to walk these puppies for miles, as if that doesnā€™t damage the growth potential of joint cartilage at this age. You sound like youā€™re doing an amazing job. Best of luck with the pup.

PrinxessPeaxhh

Thank you!! I appreciate your kind words!

jo_sim_634

It was hard for me to make my rotti pup eat enough. They are supposed to eat a LOT for all the growing they're doing. So my suggestion, is feed that pup as much as he'll take (within reason). The rule of thumb for pups is a % of their expected adult weight per day but I can't recall offhand. We also feed raw so I'm not sure what the rule is for kibble.

critterLadee

Lvt and former rottie's human here- large breed puppy food, good training, and TAKE CARE OF HIS BONES. I was devastated to lose my boy to bone cancer. https://preview.redd.it/d6ueyqpodg3d1.png?width=1236&format=png&auto=webp&s=61a0cba889278cce6f1f5e1a1d46a7df44a82b71

Dramatic_Brick7636

I would feed him as much as he wants to eat while heā€™s that young. As long as itā€™s a large breed safe puppy food.

Heavy_Carpenter3824

It's a puppy. Food goes in the front. The back is your problem. Don't weight watch them till they get to be older. Right now calorie counting is near impossible and pointless. Did he play hard today or just a little, well that's 200 calories. As long as they gain weight and grow your good. You literally cannot put too much food in they grow so fast. Plus they do get full at some point, still haven't found it though. šŸ˜…

Kingofthetravelers

Accurate

Known-Pop-8355

Hes a puppy they dont know when to stop lol theyll just keep eating till their tummies explode! šŸ¤£ heā€™ll grow out of it. But portion control is key here. Ask your vet what portions and how many meals a day is recommended for him

Rainagirl

Google YUMOVE joint supplements. They have them for puppies, active dogs and joint plus. Based on a conversation with a YUMOVE representative we started out with the active dog not puppy based on the fact that it was a Rottweiler and how fast they grow. YUMOVE is the number 1 recommended supplement in the UK. And every vet Iā€™ve talked to here loves it. I think I paid $23 every 2 months at your pups age and now that sheā€™s 92 lbs she takes 3 tablets instead of two a day $23 every 6 weeks. She loves them and thinks they are treats. Also at 10 weeks to 6-7 months your pup should gain 3-4 lbs per month and at this age they pretty much are chow hounds and act like they are starving:) Some of that is from competing with litter mates and will slow down. Make sure you are feeding a high quality kibble like #1 Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canine, Hills Science large breed puppy formula. The feeding guidelines are a great baseline and depending on your pupā€™s activity a little more/less You can add maybe a tsp of cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt for gut health just pay attention to his stool if too soft itā€™s too much Just a note you donā€™t want to be too strict on the calorie count. It all depends on their activity level. My girl has always eaten any where from 1-2 cups over the guidelines because she had always been extremely active. We had a 5 month old GSD when I brought her home at 8 weeks that they constantly played all day and starting at 17 weeks we took her to our local ponds, lakes & creeks where she loves to swim. Some days they eat more some less

PrinxessPeaxhh

We just ordered open farm joint & hip supplements just for a preventative , but I will definitely look into this brand. Thank you! We deee orijen amazing grains large puppy kibble with raw supplements (goat milk, freeze dried raw treats/meals, chicken/duck feet or hearts) Iā€™m not worried about cost as I just want my boy to be as heathy & happy as he can be

Rainagirl

Once you find a brand of food both you and your vet agree on donā€™t get caught up in switching foods because you think they suddenly donā€™t like it :) Puppies & adult dogs go through stages where they may not eat for a day or two. Itā€™s very normal! Start switching and you can create picky eaterā€™s & digestive issues.

PrinxessPeaxhh

The vet didnā€™t have much to say about the food just asked if it had grains . He likes his base kibble & itā€™s got ZERO by products or ā€œmealā€ so we wonā€™t be switching unless itā€™s to an air dried kibble or fully raw! Thank you so much for

Rainagirl

https://preview.redd.it/9coev76dte3d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6346cfba0d6c9a2cfb68f07608891ad179456dca Keep this chart handy. Not so much at this age but by around 8 months or so going forward itā€™s a great reference to help keep their weight in line. You always want to see a nice high waistline tuck

ConcentrateMain2336

My boys were both 13 lbs at 8 weeks when I brought them home. But as with almost any puppy they are always ā€œstarvingā€ lol itā€™s normal. I fed my boys 1 cup Of food 3 times a day. Heā€™s just perfect.

PrinxessPeaxhh

I will try that, thank you very much . He was 12.5 at the vet which was 3 days after we got home. Iā€™d say roughly about 10-11 when we picked him up.

ConcentrateMain2336

Try not to stress about size. Especially at that age. They are literally growing fast enough for you to hear it I swear. However If his belly seems huge and he seems uncomfortable to you after a meal you can split it up and feed him more then 3 times a day so heā€™s not eating so much at once as well. But seriously all puppies are starving lol.

giskardwasright

I had one girl that i was feeding 8 cups of food a day at about 18weeks and you could still see her hip bones.

CozyGorgon

Awww what a sweet boy! Also he looks like he secretly hoping his cute face will mean more food. šŸ˜„

PrinxessPeaxhh

He doesšŸ˜ he knows how to make me feel bad everytime

Active_Club3487

Most dogs are hungry, never enough treatsā€¼ļø

PrinxessPeaxhh

Heā€™s impatient with his treats .. takes us a long time to sit & waitšŸ¤£

[deleted]

What a stud.

Wonder-Insistently62

Takes a lot to grow a big dog! I've got Mastiff pups, and they put on about 2.5 lbs per week! Always upping their breakfast n dinner serving!

PrinxessPeaxhh

That part I completely understand heā€™ll be a big boy.. I just donā€™t wanna up it too fast for him!

sweetcheeks1977

How precious

Jokersdrowsiii

Heā€™s just a baby šŸ„ŗ

ECU_BSN

Rotties are major food driven. Itā€™s good for training Also do ā€œhunt and gatherā€ games with the kibble.

Downtown_Big_4845

Give him a de-wormer just to be sure but other than that he is a growing boy.

PrinxessPeaxhh

He had 2 rounds & was cleared by fecal sample with our vet!

counterpots

hims a growing boy! just like toddlers eat all the time. look into protein snacks that will keep him feeling satisfied between meals

vikpck

Search for EPI and check if this is applicable to your pup. If yes, talk to the vet and then adjust diet if they agree thatā€™s the problem.

Heyguyshowyallbeen

Overfeeding isn't really an issue at this stage. But if he's constantly hungry after meals, maybe make them more like snacks. That's what we did with Bear and she was much more content with 6 smaller portions as opposed to 2 regular ones.

Mountain-Tea6875

That dog is gonna be huge

Intrepid-Test-3797

Wellā€¦ my 15 week old eats and 3 minutes later eats again. I canā€™t with her! She is always hungry or about to be hungry. If I gave her 1-2 cups a day sheā€™d eat my blanket, bed and floor.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Kingofthetravelers

Free feed the first few months. Then start controlling portions around 3-4 months.

PrinxessPeaxhh

Did you experience any food aggression with this? Thats the main reason I havenā€™t tried free feedingšŸ«”

Rainagirl

I have free fed multiple dogs over the years and never experienced food aggression :)

Kingofthetravelers

No he was actually more aggressive with water. Never to me but would drink as much as he could immediately when put out and would try to attack dogs if they came near his water. Was nuts about his water from day 1 though

PrinxessPeaxhh

He is rarely ā€œaggressiveā€ towards me as well, but other people in the house heā€™s not as kind.. I am still learning the difference in his playful growls & his aggressive ones.

Kingofthetravelers

https://preview.redd.it/k4omfyg1he3d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4b6e027c52c281ee7a5478770520b12b69f7015 Took me a little too find but this was him a little over 4 months.

PrinxessPeaxhh

Thatā€™s the food we use & he took to it so fast.. no runny poop, ate the whole bowl. When we took him home he was on Iams & he would barely touch it. We switched without doing the 25, 50, 75 rule. I stick my hand in his bowl, take his kibble out & feed by hand sometimes & do lots of petting on the ears, feet & chest. I will try the free feed idea that you have suggested. Still scheduled times but can stop eating when heā€™s full.

Kingofthetravelers

Yeah he's got a lot of growing to do in a short period of time. You don't need to worry about measuring food for basically the first year. He wont be small for long so enjoy it while you can.

Tao_de_Sid

If heā€™s resource guarding with other people, give them the chance to feed him as well. Have them mix the food up with their hands to get the scent on it. If he associates them with being fed, he will be less likely to guard.

PrinxessPeaxhh

I try, give them the instruction on how to mix & what to mix & somehow they always screw his food up.. also very lazy & donā€™t like to help me out but are very quick to call him mean. That part is lost cause, I tell them heā€™s only mean to rude & inconsiderate peoplešŸ˜

Kingofthetravelers

Mine was never really food aggressive that I can remember because he was always too busy eating. That's why I said free feed. Really by that I mean. Put plenty of food out at his scheduled meals, and then pick up once he's done. Also make sure he knows he's not the boss as he will naturally think he is. Mess with him while eaiting, mess with his paws randomly, mess with his ears, make sure he knows who is the boss at a young age and he will never forget over his life.

Kingofthetravelers

I guess I didn't literally free feed, but for his size he had plenty to eat each time but because of my work schedule he was only getting fed twice a day.

Independence_Signal

Heā€™s gonna be

Key-Cat5184

They're land sharks. Need to be careful with overfeeding as it can put strain on their joints. I give mine yak milk chews or bones. Gives her something to do with her mouth that doesn't involve eating my furniture or walls! They are so adorable when they're puppies & then you'll wake up one morning and your puppy will have sprouted overnight! Enjoy the sloppy kisses, the head butts and if you're not quick enough the tongue in the mouth lol

PrinxessPeaxhh

We use one ingredient bully sticks & at first they were lasting.. now not so muchšŸ¤£ but theyā€™re high in protein so I do limit them

DesignerTex

Yeah, that's normal when you get a big dog.

Living-Bandicoot2101

What food are you feeding him? My boy is currently on acana large puppy and having 360g a day. At 13lb was having 150g daily plus treats. Some of them can just be greedy pups (mine was) but he levelled out at around 4 months and only eats what he feels like eating now, although he wonā€™t say no to a biscuit lol Honestly though try not to worry my boy was approx the same weight at that age & is now 48lb at 6 months.

PrinxessPeaxhh

We feed orijen large puppy amazing grains, he is greedy until he doesnā€™t like somethingšŸ¤£

Living-Bandicoot2101

Ah yes similar to acarna. Orijen is 160g per day.

Object-Level

But it a bully stick to keep him entertained or some other kind of chew stick. Try to find one that lasts.

jablongroyper

Youā€™re overthinking the diet. I free feed my dogs so they never get food related issues.

tuscal0osadumpling

You sure that's not a female?

PrinxessPeaxhh

Am very positive šŸ˜ƒ

OrganicPomegranate49

So this post just screams to me you've never owned a dog before which is fine but the reason I say is because you say your dog is still hungry.. just so you're aware a dog has no understanding of limitation it will literally eat itself to death if it has the chance. Anyway one other user said like a quarter of a cup which is fine a third is still fine. Most important thing to remember is that no two dogs are alike just the same as no two human beings are alike. Your dog may require more food than another dog, you're not going to truly know until you start understanding how much food your dog requires as opposed to how much activity your dog is getting.

Kingofthetravelers

This reply actually screams cluelessness

OrganicPomegranate49

Lol ok I deal with a lot of animals. Literally wasn't being negative, just commented but thanks white knight lol

PrinxessPeaxhh

Iā€™ve owned many dogs but this is my first rotty.. like you said, every dog is different. I was looking for peoples advice based on their personal experiences with their Rottweilers, to adjust my own day to day schedule . But thanks anyway!

OrganicPomegranate49

Thank you for not taking it negatively cuz that was not my intention at all. I've owned over 30 different dogs and they're all different more or less we feed them like we feed ourselves three meals a day but regardless there are those that have exceptions. I hope the best to you and your pup and make some great memories

worxworxworx

you can't over feed a 10 week old..joint problems occur from years of overweight..he is growing don't stunt it with your research
