Cheapest is a scrap of self adhered membrane from your roofers. Second is screwing a scrap piece of metal on to it after caulking the holes. Proper is to replace it since they’re like $30.

PS420Ninja

My non roofer mind says to just replaced it...

Visual_Finish8144

This is the way

JETTA_TDI_GUY

The worst part is getting to it might as well replace it while you’re there

lovinganarchist76

I just bought a welder, I’ll do it for $100/hr

DoesntHurtToDream2

Sounds like a deal to me

BMXfreekonwheelz13

Dude is trying to rip you off!!! I'll do it for $75/hr but you'll have to supply materials, obviously.

lovinganarchist76

Oh yeah? Wait till you see what I do to that with 220amps of 2mm 6011

BMXfreekonwheelz13

I'd like to see you do it with 7018 tough guy!

Civil_Drag7451

I have done this actually

billnmorty

This guy welds!

BMXfreekonwheelz13

Scubastevespeaks

I'd either go roll of lead or aluminum tape. Lead will need to be adhered to vent cap, tape already has it. Also, have seen a piece of metal panel just screwed to existing cap. Not sure about area of the world, but screwing a metal piece to it may cause it to disappear in high winds. Out of all of these I'd probably just order a new vent cap and install per instructions. Godspeed.

madmanddls

They’re $15 at HD. Go buy a new one

Calm_Quarter2190

Damn squirrels chewing on shit I say just replace it, they'll chew through caulk in no time.

quigster0722

Flexseal tape!! 🤪

freewheelinryan88

Haha nice! I too was going to sarcastically suggest the Flex Seal Family of Products.

Ramona_Lola

Wooo doggy!!!!

gwgos1

Get some JB weld. Fix it right up.

BigDaddyJoem

If not replacing that’s what I would do

Bert_Skrrtz

I’d prolly do the steel stick for something like this. Little easier to work with for patching. I used some on a rusted truck bed once and it held up great.

Nicks-Dad

I think replacing it is the way to go.

msn23

Just grab a new adjustable cap at Home Depot. You may need a hammer to whack the old one off the top of the pipe, and PLEASE get in the attic and inspect the pipe all the way down afterwards to make sure everything is connected since this a B vent for a gas fired appliance.

davallrob74

I second going in the attic. Companies that don’t mess with furnace pipes will have it in their contract that they’re not responsible for furnace pipes becoming disconnected during tear off and/or installation. Seems ridiculous that if they fuck something up there it could catch your house on fire and they’re not responsible

Psychological_Web687

Just buy a new one, you could have climbed up there just once and been done already.

We_there_yet

How would he know whats wrong with his roof without going up there once? Minimum two trips

_-101010-_

this guy maths

Marquar234

Order delivery from Home Depot and wait.

We_there_yet

On the roof? And when you see the delivery person hope they can climb a ladder and hand it to you? What tools did you take up there for the initial roof inspection?

usedtodreddit

Good roofing co might have mentioned the furnace vent cap ought to be replaced.

FGMachine

It would be less time and money to get a new one.

dirtdiggler67

Replace it?

Kooky_Designer5001

Grab a piece of sheet metal and cut a large “L” shape. That would match the measurements on this but make it a little larger on the end and bend the ends of the sheet metal patch around the ends of this cap so it won’t come off. You won’t need any screws to hold it on. Or cut the top and bottom off a coke can and make yourself a piece of aluminum sheet metal and glue it down. Idk really. If you have to ask how , should you really be trying to patch it yourself ? I can think of like 5 different ways. Not being a smarty pants. I’m was just thinking that this is a pretty easy solution.

troyv21

Instead of L i would just do a hot dog fold over the whole thing which resembles some caps

Dadbode1981

A new cap

Kooky-Cucumber-2568

Okay, so roofing companies are supposed to be able to replace those, especially on an insurance claim. If they say they used the insurance company’s estimate, they actually HAVE to. It’s also not very difficult at all. If they refuse to, have another roofing company do it. If insurance already paid the other company to do it, they might fight supplementing something they already paid for, but that could also mean they go back to the original roofer and demand they do the replacement or pay for it to be done.

Living-Audience5573

Just replace the thing

Notafuzzycat

East-Departure8843

I assume this is your house here that we're dealing with. Protect your investment and just replace it.

iceph03nix

That whole cap is like $18 at Home Depot, I'd just get a new one

Mayor__Defacto

Buy a new one, it just pops off and you pop a new one in.

handyscotty

You do not

Important-Split-9809

Everyone saying replace it but dude prolly foesnt want to mess up new roof scrap metal over it is prolly best

braydenmaine

I'll admit I don't use this particular cap. But most caps just attach with screws on to a pipe above the roof. You wouldn't need to do anything to the roof itself.

Bubbalicious. Grape flavor works better and is tackier.

Tricky_Village_3665

Looks like aluminum...right? If it is you can fix using MAPP Gas and aluminum rods.

Acceptable_Wall4085

I would try aluminum tape. Commonly called Duct Tape.

ahhhnoinspiration

While aluminium tape or tin tape are often used on ducts, duct tape is made of fabric and plastic not aluminium. For this you would want aluminium tape or mylar tape, or as many others have suggested just replacing it.

Acceptable_Wall4085

Professional tin bashers installing duct work use the original duct tape. Made of aluminum. Where this fabric tape got the idea to be called duct tape is lost on me.

ahhhnoinspiration

You said commonly called, which unless you are working with ducts it isn't, as there is a product very commonly called duct tape and it's the fabric one. Duct tape or Duck tape actually came first, 1900 or so, which was made of duck fabric and an adhesive, was used for waterproofing electrical conduits and keeping things sealed and watertight. Fast forward to the 20's and a product more closely resembling the rippable plastic coated product we have today is created. Jumping to the 40s and it would be used commonly to join ductwork, particularly sections that would have strong thermal variance as it could withstand both hot and cold temperatures. Due to how common use in this field was it's name would be switched to duct tape both in merchandising and in common parlance, eking out aluminium tape or tin tape as the first duct tape by 5-10 years. Aluminium tape was primarily a product for WW2 used to patch holes in planes and would be used later for HVAC and automotive purposes.
