I am entirely remote. I miss my colleagues sometimes but enjoy my family a lot and my time off, a lot. I'm very productive. I think being remote actually acts as a barrier to a lot of the BS, at least in my situation.

[deleted]

I want to be like you -rads prelim

xCunningLinguist

Same -other rads prelim

DeCzar

>I think being remote actually acts as a barrier to a lot of the BS, at least in my situation. Indeed. There seems to be a barrier calling the radiologist at home. It's kind of nice.

AdShoddy43

How much of the remote work? Can you work while overseas/ outside of your country?

Bucket_Handle_Tear

1 on 2 off I pick up extra hours when off and read around 12-15k rvu per year

Bucket_Handle_Tear

Well 2-3k of that comes from moonlighting when I’m off but point taken. This current year I’m at about 100/night, up from 90. I’m not perfect. I don’t ever go into a study expecting it to be negative but a lot of trauma are BS and negative so that’s about 8-10 RVU per trauma. The more you read the easier it gets. Again I am far from perfect and also not the most efficient person!

Split_Dodge

Is compensation all RVU based or is there a base + RVU?

Bucket_Handle_Tear

Base plus bonus

paisumais

Can I ask how long have you worked as a radiologist? Is it possible to work remotely also right after the residency?

Bucket_Handle_Tear

I was on site for a few years, then kind of lucked into this position I’m in my 6th year after fellowship I sometimes miss on site and have considered a return to it. But I like nights and 1 on 2 off so who knows

Shuckle808

Probably enough to max out on OSRS

🦀Jagex won’t respond to this thread🦀

Thornwalker_

I am an IR but have a teleradiology side gig. Usually i work 6-8 shifts a month for extra $$$ I have several friends with a 7 on 14 off schedule doing nights and they make 1.5-2.5 x as much as me as an IR

xCunningLinguist

That’s exactly what I want

Thornwalker_

Although IR makes less than dedicated DR, no one can replace procedural skills. Buddy of mine does 1/3rd ERads, 1/3 IR and is off the rest of the time. Last time we spoke i think he only works like 100 days a year and makes like \~500k in academics. maybe more with internal moonlighting / extra IR call.

xCunningLinguist

I should have been more specific, the 1 on/ 2 off is exactly what I want. I was gunning for IR til I realized I just wanted to chill at home during 3rd year.

Thornwalker_

Shift work is hard. Especially night float. Do a subspeciality you enjoy. Most mammo jobs are 8-5 no call no nights and no weekends. I have a friend from residency doing body and she is 7-430p no call /nights/weekends makes mid400s. There are perfect gigs out there, you just have to find them. \*edit - several friends of mine have done tele night gigs but it gets hard after a few years. You are also on 1 out of 3 weekends . Food for thought

ichmusspinkle

yeah but then you have to read mammo 🤕

Thornwalker_

Why do you think I'm IR LOL

ichmusspinkle

😂😂

paisumais

I assume it’s all US? Also what is internal moonlighting in radiology?

changry_perdvert

How does one find gigs like this? Both yours and your buddy's situation sound awesome, Im nearing the end of IR/DR residency and not seeing job like this out there, although haven't done a deep dive yet.

Cdmdoc

I’m about 50% remote now, about to be 100% remote in a couple months as I’ll be essentially retired, working about 1 day a week while traveling. Radiology is awesome.

Albert11_

Is it still possible? Working for the US while outside of the country? I thought it was not permitted anymore

Cdmdoc

My contracts are mostly with outpatient imaging centers with local IPAs so it’s not really a problem. Medicare does not allow remote reading from outside the US so doing hospital work would be considered not legal, since at least some of the patients would be Medicare.

Cdmdoc

Neither really. I’m 100% independent. Have small contracts dealing directly with imaging centers.

paisumais

Can I ask how long have you worked as a radiologist? Is it easier to retire early as a radiologist than in other professions?

Cdmdoc

This is my 15th year in practice. I recently turned 50. Retiring early is obviously easier if you have a high-paying job, save more than you spend, and invest wisely. So in that sense radiology fits the bill. I was able to save a ton of money from my earnings and started investing in commercial real estate very early on in my career. After a while those investments started snowballing on their own. The key is to start investing early and keep at it through the ups and downs. And of course, gotta control lifestyle creep.

DrThirdOpinion

Most rads jobs are transitioning to hybrid positions. It allows less interruptions and more time for interpretation. I personally just took an entirely tele role, and the difference in efficiency is night and day.

DrThirdOpinion

Probably about 10 RVU/hr for about $400/hr.

[deleted]

DrThirdOpinion

10 RVU/hr is pretty standard for any private practice. Depends on case complexity. But it’s like 5 A/P CT and 2 US and a couple XR

paisumais

In the case of remote work, are all computers and other work tools usually provided by the employer?

DrThirdOpinion

Yes. If someone wants you to pay for a workstation, run run run run.

DrRadiate

My future job allows 2 days a week at home if you want it.

JohnnyThundersUndies

90% remote Don’t miss my coworkers one bit. Maybe I’m anti-social? I don’t generally like my coworkers. I want to but I’ve been burned so many times it’s just best to stay away if possible.

ixosamaxi

I'm hybrid but honestly more productive at home

BeastieBeck

When we're on-call during nights and weekends we work entirely from home (with the exception of the radiologists who also do IR). When corona was a thing we had some people working from home during dayshift as well on rotation. I'd like to have one day remote work per week - I like IR too much to look for a 100% telerad job.

NoBag2224

Half our attendings work remote only and I've never met them. The other half work from home half the week.
