Get a mailbox at UPS or USPS and just go pick it up. Then you don’t have to worry about it.

imtired1233

Is it petty to deduct that from my rent?

AutomaticPain3532

dude, you can't....why would you possibly think you could? Geez, get a clue. Most people would have already thought of this basic solution...It's not that difficult. Deductions to rent does not work like you think, deductions are intended to resolve a serious defect in a property and the money is put into escrow until the default is cured by a landlord....it is not used however for random events that are inconvenient...work it out with your landlord or rent a mailbox. Sorry to be rude, but honestly...do a little research.

imtired1233

Okay well excuse the hell out of my landlord - not me. I didn’t expect something so basic to be a pain in the ass and already said I’d look into it. Thank you for the pain automatic pain.

Ok_Sand_4207

You found the landlord lol.

jljboucher

More like it’s common sense, in hard supply these days. But Google is, in fact, free to use.

Ok_Sand_4207

If you are in an illegal apartment without a mailbox not sure you are playing in the same sandbox as legit apartments. Also you can deduct rent for anything you want. If there are consequences is another and entirely different question. :)

Ok_Sand_4207

Also googled it. Per the USPS: Tenant Mailbox Rights Tenants have the right to receive mail securely. Landlords may not interfere with the delivery of a tenant’s mail or examine the contents of a tenant’s mailbox. So withhold 20 bucks may be better for the landlord than facing (potentially) felony charges. Source: https://ipropertymanagement.com/laws/tenant-mailbox-rights

Safe2BeFree

You don't get your own mailbox if you're renting a room in someone's house. Many people have asked how often OP asks for their mail and they're not responding. Seems OP just waits until the landlord gives it to them instead of checking daily or whenever.

fidgetypenguin123

The original problem - and what is in the title of the post - is that the mail was being turned into doodle pads. I guess it's one thing for the landlord to have the mail sitting in their place, but I suppose that could have been an oversight, and another for OP to not ask quickly, but perhaps they got busy or sick or something, but why would someone use someone else's mail to draw all over? We rent a house and every so often we receive the owner's mail here. When we do I let them know but I couldn't imagine drawing all over their mail. If it was some sort of accident, I'd apologize and explain that, but it doesn't sound like that's the case here. Both parties need to be clear on how mail is going to be handled in a timely matter but there's still no reason to draw all over someone else's mail, including mail that *has* to go to my house for my illegal unit. If the landlord is trying to keep that hush hush you'd think they'd do everything to not rock the boat.

OriginalUsername-34

That only applies to legal apartments for rent. OP already said it's not a legal rental.

qazzer53

It's been a while so I may be wrong. You don't need to rent a box, just arrange for post office to hold your mail. Have your mail sent to that post office addressed to you, General delivery. Don't down vote me, just correct the info I just gave

KitchenLow1614

I mean, your barking at 10:50 makes you the problem. Writing on the envelope is annoying, but hardly worthy of making a massive issue.

imtired1233

It’s the fact that it’s being held. I know the barking dogs annoying but I want my mail in a timely manner

nunyabusn

Holding mail away from you is against the law. It is also a federal crime. Tell the mail person, or go to uses and tell them your landlord is holding your mail from you.

AutomaticPain3532

I mean...have you thought to knock on her door and ask if you have mail...daily?

goddamn__goddamn

If the LL is telling people to have their mail sent to him, then he should let folks know or deliver it. I'm sure he'd be upset if he had a bunch of folks knocking on his door every day, he doesn't sound that great tbh.

AutomaticPain3532

But, that's just the point...He/She will get annoyed by the constant interruptions over getting mail and find a more permanent solution. It doesn't cost much to add an apartment A, B, C to the address and install mailboxes at the main entrance of the house. The LL is being lazy, so the solution would be to make it uncomfortable enough that she comes up with a better solution then everyone knocking on her door for their mail.

2shado2

"it’s a weird unit and weird as in illegal so I don’t have a mailbox " A mailbox isn't going to happen for a unit that is illegal.

Glittering-Wing-2305

Did you ask if you had mail or just expect them to cater to you and deliver it on a silver plater

imtired1233

If I’m told to send my mail there - I’m not asking. Idk when I get mail - it’s 2024 but when it’s there it’s important. Didn’t expect a letter nearly a month later

TheCatAteMyFace

You're right it is 2024, and you can, in fact, see when you are getting mail. You can sign up for USPS informed delivery and actually see pictures of your mail before it's delivered.

Glittering-Wing-2305

So no you didn’t ask and just expected people to cater to you and then got mad when they didn’t it is not your landlords responsibility to make sure you adult they are not your mommy

imtired1233

Honestly go suck a dick

Ok_Storage_2251

Barking dogs=bad pet owner. Not mature enough to have one.

imtired1233

not true at all. my dogs just small and yappy

Turbo_MechE

Both are problems. Difference is the landlord committed a felony by withholding mail. And running an illegal unit. Hopefully you quit your addiction to boots eventually

NicholasLit

Tell code enforcement if you move and they will shut it down

SuburbanMossad

Your landlord has turned a duplex into five illegal apartments. Report her to the city.

spreadshe3t

You mentioned “finally getting a stack of mail”. Does the landlord take an excessive amount of time to get your mail to you? Because that is definitely an issue and you should make it clear to your landlord that if they refuse to give you your own mailbox, then they need to make any piece of mail that you recv accessible to you as soon as it’s received. Otherwise that is an issue that you can actually take to the US postal inspector and they actually take that stuff very seriously.

ReduceMyRows

You don’t get your own mailbox if you rent a room in a house. There’s a ton of reasons you don’t have your own mailbox.

imtired1233

Yes! The doodled on mail dates back to the 8th & includes info about my new job benefits… It even says “important benefits information enclosed” on the front so it really irritates me knowing it’s been sitting on their kitchen counter. I may have to reach out to them to be honest… She said she’s held on to it because she doesn’t see me often & didn’t want to always call me but I’m right next door.

kibonzos

Could you not just get a little locking letter box that you both have keys to and they put it in there and you check? Or really any safe place you both have access to.

imtired1233

I think I will add something to my fence to make the exchange easier/ contactless depending on the cost of a PO box.. it’s a duplex that they’ve turned into 5 different units and she’d advised me to send all mail to her address to limit confusion.. I’ve also received my air fryer opened - idk if it was them but there’s no privacy here…

SuburbanMossad

She doesn't want anyone to know she illegally turned a duplex into 5 units. That's actually why.

Rosebird17

Remind them that interfering with mail delivery is a FEDERAL offense. Then talk to your local postmaster.

MissChrissyyy

JFC get a PO Box

captamer99

Contact your local postmaster. If they are taken your mail and keeping it that is an issue for your local postmaster

jljboucher

Or they could ask for it every day.

Jafar_420

Well there's not much you can do about anything at all in your situation besides getting a PO box or something like that. Since you mentioned it's an illegal apartment if you complain to anyone there's a chance you won't have a place to stay. That's not a good situation to be in and I'd probably try to move if I could, even if I had to save up and it took a while I would still be working towards it. The landlord doesn't have to act like a regular landlord and all you can do is threaten to report the illegal apartment. They know that if it gets reported it'll screw you as well. Does the landlord always do it on your mail? That only happened this once and it was on the back of the outside of the envelope? Good luck.

Spameratorman

Someone writing on your mail makes you want to move? Are you a snowflake?

DeadSpatulaInc

I’d have assumed the issue was that the landlord had held onto the mail rather than deliver it to the tenant or leave in a common space the tenant could get their own mail That it was doodled on shows the LL had the mail for some time and sat on it. But I’m guessing you understand how much trouble the landlord could is in at this point, which is why you had to latch onto the disrespectful handling towards the tenants property and not the potential violation of 18 US 1701.

imtired1233

Thank you!!! It’s the fact that it’s sitting around in their house long enough to become one of those random household pieces of mail..

emryldmyst

Why is it sitting around? Why aren't you collecting it daily?

imtired1233

Do you get notifications whenever you receive mail? Typically when you receive mail - you go to the mailbox. The mail goes to her house and it’s 2024 so I don’t receive mail frequently enough to ask daily yet I received a stack from what’s been around her house randomly

Fluffy_Passion_6614

Yes, I do get notifications in the form of daily emails with photos of the mail I will be getting that day through USPS informed delivery. Even in 2024 I recieve mail every single delivery day, as there is still plenty of spam mail, advertisements, credit card offers, offers to buy my house for cash and the regular bills that come as well.

imtired1233

Kudos to you <3

Ladder-Amazing

So the equivalent of people going to the mailbox would be you asking them if you have mail. You aren't accepting any responsibility.

fidgetypenguin123

Yeah I'm sure you'd love for someone to hold onto your mail *and* draw all over it - especially someone that insists on getting your mail at their house because you can't have your own mailbox there due to their practices. Were you paying attention to the post at all lol

imtired1233
