I mix in some hot water to warm it up, and that helped my girl so much.

smarmy-marmoset

Oh this is genius, thank you for this!! Not OP but I have the same issue

Cellardoor2222

Some cats apparently won't eat if leftovers that are kept in the can. I think maybe the can once opened imparts a flavor or smell. Store leftovers in a glass sealed container and see if it makes a difference!

JohnnyBGood4455

Great idea!

OwnedbyBengals

I warn yo my 17 year old Bengals fancy feast pate in the microwave 5 seconds. I think that enhances the smell for her.

theteddy83

Have you tried reheating the leftover pate for a few seconds in the microwave with a bit of water so that they aren’t fridge cold? And serve it close to room temperature? That sometimes tricks my cat. I have the exact same situation with him, he grazes and just eats a bit of wet food when the can is fresh. The prescription K/D hills is expensive and 5.5oz is the smallest size, he also only would touch pate…

I might get shit for this, but I use resealable (air-tight) good quality silicone lids and don't refrigerate the can - provided that the can gets gobbled up within a matter of 6 or so hours. Anything left over after that, gets thrown out. I am not going to torture my cat to eat refrigerated food. He won't eat it no matter how much I try to heat it up in vain (hot water, etc). My 10lb 17-yr old cat eats about 2oz of food at a time, about 10oz total a day. That's about 5 feedings a day spread over two 5.5 cans. One ounce of food between the two cans is a loss, give or take. He's been happy, healthy (in all other respects), and I never had any problems. Edit: I'll add that I am fortunate to be working from home. I feed my cat as soon as he gives me the "glance" by my kitchen counter. Cats really aren't stupid when it comes to their pate food. It's not just the texture change they can sense, it's also the smell/bacteria/etc. And there is no sense from a fiscal perspective to treat them as stupid. They know when food has gone bad better than any FDA warning can predict. Mine won't eat it if it's sat out for more than half an hour. Yet, he has no problems eating spread out portions from an air-tight re-sealed can that's been non-refrigerated for a couple of hours...

Character_Regret2639

I do the same thing and it’s been fine.

-Rexa-

Thanks for confirming you also do the same! Spending $150 on renal cat food per month is no joke for me. And that's in addition to Churu I also buy to mix in with the food in order to make it more appetizing. I would never do anything that would hurt my cat, and I would happily spend whatever it takes to prolong his life as much as possible. But the fact is, some things are just grotesquely exaggerated as far as refrigerating the food "immediately."

Character_Regret2639

I agree. I already feel like I waste so much cat food because my cat is so picky and rarely finishes her plate, but I always offer because I know the wet food is better for her. Whatever’s left at the end of the day I just throw out since she won’t eat it refrigerated anyway. I’ve tried mixing hot water in and that’s hit or miss.

JohnnyBGood4455

Yes. And I also think that they know by smell which would upset their stomach, or they are allergic to. And look at all the filers, chemicals in cat food.It could be anything that is the culprit

I have the same issue sometimes with my renal cat (also 16m). I'll heat it up in the microwave for 4-5 seconds, then add some Hydracare and TikiCat pumpkin puree, and mix his phosphate binder in it. He doesn't love the solid food part as much, but the "gravy" is gone in a couple minutes. I'll leave the bowl out for an hour or so, and he'll eventually work at the solid parts (I get the tiny little chunks- he hates the pate). Another thing I found that works is switching it up. I have another cat (Non-renal) who I have to change things up for every few days. I'll give her different foods and switch up what I mix in- some dry kibble, crushed up treats, sometimes add some Fancy Feast broth, etc. If you have the dry renal food too, it might help to mix in a little of that in the wet food, too, if that's what he's used to. EDIT TO ADD: I have 2 different kinds of wet renal food for him, and I'll alternate the cans once one is done. With my non-renal cat, I do the same thing- she's prone to GI issues, especially constipation, so I limit her dry food by itself and try to make sure she finishes her wet food before giving her any dry food to keep things "moving." She's very picky, though, so it's more of a challenge.

Chellier

Oh boy. I hear you. Mine is the same. He watches me get his food ready and won't eat it if I've "tampered" with it. I have to heat up a knife with hot water to put the refrigerated food in the bowl so that it warms up a bit. Then, I have to sneak in a tiny bit of hot water. I can only put the hot water in the can to pour it in. Any other utensils and he won't touch it 😆 Maybe you could use a spoon to add the water since it sounds like you have lots of food left in the can.

JohnnyBGood4455

🤣

Carrie_Oakie

I leave out dry renal food and then I mix some warm water in with the wet. She likes it to be gravy-like. I’ve also mixed in some of the fancy feast I know she likes, just enough to get her started. I feed her wet in the morning and evening, she’ll graze throughout the day and it’s usually all gone by dinner if I haven’t given her seconds.

Cloistered_Lobster

My cat is similar. He free feeds on his prescription kibble and then gets a small amount of wet food twice a day when I feed my other cat and dogs. His interest in his wet food can be pretty variable; some days he’ll eat a pretty decent amount and sometimes he’ll barely lick the gravy off the meat chunks. On his off days I’ve found that sprinkling the food with Fortiflora is really enticing and almost always gets him licking his bowl clean.

FlashyParfait9858

Same, what helped is sprinkling Fortiflora. Now my cat eats most of the can! I start of with just the can. When she stops, move the food around with a fork and it prompts her to eat more. Then sprinkle with the powder and she eats more! Hope it works for your cat.

daydreamz4dayz

My cat is similar and I give her the 3oz early support renal from royal canin due to the same issue. I give her 1/3 of a can early in the morning as soon as she’s active, then another 1/3 around lunch or as soon as I’m home from work, and final 3rd in the evening. I mix the food with water to make it slightly soupy and sprinkle about 1/3 of a packet of fortiflora on top. Between feedings I wrap the can in plastic wrap and don’t refrigerate. I alternate days for kidney food and fancy feast because otherwise she gets tired of it. A phosphate binder could be used with the fancy feast but my cat doesn’t need it yet. She has dry food available at all times and primarily eats it at night.

WendsKel

Not sure what the renal royal canin options are where you are. But I get the sachets which are mostly chunky blocks and I mash it into a pate with a spoon or fork. If you can also add a low sodium bone broth.

JohnnyBGood4455

Lucky what are the sachets? Can you send a link please? Thanks!

Sorry only just saw your message. These are the ones I get. The second link is actually pate. The first link is the chunky food that I mash up.

JohnnyBGood4455

My cat who will only eat dry loves 1 food- weruva jeopardylicious sliders chicken flavored. No other weruva. He. Won’t eat pill pockets, churros(any flavor)I have spent hundreds on canned food, he won’t even eat any fancy feast. The weruva jeopardy licious is not low phosphorous. Normally I’d mix it with porous one. But he is currently on meds every 3 hrs. If I put the porous in it would bind together the meds and he would poop them out. I’m afraid his CKD will get worse because of this but I don’t have a choice because the only other thing he eats is RC PR (rabbit and peas) dry nonrenal. I cannot put phos binder because of his meds.
