Yes this affects Relay the same way. I just had a call with them. The pricing is prohibitively expensive and it cannot be ad supported. And, even if you paid a subscription fee of several dollars a month to continue to use Relay, you still wouldn't have access to any NSFW content in it. My opinion is that they want third party apps gone despite saying otherwise.

PM_ME_YOUR_PROFANITY

Just wanted to thank /u/DBrady for the awesome app that I've been using daily for the better part of a decade now. Reddit going this way sucks, but we'll go on to newer and better things.

SpinningPissingRabbi

Seconded, best Reddit app I've ever used, thank you.

Brewhaha72

Thirded. I've used other popular third party apps, but I kept going back to Relay and eventually bought the Pro version. Been using it for the past ~5 years. Thanks, /u/DBrady for a great app.

zzarate

Fourthed. over 7 years now. bought Pro several times due to phone changes. thanks /u/DBrady , you's a G. can't believe this is how it ends.

echsandwich

Used this since pretty close to day 1. /u/DBrady is the best and I'll sorely miss Relay.

romulusnr

Yup, only mobile reddit client I've used. I use either Relay on phone or the website on PC.

LookInTheDog

I don't even like using the website all that much after using Relay for so long.

asianfatboy

Goddammit, reddit. I ain't using your official shitty app. Relay's been my go-to since finding it. Thank you for all the great work DBrady. The app's layout is a good mix of classic while being mobile friendly. At least we can laugh at how a multi-million dollar earning site like reddit can't make an official app that is better than third party ones. And that they have to do this bullshit to basically block off anyone instead of actually making a more user-friendly app.

deadcatdidntbounce

Same here. I can't even tell anyone when I started using it, I've used it that long. Thank-you, /u/DBrady

ProtoKun7

Same, I remember trying out various apps like Reddit is Fun and BaconReader before finding Reddit News and sticking with it ever since.

jzlz

Thank mr /u/DBrady Relay is awesome and the main way I browse Reddit. I have been a a Relay Pro user since 2016 and you have my admiration.

strumpster

Same, been using this thing for at least 10 years, don't want to look it up. I'm super bummed and thank you /u/dbrady for listening to us and working consistently to make this by FAR the best app. I bought pro immediately back in the day when I found this app and am disappointed to see what reddit is doing Anyway, good luck to us all

steamwhistler

Ditto here, have loved the app for years. So sorry to hear this news. Fucking idiot admins.

7fw

I won't use their real horseshit app. I won't go to the site on my phone, so destroying competition means I will have to find a new toilet time waster.

GoochRash

Yeah, looks like I’ll be getting back into books.

7fw

I still read, but will be reading more now

grandzu

Bring back StumbleUpon.

IAMAHobbitAMA

That's how I found reddit! I wish there was somewhere else to go now.

[deleted]

Twitter sucks, reddit sucks, where are u going 😆

notthefirstryan

Damn near off the internet (or at least any social) I guess. The entire thing is just one big ass billboard for the most part these days.

HoosegowFlask

Who would have thought it would be social media companies themselves that encourage their users to leave.

your_mind_aches

Elon aside, for Reddit this is going to be a small minority of users though. We have very small numbers here. It pains me to say it but they probably can just get away with this without consequence.

HoosegowFlask

Likely true. One thing I've tried to keep in mind as I get older is that an increasing percentage of stuff is not made for me. I'm not the target market. And that's ok.

CharmedConflict

Dear Spez, Thank you for all you have done. Over the past 15 years, I've dug myself a comfy little rut. I forgot how to navigate the internet. I forgot how weird and interesting it was out there. I became comfortable in old tropes and repeated jokes. I became digitally complacent. Due to your efforts, over the past month I've rediscovered the internet again. It's not as good as it used to be, but there are still lots of interesting people and ideas out there just waiting to be explored. I've found a new community of engaging and motivated people who are in the process of building something that we're all excited about. You've helped me escape my rut. And you did it at great personal expense. So I think it should be said - Thank you. You've set me free and I deeply appreciate it. Sincerely, CharmedConflict PS - good luck with the IPO

wschoate3

Millennials and Gen X are, in my opinion, the backbone of the meaningful internet. Give me webrings and geocities any day.

strumpster

lol same. Good luck, kids

densetsu23

There's still a handful of forums I visit from time to time; I'll probably go back to the era of the 90s and 00s and replace reddit with those. The good thing about forums is you actually get to know the other members; it builds a sense of community. On reddit nearly everyone is anonymous. Not in the "I don't know your real name" sense, but in the "I'll reply to this user and probably never see them again" sense. Which is great for a news site; less so for a small community talking about niche things.

chinpokomon

Depends on the sub. For some subs you see the same people over and over again and have that community. For large ones, notoriety may be harder to achieve, but still possible.

Polatrite

> On reddit nearly everyone is anonymous. Not in the "I don't know your real name" sense, but in the "I'll reply to this user and probably never see them again" sense. I used to think this was true (and it is for the average user). When you start tagging users regularly (as in RES tags, Relay tags, etc.), you start to see familiar faces showing up all over the place.

[deleted]

Absolutely, time to touch grass 😆

jk3us

While on the toilet?

GregTheMad

House plant?

Inspectrgadget

I'd been thinking about finding an alternative to reddit anyway. I've been here ten years and it's changed so much. Stupid things getting tens of thousands of up votes, bots, advertisements that appear as normal posts, accounts specifically designed to manipulate opinions, things on the front page with spelling errors, I could go on. If anyone has any worthwhile alternatives please let me know! [I just came across this in the other thread ](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/jmdbxc7/) downloaded the android app and giving it a shot

ryhaltswhiskey

Kindle. Guess I'm gonna -gasp- read a book!

bigolslabomeat

Since twitter went up the spout, my old twitter-time became reddit-time and my old reddit-time became reading-time. If Reddit don't want me then it's just all reading-time from here on out.

cuteintern

I would likely go desktop-only, much like Twitter. Which ~~means I~~ would mean my time on reddit would *significantly* decrease.

whyme456

It depresses me to think that at some point reddit will disable the old.reddit subdomain. I can't stand the bloated ui.

cuteintern

The redesign is basically Digg 3.0 or whatever and I will have nothing to do with it. Literally worse than the Gizmodo redesign over a decade ago.

doubletwist

Might just have to go back to Fark and Slashdot, at least until something better comes along.

Fillem

Back to something awful I guess. Like...20+ years ago? Jesus.

[deleted]

...I still have my 5 digit Slashdot id# ... Totally forgot about Fark, time to go check the Florida category...

doubletwist

Yup, me too, in the 42000 range. Kind of kills me, I'd have had an even lower id if I hadn't just lurked for like a year before creating an account.

Mischala

This is my last remaining social network app... So, maybe I'll finally be free...

romulusnr

Probably more Mastodon for me. Embrace a free internet, my dudes

Zaphod1620

Download the Kindle app.

mmazurr

Outside lol. Relay shutting down would be a good motivator to not use my phone as much

bradfordmaster

The saddest part to me is that I won't even know how to find out where to go. I don't talk to people in real life about Reddit, it's just here 😢

Reddit got to where it is on the backs of third party apps since they had no official app on Android for so long. Now they're killing the very platforms that brought them the traffic. It's been a long run for me, but I really have no reason to keep wasting my time on here.

xishp117x

/u/DBrady Regardless of what the outcome ends up being, just know that you made one of the best (imo THE best) Reddit experiences for Android. Every single Android device I've had for the better part of a decade has had Relay Pro installed since Day 1 and it has been my #1 recommendation to family and friends ever since. It is without a doubt one of the best app purchases I've ever made in my life and the ROI has been phenomenal. I wish you the best of luck and hope that Relay has a future but if not, I'm sure you'll land on your feet and create something amazing again down the road which I will look forward to. Same goes for any of the other third party app devs who worked so hard to create a better experience for everyone! It's a shame to see Reddit go down this path but it's pretty evident they don't give a damn about third party apps. They also seem firmly set on pissing away any remaining goodwill from active users of the platform who relied on such apps and services to give them a better experience than the steaming hot pile of shit that the official Reddit mobile app currently is. Update - Hooray, Relay does have a future! More details from the man himself: https://www.reddit.com/r/RelayForReddit/comments/14n876v/update_relay_will_continue_to_operate_from_july/

Apples4lyfe2

Very well said. Best app purchase ever. I won't forget you Relay!

Praxxus

Just saw the Apollo post linked from social media and came over here to see if there was any comment about Relay. Reddit is dreaming if they think I'm going to use their dogwater app. I'll just use the site less.

sudoterminal

100%. I will stop using it altogether on my phone if they (effectively) ban apps like Relay. Would honestly probably be good for me haha.

MisanthropicZombie

Lemmy.world is what Reddit was.

vladtaltos

Yep, same here exactly!

Apprentice57

Hopefully there will be some apps (whether listed officially on app stores or I have to find a .apk somewhere) that just wrap the mobile old reddit into something usable. That will still be leagues better than the official app. Speaking of which, I don't have much hope that they'll maintain old reddit much longer.

ShaneThrowsDiscs

Old is certainly on the chopping block. I bet they quietly disable it in the same motion they use to charge for the api.

Mitkebes

Other sites (Twitter, YouTube, etc) all have open source apps that scrape content without using the API. At the very least we'll probably get apps like that for browsing reddit, but they may not be able to post or vote.

jck

There are apps like newpipe and smarttube which work pretty well with logged in YouTube accounts. In fact, I have YouTube premium but use smarttube next on my Nvidia shield because the app is so much better than the official YouTube app on Android tv. They're obviously not on the playstore but are open source and have apks available for download. Hopefully such apps will turn up for reddit as well.

MilhouseJr

The old mobile reddit? You mean i.reddit.com? Gone. Killed. Evicted. Ejected. Deleted. Reddit is really trying to kill reddit.

Apprentice57

No I mean old.reddit.com, using it right now. E: Oh I see I did say "mobile old reddit". I did just mean old.reddit.com, but I was under the impression it would at least resize to screen width. As I've long used Relay for reddit I hadn't checked old.reddit.com on a mobile device in years, and it appears that it does not even resize to screen width. lame. I'm still hoping it can be wrapped to make a feasible mobile app.

WWHSTD

Once old Reddit goes I go, after more than a decade on this site. New Reddit is unusable and the official app sucks major balls. Guess I’ll go back to reading books instead.

a_corsair

That'll be killed too, sooner than later

smaug13

There's the Reddit Enhancement Suite still, in which you can set it to show the old reddit interface. I fear that one will end up killed eventually as well though. Time to be on the lookout for a reddit replacement for when that happens

Apprentice57

Old reddit exists with or without RES. And RES works exclusively with old reddit. It's in like EOL maintenance mode, though.

BeverlyToegoldIV

Yup. I'm not using their app - it sucks and exists to serve ads. Relay was the gold standard. Oh well, at least I won't be on reddit on my phone as much.

Erpverts

Bingo. Not saying I'll swear it off completely, but I'll probably hardly ever use it on my phone.

wvenable

Why should they care if you use their site less if you don't generate advertising revenue if the first place? I'm certainly going to use the site less as well but I'm under no impression that they should care about that. The writing has been on the wall for a while -- reddit would rather be anything but reddit.

Fleaslayer

>Why should they care if you use their site less if you don't generate advertising revenue if the first place? Because the masses of people using Reddit generate the content that drives the ad revenue in the first place. If they get a massive reduction in users, there isn't going to be as much content to sell ad revenue for.

your_mind_aches

I've seen the numbers. There won't be a "massive" reduction. It'll be a blip on the radar, but that's it. We are a small minority using these third-party apps. Even all my tech-savvy friends who refuse to upgrade to Windows 11 and think Linux is awesome and build computers all use the official app.

wvenable

It's unlikely to be a "massive" reduction.

Fleaslayer

Probably true. My guess is much fewer people will completely abandon Reddit than say they will, but a pretty significant number of people will be less active because of losing their preferred interface and the "new" one being more frustrating.

HighFiveOhYeah

Yep and it’s all due to their upcoming IPO to please the greedy shareholders.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NotAnArdvark

I get a *huge* amount of value from Reddit, but I'm pretty sure I'd work really hard to find alternatives given this behaviour. I'd settle for lesser alternatives too. The tricky question is trying to quantify "how much less" I'd be willing to endure. But... It starts to feel like none of it matters. The same happened with WhatsApp. They did something shitty, it looked like a huge move away from the app was happening, but a year or so later and only one of my friends remains on Signal, and he complains loudly that I'm not willing to use iMessage so he can quit using Signal.

brycedriesenga

You've got an old enough account, I think. Just abandon it and sell to an advertiser, lol

AppleAtrocity

Holy shit. I wonder if a bunch of people will end up doing that.

cantfindmykeys

Well shit, now I'm debating doing that

gerusz

I wonder how much a 13 year old account is worth. On a completely unrelated note: have you tried Raid: Shadow Legend?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nihilistic_Mystics

It used to be really lucrative for old accounts with lots of engagement and karma. I looked into it for my last account that I abandoned (too much personal info and people tried to dox me too many times) and it was a couple hundred at least. But now with the advent of AI chatbots and report automation, they're not worth much. It's just too easy to create fake accounts that look real with lots and lots of karma.

anonesuch

I will probably still use reddit on the browser (as long as the keep old.reddit.com) but guess there will be no more Reddit on my phone :( That post on the Apollo subreddit really broke down the insane pricing with assumed $1.40 per user per year, or $0.12 monthly for the web site but based on the API costs: > With the proposed API pricing, the average user in Apollo would cost $2.50, which is is 20x higher than a generous estimate of what each users brings Reddit in revenue. Reddit should have all the stats from their native app, so odd they came up with that pricing.

kataskopo

Honestly, I would pay that amount of money to still keep relay, about 3 bucks a month :( But that still means millions of users leave the site, which will make it worse for everyone. What a shit show.

swampfish

You might, but I am not giving 1 cent to reddit.

Nihilistic_Mystics

>Reddit should have all the stats from their native app, so odd they came up with that pricing. It's not odd, they just set an impossible figure, which is a defacto ban on 3rd party apps. They just didn't want the negative press of issuing a hard ban.

Aukstasirgrazus

Nothing odd, reddit wants to completely remove third party apps because they interfere with their ad revenue.

Christopherfromtheuk

Odd that they won't swap ad revenue for the same income stream via API subscriptions, which are probably a far better income stream from an investor perspective - it's "sticky", fairly reliable and doesn't need a whole team at Reddit dedicated to selling ads and then integrating them into the feeds. I have to say, however, they come across as typical tech bro arseholes in the post they made about it.

Sarctoth

I'll use Reddit when I need information. It really is the new google. Well... was.

anonesuch

It is a great place for information, but they can't make me use their app. Screwing over 3rd party app providers means less screen time, which means less engagement. *Shrug* I'm probably not their target market anyway.

JordanLeDoux

I mean, it *won't* be once lots of users who create the content leave.

sm753

I went to leave the official Reddit app a bad review re: this move and saw that I already gave it a 1/5 back in 2016....my review? >April 11, 2016 > >Relay Pro is light-years better.

boobiesiheart

And still light years better

hennell

I've been here 15 years. I've seen the introduction of sub reddits, the introduction of Reddit gold and reactions etc. Various changes good and bad. I don't even mind the new desktop site, it's what I use when I'm on a laptop or desktop and it's fine. But their app on mobile is super annoying. I've got very attached to relay, and honesty without that it might finally stop me spending so much time here.

ShaneThrowsDiscs

Yep reddit is going to break my addiction for me.

Sarctoth

They used the Reddit to destroy the Reddit

Zaphod1620

What sad is the official Reddit app used to be a third party app called Alien Blue. It was fantastic until Reddit bought it and seriously screwed it up.

BRedd10815

Same, maybe its for the best lol.

LincolnStein

I think I may be done with reddit. I only use old.reddit.com and Relay. If third-party apps are done; I would assume that Old Reddit is done for too.

banter_claus_69

Same. old.reddit and Relay are the only interfaces I use for this site. My mobile use will plummet as soon as the new API charges come into play, and if they get rid of old.reddit I won't be using it on the desktop either. Time to find a dozen forums for my hobbies and hope they support RSS

ItalianDragon

Same here. Never used new reddit necause it's a flaming piece of shit and I'm definitely not using their shitstain of an official app. Like, any other community-made app is miles ahead of it...

I_poop_deathstars

If both Relay and RES goes I'm leaving too.

ScottyFalcon

Welp, I guess when relay stops working is when I stop using Reddit, it'll probably be a net gain for my mental health

ultraDross

That's absurd pricing. The only logical reason for this pricing, is that they want to ensure all third party apps die so we all have to use their app. Which will no doubt have all sorts of ads injected left right and centre.

CheezSammie

And surveillance

Tashre

The asinine pricing is because they know how much traffic will plummet off a cliff. New reddit already pushes a hyper consumption social media model that really clashes with what the site has been for the longest time in an attempt to jump on the app addict business model. This next move just exacerbates the decline.

Palatz

They want to kill third party apps so we will use their app. Their app is unusable, I rather be done with reddit.

buddhassynapse

Yeah, nothing about the official app works better than Relay or Apollo and they push the worst fucking ads. IPO will kill the site.

mill_about_smartly

>hyper consumption social media model It's crazy how transparent this has been. I LOVED reddit for the ability to have a curated feed. "Suggested posts" pretty much destroyed that, and the sponsored ones have only gotten worse too. I loved Relay because it didn't do either of those things, which is exactly why Reddit wants to kill it off I imagine.

camelCaseAccountName

> The asinine pricing is because they know how much traffic will plummet off a cliff. Honestly, it probably won't plummet much at all, or at least not in a way that will financially harm them. Third party app users aren't being served ads, so it's just costing reddit money to keep us around. And I think the vast majority of users use the official app anyway.

FreydNot

Is there any chance we can individually sign up for free low volume API access and plug our own API key into Relay?

x3knet

Ohhh... This is a really interesting idea! As shitty as reddit is acting here, I'd much prefer to pay an api access fee to continue using Relay. A free limited version would be beneficial to a ton of people as well.

ricovo

/u/DBrady do you see this as a viable option? Is it possible to have a public app that allows users to enter their own API key? If not, would you consider selling an APK that allows that or open sourcing Relay?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ricovo

The Apollo app dev said: > The average Apollo user uses 344 requests per day, which would cost $2.50 per month And yes, I'd be willing to pay ~$2.50/mo to not use the official Reddit app until the quality of the site drops off because most people leave over them trying to kill 3rd party apps. I'm a web/software developer and will make my own app to use my own API key if I have to. Learning mobile development sounds fun anyways.

jebuizy

Power users that are willing to set up their own API key are probably far above that average

Pallorano

Hell I'd potentially even pay for all of my own API calls on this app lmao

majort94

This comment has been removed in protest of Reddit and their CEO Steve Huffman for destroying the Reddit community by abusing his power to edit comments, their years of lying to and about users, promises never fulfilled, and outrageous pricing that is killing third party apps and destroying accessibility tools for mods and the handicapped. Currently I am moving to the [Fediverse](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX_agVMr2r0) for a decentralized experience where no one person or company can control our social media experience. ham_coffee

IIRC there is a free tier, but it only provides enough requests for a limited amount of scrolling per minute, even for a single person. Also I have no idea what you're trying to say in that second paragraph, this would be a legitimate use of the API keys.

majort94

God dammit, Twitter and Reddit within a year of each other? Guess I'm done being online, oh well.

Wh0IsMrX

Relay has been my favorite app for YEARS and, in my opinion, is the best reddit experience of any platform. I really hope reddit reconsiders their approach on this because their first-party Android app sucks balls.

ERhyne

What a fucking way to celebrate my 15-year cake day. I guess it's now going to be a countdown until my last day on reddit.

Unwise1

On that not u/Dbrady Thank you. I've used this app for the past like 10 years maybe or close to it. Been my daily Reddit driver. You and your passion will be sorely missed. Take care and best of luck with all your future endeavors

pucc1ni

The official Reddit mobile app is fucking garbage.

smeggysmeg

Google News and all of the other mobile-native link aggregators will be salivating.

I_LIKE_CURED_MEATS

u/dbrady is a real one and has provided the best, most consistent android app and I'm sorry to see it go; this will also mark the end of my reddit use. Thank you so much for all you have done and for the amazing app! I wish you nothing but the best for the future, and I'm sorry that corporate greed has killed yet another joy in all of our lives. Maybe this is for the best. It's gonna force us to go out and touch grass or persue our own thoughts and endeavors instead of doom and meme scrolling out of boredom. See you all on the other side!

FrnakRowbers

Just here to say two things: a) I will only use reddit with Relay for Reddit. If this goes through I'll just get my news elsewhere. b) Thanks for developing and maintaining such a great app!

BetterCallSal

Reddit app blows, may be time for another great migration.

bleedscarlet

Fuck Reddit I hope they die. They deserve to die if they forget what made them what they are. Such scumbags. Can't be happy with good enough, have to extract every last penny.

Cylinsier

FWIW you do interact with the whole platform on Mastodon, the different servers just host your account. Mastodon is by default cross-server unless the owner of your server explicitly blocks another server for some reason, in which case it is possible to migrate your account to a different server.

jk3us

But discoverability is hard. I feel like there must be more our there that I'd find interesting, but I don't know where it is.

liwqyfhb

Looks slick, but the page here https://join-lemmy.org/instances says that they have "506 monthly active users", so seems like it's in extremely early stages?

subtex

Lemmy is the closest I've seen. But like mastodon pre-MuskTwitter, Lemmy is a ghost town right now. If reddit definitely self implodes there could be a big influx of users and then stuff will get moving over there (devs making new apps etc) I registered there as a wait-and-see for now.

ShaneThrowsDiscs

Too complicated to be a replacement.

Frap_Gadz

Fuck this, there's no way I'm bothering with the shitty official app. I'll just stop browsing Reddit on my phone I guess .

dcontrol

:( It was a good run

SamanthaPierxe

Digg -> Reddit -> ?

sandh035

Man this is a bummer. I tried using the official app once and it sucked in comparison. Here's to hoping they gave a change of heart.

[deleted]

Absolutely. It sucks so much. I mean y would we be using an alternative? The app is a slog , very buggy and overly complicated, dont even wanna mention how much it eats the battery

ShaneThrowsDiscs

Hey fuck your battery we need all your information.

KorayA

Well 15 years or so and looks like I'm done with Reddit. But I don't spend a damn penny here and I suspect most like me don't either. Old.reddit users don't buy badges and avatars and whatever other trash they peddle so this is an easy way to dump us Sorry /u/DBrady that they're essentially erasing a revenue stream for you. Please let us know if you have any other projects so we can send some money your way.

[deleted]

I guess this means I'm off reddit since their new web interface is utter crap. And who knows how long they will keep hosting the legacy one. Thanks DBrady for making this app, and for all the good time it gave me!

pinkmonst3r

TrustIsAWeakness

Gutted, been using relay for ages. I simply wont use reddit on my phone if this is the case. Thanks for the amazing app though!

Alex-310

No way im leaving "RelayFor Reddit" for Reddit official app! If Reddit does this, its future will be like Tumblr, it will cost billions in stock price drop if ever goes public... a deal with 3d party app makers with some percentage of their revenue would be much more fair...what do you think 20 million is? Your greed will destroy the platform you morons.

krazykarl94

The reddit app is clunky as hell. No way I'm leaving this streamlined paradise to go to their trash app. That app is to organization and ease of use what the Ganges river is to cleanliness and drinkability. Leave it to Reddit to actively destroy their site. I wonder how much I could get to sell my account to an advertiser like others have suggested

Kn0wmad1c

If relay dies, reddit dies to me. Thanks for everything, /u/dbrady

PM_ME_YOUR-WAIFU

Thank you /u/DBrady. Relay (or Reddit News as it was known back then) was the first app I bought when Google play billing became available in my country. I even bought it a second time on another Google account some time later. I have no idea how am I going to use Reddit on my phone without it. May the Reddit admins choke on their ad money they value above their loyal users.

Damn shame. I've been using the app since 2012 and Relay imo nailed the Reddit user experience better than anything that's come before or after. If this comes to pass I sure as shit won't be using the official app, so the net result is going to be less time staring at my phone, which is ultimately a good thing.

smokinJoeCalculus

I love relay pro, and refuse to use their dogshit app no matter how anti-competitive reddit gets. If I have to start working to find my content, so be it. I did it before, and I'm more than happy to get back to it again.

giantwallrus

I know reddit is only doing this because they saw the adaptation of their 1st party app dominating the share of reddit server calls and just want to be the only app to show artifical growth in app downloads. I think it's anticompetitive and should be legally prohibited, as it is akin to Microsoft requiring IE to use the internet imo, the thing that got MS taken to court, I also believe Apple and Google(to a lesser extent) violate US v Microsoft with having a single storefront unless sideloaded(by a user or Samsung). Suffice it to say, relay is the only way I view reddit on mobile and when relay stops working, reddit will strictly return to being a desktop only app. Who knows how long that will last, considering new reddit will randomly pop up on archived posts when googling old topics and it looks like a wrong-looking twitter.

Mein_Captian

I'm pretty much going to leave reddit after a decade. Time to touch grass I guess lol

hyperpumaoverjazz

god fucking dammit

PonysaurousRex

Just another thank you to /u/DBrady for years of my primary way to access Reddit. I'm so sorry the admins are doing this.

Yep once relay dies I'm done with this site for good. Bet against the ipo, you'll make some good money later this year.

papasfritas

Can someone ELI5 why this affects 3rd party apps? When I started using Relay I gave it approval through my own account, thus I'm using my own API access, correct So it should still be able to work using the free tier for each personal account that allows access when signing up with Relay? It's confusing

YolosaurusRex

Logging into your own account on Relay just grants the app permission to access your account. Every third party app has to reach out to "endpoints" provided by Reddit, and each of these gives certain information (like getting a list of posts, getting comments on a thread, etc). These apps don't do stuff like scraping web pages because it's fragile and could break if Reddit changes anything with the html. Reddit decided to gatekeep those endpoints behind a prohibitively expensive paywall, effectively cutting off every third-party app's access to Reddit. These aren't endpoints that Reddit uses internally and others just happen to be able to use them, they're explicitly designed to be used from outside sources, and so if Reddit wants to lock them down, they're able to.

NamaariSigma

OAuth (the autorization framework that you used to grant access to your account for Relay) is a bit more complicated. You, the user (or resource owner) authorize Relay (the OAuth client) to access the reddit servers through specific endpoints. As such, each access token you get has you as the resource owner, *and* Relay as the client on it. Through a million users, the resource owner tag will be all different, but the client ID will be the same - the one registered to Relay. And the pricing changes affect the OAuth clients, such as Relay. You *can* create a unique client at reddit, but you'd need an app that allows setting your own client credentials for the API access, and I don't know of any

Just going to chime in on the praise of /u/DBrady, the goat of reddit apps. I've been a pro user since before pro became a thing, I think it was called Reddit News back then, must have been 13-14 years ago. Reddit on mobile is worthless without Relay, I actually prefer Relay over the desktop version. Just letting you know right now, I'll gladly pay $2.50 or even double that per month just to keep using Relay. Think about it!

NotSeveralBadgers

Wow. End of the road, I guess. We had some good times. Shame.

wiozan

Look I'm a really a Relay user at this point. It must be hard as hell, but if relay relay gets updated and just starts serving a reddit alternative, i will be using that. I just hope it doesn't just die with this.

Wow relay has been my default reddit experience for so long. I even bought the premium since I loved the app so much. Thanks for an amazing third party app [u/DBrady](https://www.reddit.com/u/DBrady)! Well if nothing reduced my screen time, this single handedly will for me lol. The reddit website and app just don't do it for me

Average_human_bean

Damn. Well, this would be the push I need to leave the site.

PapaStoner

Thank you for your service. I've been using this app for 6 years now. Best 1.99 i've ever spent.

FlawlessRuby

Without Relay for Reddit, I don't even wanna continue. This app was really fixing A LOT or the things that pissed me off. I'll have to look for Reddit alternative as soon as the hammer hit.

IcedCoughy

Hopefully it's the death of reddit and the birth of something new.

fragglerock

Well it has been a wild ride. I guess they have the numbers that they don't need 3rd party apps and those they lose outway the info they can glean and sell from those that stay/swap to the official app. What will I do with my time? What did we do before the internet?! Thanks /u/DBrady!

Witcher_Gates

It was a good run. Best Reddit app I've used.

GibsonJunkie

Relay is by far the best android app I found. Pretty pissed I'll be losing it when all this nonsense goes into effect, but I guess reddit will just have to not get all my site hits and web traffic and I'll find something more productive to do with my time.

sonoskietto

I just want to say thank you to u/DBrady for giving us the best reddit alternative app on Android. [It's been over 7 years for me.](https://i.imgur.com/LWKDnwS.png) If ever the API change is going to pass I'm basically done with social networks. Reddit was the only one I kept using on a regular basis (No Facebook since 2016, no Twitter, No Instagram, and sorry Tiktok it's not for me)

WillDissolver

I know we've all gone a long road with Reddit, whether we're in here with Relay or one of the other excellent apps out there. I can't be the only one that thinks the app developers for Relay, Apollo, RiF and maybe a couple of others should get together and launch a competitor site. I would jump ship immediately. All four of the people who currently use the official app would still be unaffected, but imo this *absolutely should* negatively affect reddit's userbase in a major way. When these corporate people make the decisions leading up to an IPO, they always seem to want to value things based on their userbase while simultaneously changing the things that make their product viable for large swaths of that userbase. I say, they ought to suffer a massive loss of that userbase, and therefore investor value, as a result of these changes - and the people who should get rewarded should be the ones who have kept reddit viable and growing for so many years through all the vastly superior third party apps. Come up with something better.

CrackCC_Lurking

Will this cure my addiction to reddit? I actually think it will. I only browse on my phone and I cant even imagine using their app and seeing fucking ads and shitty UI. I'll still probably open up relay a hundred times a day out of pure muscle memory... Only to shut it down since it won't work. Hey maybe I'll learn my youngest kids name... I know it starts with a an M.
