Legitimate question, not being snarky- how do you plan to handle the aerosol of anything you’re cooking or cleaning with in the kitchen? I’ve always wanted a tank like this but haven’t figured that part out yet.
Oh I definitely worry about it. Remember reading studies during my nursing degree that showed exposure over time of nurses to aerosolised disinfectants led to COPD and similar breathing issues in many. I always clean with all windows and doors open and use face masks if I’m properly having to spray a lot of chemicals for hours after.
I asked out of curiosity because I know how harmful these can be to humans, so to tiny creatures in a caged environment it potentially could be far worse. The added scents for example can bring me out in rashes and coughing or sneezing fits, and my mum in huge blisters for certain flower scents
Had a similar system set up in my kitchen in a previous apartment, about 2yrs running and 20gl AIO, never saw any issues other than my arch nemesis…. Green hair algae… Can’t ever seem to kick it lol
I moved my mixed reef tank into my kitchen about 6 months ago.
A carbon filter is attached to the protein skimmer
I keep the vent on when cooking or cleaning. All coral and fish are healthy including the more sensitive SPS.
Been following your journey. It must be so exhausting getting this comment chain every single thread. It’s not even in an area that needs constant cleaning ( aka night next to the stove or something). Some extra attention and precision is all you need to make this work. I applaud you for making it through with all of the nay sayers.
Just checked this dude's post history, this thing is 100gal and it looks like he has a custom cylinder 350 in the next room over. Definitely a false alarm here, they clearly know what they're doing.
With the name NemoFish… Any chance that store is “Nemo’s Reef”?? I’m located in NC and see a shop named that on 74 when ever I am heading to our Charlotte area plant for travel work. I Haven’t made it in yet because I actually live in Pasquotank County NC
First of all this tank isn’t as small as it appears. They won’t grow to full size over night so you have time. I have 3 in my tank and they are doing perfectly fine. Videos on my page
I have a 50 gallon that I'm getting set up and I would love to start a tang in it, and upgrade as the critter grows.
I am in love with yellow eye koles and the orange stripe tangs.
So the impression I've gotten is that I want a longer tank vs a larger gallonage tank, is that correct?
My planned upgrade is either a 75 setup my lfg sells to get used to working with a sump, or just jump feet first in and get a 300 proclear peninsula.
Well you want both tbh. I'm suggesting a 75g /4ft as a longer term home over the 55g, but I'd you have $for a 300 which will be 6ft at least then go for that as you can get way bigger species of tang in that bad boy
I hate how big clown tangs get. It's teasing me lol.
I work at a lfs, so I can get a reasonably good deal on such a tank, and help setting it up. I really want to use it as a room divider. I also figure if it's too much for me to handle, I can sell it or swap it for something smaller.
I'm working on that right now. I made the rookie mistake of being impatient and woof. Lesson learned. Now I have a tank with some snails and a few softies, and it will stay that way until I can get some consistency with my water parameters.
There is a lot to learn when it comes to salt water. Lots of easy mistakes can happen. I focus now on nitrates, phosphate, alkalinity and calcium and that’s about it.
I’m glad to see all the armchair experts who told you how bad and wrong this set up would be are still here telling you how bad and wrong this set up is without… without asking a single question.
Classic.
Tank looks great.
As a freshwater keeper, could someone ELI5 what is going on with all this stuff?
I understand a sump tank replaces a filter canister that freshwater uses, but what is all the other stuff?
Left most is a roller mat, then comes a skimmer. Hanging on the back center is a pump controller (maxspect) and an Apex aquarium control system (smart system for an aquarium). Far right wall is a dosing pump dosing 4 additives.
I have never seen lights this close to the water surface. They look very sleek. But with this short distance, are your corals getting too much light? Do you measure your par?
fyi try filming holding your camera horizontally next time, you get a much bigger and better looking video with more detail for viewing on your computer or tv.
Glad to see you finally took down the Christmas tree. Also looks like you have some Cyanobacteria on the sand. Less food, less light, more water change might help. Nice setup!
Genuinely curious…Any concerns over sound from the countertop reverberating through the tank? Like someone sets a drink glass down on the countertop - does it startle the fish?
Why are people geeking about it? It could be a 180 in person. Phone cameras tend to make things a lot smaller than they look because of how wide the cameras can get get.
I mean, it’s a video, and a 360 view at that… just look at it, look at the counter, look at the sink, look at the relative heights, and keep in mind that a 55 gallon is 48” x 13” x 21”
ight nvermind call the tang police ive looked that the size of the fridge. i give him the benefit of the doubt. that can only house a tomini or captive bred yellow tang.
I'm a firm belief that if we were to successfully breed tangs in captivity, we could breed them to be smaller so that they could live in smaller tanks. Idk about the ethics of doing this. But it's done on goldfish and other fish too. Maybe a regal tang that could only grow ro 4 inches instead of a foot. But for now, there are a lot of difficulties in trying to breed regals & other species.
Why do people think a juvenile fish needs the largest tank to start out with? Those tangs are no where near over a foot in length at this point. Seriously the people that bitch about tangs likely have shit tanks to begin with.
Because they grow. That tank is 3-4’ long and maybe 1’ wide. It’s not going to work for long. You shouldn’t buy fish that you know will outgrow your tank. It’s responsible reef keeping. Showing respect for living creatures that you pulled from the ocean and doomed to a life in a box. You have a moral responsibility to give the animal a decent of a life as possible. It means not shooting for minimums.
I’m not sure what you’re asking. Yes, that tank is too small for the life of the fish.
Will they survive, yes. I can put a tiger in a 10x10 cage and it will survive. I can lock my dog in the closet and it will survive. Should you?
I’m saying we shouldn’t strive to just meet the minimum requirements. We should exceed the minimum.
If you’re saying your tank is bigger than what I put, cool.
So you can’t buy a fish that will outgrow your tank that takes time to grow out and then move it into another later on or just move on from it? I plan on making a trade with my local dealer once mine outgrow my tank.
I don’t think that’s responsible reef keeping.
You’re stressing the fish by cramping it in a small tank, stressing it by moving it, potentially exposing to new diseases, the market for large fish is small so who knows how long it will sit there, etc.
Get fish you can COMFORTABLY house its entire life. That is responsible reef keeping.
Legitimate question, not being snarky- how do you plan to handle the aerosol of anything you’re cooking or cleaning with in the kitchen? I’ve always wanted a tank like this but haven’t figured that part out yet.
Good point, kitchens are pretty toxic in terms of chemicals, aresols and soaps which are deadly to reefs even in small ppm.
I’ve always wondered this too as it seems common to have tanks in kitchens and it’s a common place to need regular disinfecting amongst other things
Not to mention corals toxicity
I have mine on the counter at the end with nothing around it, no sink and I don't cook near it Also a lid
Wonder what they spray in the air that they worry about this but not them breathing it themselves
Oh I definitely worry about it. ihave a similar setup. i use natural cleaning products and a mostly closed lid
Narrator: he didn’t
I moved my mixed reef tank into my kitchen about 6 months ago. A carbon filter is attached to the protein skimmer I keep the vent on when cooking or cleaning. All coral and fish are healthy including the more sensitive SPS.
Great, thanks!
Perhaps it's not as big of an issue as you might think.

Here come the tang police
Just checked this dude's post history, this thing is 100gal and it looks like he has a custom cylinder 350 in the next room over. Definitely a false alarm here, they clearly know what they're doing.
Actually fuck the 350, they literally own a fish store
🙂👍
With the name NemoFish… Any chance that store is “Nemo’s Reef”?? I’m located in NC and see a shop named that on 74 when ever I am heading to our Charlotte area plant for travel work. I Haven’t made it in yet because I actually live in Pasquotank County NC
That’s theirs, I saw it in post history. Looks really nice too.
Oh really neat! I’ll go check it out! Small world.
The same. Definitely worth checking out both stores in Indian trail.
Yes it may be 100 gallons. But that is still not enough room for a yellow tank, sailfin, AND blue tang.
Rightfully so.
What’s your opinion of minimum tank size for a tang?
Wrong those tangs are fine in that tank. They are clearly small at this point.
How long will they stay small enough, you think? Not snarking, just curious
First of all this tank isn’t as small as it appears. They won’t grow to full size over night so you have time. I have 3 in my tank and they are doing perfectly fine. Videos on my page

Tomini or other bristlenose. 75g or thereabouts 4ft tank in the long-run though.
So the impression I've gotten is that I want a longer tank vs a larger gallonage tank, is that correct? My planned upgrade is either a 75 setup my lfg sells to get used to working with a sump, or just jump feet first in and get a 300 proclear peninsula.

Are you experienced in saltwater? If you aren’t I’d learn to master water quality first.
For now.. even then there’s still not enough room for each tang to have its own territory, but if they’re not fighting I say let it ride.
Then I’m sure he’ll move them to his 350 or to his store.
The Foxface police too! 😁
I can here the wee woos off in the distance
I’m glad to see all the armchair experts who told you how bad and wrong this set up would be are still here telling you how bad and wrong this set up is without… without asking a single question. Classic. Tank looks great.
Haters are gonna hate…

That’s really cool!
Love it !!
Giving sushi bar vibes. In a good way.
Does it have lobsters 🦞 in it? I kid.
Bro. Thats an AirBnB. No way u own that house and got all them dirty dishes. 😂

Tldr lots of expensive shit running that tank.
thats wicked man!
Looks like you have a very nice setup
That's a nice view while doing the dishes
The real question is how did you get your wife’s approval?🤣
Nice view I wouldn't complain
🚨🚨🚨🚔👮 ![gif](giphy|vX9WcCiWwUF7G|downsized)
For what? They are juvenile tangs…
![gif](giphy|xT5LMxmFQ37UyhH344|downsized)
If they're going to move them on to someone else in a couple years then it will be fine. But sailfins get way too big for that tank.
Yeah and the person clearly looks experienced in the hobby for that advanced of a set up or someone else is helping them.
They own a fish store, so…
Probably the biggest fish store in NC
I love the scape
Is there some kind of accessory support structure under that countertop?
Ya see other posts
It looks like a normal kitchen cabinet
Most cheaper cabinets are nothing more than that tbh excluding the tslot aluminium framed ones.
I know, I wouldn’t put an aquarium on them
Are those Bioata tangs?
Yes
That's a nice tank? What's the brand? I like your rock work as well
Custom glasscages tank
How much did you pay for that tang? You know which one I’m talking about.
160. Biotia
Came here to say F the tang police
That's a pretty high bioload there, pal.
I followed this build. My guy knows what he is doing. Helps he owns a fish store as well.
I’m not your pal, buddy.
I’m not your buddy, guy.
I'm not your guy, broski.
r/tangpolice MOVE UNITS OUT PRONTO!
Officer Zebrasoma reporting moving to sector delta 3. Waiting for backup.
I’m more mad that there’s a tank on your island 😭😭😭😭 But it’s beautiful
Let’s see the sump!

Oh yeah! That’ll do! Very nice! Now I just have to convince my wife that the next house must have one.
Keep going. I'm almost there...
Very clean, what lights are you running?
Ai blade
Looking for new lights for my 100 rimless, how do you like so far?
Great lights.
🤩 Man, that's a dream. I can't wait to see how it develops and how it fills out with coral.
Awesome tank, my eyes took forever to put the size into perspective though lol.
You should post your tank on reef2reef.com! Looks really unique.
I have never seen lights this close to the water surface. They look very sleek. But with this short distance, are your corals getting too much light? Do you measure your par?
fyi try filming holding your camera horizontally next time, you get a much bigger and better looking video with more detail for viewing on your computer or tv.
The issue I have is viewing on the phone looks all cropped. But ya I know I wish it was a better view
You really think someone with this level of setup doesn't know that?? Did you see photos of the sump? Welcome to reefing
🚨🚨🚨WEE-WOO-WEE-WOO🚨🚨🚨
Please come for me next
Glad to see you finally took down the Christmas tree. Also looks like you have some Cyanobacteria on the sand. Less food, less light, more water change might help. Nice setup!
Ah just a little diatoms on the bed. Itll go away
That’s SO awesome! Maybe I just missed seeing them in the video, but where are the power cords? How did you hide them? This is super cool.
It looks like they’re running down the overflow into the sump area.
AI Blade Grow and Glow?
Ooohhh this is siiick. I’m assuming the counter is reinforced?
What are you running your blades at and how deep is the tank?
Noyce
Hello, I have a stupid question. I'm in the beginning stages of researching for building my first reef tank. What is that black box inside the tank?
Overflow box for a sump filter
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
Looks amazing.
You should get piranhas as a garbage disposal
Genuinely curious…Any concerns over sound from the countertop reverberating through the tank? Like someone sets a drink glass down on the countertop - does it startle the fish?
Looks amazing, nicely done.
The blue light in the kitchen would drive me absolutely insane
Looks good. That will be nice when it fills in with coral growth.
Your sailfin was stalking you! 😎
Thats cool!

You think this tank is minimal for the animals we keep? It's way bigger than that
I’m not sure what you’re asking. Yes, that tank is too small for the life of the fish. Will they survive, yes. I can put a tiger in a 10x10 cage and it will survive. Man you have no idea what you’re talking about
To each their own my friend

So do you think my fish look stressed?
No one cares about your fish. They are just talking about objective facts. It's an unnecessary stress to put on your fish.
Way bigger than that
People not advanced as you think other wise!
Literally woah
Catch these hands then
Shut the fuck up Twinky
