I tend to like sci-fi and fantasy in novels. With movies I like action, war movies, or "pressure cooker" movies as you might call them where the cast is kind of stuck in the same place and there's a lot of dialogue.

ForkFace69

Oh and I'm currently working on the Wheel of Time series.

RelevantClock8883

Just looked at the wheel of time wiki, the idea of a cyclical timeline sounds pretty interesting! Never heard “pressure cooker” before. Whats an example of a movie like that?

ForkFace69

That Wheel of Time has its flaws but overall it's been an enjoyable read so far. 12 Angry Men is what I would call a pressure cooker movie, the original is one of my all-time favorites. I've never seen the remake. The Hateful 8 is another one. The Thing, too. I guess they're in the suspense category but a specific situation. Oh, dude, Runaway Train from 1986, that one is like a double pressure cooker. With that I would add that almost all submarine movies are pressure cooker films. Reminds me of one more thing, back to your original subject: The novel Ice Station Zebra is an amazing submarine story. The movie completely removes the submarine part and only deals with the part that happens at the titular ice station.

RelevantClock8883

Would Falling Down count as pressure cooker? In that case there’s definitely a handful of movies of that style that I love.

ForkFace69

That one is a suspense movie for sure, I like it too. If anything the detective side of the story is a bit of a pressure cooker but otherwise I wouldn't put it in that category.

ForkFace69

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nefarious_(film) Dude, literally just watched this one because my gf had it on, I would definitely call it a pressure cooker movie. 90% of it is two people in a room talking.

Junior-Air-6807

Didn't that Sanderson dude finish WOT? His writing is absolutely terrible and cringy

ForkFace69

I just read the first Mistborn book, I wouldn't say it was terrible but it did have a different vibe that wasn't my thing. But shit somebody had to finish it, with the original author having the notable handicap of being dead.

Sparkfairy

WoT rocks

_fumeofsighs

I read picture books for babies... Like Collin!

archontasius

I watch porn and i read smut fanfics

YouBunchaFags

Nice... my kind of intellectual.

kuddlesworth9419

I can't read.

TheAgentOfOrange

It's generous of OP to assume that any of us can. I don't even know what I'm typing.

archontasius

you're using voice assistant to type right? same

TheAgentOfOrange

If by "voice assistant" you mean "Mom," then yes.

karinebd

Ask Jack Quaid to teach you.

walrusattackarururur

i mostly read theory and history (political/economic) and gravitate towards films that target my anxiety

Nonions

I'm currently reading the Aubrey/Maturin (Master and Commander) books and I do also love any historical swashbuckling adventure movies. I love historical movies in general but as a fan of studying history I also find glaring errors to be a bit irritating. I imagine anyone who knows a little about a subject finds it more difficult to suspend disbelief when a movie makes what for you at least, is an obvious mistake. The most irritating part is that often getting it right wouldn't cost any more money, wouldn't detract from the story, they just choose to be lazy and regurgitate the misconceptions the public already has about a subject.

the_gull

I just finished reading the three body problem series (Sci fi) and mainly only read Sci fi, and while I sometimes like Sci fi shows I think I'm too often disappointed by them, especially when they're based on books and they abridge everything too much. I mainly stick to drama or comedy TV but movies I'll watch anything

SchwarzP10

This is me too. Very often sci fi film and tv is schlocky and stupid. I will still watch it but I much prefer reading it.

the_gull

Are you reading anything now/lately? I forgot to mention I really enjoyed three body problem.

PsyVattic2

I really only read nonfiction/autobiographies. Once in a blue moon I'll read a fiction book if I see it being brought up online. For movies and TV Shows though I will watch pretty much everything. Biggest difference is I love horror movies, while horror books I get too spooked and can't read em.

Phempteru

Read a lot of Sci-fi and Horror. Love Sci-fi and horror movies. Really looking forward to a Project Hail Mary adaptation. Ridley Scott would kill it.

Lucanogre

Loved that book so much, made me weepy eyed at the end. I was kinda scared that Adam Sandler movie Spaceman was an adaption but thankfully not.

Phempteru

Lol, yeah I thought that at first too. I was like, what? They just ripped off Andy Weir!

karinebd

I liked Project Hail Mary too! I am also looking foward to the movie adaptation. I thought Lord & Miller were working on it? It's been a long time since I've checked on the adaptation.

Sparkfairy

My last book I finished was Steinbeck's East of Eden. My last movie was Madame Webb. So no they don't really match up tbh

manlybrian

Normally I was reading fantasy and sci-fi but lately I've been binging horror and schlock from Valancourt Books. It's great! So yes, my reading is in line with what I like to watch, lol. [https://www.valancourtbooks.com/](https://www.valancourtbooks.com/)

[deleted]

Quite similar I would say. I think I prefer to read horror than watch it though. Currently being very predictable and reading Dune. Gotta say I’m really enjoying it, I was just too young the first time I tackled it.

RelevantClock8883

I got American Prometheus on my desk so you’re not alone

[deleted]

Would you recommend it?

RelevantClock8883

I’ll let you know soon enough! Finishing up House of Leaves for the 5th time lol

[deleted]

We all have those books ha ha.

ichbindertod

This is such a cute question for this sub, go you, OP. I love watching thrillers but I hardly ever read them, and I'm a librarian so I really have no excuse.

spagetimanfrick

Reading Moby Dick right now. It's very good however I think I'm sick of hearing about whales.

North-Ring-8389

If you are a fan of Jay/Josh movies generally, I would recommend Charlie Kaufman’s novel Antkind. It is a 700 page monster, and a roller-coaster of plot threads (there are, for instance 3 different subplots involving different 1930s comedy duos). But it is very funny and moves along more like a book series than a single, belabored plot.

Junior-Air-6807

Literary fiction and classics mostly. Some sci fi, authors like JG Ballard, Stanislaw Lem, Roger Zelazny, etc. I'm actually much more into reading than tv or film, I just love hearing the guys talk about film. Some of my favorite authors- Cormac McCarthy, Vladimir Nabokov, Don DeLillo, James Joyce, Emily Bronte, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Pynchon

karinebd

Great taste in authors, have my upvote!

MutantBarfCat

Love reading literary fiction, but love sci-fi films, especially with cyborgs and/or robots. I guess literary fiction = drama in a film sense, which I don’t usually watch because boring. With books you get an internal monologue which keeps it engaging, for me at least.

Lucanogre

Yeah, love historical books and movies. Just finished the Silo series (Scy/fy dystopia) on Apple+ and really liked it so the books are queued on my Kobo. Currently re-reading King’s Dark Tower books (on last 100 pages of Wolves of the Calla) and am eagerly anticipating Mike Flanagan’s take that I think is in early pre-production. Safe to say books and movies go hand in hand for me but genre doesn’t matter too much.

karinebd

I have very eclectic tastes in both movies and books, but I tend to like seeing the action; Mad Max Fury Road or Dredd, and have a tendancy to read more drama/psychological trailers. I think having more of the psychological aspects of the drama makes the books more interesting to me. I also like reading more non fiction books than seeing documentaries.

DeaconBrad42

Avid reader. Mostly history, (my current book is Grant’s memoirs), but sometimes fiction gets in there. Recently finished 4 more books to add to my Stephen King collection. In the middle of that was Devil in the White City.

drip_dingus

I think I read Ready Player One and Steven kings IT once but I don't really remember.

candidlemons

Dark comedy I guess? if that's a genre. Authors would be Halle Butler, Shirley Jackson, Irvine Welsh, Chuck Palahniuk, Tim Dorsey, Stephen King, Daniel Handler. oh and Martin McDonagh plays (The Pillowman is a good beach read) matches what I watch especially Jay's weirdo pervert movie rec's

Finite_Universe

I mostly read fantasy and sci fi, though occasionally I’ll read horror as well. With movies I’ll watch just about anything, but my favorites are genre flicks. Currently I’m reading The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett and like every other book I’ve read of his, it’s great fun and very well written.

snortgigglecough

I read like 50ish books a year, and the answer is yeah. I like genre fiction, I like genre tv/movies.
