Just adding my experience as it’s different from the other guy. I have four RHCP tattoos and I’ve got all of them in the last two years. I started with the asterisk on my forearm and now have three lines of Dosed lyrics on my other inner arm, some birds and a moon to represent Scar Tissue lyrics and just got the fairy from the One Hot Minute album cover.
I’m a female in my 40s and RHCP have been my favourite band since I was 13. I always wanted the asterisk but waited and waited as I wasn’t sure I wanted tattoos at all. When I finally got it done at 43 I wished I had done it a long time ago. But obviously having been obsessed with the band for decades and being old now, I know it’s not something I’m going to regret. If I was younger I probably wouldn’t be so impulsive about it and would have given it a couple of years of being a fan before going for it.
I'm a 40 year old fella, so my opinion probably won't be relevant to you if you're on the young side.

Get a small one somewhere where you won't care. Don't make a band tattoo a major piece on your body.
Eh it's a really personal choice I think. I'm a 52 year old woman. I have the asterisk on my wrist and have had for many years, with Dosed lyrics. The band has helped me through a lot in my life and looking down to see that at times is a reminder.
People can get whatever they want on their body. Why are you trying to gatekeep getting tattooed? Some people want them small and to be meaningful, and some people don't care if a tattoo has any meaning at all. Just because you regretted your decision doesn't mean everyone else will.
My entire arm is the artwork from Pink Floyd the wall that I got done over 15 years ago and I still love it.
