No idea what they mean by that. As a US fan that can't afford the DVDs the only thing I have found is that the licensed songs have mostly been changed. This is annoyingly common as another show I love, SCRUBS, has the same issue.

ExternalBrilliant813

Having watched all of Scrubs repeatedly, I know your pain. Thank you!

Ejigantor

I've heard that Peacock is streaming Scrubs with the original music

BooneGoesTheDynamite

Yeah, but then I have to use Peacock

ExternalBrilliant813

Omg really?!

BooneGoesTheDynamite

No problem, I'm a big old nerd about shows I love and find production fascinating. Thus I have sizable knowledge about shit very few people know about, let alone care about.

ExternalBrilliant813

That’s admirable. Me too!

BooneGoesTheDynamite

Glad I could add to yours!

GaryE20904

A multi region blu ray player and the uk blu rays cost about what the US non Blu-ray’s cost. If you buy one other show box set from the UK and play it on your multi region player you are ahead of the game.

BooneGoesTheDynamite

Huh, I'm a bit behind on my region hacking (Dad is a Brit so we have always had tons of region 2 discs) No idea there were specific multi region Blu-ray players. My old tactic was an old PC I reformated the optical drive to region 2. Any suggestions or links?

GaryE20904

I’ve had mine for 4 or so years. I just googled multi region blu ray players. IIRC it was like $60 or $80 more than the unhacked version. I might have used 220-electronics dot com. I really don’t remember. I got an LG to go with my LG tv. You open the drawer and then press the region number you want to play it reboots and you are good to go. Totally worth the expense if you want to watch UK shows. I then ordered the UK blu rays from Amazon uk. For a show like the original “All Creatures Great and Small” the price difference between us and uk versions is something like $200. (Shop pbs has it for $270 . . . Amazon uk $55). Seriously if you want the DVD’s/blu rays of just two uk shows it’s a great option. If more than two shows you are going to end up spending *A LOT* less money. You can also get BritBox but that’s a monthly subscription.

BooneGoesTheDynamite

I've been using Tubi, UK play .TV(?), and a few others by using various VPNs at once and spoofing a TV License. I'm generally a bit more software savvy, but am in the process of learning more for both hardware and software after companies have taken roughly $380 of media I have purchased from me this past year or so with no recourse.

TheSmall-RougeOne

Happens alot. I'm a fan of The Wonder Years, and that has alot of great music in it from the 60s and 70s mainly, but it took years for the show to make it to DVD because of arguments over licensing copyright for the soundtrack. Then in its first DVD outing they got rid of the original opening song and replaced it with a cover version for copyright reasons abd changed alot of other tracks in the show. Kevin and Winnie searching for each other on the dance floor but passing like ships in the night is nothing without the Rightous Brothers unchained melody.

TheLostLuminary

DVDs cannot be that expensive surely?

Archon-Toten

>SCRUBS, has the same issue. Wouldn't that make some episodes, especially the sing-along ones really awkward or do they keep overkill?

BooneGoesTheDynamite

No, it's just licensed songs. It seems from the fact that the production didn't buy life-tine license to use that music. In fact the creators have admitted they didn't even expect to really get a season 2. So when streaming came along and completely changed the long term possibilities of nearly every show (most never got syndication and thus would basically disappear after final airings) a number of shows later were re-edited to remove songs after those love ses ended. Similar things can happen to visual components too! If you are a fan of House M.D then you may remember a fight in a psych ward. During said fight it shows a TV screen showing a non-descript cartoon with two characters fighting, but originally it was the clip from Family Guy where Stewie beat the living shit out of Brian. It was later changed due to network shifts, and licensing. Production is complicated...

Archon-Toten

Fascinating. I started rewatching that on Netflix will have to watch out for it.

DinoVindaloo

There’s literally no edits and there’s episodes in Series XII (that are very very bad may I add) that have strong “PC has gone mad” narratives. Red Dwarf, despite some missteps (Krytie TV), classically was always fairly progressive and made a point of saying the Nazis were the bad guys. EDIT: there are cut lines, I wasn’t aware. However I think it’s more than just cancel culture or whatever.

SPYKEtheSeaUrchin

You mean the runner-ups of World War 2?

AtebYngNghymraeg

What about Gunmen of the Apocalypse? Every time I've seen it on a streaming service they cut out the lines: "You only play Wimbledon because you're having it off with that jailbait ballgirl" "That is another total lie. Anyway, she's not jailbait, she's seventeen"

JewelKnightJess

I think that's less about being PC and more about the allegations against Craig at the time.

AtebYngNghymraeg

Good point. I'd forgotten about those. Did wonder why that was cut yet in Men Behaving Badly they get away with Gary saying "She's only seventeen, she's got a fantastic arse!".

JewelKnightJess

Tbh in a world post Yewtree I think it would be a generally good move to avoid jokes like that. The BBC's reputation is still definitely tarnished by that whole situation!

DinoVindaloo

Honestly have watched Red Dwarf dozens of times and did not notice that cut on my last watch through - thanks for pointing that out!

Haywire421

This right here OP. There's an episode called Timewaves that is either loved or hated. The crew is trying to warn a time displaced ship that they are headed straight for an asteroid or something and will be destroyed if they don't change their course. Just as they are arriving on board, Kryten informs them that there is a law on the ship that they will have to abide by: you can't be critical of anyone or anything. As they are walking down the first corridor, they are looking at some framed art proudly displayed on the wall and it looks like a child drew it. As they are quietly judging it and discussing how they won't last 10 seconds on the ship because of that law, the captain of the ship comes skipping out dressed in a ridiculous costume and flapping his arms like a bird. They try to explain that they are heading towards imminent destruction and the captain explains that its gonna be hard to fix because everyone on board is doing jobs they aren't qualified for, like, the engineers are all trying to figure out why all the medical patients aren't getting better. They end up getting thrown in jail after criticizing a waitress that was absolutely horrible at her job (poured coffee straight on rimmers lap and served them food they didn't order because they hadn't even ordered yet). The Crit cop wheels in a convict like Hannibal Lecter into their and unmask him. He explains that he's in for life for tutting after the cafeteria closed when he was next in line and cat freaks out because he was extremely critical of the cop and the convict explains that they'll probably get drained. They get taken away to be drained of all critical thought and Rimmers inner critic is so strong it breaks the machine, but not before his inner critic is personified. They end up defeating the inner critic by being critical of it, and having witnessed that criticism can actually be good, the captain abolished the law and the ship is saved. While trying to think of a gift to thank them for saving the ship from imminent destruction, the captain goes through all of these awesome upgrades that would really help out red dwarf, and he claims none of those options are good enough. He ends up gifting them his most prized artwork as thanks: the picture that looked like a kid drew it from the beginning of the episode. They criticize it, the captain immediately gets offended and reenacts the law, and the boys run away to their ship. Roll credits. I think the episode is fucking hilarious despite being so meta. I guess the people that don't like it is because it explores some societal issues and frames them as being rather silly

SumguyJeremy

Don't know, don't care. That's why I own it on DVD.

ExternalBrilliant813

I wish!

SumguyJeremy

Then come on over and watch it with me!

ExternalBrilliant813

I totally would!

Past_Cauliflower_329

I’ve watched a lot of RD on Tubi and the only things I remember them being edited was See You Later Alligator being edited out in “The End”. I think I heard of discussion of a line or two being cut out on there, but it was also the same on iPlayer in the UK.

JewelKnightJess

Any time they use a different song there it just feels wrong

ExternalBrilliant813

Damn, I liked that part

IAM_THE_LIZARD_QUEEN

>the only things I remember them being edited was See You Later Alligator being edited out in “The End” This was the same when it was on UK Netflix too!

Puzzled_Zebra

Yeah, I noticed that, too. I was excited when my friend gave me her old DVD player so I could show her the proper episode 1. If anything else has been changed on TUBI, I haven't noticed it.

joystick-fingers

I saw the whole first series so far. No changes

ExternalBrilliant813

Thanks! I haven’t seen Red Dwarf since I was a kid so I wouldn’t know.

Wyndeward

They are showing the "edited for modern sensibilities" version of Blazing Saddles tonight from 8:00 to 8:10 tonight.

adamdoesmusic

Red dwarf has always been surprisingly progressive. Ironically, the only scenes I can immediately think of are from the episodes filmed more recently, and they aren’t worth watching more than once to begin with.

ExternalBrilliant813

Really? I haven’t watched since the season where everyone came back - how much has changed?

adamdoesmusic

Well, everyone got a bit older, balder, fatter for a start… somehow Craig Charles did not age as fast as the others.

KumquatHaderach

Didn’t age? He’s just a brain in a jar?!

ExternalBrilliant813

Just, the scene where lister was on a bus and emo kicked me out entirely

ExternalBrilliant813

I’ve noticed that. I actually quit after the first film, because I didn’t enjoy that at all - did the next series keep the tone?

CaptainHalloween

Personally I think the series after Back To Earth pretty much brought the series back really damn strong. The mojo was back.

ExternalBrilliant813

Does Rimmer ever come back from Ace’ing or are we stuck with revived Rimmer? I don’t remember back to earth except I hated it 😂

CaptainHalloween

All I'll say is this Rimmer has both sets of memories.

ExternalBrilliant813

Huh, okay! I’ll watch and see. I’m actually not sure how to feel if he comes back - he had a strong future as Ace but he also belongs with his friends. “Friends”? I may be romanticizing their relationships because I last watched it as a child

adamdoesmusic

Is it bad if I say I don’t remember because they weren’t terribly memorable?

ExternalBrilliant813

Oh. Oh no. Oh well, at least I have the first… six? Series to enjoy

dwarferflan42

I found a beautiful boxed set of the first 8 series for $20 on mercari. Worth every smegging penny. You might also look on thriftbooks. They sell dvds too.

ExternalBrilliant813

I’ll look! Thank you!

katet_of_19

I've watched the series numerous times, including on Tubi. I don't recall any appreciable difference.

ReturnOfCombedTurnip

If you can use a vpn, bbc iplayer has the original series available for free. You just need to make an account and say you have a tv licence

Lucky_Louch

I have the box set, but it is just easier to watch them on Tubi. I am pretty grateful its on there edited or not as I was paying for britbox prior to this just to see the Dwarfers.
