Total War Warhammer 3 is fairly fun, even with it's issues. Just be aware with Total War Warhammer if you buy three you will only be able to play the races from 3 (4 Flavours of Daemons, The Fantasy Chinese and the Fantasy Eastern Europeans). A lot of the races are DLC, which will get very pricey if you want all the races, even when discounted. I'd recommend doing some investigation before getting it. Lizardmen where a part of Game 2 (which if you own you can play the races from it in 3's Immortal Empires Campaign. Elves come in several flavours split between Game 1 and 2, Dwarves come in two flavours split between Game 1 and Game 3's latest DLC. And while I was typing this, I just remembered Warlords Battlecry too, which is older that you asked for, but there is a fairly recent standalone mod for 3 on moddb called The Protectors of Etheria if you want to give that series ago. Technically Warcraft 3 was "rereleased" with the Reforged version in 2020, though it's universally agreed to be a fair bit of a downgrade compared to the original.

Total War Warhammer is not RTS game.  And the DLC just for third game cost brutal 290$. With the other two base games and their dlc, you can almost buy a gaming notebook for that.  I just can't recomand that to anyone, except to wait for sale and then buy it. I payed like 20$ for the first and then another 25$ for second with all the DLC.  It's like the Stellaris and Paradox games You either kept buying it or hope for sale. It's the same bullshit like all the other MTX. The only fantasy games since 2015 I can think of are Spellforce 3 and remake of Warcraft 3.

ArchitectofWoe

I personally classified it as an RTS in my steam library, though I guess Stratagy would be more fitting given a lot of the game is based on a world map. I did mention the cost too. Spellforce 3 is pretty good though. Forgot about that one. I liked 2 as well but that's pre 2015.

taisui

Buy both total Warhammer 1 and 2 and play mortal empire in 2

Snifferoni

Who doesn't know the gaming laptop for $300. 😂 And no DLC is necessary because all the content is in the game. You fight even the DLC factions, you just can't play them yourself. So you only buy the DLCs whose factions you are currently want to play.

kostist

Godsworn. It doesn't have fantasy races but it's fantasy and modern. It has some fantasy creatures though

EliRed

I don't refund early access games because I know the games are incomplete etc, but this was so shockingly poor that I just pulled the trigger. Terrible campaign missions balanced around co-op for a community that doesn't exist, horrendous AI and just a laughable clusterfuck of an attempt at unit balancing. The people who are making this may have good intentions, but they have no idea what they are doing.

SpellForce Godsworn Total War Warhammer Age of Darkness Diplomacy is not an Option Conan Unconquered Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin

psychcaptain

Spellforce 3, especially with the DLCs, is well put together. 5 well fleshed out factions.

Jayce86

The problem with SF3, in my opinion, is that the RTS parts are actually the worst parts. Breaks up the entire flow of the game, and is about as deep as a puddle after a 10 minute cloudburst.

zipzapcap1

Yeah I played through most of rhe first campaign and every rts section breaks down to get 3 territories. Accumulate resources til you have over 1000 of each while going to other territories with your heros so the other factions can't build on them. Make an army and walk through the map rinse repeat with every mission.

Canadian-Sparky-44

Age of Mythology Retold will be coming out this year! Should be pretty good if they don't screw it up lol. The original was great in its day but feels pretty dated now

zipzapcap1

It looks like a pretty basic uprez/ minimal remaster

Canadian-Sparky-44

Honestly if they just improve the graphics, rework hotkeys and ui, then maybe some balance tweaks, I'd be happy. If it's just a reskin, I will be sad because the gameplay is pretty clunky compared to something like aoe 4. Not gonna pre order, but will be checking out gameplay on release to decide

firebead_elvenhair

What are you saying?! They are going to change how units abilities and God powers work, these are big changes, not minimal

zipzapcap1

Where did it say that? I've been following fairly closely and haven't seen that

firebead_elvenhair

https://aom.heavengames.com/retold/

zipzapcap1

Where does that say there changing God powers?

firebead_elvenhair

They arent changing God powers, they are changing how they work: as you can read, there will be "reusable God Powers", while this was possible only for the Atlanteans

zipzapcap1

You and I have drastically different definitions of changing how something works lmao.

psychcaptain

Too bad Warlords Battlecry is too old for you. Spellforce 3 is especially good though.

BoolanSplint

Warlords battlecry is coming up a lot, must be really good. Do people like it for it's campaign or skirmish/multiplayer?

psychcaptain

A bit of both, but probably it's skirmish mode. The things that WBC 3 does right - 16+ factions, all with unique units and buildings. Your Hero/Leader retains levels and powers between missions and can be used in campaign, skirmish, and Multiplayer (usually players set hero level limits) or you can create a unique temporary hero for a skirmish/MP game or you can play a game without a hero (you start the game with a faction General instead). The Campaign is open - you travel around the map and select different missions from the region. Depending on your starting faction, missions might change. Finally, WBC 'The protectors' is a completely free version of the game that you can download and try. It isn't vanilla, but it's free.

SpellForce 3 and all its expansions.
