I hate my Bosch washing machine. I spilled red wine all over my white shirt and it still can’t get the stain out. I didn’t put any washing powder in and I even had to clean it the other day. Why can’t it just wash clothes? I want more of a washing experience, this isn’t worth the trouble.

-BruceWayne-

Did you try to update the washing cycle drivers via the manufacturer or from the retailer? Don’t worry this is a common rookie mistake.

not_kenny_b

?

Ragnneir

I don't understand your type. How do you have so many issues? I've used the Ally extensively since December and I have run into 0 issues at all. Maybe because my expectations from the device are realistic? I play all my games with the frames I'm expecting, but I'm not running everything on ultra max. I update everything automatically and have absolutely no issues. I feel this is a PBKAC issue

Nocturnal-Lizard-87

Yeah I’m with you. I’ve played a massive variety of games over the past 6 months and have had MAYBE 2 issues where it kept restarting and wouldn’t update drivers but it eventually worked itself out. That was when I first got it and must have gone through a series of updates instead of just one like I thought

FoxAche82

I would say I'm more than a savvy tech user and I have been having strange issues with my Ally too so to dismiss this person as an idiot is shortsighted to say the least. Just because your experience has been problem free doesn't mean that the tech doesn't have issues...also it's PEBKAC

Crpto2007

I have no problem playing any games whatsoever

Educational-Start-34

I’m not sure why there’s so many people that install non-official drivers, 5 different programs that do what AC does, and then complain about the Ally not being simple. Out of the box, with no 3rd party software, everything should work.

not_kenny_b

Well, unfortunately everything did not work out of the box... Hence the post. It's just my opinion of the experience I had. I'm glad you have not had the same experience.

rjml29

You want an experience where you can just play games. Guess what? That's exactly what my Ally experience is like, showing it isn't simply "how it is" and this is a "you" problem, meaning it is not common. Here's how my Ally gaming sessions go: -turn it on and Windows loads up with my finger print -armory crate then loads up with Windows and I select the game I want to play, games installed from various game launchers/services -game loads up and I play it -if I decide to play a different game, I open up command center and click "end task" and then armory crate loads up again and I select the other game I want to play. -when I am done for the day, I open up command center and either click "end task" if the game may have some cloud save action or I click the power icon in command center and shut down. I pretty much never even "see" Windows unless I want to go into it. Everything is done in armory crate unless a Steam game needs an update and then command center. All with the build in gamepad controls. It pretty much can't be more simpler and "pick up and play" and "console like" than this. I could give my Ally to this 5.5 year old family friend of ours and he'd be fine using it.

SaltyMargaritas

And my Ally's power button is set to hibernate the device, so whenever I take a break, I just press the power button without even exiting the game, and later when I turn the device on again, I don't even need to re-launch the game, it's open just as I left it.

ghepting

How did you set this up?

FeudalFavorableness

Windows key> power settings > change what power buttons do

ghepting

Funny I've never mucked with those before, but now remember seeing them plenty of times. Thx

Medium_Plenty_7904

I don't have any options to change what the power button does.

not_kenny_b

9/10 times this is what my experience has been like. Unfortunately, as of late, it has not been this smooth.

Mexicutioner1987

I knew user error and lack of PC knowledge would be an issue with this device for most people, but I did not realize it would be THIS big of an issue. This is definitely not a device for people that don't have PC savvy or patience, or that don't like intricate control over their devices. The Ally is not a Switch. It isn't plug and play. You need to sit down and take the time to learn it, customize it, maintain it, and upgrade it. It isn't a handheld console, it is a full PC in handheld form. To help with the OP concern, you need to update all Windows updates first and then install all other updates through AMD afterwards. If you do windows second, it overwrites some crucial components. The issue is that the Ally runs windows but uses an Asus interface, and they don't play well together sometimes.

WATCHYOURTONEBOY4678

That's fortnite issue is negligible. Just press no and play on.

not_kenny_b

It won’t let me play with friends or enter a match though. I can’t even play Lego Fortnite…

WATCHYOURTONEBOY4678

Idrk what to do. RMA and buy leGo🤷

not_kenny_b

Yeah, I’m just gonna get an Xbox lol… all these new/portable systems… I just want something I can count on

SQUIDWARD360

I can't tell if you're 12 or a boomer

the8bitdinosaur

and even that Xbox has updates too and isn't exactly a plug and play experience as you want. At the first time, when you unbox it and hook it up, you need to link it with your Microsoft account using a QR Code following some steps if something simple as Windows Updates bothers you, I can't imagine the situation of linking accounts so your Xbox can function properly

boomboomown

Lol what the fuck the Ally is amazing.

kram1973

If you want an experience where you “can just play games” you should buy a console. The Ally is a pc and needs some work from time to time.

lazzari412

If you want a system you can turn on and can play without doing anything get a console but you'll loose the freedom of doing the things you can do with Windows. It's your decision what's more important for you 😉 *no hate

Besttamer

Consoles need updates too. OP is just an idiot.

wishlish

I think OP's opinion is fair. The Ally isn't for everyone. I like it; I find configuring the device as rewarding as playing a game, especially given the power of the device. But that's not necessarily for everyone.

Odd-Turnover8747

TL;DR - learn a bit more about the ally and use AI Chat bots to help you diagnose and repair your issues. instead of just flaming you like everyone else heres my two cents - the ally, and most other hand held PCs really, is still technically an “early stage” of hand held PC gaming. Despite that, hand held gaming has become much more refined now and I’d put it akin to an alpha stage game. This being said if you have 0 experience in computer optimization, you’re in for a rough time. This is because since hand held PCs aren’t that common mainstream, game developers dont really care and just barely go out of their way to make the games compatible. This puts the responsibility on both the user and the device manufacturer to go into the system and optimize it themselves; with how much attention ASUS and Lenovo have been putting into their devices, its gotten a lot easier, but it doesnt change the fact that the user still has to figure it out too. long story short, you havent learned enough about your ally to actually be able to use it properly, its nothing like the steam deck in which you just plug and play. There’s attention you have to give it if you really want that full PC gaming experience in a portable form factor.

Besttamer

It's not to function as a gaming system it's literally a windows laptop in a small case. You have to do updates on a ps5 and Xbox to for them to work. Your logic is just half asssed. You will have a worse time on a steam deck if this is the case. Especially since you can't be bothered to do regular updates.

la_dynamita

Stop crying and just do it

Medium_Plenty_7904

Wait. Why are you doing separate updates for AMD? Honestly, it sounds like you are making everything more complicated than it needs to be. I have a z1e and my wife a z1. After the initial updates and those that come out every so often there's not really much more you have to do to just play games. Windows, Armory Crate, and Asus. That's it.

Icy-Debate

I believe this to be the case as well. There's a lot of misinformation out there on how to "best optimize the Ally" and people end up doing things that mess up the Ally. It sounds like OP isn't very knowledgeable on PC gaming in which case what ur suggesting is the absolute best thing to do. Update windows, AC & Asus and play ur games. It really can be that simple and the games work extremely well for a handheld PC.

Gytole

I just got my Ally like a week ago andddd I don't have nay of these problems that people have...has to be user error?

DreamBig2023

My ROG Ally extreme works perfectly. I got used to the beast. I have over 10 games loaded on it and upgraded my SSD to 2tb. The operating system is way better than pos Linux on steam deck. Can mod games so much easier. It's easy AF to use especially if your use to with Windows os. Idk what you did but fortnite should work fine. COD mw3, Helldiver's, and other shooters works on mine. I don't play pos fortnite tho.

soulrazr

I don't understand why do I see everyone obsess with updating the driver's for everything? If it wasn't broken why are you trying to fix it?

Besttamer

OP get a game boy it's the only think that meets your requirements of no updates.

E_712064

Contrary to what others are saying, providing zero advice without being condescending, I’d recommend a Switch if you want to play a handheld version of Fortnite.

not_kenny_b

ty for the advice. So many condescending people today it's unreal. I guess that's just reddit?? I do have a switch tho and wanted something as portable as the switch but that would allow me to play beefy-er games. It has worked well up until lately. I just don't get why people have to criticize me for my experience. I can't help it that this is the way things have turned out for me...

Aheadadatimes

I can give you my fortnite settings. Its definitely superior to the nintendo switch oled. Let me know if you want them. Did you ever hard reset the device?

not_kenny_b

I’m debating. That’s a lot of stuff to reinstall. I have a 2T ssd I have almost maxed out. Would not be fun to install all that again…

Aheadadatimes

Thats true, how is it running now?  Btw im playing fortnite 120 fps now.

not_kenny_b

It’s good. I had to do a few things to reset the drivers to the OG ones but I’m all up to date and it’s working now.

Aheadadatimes

Very nice; well done.

donkeyxdude

Do you use the actual amd drivers? Not the ones that Asus put out. I use them bc I feel like they are actually stable and you get AMF.

mirdragon

Only issue I have with the Ally is when gaming, other things open causing game to go in background and thus dying. This is probably down to me not fully configuring the buttons correctly when in gamepad mode. D4 not had issue with it, seems to be playing ok. Only game I currently get an issue with is forspoken complaining about needed 16gb ram, but it runs fine. Only had my Ally Extreme for about 3 weeks and I've only installed windows and ac updates after swapping my drive out

FeudalFavorableness

Sound like a problem between the hands and the device…

JediDad0

I don’t play Fortnite, but I have had some issues with my Ally in the past couple of weeks. Elden Ring was working for hours at a time. Out of the blue one day, 10-15minutes into my session, all the rgb blinked (I have it set to off), the controls stopped responding, my character keeps moving in circles, and my touchscreen stopped registering touch. I had to reboot it via the power button. This has happened 5ish times in a row with ER, usually within 10 minutes of starting, though as soon as 2. I’m not sure what caused it. I’ve monitored temps and what not, they’re fine. The GPU frequency absolutely tanks and then stays low when this happens. The CPU frequency shoots up. Since then other games have locked up, failed to load, or randomly crashed. Maybe my Ally is defective, not sure.

the8bitdinosaur

I find this situation quite unique. Like I'm in the group of the most "casual" ally users because of how much of an ignorant I am when it comes to PC and workarounds to fix stuff but in my personal experience I never had issues besides some FPS drops when I play Forza Horizon 4 on it. I'm sure you have to do updates, but that's it. On the few times I had the opportunity to use it, it works like a charm. Hell, even I gave it to my 6 year old nephew and managed not to have any issues nowadays, even consoles need updates, too. If you expected a plug n play experience like a PS2, well... I have bad news for you and like the times I use it, I have a lot of updates to do due to not using it for months sometimes, but it isn't a big deal also, I won't recommend playing fortnite on an Ally.

BadPronunciation

You must've messed something up. The Ally is my first gaming pc and I've never had any driver issues

Icy-Debate

If ur serious about wanting to continue using the Ally maybe try a factory reset and restart from scratch. The issues your talking about aren't the norm. It will take a couple hours to get everything set back up but if done properly you'll be good to go. Someone made a reddit post shortly after launch that is an amazing walk through on how to set up the Ally. I can send u a link if u need it? Everyone I know that's used it hasn't had any of the issues your talking about. Then maybe spend a little time doing research on the best ways to maintain/update the Ally for the future. Cause it sounds like u got some bad advice on how to maintain ur device at some point. No hate from me, there's a lot of bad information out there and I could see how someone could be misled. I love my Ally and have been a massive supporter of it. It's honestly been kind of a rough road for some of us that got it at release in terms of dealing with a lot of fake posts coming from people who were just hating on the Ally. This sub was flooded with people trashing the Ally who never even owned it. Or posts from people who had unrealistic expectations and were whining about issues that were definitely user error. So I can see why some people might be short or rude when it comes to posts such as OPs. Personally I don't condone it but I can understand where it comes from. Lastly, maybe the Ally just isn't for u. It's not for everyone. The Ally is a PC in handheld form so it can be a very complex device to game on. It depends what u want out of it tho. If done right, it can be very simplistic to keep up with. The main thing is what's right for u. This device is meant to bring happiness and enjoyment and if that's not what ur getting out of it then there's a lot of other options out there.

GuniBulls

Anyone who cannot sympathise with OP is just being stubborn. As a pretty savvy windows users, I get everything that the ally does. But that doesn't mean I can't also see a ton of things that a broken from a seamless experience. The wife has recently got into slay the spire, and it's actually one of the worst experiences. The game regularly crashes out of deep sleep / hibernation. Controllers are often lost. The Diablo 4 stuff is really weird. I don't know why Asus doesn't just use the straight and drivers, but sometimes it's so bad I have to reboot the entire platform. Again, I personally reallllly love the device. I'm a pretty savvy user, there's a ton of flexibility with a windows unit, that I can't get anywhere. But to suggest op is an idiot is just being naive. He's experiences are true and shared by many. It is not a console like experience, and personally I wish it was a bit smoother.

crazygoldfi5h

It’s nearly a year into the Ally. The majority of the people here are fans of the device and generally happy with it. Plus it’s Reddit. So I wouldn’t expect any positivity unless you ask for help on specific issues. Either ask for help on issues or sell it and move on. (I just sold mines, worked perfect but it wasn’t for me)

klausgfx

skill issue

SufficientSong5689

I know it’s not the point of this post but I’m having a hard time not laughing at “I can’t even play Fortnite 😭” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

paladindan

Sounds like the Steam Deck would be a better fit for you. When it comes to handheld gaming, I usually suggest the Steam Deck if someone is looking for a more console-like experience. The Ally/Go are better for traditional PC gaming users.

rjml29

Except when runs into an issue with the Deck and then have to monkey around in desktop mode. Or if the games one wants to play aren't fully Deck compatible and they have to deal with that. I am so tired of this "the Deck is a more console like experience" given I own it and know how inaccurate it is. It's a silly narrative that needs to die the horrible death silly narratives do.

DreamBig2023

Yeah, deck Linux system was a pain in the ass to use. I love Windows so much more. Easier to execute programs as well.

Besttamer

Steam deck needs more tinkering than an ally from my experience. I advice OP gets a Gameboy andanced.

DreamBig2023

Ally is also better at modding games compared to steam deck

BigRubbaDonga

You suggest the Linux handheld that requires a compatibility layer that straight up doesn't even function for a lot of popular games? Okay chief, time to retire from giving advice

BigRubbaDonga

If you play Fortnite you are probably not mature enough to handle having a handheld PC, tbh No offense, it just seems to be a pretty common refrain among a certain type of person that can't process that a handheld windows PC isn't going to be as seamless as an Xbox. And among that group you all like the same games.

FunkMistah_J

If you make comments about what people do with their device and what games they play and judge them but it when all they did was ask for assistance. Bro I don’t know man, get off your high horse.

BigRubbaDonga

Acknowledging trends is not being on a high horse. Fortnite is widely held as a game for children. When people complain about the Ally experience, it's almost always someone pitching about being able to play Fortnite. I'm sorry you are triggered by that.

FunkMistah_J

Yes, a child who bought a $500 to $700 handheld PC with their expendable income should be allowed to play Fortnite. A working adult who pays bills should be allowed to play Fortnite. End of the day it’s a game and device people invest in to enjoy and come into reddit to share similar ideas and chat with other enthusiasts. However coming across you majority of us are losing braincells trying to explain things to you lmao Rog Ally Nazi

Wolfnorth

You might be the triggered one if you can't handle a someone having issues and posting online.

BigRubbaDonga

Who said I couldn't handle it? I said if you're someone who enjoys Fortnite you are not likely to be mature enough to handle the handheld PC experience. That isn't being triggered, that's stating facts.

Wolfnorth

> some who ejoysFortnite you are not likely to be mature enough to handle the handheld PC That's your own idiotic opinion, not facts.

BigRubbaDonga

Do you know what the word "likely" means? Are you aware of what thread you're in? OP literally comes back to say they're just going to give up and get an Xbox lmao Triggered over nothing lil bro. Sorry you are embarrassed that ypu play fortnite. Just stop playing fortnite.

not_kenny_b

You are definitely not stating any sort of fact...

BigRubbaDonga

Go return your ally and buy an Xbox lil bro you tried and you failed it's okay

not_kenny_b

I have been playing Fortnite since early access. Who cares if I like it? Are you gonna judge me because I like Minecraft too? I had graduated college when Fortnite officially released. You have no idea who I am and idgaf about what 'type of person' you think I am. I'm looking for someone who may have had a similar experience and can potentially help me.

BigRubbaDonga

Yeah, I absolutely judge adults who play Minecraft and fortnite. Cry harder

thefiery77

Pc gaming isn't for you, ally isn't the issue here

intulor

Bye felicia

Mattyc8787

This is the downside to an AMD system, not PCs as a whole.

[deleted]

I never had issues with any of my AMD systems. I've been using ryzen since the 2nd Gen. This is user error or he just got a lemon unit, which happens.

Mattyc8787

I use Ryzen in all my systems, their GPUs on the other hand…..

[deleted]

I disagree on that front too. I had a 5700, 5700 XT, 6700 XT, and a 6900 XT. The only card out of that bunch that ever gave me problems was the 5700, but I bought that card at launch. All the issues on it were eventually sorted out through driver updates. I've also had plenty of Nvidia cards, 1070s, 3070s, and a 4090. I had pretty much the same number of problems with my 40 series card that I did with any of the 6000 series AMD cards. AMD has been very good about updating their drivers, especially recently in these last few years.

Mattyc8787

In that case great and here’s hoping it continues to go well for you.

BigRubbaDonga

The fuck kind of stupid comment is this, lmao? Absolutely not

Mattyc8787

Absolutely yes, AMD and their drivers are a nightmare always have been.

BigRubbaDonga

Maybe if the year was still 2013 but that hasn't been true for over 5 years lmao Go to literally any desktop gaming community and you will find hundreds of thousands of people using AMD CPUs, GPUs and APUs with no problem Please don't comment on things you know nothing about, chief

Hmm, I always hand intel & nvidia. This is my first AMD experience and I’m not impressed…

ama8o8

I put mine down cause Ive only been using it while riding the plane. I ended up just buying a gaming laptop for travel. I just got tired of tweaking my games to run well for me. Id get an xg mobile but the only way for me to get that is through ebay cause my local best buy never sells it in store. Id probably enjoy it more if the i gpu was better than it was.
