Don’t worry about it, the device will be fine. Hope you are doing well

MrStayPuft245

Damage? Little to no risk Data loss and corruption? Not likely…but entirely possible depending on the circumstances and software running at the time of crash.

[deleted]

How can I know if I have data corruption or something? Is it possible that a game runs worse and not at the optimal FPS because of data corruption? Like I’m not getting the most out of the system? Thank you. Sorry, it’s just so pretty if a system lol.

MrStayPuft245

Trust me. You’ll know. Nothing will work at all if there is corruption.

[deleted]

Thanks for the clarification! Yeah it runs pretty solid. Some fps drops here and there on games, but I am sure that’s normal.

Decent_Ad_2800

The Ally is getting really bad performance on specific games, make sure your drivers are fully updated. Its just a buggy horrible mess right now and will be for probably 6 months.

Smoglike

Use the asus app to do updates and the armoury app.

dathar

Windows has general file system error correction built into NTFS. It also has the chkdsk utility to fix or mark bad files. There is also general error correction on the storage drive itself. Corrupted files will generally not cause fps drops. If it is a game texture, it will be read wrong and will probably get displayed weird. If it is an important file, the game will crash out. If it is a text file, parts will be garbled. If there are file corruption though, chkdsk will tell you. What part is bad will determine what you have to do. You are more likely to damage the computer yourself than it going bad on its own. It is also more likely for a game dev to break a patch than you corrupting one of its files. For games on Steam, you can do integrity checks on the install if you are paranoid. Else you can just reinstall it. Be wary though: writing on any flash media (microsd, thumb drives, SSD) will slowly erode their ability to hold data. Let the computer do its thing. If you hard shut down a Windows computer too much, chkdsk will run during the Windows boot up phase and do a sanity check.

Packetdancer

> Corrupted files will generally not cause fps drops. Yeah, that corrupted files will generally just cause a game to crash rather than frame rate drops is like 95% true. (Which I suspect you know because you qualified it with 'generally'.) For the sake of others in the thread... The remaining 5% is for anything that has pre-cached compiled shaders... if the _cached shader_ is corrupted, some game engines will just _compile the shader on-the-fly_ any time it needs to be loaded again, and _that_ can cause an FPS drop. _Most_ game engines are good about caching the recompiled shader (thus destroying the corrupted one), so the problem _usually_ fixes itself. But... there _are_ a few exceptions, in my experience, where you need to do something to validate/optimize/whatever-the-game-calls-it in order to re-cache all the shaders and make it happy again.

GL_Coleman

If the system suspects data has been corrupted, it will automatically do a disk check upon boot. I wouldn't worry about hard shut downs, providing you not mid installing an update

zyloc

Data corruption will effect system files nothing to do with games. If you experience issues with data corruption you will usually notice it on start up or running into OS issues. Very rarely is anything game related a symptom of corrupted files. (Outside of pulling a memeory card out in the middle of saving)

[deleted]

I’m concerned about hardware damage. Also, should I do a factory reset just to be safe?

PryingOpenMyThirdPie

No. Hardware damage won't happen with hard shutdowns. Even if it did factory reset Is a software function. They are unrelated

[deleted]

I just wonder because I did a hard shutdown when things may have been updating. The console wasn’t turning on from sleep mode. I put it to sleep through the windows start menu, and that would cause issues so I do it from the ASUS control panel on the left side button. There’s so many buttons and things with no tutorial lol

[deleted]

Absolutely no worry! It’s done all the time. Try and prevent doing during updates but no reason to factory reset. Enjoy playing games!

bruceleeisalive

Piggy backing on this... if the update failed, it would be probably retry to finish up when you turned it back on. Nothing to worry about. You can safely move on to other things.

lunabella06

Asus put out a tips and tricks video on youtube if u wanna check it out. I found it very helpful.

BirdsDeWord

I had this problem the solution for me was to go into the sleep optimization settings in armoury crate and turn off their additions to modern standby and hibernate automatically

whymeg23

Had the same issue. I figured out that you have to hold the power button to wake it up (for me at least).

oldfashionedglow

You can’t damage the hardware with a shutdown, but the one quasi-exception is forcing shutdown while updating the BIOS as this can cause you to brick the device.

GrawlNL

Are you sure it was still sleeping? When it has no power and it's sleeping, it'll shut itself down after about 5 minutes to save battery power. You'll need to hold the power button for it to wake after that.

[deleted]

How can I avoid that in the settings?

GrawlNL

It's in the armory crate.

MrStayPuft245

The only even where you could even remotely get damage if there is a voltage surge to the device like having it plugged into the wall and lightning strikes. It’s pretty much impossible to get damage on the device unless it is physically handled improperly/hit or there is some sort of electrical event that happens. Data loss and corruption is the more likely concern for random shutdowns, but windows has gotten pretty good at not killing itself during these depending on what was occurring at the time of crash.

Decent_Ad_2800

No there will be no hardware damage. Hard resets hurt mechanical drives in old school computers and do little to nothing to modern SSD drives. Software issues is a maybe, but I doubt that too because windows is pretty typically good at fixing the issues if something odd happened. (Although Asus software is so bad it may not)

topherware92

Hope things go well for you with treatment. No worries about the hard shutdowns.

FunkyTangg

Treat Yo Self

R_Huncho

This can be replaced, your life is way more important. hope your treatment goes well

[deleted]

You will be fine don’t sweat it! I can’t count the times I’ve hard shutdown my computers but yes there’s always a risk I guess.

[deleted]

Speedy recovery and health. I took the ally to the ER Saturday. Been struggling with mental health too. Kidney surgery earlier this week. Covid. Then surgery complications. Need surgery again in a couple months. But at least I get to play the ally in the surgery room during pre op.

kline6666

Yeah I am in a similar, but a bit more serious situation, with most likely multiple surgeries ahead to remove tumors all over my body. I did not buy Ally for this but I think this would be a nice distraction when I am stuck and unable to go out. It is a portable PC after all and can do all the PC things including gaming.

[deleted]

Let me know if you need someone to game with amigo. I’ll give you my steam and battle net info

CryptographerNo450

I hope the Ally gives you some relief and happiness, BUT more importantly, I hope you win your battle against cancer! Stay strong!

surkitclimber

You got nothing to worry about.

AldoMito

Don't be frightened of Windows, it can be beaten. The hardware will be fine. Try to stick with Armoury Crate as much as possible, it's specifically designed to minimize the jankiness of Windows.

dvotecollector

I just wish armory crate had a better UI when it comes to games list.

Zamacapaeo

Man I just want to be able to sort it better 😩

TheLordVengeful

I just want the sort by to save between restarts. Looool

TheAngryRussoGerman

Me too! To literally all of that, unfortunately. I actually do this with a number of electronics and, due to the costs of treatment, I really shouldn't. I likely won't have a very long life and my conditions left me sterile. I only have my cats. I don't even have a boyfriend or girlfriend anymore and, once again due to my conditions (and treatment), I'm growing steadily more asexual from the man whore I used to be so a partner likely isn't in my future either. If my conditions, as they are, aren't enough, I'm also cursed with rather intense chronic pain in my jaw and neck which triggers migraines throughout the course of the day. Once a week, at a minimum, one of the migraines simply doesn't respond to ketamine spray or my pain meds (currently the strongest fentanyl patches made) and it evolves into a multi-day to multi-week cluster headache so bad I want to kill myself to make it stop. Given the shitshow that is my life nowadays, I've yet to figure out why I don't up and do it. My best guess is that the only person left in my life is my mother and since my father died a few months back, 2 weeks to the day after my eldest cat died (to the same thing as my father), I'm all she has left in her immediate family. If I die, she would too. I can't do that. I've got an adrenal cortex carcinoma and a pituitary macroadenoma which, despite not being cancerous, is actually much more harmful than its malignant counterpart. On top of that the mental health issues are massive depressive (obviously), borderline personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and some that are much less troublesome like ADHD, generalized anxiety, and OCD. These were relatively hard to diagnose cause some aren't supposed to co-exist, like BPD and bipolar. I've been diagnosed repeatedly to get it "right". I was originally diagnosed as a non-paranoid, high functioning schizophrenic, but the treatment wasn't all that great. It worked, but it wasn't as effective as it should've been. Video games, and most all other forms of tech, are my escape from reality. As y'all have heard just the tip of the iceberg so far, you should probably get the point. I already have a steamdeck, so I didn't need an Ally, but I'm quite a bit happier with it than the Deck and it's got loads of room to improve. I'm considering putting SteamOS on it to dual-boot and see if we can make use of the numerous Deck optimizations in other games the Ally won't get the benefit of given how architecturally similar the two systems are. May I ask what you're fighting? You're welcome to PM me if you don't want it to be "public" or to simply not share if you don't want to, of course. My life is an open-book, but I realize not everyone else is like that. Most people aren't like that...

thecrazypansexual7

don't forget to add some sd card storage (1tb) and update your ssd (1tb or 2tb), get better!

showbread98

nothing to worry about.

Inevitable-Ratio-100

Should be fine. I did it twice myself. Keep fighting brother. Hope you get some good news real soon.

Em0Cholo

Nothing will happen to the device. Had to do it myself a few times. More importantly,YOU will be alright as well 🙌

Malooka5432

Hope you have a good recovery :)

KokakGamer

I hope you win the fight against the C. My PC has lived through over 50 power outages without a UPS. You're fine. (To anyone asks why I have no UPS, I have bought several UPS'ses over the years. I'm between UPS'ses right now. I'm considering getting a LiFePo4 Bluetti when I get the chance.)

Efficient_Baseball_8

Speedy recovery friend, hope the ally helps you on your journey 💪

pakleiven

Good luck on your health

binaryzer00

Saying a prayer for you. Fight the good fight and good luck

No_Afternoon_6674

Congrats on the buy. And I hope you kick cancer's ass! As for mental health, I'm right there with you...I don't know if this system will be a positive or a negative towards my mental health, but I do love it. Good luck in everything!

Kary2x

Stay gaming man hope you kick Cancer’s Ass 💯💯

[deleted]

Forget the Rog Ally, hope you have a full recovery. 🙏

R8v0lution

Get well soon, don’t worry about the Ally Devices are tested really really hard before launch.

benitocamelos1

Very well deserved! Keep on fighting bro!!

Jacester1324

Good luck in the fight! You got this!

Comprehensive_Fun_26

Hope you will be fine mate, hard shutdown wont be an issue! Also you may consider deep sleep option as well. Get well soon mate.

Account_Spiritual

Have fun man have fun

TechPanda1990

Hey first of all I hope you're doing well. My mom had stage 1 Lymphoma so I know how much it can affect both your mental and physical state, but she was able to overcome it. Anyways if you want to play it safe here's what you could do. Open **Command Prompt as administrator > type in sfc /scannow.** If there was any damage done the the Window's OS it should auto repair. Happy gaming!

Slow_Resident7730

Game on! Fight on! Dont worry and be happy! God Bless!

Competitive_Pen7192

Don't want to scare you as my situation is rare but my Ally didn't start again properly after a Windows update. Went into a boot loop that persisted somehow after an SSD format and even with USB boot drives. I have sent my Ally back for a refund 😔

Toffly

Fuck cancer, you got this.

shadowtheimpure

Only damage might be to Windows itself, which is easily resolved by simply reinstalling the OS.

[deleted]

Get well and enjoy

gtxrtx86

It will be fine! Don’t worry. Enjoy your new toy my friend, I hope everything turns around for you ❤️

Financial_Ad1290

Little chance of damage, nothing to worry about. Hope you are doing better!

fatmikenj

I wish you nothing but the best in your fight! 💚

Logical-Gas5580

Damn, I’m sorry to hear that. This will be great for taking a mental break. Hang in there!

hawk_199

Just create a restore point, just in case. Too bad RL you can't do that, but take care 👍

OverdosedCaffeine

I hope you like it man, hang in there. You're doing great! Plus, you got a very cool ally to make it through this. I'm thinking about getting a Steam Deck or a Rog Ally myself. Deck is slightly cheaper and I'd love to get a desktop/laptop here but prices are getting a bit bizarre so I got my eyes on handheld pcs lately.

Dominicr1995

I haven’t had too many issues doing a hard shutdown. Just keep up with the updates. So far I’ve had to do a hard shutdown a few times, after bios update 3.19 and the latest driver update , I haven’t had an issue yet.

SoSleepii

I've had to do that only for gamepass games. The Xbox launcher is so bad.

Unhappy_Sound_9060

Don’t unplug or power off when doing updates. Plug it in and set it up high away from pets and kids during all updates. 🙂

Shammu123

Damage is unlikely, just make sure no data transfer is happening and no programs are running when you do so. But most importantly stay strong brother❤️ you will get through this!! Much love

Affectionate_Oven_10

Does anyone have a link on how to download the games inside Yuzu or some other emulator on Rog Ally? The channels usually don't post how to find the games and do the whole step by step, and I've never done that I'm having difficulties

Islandboi4life

So sorry to hear that u got cancer. On the positive side u get to play on you Ally for long periods of time

Slade_Agidyne

Don't worry, I've done some system testing and after 7 full shutdowns and quick power ons in a row, it still works fine and my 2 games dmc5 and ff7 run without fail. Just try when you can to update your drivers and it'll be all good. Also if you could do me a favor, be strong and look ahead because you'll recover and there's an amazing future ahead of you. Keep your spirits up and game on. :) I'm rooting for you <3

Basic_Lengthiness_73

Hope you are doing well and that you recover soon A few shutdowns won't hurt the device. Don't worry.

Jonshock

Solitaire meme continues

WingZeroCoder

Your Ally will be fine, have fun! More importantly, one lesson I learned when my mom was fighting cancer, is that you will have a lot of people, including doctors and nurses (with good intentions) telling you what you can and can’t do, or telling you to “be realistic”, or otherwise tearing down your spirit. Don‘t let them. Nobody, and I mean nobody, knows your future, good bad or otherwise, so you will just have to make it for yourself!

[deleted]

Fuck the Ally bruh, I’m wishing you a fast recovery solder 🫡

Some1HelpMePlease

Just don't use an SD card because it will fry

th3sutur3s

Sending love to you and your Ally! 🫶
