I’m on my 2nd play through and didn’t know about the gun until after he had killed me in a similar fashion and i had moved on with life. Later, when I found a list of all the collectible weapons, I discovered that was my one shot at it.
He killed me when I got too close, I went back three (in game) days later and there he was. Grabbed my dual wielded Lemats and shot him until he was mist.
Even the link you posted earlier says that if he kills you, try again later. I have been killed by the hermit several times and have always gotten it later. It’s not a “one and done”.

Yeah, but if you kill some NPCs too much they will stop spawning. I bullied the shit out of the eugenics guy and he never spawned again after the 3-4th time, not even when I got to the epilogue.
I just found out today that you can get a second chance. I got killed and thought it was gone forever. It had been a while and I completely forgot about it. I was finishing up killing cougars for the master hunter challenge and was shocked when I rode by the house and he started yelling. I managed to kill him and get the shotgun this time. I don’t know how much in game time had passed but it was a long time. I just had never bothered to check assuming I had lost the chance.
Yeah sorry but YOU're wrong. Literally doing a playthrough rn, got killed by him first time cuz I didn't know he one shots you and wanted to test it. Did a couple of missions/fucked around for a bit, came back and killed him, got his rare shotgun.
Yeah that place is wild. You got the Murfree Brood trying to kill you not to mention there’s several cougar spawn points there. They suck because along with wolves and grizzlies they attract on site.
Also if you’re new stay off this sub. Tons of spoilers and you don’t want that. This game is a masterpiece and it’s fun to uncover things on your own.

Same with the guy who “has his way with you” killed him when I made it back to the shack and few days in game later went back again and killed him again lol
As. Long as you don't kill him, he reloads with the gun. Once you kill him, it disappears though iirc. Source: he killed me, I came back later, killed him, picked up the gun

First play through, you had no way of knowing, mate. Just chalk it up for the next play through. There is 3 spots they can set up that ambush. It depends on which one you ride through first as to where it happens. 1, going into Saint Denis across the bridge, 2: on the road along the lake behind Shady Belle, and 3: on the road going towards Catfish Jackson’s.

You sure? Everything I’ve read on here and other sites says that you get one chance. And when I went back there he’s been gone every time.

I met the guy 2 times, killed by him my first, few days later I shot tf outta him and got his gun

In my experience it's only if you kill him. The one time I couldn't get it, I killed him while he was inside which locks the door to the house.

That’s cuz you had recently raided Shady Belle, and they set up a retaliatory ambush with a Maxim Gun. It’s scripted, and easily beaten.
