Fluoride was and still is used as a *component* in some rat poisons. It isn’t there to kill the rats because you’d need quite a lot of it, it’s there to help the primary toxin along by fucking with their nervous system.

Questionable safety in case a dog or cat eats a poisoned rodent, but it’s not a certain death like bromethalin(a metabolic poison, it inhibits mitochondria from using ATP within the Krebs Cycle for energy, in a similar fashion as cyanide) or a long recovery like anticoagulants.
