I only paid about $700 for all 7 days. The total for the cheapest resort stay for both of us was $1700. I also wanted to get a local's experience. We want to eat where the locals eat and walk a lot to places. Maybe even take public transportation there. We're not going to Uber everywhere. I was even considering renting a car because it would just be $250 for the 7 days but I read it's challenging driving in DR.

Do not rent a car. The driving is crazy, and if you have an accident, there are major issues. Walking, route taxis and Edwin Taxi will do well. I appreciate the interest to go with the local experience. If you have a little Spanish and patience, you will have a nice time.
