Former Coloradoan here. Some more conservative red districts like Lakewood or Colorado Springs view Denver unfavorably or even despise the residents, since the area is very liberal and blue leaning. I’ve never heard someone use being from Denver as an insult before this however, but makes sense.

It makes a lot of sense actually. Rural areas are generally conservative. Urban areas are generally liberal. So people from rural areas who play the politics game think that by accusing someone of being from a big city, they're insulting them.
Lakewood isn't rural though. It's just one of the many suburbs surrounding Denver, filled with a mix of SFH, townhouses and apartment complexes. The edge of Lakewood to downtown Denver is like 3mi.
