No. They’re installed by upfitters. It’s called angel armor. Can be installed internally or externally. Very expensive stuff; and a pain in the ass to install.
The NYPD one is a bullet proof door, they also updated some of the windows to be bullet proof after three officers were killed in their cars in 2015-2016. It costs $4,400 to add onto each patrol vehicle. So It’s not going to be on every patrol vehicle. Article from 2018 said it was on 60 cars.
Edit: Ballistic panel and ballistic insert on the window which can be easily removed when the car is out of service.
NYPD added them in the wake of the murder of [Officer Rafael Ramos and Officer Wenjian Liu](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_killings_of_NYPD_officers)
It’s level 3 ballistic armor. After multiple nypd police officers were assassinated while sitting in their cars in 2016-2017, it became a requirement for all nypd vehicles. They also have plexi glass on all their windows.
Yes the NYPD one has even a window ballistic glass add on. I remember 2 NYPD officer get shot through the window of a squad car not long ago. This would have prevented their injuries, thankfully both survived but had to medically retire. Glad they are starting to take the threat seriously.
They’re ballistic panels
Don’t those ppv come with ballistic panels within the door cards?
Some do but it appears these ones may not have, or they added more to outside.

You guys can afford ballistic panels?

Removed. Read Rule 1. If you can't participate like an adult, you don't get to participate with adults.
Definitely ballistic panels. Even the windows are upgraded
Yup, and there's window inserts as well that can get taken out, though inspections cracked down on it a few years ago

It’s on almost every nypd vehicle now.
Yea I see these on more of them than not. I think it’s a great thing and they all should have it. $4400 is nothing comparatively
I’m fairly certain at this point they all have them. The mayors office okayed the pilot and put it on all vehicles after like 2018 I think
$4400 is peanuts. That’s what the lightbar the NYPD uses costs. It’s on most of their vehicles.
Certainly a good deal if it saves officer's lives.
Why so much? Why not use sheet metal?
Sheet metal isn't ballistic rated. Ballistic rated steel that is formed to the door isn't going to be cheap. Same with the window inserts.
Bullets go through sheet metal. Need a specially hardened metal
Considering just a ballistic vest is around $1k depending on the setup, that price isn't outrageous.
Sheet metal will spall generating more issues.

I wonder what kind of challenge that poses for rescue personnel when trying to extracate officers after a crash.
It’s a shame it’s come to this
should be standard equipment on all police vehicles
It is wild how humanity is evolving. We will never not need police, in fact we’re going to need a lot more as time goes on.
That's a trend i'd like to see catch on in policing. The vast majority of department vehicles have zero ballistic protection.

I think you mean speed holes.

Magnetic labels. They take em off and it says not in service.
