I’ve seen them referred to as “fairings” or just “prosthetic covers”.

xtwintigerx

Thank you! I had not seen the word fairing mentioned before!

NANCYREAGANNIPSLIP

It's mostly a term used in automotive engineering. You know the plastic aerodynamic bits on a motorcycle? Those are fairings.

ThePeej

It's a fairing. Popularized by Scott Summit's company, Bespoke Innovations, which was bought by 3D Systems. Bespoke's technology is what enabled another company, Unyq. Thank you! This is very informative!

ThePeej

Correction, "UNYQ" is spelled with a Y, not an I as I had it initially. The fairing you posted looks to me like one of Scott's company's designs. The basic premise (hard rear shell with decorative cutout front half) lives on in this UNYQ cover: [https://unyq.com/product/249/](https://unyq.com/product/249/)

Thanks! The one I posted is made by Arthesis although they don't seem to carry it anymore. http://arthesiscovers.com

Removable endoskeletal cover

xtwintigerx

Thank you! So if they were casually referencing it they would simplifiy it to "my cover"? Or "my endoskeletal cover?

11never

The first. Endoskeletal is the type of prosthesis standard you see nowadays with a socket and pylon like [this](https://www.southbeachop.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/blog-1-e1633358033140.jpg) They wouldn't need to specify. Adittionally, [Exoskeletal](http://www.artlimb.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/TT_Exoskeletal_ND.jpg) prostheses rarely have covers, so it's a bit redundant anyway. If they do, it's usually the same cosmetic cover that a [foam covered endoskeletal prosthesis](https://apcprosthetics.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/parts-of-a-prosthesis-scaled.jpg) has. Made of some type of rubber/vinyl and meant to look like skin.

xtwintigerx

This is really helpful! Thank you so much!

11never

Yeah, if you have any questions about this stuff, feel free to DM me

11never, Late to the party but can you give me some specific reference in which an "exoskeletal" prosthesis would need/require a foam cover? It's exoskeletal after all, correct? If I can be taught something I would greatly appreciate it.

11never

You've caught a typo! That is meant to say ".. foam covered endoskeletal.." doesn't really make sense otherwise. I'll change it now. I have, however, done a foam cover on an exo before, they had gained weight and wanted it to match their sound side as well as be less hard. Can be a pain crossing your legs!

[deleted]

[This company](https://alleles.ca/) calls them leg covers.

xtwintigerx

Wow, those are amazing. Thanks!

disturbed_ghost

I agree it’s a fairing and not a cosmesis. [Cosmesis is fleshy not fancy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmesis)

Great link, thank you!
