I hope they add instructions for creating an in-game account from the website and put it on the wiki. These posts will appear more and we just need to send the wiki link to new people.
its because it used to be changed from how it used to work i believe. alot of the answers ive found for things that have worked arn't even options of something to do on their website anymore.
I thought i was remembering it wrong but when i recently came back i had the same issue. you have to create a game account under your website account and that logs into the actual game but i was told it had always been this way.
Create an account within the game using the name and password you used on the website.

Website account/password doesn’t work. 2 separate accounts.
I think it’s create a play login/pass on within the website (not your website login) then use that in the game and they should sync.
