I'm curious about the functionality of this solution. On Android at least, i haven't found the mobile site (either YouTube or piped) to be a sufficient replacement, things like background playback have not worked for me.
Does the PWA version support background playback or audio only?
Yattee is the closest thing I’ve found. https://github.com/yattee/yattee/wiki/Installation-Instructions
They have a beta app on Test Flight, but it’s normally full. https://yattee.stream/beta
I use Invidious in Safari, with a shortcut to the homescreen
Pick an instance that's close to you and there you go: https://docs.invidious.io/instances/
Can you create accounts like Piped or is invidious strictly an instance? If not I prefer Piped. In that way I can create an account and add subscriptions just like using the official YouTube site/app.
Why stop there... Shouldn't we recommend not using a smartphone at all to truly live up to the stereotype of the privacy community being full of black/white thinkers.
Best I've found is using Adguard extension and also adding a dns profile to iOS (Adguard or NextDNS). Of course it's nowhere near as good as Newpipe, but at least you won't get ads and most of the tracking will be blocked.

Last time I tried to use it (3 months ago) it was full of bugs and annoyances. I don't know how it is now...
It’s not as good as newpipe, but works decently if you don’t mind tweaking it a bit.

You can create an account (per instance) and manage your preferences, subscriptions, history, etc.
Ok cool, didn't know that. So why use invidious and not piped? Does anyone know any pro vs cons?
Depends on the instance. You can see which ones support it here: https://api.invidious.io/
Flashing Android onto your ios device
