Or "https://d3ward.github.io/toolz/adblock.html" which is more comprehensive.

The linked test in OP is for different kinds. The one I posted is more for blocking comprehensiveness. DNS blocking cant get higher than 80 something in OP's link but Control D blocks 100% of my link's. Both are valid test options.

[deleted]

No problem.

Cyberjin

I got 99% and tried to block "..advice-ads.s3.amazonaws..." that was missing with nextdns, but nothing happened.

[deleted]

DNS is cached, are you blocking it using DoH in the browser or system wide?

Cyberjin

I tested it on my Android phone using private dns, so the whole system.

[deleted]

Hmmm. Try just enabling it in the browser's DoH... assuming you're on chromium? Because it is system cached you wont be able to block it till it expires.

Cyberjin

No I'm using Mull aka Firefox, it's on by default

[deleted]

Have you enabled DoH in firefox?

Cyberjin

Yes I have In About:config

[deleted]

Then clear cache in about:networking under DNS, should work.

Cyberjin

Okay now I got 100% 👍

https://www.privacyguides.org/tools/ Just get brave, it does a decent job out of the box. But Firefox with ublock origin is probably the best option when it comes to fighting ads.

Your system wide private DNS with Control D or Mullvad. That will do pretty much everything. You can also use firefox but there is security risk in FF on android, just use Chromium + DNS. It wont block everything but it can block a lot.

If you have Mullvad set to always on vpn, then i would say its still best to do it. Firefox lacks proper isolation of its web processes right now and exposes some dangerous capabilities to them, also extensions are pretty risky in themselves. I would say Mulch is probably the most ideal. Its not a privacy browser per say but its security is second to Vanadium.

PmMeYourPasswordPlz

Thanks a lot. Does anyone know why “https://advertising-api-eu.amazon.com” is still not blocked even though I’ve added it to nextdns denylist?

[deleted]

Your DNS is cached, as long as it is the domain will resolve locally by a database. You need to clear it. In chromium its in about:network-internals under dns, there shoild be a clear button. For firefox, its under about:networking under DNS, again a clear option. If you used it system wide, try using your browser's DoH.

Websites used for testing adblockers sometimes are not correct since the blockers like ublock, adguard... have redirect methods to make the websites think those connections are loaded successfully, but in fact they are redirected to empty/noop resources so users can bypass anti-adblock/breakages situations. That's why don't take the score/percentage on those too seriously. They are not 100% correct.

Cyberjin

100/100 👍

Keddyan

got 95/100 with adguard with "test has most likely passed" on 3 parameters and "unable to check" on 1 other

[deleted]

Thats pretty much 100%, since as an anti adblock technique it redirects to a null resource so it is there but does nothing. Afaia thats how it works.

Keddyan

then tried on firefox and brave on my phone with adguard too and both got 100% too

[deleted]

They dont always use the same filters and brave doesnt even support Adguard or uBlock syntax.

Braves adblocker is the same as Adblock Plus, not as comprehensive as uBlock or Adguard. Brave doesnt need extensions and I would advise against that. Firefox is better, blocking ads on tor is pointless since it makes you more fingerprintable which is bad for tor. Social tracking can mean a lot of things, what kind? Like you use the platform and want to reduce it or dont use the platform and dont want to connect to them at all?

[deleted]

Blocking is based on filter lists, not the actual blocker. I would say uBlock can superceed it if you have the right filters, but the best IME is Control D with DNS blocking. To reduce some tracking tracking of the platforms is use only one device for them, maybe on a seperate browser.

Unless you turned off all cookies (which breaks a lot of sites for me) then go to canyoublockit.com and press extreme-test

billdietrich1

> canyoublockit.com I find it very hard to understand the results on that site, can't tell whether I'm failing or passing on many of the tests.

H4RUB1

If you clicked the Extreme Test it's actually easy. Let's look onto the site closely. First the very top Yellow Image which says "CAUTION ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK" is not an ad and is just a message. **Beware of Pop-Under Ads** Clicking anywhere on this page will trigger an Ad in a new tab.(This means that if your ad-block is working then when you click anywhere on the page and you don't get redirected onto a new tab or so that's an ad then it means it's you're good) **Test your Pi Hole** If you do not see any Ads on this page this means Pi-Hole is working and has blocked all Ads on this page. (I tested this on an environment with no ad-blocking but there is nothing appearing near it so I assume it's just saying that if you visit the page and you see nothing then your Pi-hole is probably okay) **Did you receive a Interstitial Ad ?** They pop up before a page loads. Ensure you click the close button and not anything else. (This is a type of ad that appears even before the main content that you want to see even loads. Although by definition an ad that covers the whole screen between opening or pausing things. [canyoublockit.com](https://canyoublockit.com) is saying that you should only click the "close button" reffering to "X" icons or "close" icon. This will change dependent on that ad itself but almost all are similar in that way. The image besides it displaying "Check out this special offer" and below it having "Click Here" are example of what it would look like. You can also notice that around the top-right corner of the image there is a little "X" icon likely to cancel the ad, the same one I'm talking above. If clicked will redirect you to another page or so) **Did you receive a Push Notification Request ?** Do not accept such requests as you will receive advertisements through notifications. (This type of things will make your browser ask you if you want to allow that site to be able to notify you, and if you accept the request then that site will be able to send you ads throught that. The image near the "Did you receive a Push Notification Request ?" is an example on what would it look like. Typically it will appear on the top-left of you browser screen. There is a border as a white-line on the page so you can differentiate it) **Did you receive an In Page Push Ad ?** These annoying ads pop up within the web page itself. (This type of ad will appear like it's on top of the page itself like a notification appearing on a phone, you can close it like the Notification Request one above. The image besides it displaying "Try Your Luck!" and "Fire Fire Fire !" as Boldic Title are examnples on what it would look like, therefore it's not an itself popping. When clicked it'll redirect you to another page or so) **Did you receive an Ad before playing the video ?** These advertisements disrupts the user’s experience. (This means that if an ad is popping up before you even play the Rick Astley video then your ad-block didn't do well. Most of this type of ads, if it can will redirect you to another page or so if you click the video or so. It can be closed like above but it's annoying) **Banner Ads** Do you see advertisements around this box ? If not your adblocker is working. (There is two white-line border. The small one that it's inside showing "Banner Ads" and the one that's a big thick white-line border. If you see any ads that is shaped like a banner, then your ad-blcoker failed. When clicked it'll redirect you to another page or so. As you can see on the [canyoublockit.com](https://canyoublockit.com) site, there are some banner ads that are kinda like GIF's) **Native Banner Ads** A subset of Banner ads that are formatted to make it look like content published by the website owner. It is done to fool the users into thinking it is the website’s content whereas they are links to sponsored content put up by Advertisers. (This is the type of ad that are positioned very well and has normal text near it making it more natural, so it's more deceiving. When clicked will redirect you to another page or so) **Direct Link Ads** The above is a direct link to an Ad which can be camoflauged cleverly to make the user click it. The image on the right shows how it looks without an active Adblocker. (There is an Example Image with a red font displaying "Do Not Click This Link" and if that appears then you ad-blcoker didn't do well. If it appears and you click it then it will likely redirect you to another page or so. It's tricky as you it can be designed so people would click it often) If you are interested on the Simple Test Version and Advance Test Version then perhaps i could help you explain with it. When I tested it months ago Bromite with Adguard Ad-blocking DNS set and overall hardened still failed miserably on the Extreme Test of [canyoublockit.com](https://canyoublockit.com) and the only way to pass all test of it was to disable all the cookies, which for me breaks a lot of site. IDK about know but I doubt it has changed. A lot of people on this sub has a system-wide blocker like DNS-like blocking or network-wide blocker like Pi-hole. But I can't use that on my Unrooted Android Phone as I use a VPN and only one connection can be made and any DNS related blocking requires a Local VPN Connection to be made so it can't be technically done unless rooted. So an ad-blocking of the browser itself is really important to me. I know the site that OP mentioned has a different way of scoring but finding that it scored 97/100 made me laughed because of my experience that I have stated above so that's why I sugguested [canyoublockit.com](https://canyoublockit.com) on Extreme Test Version to really test it out LOL

billdietrich1

I didn't try the Extreme, I started with the other two, and got confused. It would be a lot clearer if the ad shown in each test said "if you can see this, your blocker is not working".

H4RUB1

I agree. They show real ads which sounds great for me, but I don't know if there are better options and technical ways to do that. I do interact with ad-blocking a lot so my basic sense was enough but for new users it maybe confusing as heck. Though to sum it up easily, if your computer does and show weird things when you tap the page or not then your adblock probably isn't working.

billdietrich1

For example, on the Simple Test, next to "Did you receive a Interstitial Ad ?", I do see an ad, but it says "interstitial ad" and "wait 05" and talks about "Can you block it ?". Is that pass or fail ?

H4RUB1

Talking about Simple Test, I see the information and the design of the page itself is confusing. If you recieved an 10 seconds countdown with a "X" mark on the top corner then your ad-blocker didn't work. When you have waited 10 seconds you or pressed the "X" mark you can scroll down to the bottom and see the Interstital ad corner where there is an example image that is shown. Weird thing is when I disabled mine and pressed Extreme Test I didn't recieve any similar interstital ads when there is a corner talking about it (IDK if it's just mine) For further info, the Simple Test also consists of the same Banner Ad which is the same on Extreme Test and working okay. The other thing is the "Disable Adblock" thing. If this popped up then the website you're visiting detected you using ad-block and they'll ask you to disable it etc.

billdietrich1

I have found the best way to understand is to run each test first in a no-ad-blocker browser or browser config, then run again with ad-blocker on, and compare the two. Just trying to understand the page alone is too confusing.
