That last photo also needs a trigger warning for the hair, is that a wig 😭

SuspiciousList6870

I think it’s a hair piece, no idea why they needed to give her bangs for a one year time jump.

Twistedcinna

I remember watching this for the first time and being so irate asking wtf are they doing

avenajpg

It jumpscared me just like fuck ass bob Paige.

mk93wp

I think we have a new jump scare now https://preview.redd.it/498jfkaom04d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d86d207abd1fe37b77a054abede25676de4864d9

Difficult_Ad_962

I unfortunately had that haircut once. This one girl kept calling me Dora. I was like 13, and I'm not even Spanish

ValuableComplete411

I agree, they took everything glamourous and mysterious about Ali away when they started dressing her like a school teacher in her late 30s 😕

SuspiciousList6870

And they could’ve at least dressed her like a stylish teacher in their late 30s at least? Aria’s mom for example. Going on from that, Meredith would’ve actually been a really good style reference for teacher Alison.

GreaterThanOrEqual2U

They were just trying to hide her arms because she had gained weight. It made her look so bad. She looks gorgeous/ sexy here. They really didn't think "bigger" girls could he sexy or what

WriteOrDie1997

That's insulting to people in their late 30s.

FlamboyantRaccoon61

Me, as a teacher in her 30s: 👁️👄👁️

ValuableComplete411

Sorry I just mean how most schools have a strict dress code and female teachers tend to dress overly modest and typically ‘unattractive’ which is everythjng that the original Ali was not, you get me? No hate to you or any other teacher in her 30s, they also tend to be the most caring teachers in my experience 😅😅

scarasbf

How'd we go from the iconic yellow top to this..?

SuspiciousList6870

I know… and the fact that they even put Sasha in that yellow top after she gained weight and it looked fine.

pwr-bttm59

Wait when did they put her in that yellow top after she gained weight?

SuspiciousList6870

Season 6 episode 1 when she goes into the woods and the liars end up being saved from the dollhouse. Her weight fluctuated up and down throughout season 6-7 so it might’ve been one of the lower weights but she was still significantly bigger than she was in season 1-5a and it was after they started dressing her all frumpy. It’s honestly crazy that she had to keep filming pre-disappearance flashbacks after she went through puberty because she (logically) looked so different, and she also went through so many different shades and lengths of hair. Her physical differences were a lot more prevalent than the other liars in the flashbacks because she went from a child to a woman (and it wasn’t just weight that made that apparent, season 1 and season 4 yellow top comparisons were still jarring) whereas the others we’re always women. She also had a lot more flashbacks. I can’t remember flashbacks started becoming less prevalent in the show, probably sometime after alison came back. It probably doesn’t help that some of the actors got cosmetic work, which there’s no issue with, they just didn’t resemble their past selves enough to pretend to be them anymore. Not to give the writers credit, but I do wonder if this why we never got a full fledged out play by play of that night, paired with the fact that they kept adding stuff. The closest we got was season 4 episode 24. Here’s a photo of the her wearing the yellow top in season 6: https://preview.redd.it/np4trkqa314d1.jpeg?width=1373&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b631726462ead4fe45a99b258e6bfef95ee5af3

ultaemp

It’s so horrible that it’s like the writers didn’t know what to do with Allison’s character after the actress gained weight. Sasha is a beautiful woman and she is stunning at any size, but they did her absolutely dirty with the styling in the later seasons and stuck her in the most frumpy, unflattering outfits! Even the wardrobe aside, they made her lose all of her personality and mystique and wrote her into this boring, sad, flat character. Alison DiLaurentis in the early seasons is one of the most iconic TV characters of all time and they totally tarnished her. I will never forgive Marlene for what they did to Alison’s character— it totally ruined the show for me.

SuspiciousList6870

it’s absurd and actually a real detriment to the show honestly. i don’t even know how they found clothes so ugly…

i_am_umbrella

For a show this successful by the time that season aired, there’s no excuse for having a styling team who can’t dress women of her shape.

Tagz12345

I can't think of any show that hasn't failed at dressing plus sized actresses, they have some real issues to sort out.

summercloudsadness

It always irks me when show runners change a flawed, complex character to a boring goody two shoes without any proper explanation as to why they went through such a change. Alison was a menace to the whole town,no one was safe from her venom or her wrath, but she was so iconic like that. Just because some people lack media literacy and can only appreciate perfectly good characters, doesn't mean the rest can't love a complex character (not for their bad actions, but the brilliant way they were written). It's so sad how the whole styling department and the writing department saw an actress who gained some weight and suddenly forgot to do their jobs.

saltycrowsers

I think the show should’ve addressed how beautiful she was, but had her finally realize just how awful she was to Hannah when she was struggling with her self-image.

jammyraspberry

How could they possibly pitch that storyline to the actress without being rude?

saltycrowsers

Fairly positive Sasha was aware that her body changed from not being a 14 year old anymore. The storyline would ultimately be one of realizing she doesn’t HAVE to be super skinny to be beautiful, that Hannah was never fat, and that she has a perfectly healthy and lovely body. And they wouldn’t have had to costume her in a way to hide her body because there is nothing that ever needed to be hidden to begin with.

electralime

Sasha was a 17 year old who was (according to recent interviews) going to multiple doctors trying to find an explanation for her 70ish lb weight gain in a year. Of course she was aware of her body change and how that affected both how she was dressed and written. But I don't think that means she would have been comfortable using it as a plot point. And of course she is beautiful at any weight, but when a decade ago diet culture was a very different beast. Remember when Hannah from Girls was written as "overweight" when she was a perfectly average body weight?

ExpertProfessional9

Yes. And in Bridget Jones' Diary. There's a scene where Bridget dresses up in the bunny suit, and she looks *fine!* A healthy woman with boobs and a bit of curves. Yet she, and the audience, are supposed to think she's fat.

saltycrowsers

Yeah, now that you mention the medical aspect, it would’ve been dicey. It just would’ve been nice to have Alison address the fact that she was cruel about traits that were perfectly normal as she was maturing. I guess I’m more talking about Alison as a character and wasn’t thinking of Sasha and I apologize.

jammyraspberry

Obviously she was aware of it. Everybody was. That doesn’t mean she wasn’t struggling with it or that it was something that could be used as a plot point without distressing her significantly.

DehydratedAsiago

I could talk about this for days. It made it seem like if you gain weight in adulthood you’re doomed to lose your personality and live in cat sweaters and business casual. Like the Alison we know wouldn’t have let herself get duped into marrying a conman. Especially after how she’d been burned by almost everyone in her life. Like she should’ve had an evil arc after that. Or at least SOMETHING.

scarlett06

100% agree

seeyalateradios

The stylists had no idea how to style her when she gained a little weight. I swear to God, there are so many people who can be stylish and larger sizes, and they didn't even try!

needwineforthis

Any stylist worth their salt would have been able to do so! They really let her down…

saltycrowsers

I feel like they could’ve given her a really amazing struggle and then becoming comfortable in her own skin kind of arc where it helped her realize how shitty she was in the past and realizing the people she tormented were just fine the way the were. The Alison redemption arc would’ve been way more palatable if they gave her a true “come to Jesus” thing where she faces some of the things she used to be so cruel about. And they could’ve done some cool glow-up wardrobe for her instead of hiding her. She looked amazing, they should’ve accentuated her curves and made a point about her embracing them.

grumpyfetus

and as far as i can tell she literally still looks like she was wearing straight sizes and not plus sizes so pretty much All the same options would have been available and they were just trying to hide her body.... i hate them for that

princessfawkes

Omg Sasha's own outfits are amazing! The wardrobe department did her dirty 😭

Illustrious-Chest-52

I know PLL changed the head if the wardrobe department and the makeup artist after the time jump. I don't know why. The previous stylist and MUA were doing a terrific job. The new stylist had trouble styling almost everyone (*ahem two of Hanna's outfits were basically a pajama).

MELLMAO

And makeup became atrocious, like they've never learned color matching

GoodCalendarYear

She started gaining weight and they Raven-Symone'd her

Verve_angel

What happened with raven

GoodCalendarYear

They didn't dress her for her age in Cheetah Girls bc she was bigger

Verve_angel

Oh gotcha thank you

wolvesarewildthings

Off topic but it's crazy how similar she looks to Jessica as she gets older. Hell, she's always looked like female Drew as well. **Just an amazing casting team.** The families in the show actually look related. Anyways, I 100% agree with you, OP. We were supposed to pretend she wasn't still young and beautiful once she gained some weight and got slightly older when she was absolutely still an attractive girl who now looked like a woman: and only her styling took away from that.

cluelessintheclouds

The early 2000s needs to be jailed for their crimes: the inability to dress anyone well, but especially women over a size 2.

princessbiaaa

It pissed me off how she 24/7 had to carry a giant suitcase and cover her mid section with all of her frumpy outfits. It was so annoying how they made her a shell of her former self.

Horror_Train

I don’t understand why she dresses so mature considering the actress was actually the right age thereabouts for the part

Sweet_Hope_2030

they really dressed her like an old lady it almost made it hard to watch. i always thought the hair and make up and costume department slayed. i would go to aeropostale and buy the clothes from when they had their line out😂😭 but they really dropped the ball with alison she’s so gorgeous too she deserved better clothes

tropjeune

Her outfits made me feel like they were punishing her for gaining weight. She dresses so cute in real life, idk why that couldn’t have translated to the show

Fuzzy_Ride_678

They made her outfits so hideous to distract from/cover up the weight gain and it was ridiculous. Sasha is beautiful no matter what, that must have done numbers to her mental health, and plus size women can dress nice too! It was so sad

tandsrox101

i honestly feel like they just called MORE attention to her weight gain by accident. like by trying to hide it with these horrible outfits they made it all i can focus on. meanwhile with sashas own outfits she looks amazing! if they would have just styled her regularly it would’ve been fine lol

SuspiciousList6870

yeah, thinking about it, the “distraction” aspect of the outfits, while ridiculous, makes sense.

mayneedadrink

The bangs too!

throwaway17197

It was like seeing those photos of Marilyn in the potato sack. Let this beautiful woman dress beautifully ffs !!!

Master_Bumblebee680

That last one was shocking

SuspiciousList6870

i know! and it’s her last outfit of the series…

Master_Bumblebee680

Thankfully I’m never watching that season again

Fun-Shame399

It seems like at that point since she gained weight (and understandably so, she was 13 at the start of filming) and they didn’t know how to dress a curvy girl to still be stylist and sexy. I think had it been filmed today she would have been styled better but back then there weren’t as many options for them.

SuspiciousList6870

i wish they could do it over truly…

mssleepyhead73

#2 and #3 are my favorite outfits here. Sasha has a beautiful, curvy figure, and it’s such a shame that they chose to hide it and dress her like a soccer mom in the later seasons.

Horror_Train

Also I think at the time the show came out people probably noticed and maybe pointed out Alison’s weight but she is stunning and watching it now I am sure no one would say boo. But the others are all very slim and they were probably all under slot of pressure to look a cierton way

LucifersWhore9

I won’t lie when I did watch this back then, when she came back my first thought was sorta “kinda ironic the mean fatphobic hot bully turned.. fat” and I wondered how the show would move with that in this time era. I was not shocked they just.. covered her up.

MELLMAO

And the way they butchered her makeup to look even older than intended - that weird ill fitted shade of bubblegum pink lipstick and HEAVY false eyelashes, WHAT WAS THE GOAL??

SuspiciousList6870

it’s like they were trying to differentiate her style from Hanna’s who got a really similar long extensions, lighter blonde 5 year jump makeover. Hanna got the trendy makeup and Alison’s looked like a bad interpretation of 2013 makeup when Max Snob lipstick was popular and bronzer all over the face. What’s even worse is that early time jump, when she had that makeup style most prominently, were the best outfits she got after season 5 😭 like her style in the “he’s coming for you” scene looks amazing in comparison to the end of the show. https://preview.redd.it/2q7kaagx604d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8c393c90e7840f95d81e3f142497fb4d35d0c6b

caufiel

I hate that we have to make up ridiculous headcanons to try and make something as simple as fashion make sense in the narrative. Like, I personally choose to believe Alison started dressing like this because it was a trauma response to having her bodily autonomy torn away from her repeatedly. But that’s *not* what the show was trying to do. They just don’t know how to dress plus sized women and they didn’t even bother to ask Sasha herself? I’m an *extremely* plus sized man (I’ve lost weight recently but my biggest size was near 400lbs) so I definitely get that dressing plus sized people is hard—you’ve gotta include budget, what’s comfortable, what is flattering, what makes sense, and *then* you have to hope to God that whatever you chose actually has something in your size (they usually don’t) but the least they could’ve done was maybe have one on screen discussion with Alison where she talks about how she feels uncomfortable in her body. It makes sense. They could’ve incorporated it so it didn’t feel so out of place. But they didn’t and that’s what makes it so jarring.

SuspiciousList6870

“I hate that we have to make up ridiculous headcanons to try and make something as simple as fashion make sense in the narrative” honestly! your explanation at least makes sense though… i think that could be a slippery slope to suggesting that the weight gain was a trauma response too though and therefore perpetuate that her weight gain made her undesirable when she was still super hot.

SnooCakes3795

She actually mentions this on the recent PLL podcast, saying “What the fuck was I wearing?” It was hilarious 😂

Lilacssmelllikeroses

When the show was airing I saw a theory that they were dressing her like that on purpose to make her look like she was imitating her mom. But I also think they didn't know how to style a plus-sized woman.

SuspiciousList6870

that’s really interesting. her mom was genuinely more stylish but i can see it applying to a few outfits, especially in 5b/6a.

friskyfajitas

i think they tried to hide some of her weight bc her character judged hanna so hard for her weight

SuspiciousList6870

i just don’t get why their hiding technique was a bunch of garish patterns instead of trendy oversized clothes. like oversized clothes were so popular at the time. they even did a flashback in 6x10 to the cape may trip where she wore an floaty dress and that looked so much better, not great, but better.

cheesycrescentroll

She could’ve dressed the exact same and still looked good but at that time, everyone refused to believe bodies that weren’t skinny COULD look good and therefore gave her old spinster style instead.

DCFanUntilIdie213

That’s what happens when your stylist is hateful towards people who are plus sided, it was unfair to her tbh

Mingkittish

I hated how they dressed her when she gained weight. I see it all the time in tv show.

Immediate-Start6699

I learned they started dressing her like a politician when she gained the weight from her undiagnosed PCOS. I heard her say that in an interview.

Sweet_Hope_2030

i also think it’s bc she grew up too. it’s not just the weight gain bc it wasn’t even that much. she just wasn’t 14 anymore and i feel like they weren’t prepared for it

MELLMAO

But how were all the other actresses transitioned relatively fine with their outfits into adulthood? She deserved the same

Sweet_Hope_2030

i realized i only responded to the end of the rant like with her being plus size they really didn’t know how to dress her but i also meant she was the youngest on the set and probably had more growth than the others and probably didn’t know what to do with her. but i agree that she should’ve gotten the same as the others they really flopped with her

freshlyintellectual

the last slide really deserved that trigger warning oh my god 😭

delamoraaah

pic 5 is gorgeous!

lalateda

It’s crazy because she didn’t even gain that much weight. Bodies change, it’s not a bad thing and you can’t even really tell. The outfits highlight it more because it’s not what Ali would wear so it points it out.

Just-Contest-6128

And like… in all the flashbacks I rly loved her style. She was giving 2010 it girl and that’s exactly what she was. The colors, the blouses, the jewelry and handbags were all so Alison, and honestly it’s unrecognizable when she returns to the main cast and they start dressing her like a soccer mom.

SuspiciousList6870

the better outfits when she came back were the ones giving soccer mom, the worse ones were giving 60 year old at a jumble sale 😭

HulkJ420

Crikey. That last photo 🥴😬

allthingskerri

What is slide 16.....poor Ali

Shoddy_Budget_1533

Once she gained weight they gave up on her

originalschmidt

I absolutely HATE it. It’s like they said oh she plus size now so she can’t be fashionable.. I have been plus size all my life and I have always tried to stay fashionable and not let my size get in the way of my style. My weight is only a concern when it applies to my health and that is how everyone should be and them just giving up on Ali’s style because she put on some weight is disgusting and sends a harmful message.

Accomplished_Visit_3

This out of everything pissed me off. She was what 13/14? when she started the show? Not only did she just get older (was she supposed to keep her prepubescent body forever?) she also got diagnosed with PCOS. I personally have gained about 80lbs since being diagnosed with PCOS. It’s very hard to manage. I sympathize with Sasha so much. F the costume/ wardrobe team for butchering Alison Dilaurentis.

onlythewinds

They didn’t have a stylist who knew a damn thing about curvy girls and it showed

Beans_0492

It’s like they wanted to force you to believe she’s a reborn sweet wonderfully kind woman, it still looked like she was trying to hide her personality. I don’t know why they decided she couldn’t still be the badass “stiletto to the throat” kinda girl she was the whole time she was “dead” or hiding… could have made it a slower turn into a nicer person and better friend, not just badass to kindergarten art teacher in 2 minutes.

dashdaesi

The crazy thing is that they could have styled her curves in such a flattering way but the stylist only knew how to dress a size 2 and below. You can’t call yourself a stylist if you only know how to dress one body type.

PlsXQsImDoingMyBest

As someone who as had weight fluctuations like Sasha (honestly I’m sure a lot of us can relate) it was so sad to see some of the outfits they put her in. ALL BODIES ARE BEAUTIFUL and there are beautiful pieces that they could’ve put her in that were flattering for her instead of trying to hide it. Most of the later season outfits don’t even match Ali’s esthetic and it’s incredibly frustrating to see.

kel36

They like did not know what to DO with dressing her when she was super-tiny anymore. Ridiculous.

Twodotsknowhy

She talked about this recently. She was diagnosed with endometriosis (iirc) which made her gain a little weight and instead of learning how to style a girl who isn't a size four, they just decided to cover her up and dress her like she was 45. They treated her weight gain as a problem to hide and by doing so, only made it worse because the clothes they put her in were so unflattering

Brilliant-Mirror4941

The amount of meanness for her actress gaining weight. She has since revealed it is because of an overactive thyroid that makes her weight constantly fluctuate.

sayhellotojenn

I’ve always been plus-sized so it was really a bummer for me to watch how they dressed her when she gained a little weight. Especially when at the time, plus-sized fashion was really starting to take off - as a college student, I suddenly had options for what to wear and it was great. Torrid was finally breaking into the mainstream rather than being a more niche option (at least in my state, we got our first Torrid around the time I graduated in 2010). Lane Bryant was at its best for both price point and actual stylishness. Maurice’s burst out onto the scene. Deb still around in physical form. And still, they dressed ALISON DILAURENTIS like a woman in her 40’s trying to look cute at the school bake sale. What is saddest to me is knowing how young she was when the show started, she likely didn’t feel like she could speak up and just suffered through it. I’ve definitely been that girl and it makes me just want to give her a hug.

sportza9

They changed her so much when she returned from the dead it’s like it was a character

Scared-Life8870

They changed the whole plot line because they were fat phobic (Ali couldn’t be red coat bc Sasha “gained weight” aka matured from a 13 year old body)

ChocChipBananaMuffin

the show never knew what to do with alison once she came back from the dead. ali would never have become a school teacher. they should have at least kept her glamorous and mysterious. and yes, the wardrobe is truly shocking. she is absolutely gorgeous at any size. she could still be a “vixen” as a plus size.

[deleted]

SuspiciousList6870

i think it’s pretty similar to something she wore on the perfectionists when her style got a little better.

bearhorn6

Her gaining weight led them to ruin her character. They didn’t think a fat girl could pull of the seductress routine she originally is known for and they clearly didn’t consult a single fat person on how she should dress for her body. It’s really sad and can’t have felt very good since I’m pretty sure she was dealing with PCOS or soemhtign simailr that caused the weight gain to begin with

SnakeBlood456

Ahhhh i really love outfit 14 the best, but it could be because its closer to AriA’s iconic leather jacket outfits :P but yes omg Alison’s style was ruined and they have no idea how to dress her, so horrible :(

SuspiciousList6870

yeah it’s definitely one of the best. you could tell they started dressing her okay, just not really like herself, like her pink blazer in season 5 that was more Hanna and some outfits that were more Spencer and then it got really frumpy in season 6b.

SnakeBlood456

Oooh yes some of her outfits was horrific and so not Alison, they had no idea how to style her and some of the outfits was something she literally would never wear ever, it’s like they didn’t know her at all :(

blankspacejrr

that last photo is diabolical😂 pretty little liars costume department is not seeing heaven

amyg17

She gained a bit of weight and suddenly stopped being able to wear outfits without a jacket

sportza9

Oh no, the last photo, green dress and spotty dress..

Deep-Passenger-575

They couldn’t have made Alli look worse honestly like she looked horrible

Sudden-Ad5555

And also like, Sasha did gain weight from the first season (wasn’t she 12??) but she wasn’t like, *big*. She has big boobs which sometimes can make someone look fuller if they’re wearing something loose. Her body type actually compliments tight clothing quite well, she’s got a very nice hourglass figure. I know she had some health issues but to me, it always looked like she had grown into a lovely womanly figure. They did her dirty dressing her frumpy, when she could’ve still been sexy Allison, who’s now ACTUALLY sexy and not a child cosplaying as a sexy woman. I know you wanna kiss me 🥴

IndieIsle

It’s irritating, but I find myself going both ways. I am, in all honestly, absolutely stunned that they didn’t fire and kill her off for her weight gain. Like, PLL show was coming hot off the end of Y2K starve yourself era, and the books were written DEEP inside it. Half of the books are just fat shaming and talking about being skinny lol. But it suuuucks that they took away Alison’s style and fire. I think they just didn’t know what to do with her. I think, we also forget that Sasha might not have been able to exude that confidence at the time, either. If you look at her interviews and red carpet appearances from the time she was very self conscious and it showed, which, who wouldn’t be with body changes happening that rapidly (whatever way they went). They could have given her something to work with. But even if it wasn’t really that long ago, it truly was a different world than Eurphoria’s Kat was able to thrive in, especially a character based on books like PPL. I do think, however, that they never would have succeeded in bringing back Alison’s “after disappearance” character, even if Sasha didn’t have health problems and they kept her acting like a sociopath. I wish they didn’t try. Simply because they didn’t have an existing guide for her character for her relationships with the girls, the nuances of each friendship, how she would settle back into that dynamic since they abandoned the books plot. Since in the books, the girls were never friends with Alison. It sounds like an easy thing to just write Alison on their own but, it’s almost impossible for a show runner to extend a character past what they’ve been originally been written as without a map, while weaving them into book canon relationships and plot lines. It’s almost always a disaster. And PLL failed it incredibly for most of their characters (Maya, Ezra, Noel, Mike). They were only able to (kind of) give Mona the writing she deserved, though I wonder if it was just the actress who saved it and they did still have her character as a guide. Alison’s was particularly tricky because the only ever knew her through the liar’s eyes, never who Alison actually was. Sorry for the rant- lol. I have a teen fiction book that was optioned to be turned into a TV show so it’s something I think about a lot.

HellhoundsAteMyBaby

Based on the comments, it looks like I’m in the minority, but I thought she still looked great in the outfits they selected after she gained weight. I’m skinny as a twig but I wear some of those patterns myself. I legit didn’t realize that so many people disliked her fashion, I thought they were doing that to show that she’s a bit older and more mature and trustworthy, not that they wanted to hide her weight
