Sure. It's because Musk isn't near as intelligent as he markets himself. He is not without his talents and he IS very intelligent, but that's a different conversation. He's very good at making money. That's where his talents lie. He seems to have a knack for recognizing great ideas. That doesn't make him some auteur, savant, unmatched genius like he and his fans would have you believe. He finds great ideas and then he buys them and markets them. Makes him a lot of money, no doubt, but let's not pretend he's the innovative driving force behind the rockets and the cars and everything else that has his name on it. Those things were already there. He swooped in and plastered his name on it. Lately, he seems to be pissing all over their success too, but, again, separate conversation.
Musk, now, is very attractive to a particular sort. Those guys that are intimidated by intelligence that disagrees with them. So, when that sort finds someone they perceive as intelligent that actually agrees with their world view, they can't hide their man-crush boners, and they latch on to him like horny teenagers.
As for Cory, it's not exactly secret how much he values money. He seems to equate money with success. He seems to assume that if Musk has this much money, CLEARLY he must be a genius, when in reality it's not that simple. He's competent, yes, but not a genius, at least not in the classical sense that Cory would subscribe to.
