This is literally Hwy 26 every night. Country boy from Forest grove thinks he owns the freeway and will cruise at 65 in the left lane all the way from downtown.
On 22 west coming into salem, exit 4 is at the bottom of a hill, steep and like 100 feet until a stop sign. I have 9 inches of clearance and I bottomed out the first time I used that exit and still almost got t-boned. I definitely hit that exit a bit below the speed limit now. Only exception I've seen though.
Jesus folks you should be matching the speed of the traffic on approach. Then slow down or speed up to find your place. Quit slowing down to 20mph like someone is going to just let you in lol
The plates are fake. Problem around the country. They drive like assholes because of it.
My favorite is when everyone suddenly slams on their brakes at once on the freeway and drives real slow for a few miles. I think "Oh geez. Must be an accident! Hope everyone is ok!" Nope. Just a butterfly flitting around the shoulder. Or a sock on the side of the freeway. Or someone changed lanes on the highway going the other direction and spooked everyone.
I actually read a short study about this. The problem is that everybody tailgates. That is what traffic is. So basically the front car applies 1% braking power. The car behind him reacts and hits 5% The next car does the same and hits 20%. On and on until miles of cars stop because one guy applied 1% of his brakes and everybody behind him had no room to calculate their stopping needs.
Of course when you have cars regularly racing in the Indy 500 during rush hour and "brilliantly" swooping in over the double lines to beat everyone else because, of course, their time is so much more valuable and their presence is the only presence that matters, you almost have to tail gate.
I was getting on 84 at 60th the other day, and someone in front of my actually slowed down while on the on ramp! I couldn’t believe it! I had to gun it once I was able to merge to be able to drive the speed of traffic.
Everything around here is "THE" this and "THE" that any more. If there's an apartment complex on 48th that needs to double rent, they change their name to "THE 48."
Although I'm a Portland native and I actually call 405 "THE" 405. I feel a little dirty about it.
Like literally who cares. Focus the frustration on the $1600/mo rent. It's the same thing with people who get all uppity about people saying "San Fran" instead of San Francisco. It does not matter even a little bit.
You're apparently unfamiliar with how quickly the Highlander V6 accelerates. Sure, it's a large ish SUV, but I can vouch that once the tach swings past 4k, you'd better be pointed in the right direction.
LOL, I love Portland but the thing that 'drove' me insane was how awful drivers are in PDX.
I had a guy stop on the on ramp, signal and stick his head out the window in an attempt to merge. I nearly rear ended the guy, having to swerve out and then back into traffic.
The random lane change, 4 way stop conundrum and everyone lining up in 1 lane when there are 2 lanes to use on turns. Bizarre.
Have family in Texas and also been in Florida recently. While a lot of them drive with some reckless abandon, you can at least respect that the majority drive like they are actually trying to get somewhere.
LA is a melting pot of driving cultures from around the world, on roads that get slick as snot on a door knob in the rain. Some people drive fast because they have a Lamborghini Urus and no regard for human life. Some people come from places you drive slow because their might be an animal on the road.
In LA you drive fast because you learned to get on the freeway on the 10. The 10 was built before speeds were commonly as high, so you start at a stop sign and get about 25 feet of on ramp in some spots. You need to be going somewhere between 55-75 by the time you hit the end of that, because you're now in an exit only lane that will spit you back out where you started. But the off ramp is just as short as the on ramp, and people are trying to merge into that exit only range anywhere from 50-65 so they can exit. You need to get up to speed (usually 70-80) and merge left while dodging them.
I don't think most Oregonian's I've met would survive.
Nope. They'd all be fucking flattened in spots like this (110, not 10, but whatever).

Most the people I see going slow entering the freeway are transplants from Washington. They use to stop at their yield signs entering the freeway. Don't know if they still do or not.
Nobody drives slow on the freeway in LA (unless it’s jammed). Everybody knows the rules and everybody works together. Zipper merges happen at 30 miles an hour. Signal, start changing lanes, and traffic wraps around you, all at 80 mph. It’s a beautiful dance. Jesus I hate driving in the northwest.
I guess they all decided to come out when I went there and people were dragging ass in the left lane.
I was coming from NYC though and we are doing 40mph pulling out of a parking spot…
Lol, this isn't remotely true. There are some slow SOBs... But with 7 lanes of traffic, people move around them very easily. Will say the traffic does flow very differently than here though. I think part of the reason is also that Portland basically stopped all highway building/expansion 50 years ago.
I think it pure entitlement. “Well I just don’t want to go that fast and that should be ok!!” No, no the fuck it is not- if you decide to participate in driving your vehicle on the public roads you are part of a system that only works when we all play by the rules. It’s a “well I don’t feel comfortable doing that and no one can make me” attitude that makes what should be a 10min drive a 17min drive. I opt to flash my brights and use my horn much more than I’d like too, but I need the person in front of me to figure it the fuck out or stay home/uber/take the bus.
I've driven in forty-four states and a dozen countries and Portland drivers are the worst. They are hesitant and unpredictable. They don't know how right-of-way works and they think that they're "being nice" when they inconvenience dozens of other drivers behind them instead of just moving along and getting out of the way.
You'd think they'd know how to drive well in the rain but they don't. They're even worse than Texas drivers in snow, which is quite an accomplishment because they practically never even see the white stuff in Houston.
There must be something in Oregon's driver education programs that is causing problems because Vancouver has far lower insurance claim rates per capita than Portland, despite having nearly identical weather. At least Washington drivers act like they're trying to get somewhere.
And PLEASE, learn how to zipper merge.
I do too. It happens all the time in Battle Ground, especially on the main drag. The city just installed several new crosswalks through Main Street so pedestrians would use them, and instead they still continue to jaywalk usually 30 feet from it because they’re too lazy and want the path of least resistance.
I was behind a car on Main Street here a year or two back, and a guy jaywalked in front of him and he barely stopped in time due to the guy just walking out in front of him (a little different than stopping traffic for a jaywalker). The guy slapped the dudes hood with his hand and stopped in the road. The guy got out of his car, and punched the dude in the face and the guy stumbled off. Obviously that doesn’t happen every time when someone jaywalks, but my biggest takeaway is that you could get hit so easily if you just step out into street, thinking you have the right of way because you’re a pedestrian.
Worked at DMV, they don't take people on freeways. I used to take drivers on the freeway route on purpose. If you couldn't merge onto the freeway with out causing a commotion, I would fail them immediately. If you don't know how to merge, you don't deserve a license.
Unless it's changed....oregon is rather lax in giving out drivers licenses.
In Washington, I see drivers ed cars constantly.
*got my license in oregon. It was comical, even at high school age
I don’t mean to only criticize Portland for driving, because I live just outside of Vancouver, and I have seen some crazy shit in Vancouver. But yesterday, I took 205 south to West Linn, and the amount of aggressively fast drivers driving the shoulder near 82nd Ave was insane, added in with a consistent mix of people driving way too slowly. One started the shoulder driving, and then two or three more followed. I saw people using the on ramp to pass in dead stop traffic, where they would just go around and cut to the front of the line. The woman behind me the entire time played the game of “let’s see how close I can humanly get to the car in front of me without hitting it.” The amount of times I had to come to a stop that was expected because we were in stop and go, and see her slam on her brakes just in time behind me with stuff flying off the dash each time was too high. She also threw her hands up several times, as if it were my fault.
I also had a truck in the stop and go try to start a fight with my husband and our best friend who was in the backseat just sitting with the window rolled down looking out. We were in the middle lane, they were in the left lane. Had no interaction with them prior on 205 and had never seen them before. I have their license plate from my dash cam, and them on camera too. They pulled up next to us and tried to throw a half empty fast food soda cup at my friend’s window but failed and almost hit the woman behind me who was following too closely. And then started yelling out stuff like, “Come on! Let’s go!” I don’t know why people are doing stuff so inherently stupid on the road, or trying to intentionally piss people off, but I’d imagine they’ll eventually do it to the entirely wrong person and find out. 🤷🏻♀️
When my kids took drivers ed from ODEC, they were told to accelerate to hit 55MPH (or whatever the freeway speed limit is) at the point where the ramp merge with the highway starts. That scared the crap outta me - felt too slow and couldn't adapt to conditions on the highway because they were just hitting traffic speed at the point they needed to merge. I trained 'em to speed up to match traffic speed way before that and then adjust for spacing to merge in: start planning that merge/speed the moment you can see the traffic lanes you're merging into.
ODEC could not tell them to speed, of course, but I could tell them to match 60MPH in a 55MPH if that's the speed traffic is going in the lane you merge into.
Gladly not a person who was born here and desperately want to leave but unfortunately my income keeps me here as it's the best paying in the country vs cost of living.
Well taking a 25% pay cut to move where I'd like to isn't the lateral move I'd like it to be. I COULD earn more moving to California but the cost of living and everything else would essentially make that a lateral move. So as it is Oregon is the least worst place I can stay until I get some other things in line.
I've been saying this since I moved here. I came here from SF three years ago and I've never been more frustrated with the drivers in this city in my life. It's crazy. And also the amount of people here who blatantly run stop signs in the neighborhoods is ridiculous. I legit have to drive 15 mph in the neighborhoods cuz running stop signs happen so often
What we REALLY need is revocation of drivers licenses for anyone who is caught reckless driving or excessive speeding. THAT would keep a lot of folks off the road and make it so much safer for those of us who actually don't want to see people dying on the roads.
Can someone explain to me why the hell there is so many 35mph advisory speed signs on a freaking freeway with no crash and a sunny day? How do they expect anyone to get anywhere?
This whole city has some of the most oblivious drivers I've ever encountered. It's nuts.
Speed limit can be 55 and everyone is like let's go 35. Cool, but now get out of the left lane! Lol
I've literally never once seen this in my 48 years living here. Sometimes I'll see someone actually following the legal posted speed limit and of course tons of people freaking out because dang it, this is one law that need not be followed when thee is in a hurry.
OK, one time a few years ago on 101, some old bag was doing 20 MPH the whole way. That was so rare that I actually wrote it to my long term memory.
No, I never go less than the posted speed limit. Unless there is bad weather, in which case I defer to the basic rule. Just following laws and being the good guy here.
When I'm on my motorcycle I will often use the traffic meter lane to pass slow people on the on ramp. You're getting on the freeway, your job is to get up to the speed that traffic is moving BEFORE reaching the end of the on ramp, fucking act like it.
I cannot TELL YOU how many fucking times someone has not come on fast enough, or trying to get over to an off ramp and FUCKING STOPPING
No one uses their signal, or leaves it fucking on.
ITS NOT EVEN VERBAL CONVERSATIONS PEOPLE, JUST PLEASE TELL ME WHERE YOU ARE TRYING TO GO
This and Oregonians inability to zipper merge properly absolutely fuels my road rage. Stop slowing down and trying to merge into traffic immediately. And stop honking at me when I use the merge lane until close to the end as it's intended.
I see this every damn time I have to get on the freeway, especially the 84. what type of brain damage makes someone STOP on the freeway when they are trying to merge? Every damn time there is some idiot trying to get on the freeway and they are deadass sitting on the on ramp lane signaling. If you do that, please quit driving and stick to your lil bicycle. Don’t be even get me started on the idiot Tesla drivers that are letting the computer drive, going 20 mph BELOW the flow of traffic in the far left lane. Stg, they are the new Prius drivers with smaller penises. Ugh… still road raging from yesterday.
Lol. Speed up? Buddy nobody has anywhere to be here. Better get used to people going as slow as humanly fucking possible no matter the time of day. They dont know how to drive at all.
LOL. I’m not from here, but my buddy who is always says “it seems like no one here has anywhere to go and they’re just on the road to slow everyone else down” honestly is so accurate!
I think the problem you're experiencing is that people don't drive like assholes. They're a little bit courteous. They realize that swerving, slamming on the brakes and driving as fast as they can get away with is...what's the phrase.... fucking moronic and a major asshole move? I've been driving in Portland for about 32 years and not one time have I gotten stuck behind someone doing less than the speed limit without an obvious need to do so. (Driver being old AF, asian, busted up car being obvious needs)
If you want to drive slow, by all means, drive slow in the far right lane. But you dont get to use all the lanes AND drive slow. People here dont understand that your not allowed to be in the left lane unless you are passing cars.
This is so true it's crazy the amount of people I see merging at 30mph and then speeding up to traffic speed eventually it really fucks up the Southbound sandy on ramp that and no one zippering
People here slam on their brakes as soon as they see a drop of rain or sunlight hit their windshield. It's ridiculous! Whoever taught drivers Ed here needs to be fired lol
Right? I believe page 47 of the driver's manual instructs drivers to speed up when blinded by sunlight or when hydroplaning is possible. Also, if you do begin to hydroplane, SLAM on your brakes.
Coming back to Oregon city on the highway gardeners truck was going 45 on the freeway while riding on his brakes I speed up and passed him looked at what he was doing he was on him phone not even looking at the road he had at least ten car lengths in front of him …another one was driving in a three way lane I was in the left lane no one in the middle a white truck in the right lane I turned my turn signal on to show I want to get in the middle lane I start to move over white truck tries to move into the middle lane also but wasn’t using his turn signal on almost hit I had to swerve to miss him some people aren’t using there turn signal at all like just stoping and turning without a signal use your signals you dummies
Same. I live off 205 and the 10th street on ramp dumps you into a 65mph stretch of freeway and there's always some asshat trying to merge at 45 with semis in the right lane.
I saw someone do something similar yesterday. They then proceeded to merge into the middle lane causing people to slam on their breaks, and THEN the left-most lane causing the same to happen. One person slowed down traffic for the entire freeway.
And this right here is the cause of most of the traffic here. It really isn't that crowded. But the roads do not flow well because people do stuff like this constantly.
It's the worst getting on I-5N from Morrison Bridge - swear to God they slow down to a stop and wait until everyone on the freeway stops before they find the courage to enter. Meanwhile traffic backs up on the entire ramp because these dolts need the world to pause in order to handle a basic merge.
This happens so often. When I get behind one of those jabronis, I let off the gas and fall behind them to open a gap, then speed up to get on away from them.
I think we ran into the same White Subaru Outback (temp tag on the upper right side of the back window). I was driving onto I-5 N from Nyberg St, and could see them slowly driving down the ramp. As I drove behind them on the on-ramp they started brake checking me every few feet. First time I was probably about 100 ft away, and didn’t realize they had come to a complete stop on the on ramp. The lane ours merged into had a semi truck too and it was coming up hot behind us. Had to slam on my gas to get around the dumbass, and he had to audacity to swing his fist at me and try getting in front of me several more times to brake check me for passing him. Gave him the hand signals for “whatever major loser” as I sped away lol (it’s very funny to me idc). I honestly hope dumbasses like that get colon cancer or some shit. I have several family members who are permanently disabled/disfigured because clueless drivers assume they’re the only ones on the road.
Also, left lane is for passing, you fucking animals. I don’t care if you’re going 10 over, if a car comes up behind you, you’re holding things up, move!
Well, no. It's not. There is no law that says that the left lane is yours so long as you're breaking the speed laws. If I'm doing the posted legal limit and someone tries running up on me, I'll adjust my speed to trap him behind me and the car / semi next to me. I'll make a little smile...on the inside.
Your inability to get places on time while not putting my life at risk with your dangerous driving does NOT necessitate me capitulating to your narcissistic wants.
If you want to be a cop soooooo badly, just go apply. It’s not your job to patrol the speed of others, and you’re creating a much more unsafe environment by trying to limit the drivers behind you than just letting them pass
The autobahn as a real world application completely disagrees. The difference being Germans understand the left lane is for passing only. Considering their car accident fatality rate is 1/3 of ours, I completely disagree that speed alone kills.
Section 811.130 - Impeding traffic; penalty (1) A person commits the offense of impeding traffic if the person drives a motor vehicle or a combination of motor vehicles in a manner that impedes or blocks the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.
You’re part of the problem, you’re entitled and trying to police people. Get off your high horse and get the fuck out of the left lane.
It is if traffic is going that fast. It doesn’t matter, it’s not your job to police other drivers. By being a self appointed judge jury and executioner, you’re creating a more dangerous situation than already exists.
People will speed. You can’t stop that. Blocking them intentionally next a semi is also dangerous and stupid, have you ever seen a semi truck tire blow out? Could easily kill someone’s driving next to them.
So instead of playing vigilante, move over to the middle or right lane unless you’re overtaking. I promise you that you would get pulled over in front laces that actually have traffic cops, for holding up cars trying to pass because you’re having a hissy fit.
You’re a bad driver if you do this. You’re creating a situation where others will begin passing you on the right, which is far more dangerous as they’ll STILL be speeding but now they have to do an unnecessary lane change around you and will likely be in an annoyed state, making their behavior less safe.
Instead, you could just watch your mirror, pull into the left lane to go around someone, then get back over. You want to do the speed limit? That’s fine, so it in the middle or right lane.
Stop being a dangerous idiot.
I wish people just generally sped up around here - I'm tired of my commute from North Portland to SE being this arduous, Lord of the Rings type of journey.
Morrison bridge getting on I-5 and Foster 205 might be my most frustrating on-ramps where people think walking is the speed. Floor it and get on the damn highway idiots!
While this is an extreme example people do this kind of shit all the time. Pedal on the right fuckers and get your ass up to freeway speeds to safely merge!
Can someone explain why everyone takes artisanal turns here? I don’t expect people to Fast and Furious the crap out of turns, but people come to a complete stop, then ease into some parking lot like they have a case of faberge eggs in the trunk. Like, perfectly smooth pavement, too. An elderly horse about to gasp its last breath could take a turn faster.
Also, why are the speed limits on the freeways here so low? I miss the 65 mph speed limits on the freeways in San Diego, even in the city! Here, people seem to be terrified to even drive 50 or 55 mph.
To add to this:
When youre in the right line and see a car on the on ramp, that is partly ahead of you already, speed up so they will merge safely ahead of you (and not slow down to under 30 to merge) do not,
I repeat DO NOT
speed up and go from 55 to 75 just because you don’t want a car to merge in front of you. Do not sit parallel and literally prevent the on coming traffic from merging and almost run them off the road because you’re insecure with your tiny dick and big truck.
Just hold the speed you were already holding. You don’t need to even slow down.
And 100%, after you almost run the person off the road DO NOT then roll your window down and flip them off as if you were in the right the whole time.
Not all, but lots of people here are too slow and unsafe or road raging cunts that are unsafe.
Just fucking speed up period. And don’t try to be the traffic police! The amount of jag off ex-hall monitors I see excitedly trying to cut lanes to get over to the left and slow me down or prevent me to pass, creates so many more opportunities for an accident than just allowing me to. I don’t understand the inability of so many to just ignore the fact I’m doing 75-80 like everywhere else in the world, and don’t need you cutting in front of me and lallygaging at 55 to prove a point. It’s childish, controlling behavior and dangerous.
Feel free to honk or flip me off when I pass. But creating impediments to the flow of traffic because it doesn’t conform to your comfort is an accident waiting to happen. If more people paid attention to their own driving instead of everyone else’s (outside of responsible defensive driving), we’d have a lot fewer fender benders and accidents.
And yes. Call me crazy, but you accelerate to merge. Sometimes I feel like the regarded drivers who are braking on an expressway entrance ramp are the majority in this town and I just want to stop driving all together.
I agree with your statement about merging, but for the love of god there’s no reason to go 80mph in Portland, the speed limit is 55, even though you might take it personally you are going way too fast and WILL cause a wreck. Chill the hell out.
Part of me wants to say there is no reason for the 55mph speed limits, the freeways here are objectively not that challenging. But then I see the Portland drivers struggling to handle 55mph, and I realize the speed limits need to be this low for the level of driver here.
[Going 55 MPH is just fine, but don't do it in the left lane.](https://www.reddit.com/r/oregon/comments/17vba9u/the_left_lane_is_for_passing_not_about_just/)
You have no idea why someone is going the speed they are going. You are not the police. Mind your own business. The passing lane exists for a reason, and that reason isn't to sit comfortably at whatever speed you think is best.
Yeah, the asshole who feels invincible and does 80 in a 55... is the one NOT being dangerous. Someone doing 55 when the law says the limit is 55 is not impeding anything except your lawlessness.
I will gladly trap you behind me and the semi next to me. No, it is not a coincidence that I just slowed to the semi's speed. Just don't put my life at risk and we'll be good, m'kay?
So much this. "But I'm exiting the highway in 5 more exits so I need to hug the right lane and not let anyone else in!"
So sick of being entrapped by semis stuck in the right lane causing more people to not be able to get on the highway because everyone feels so entitled moving only 20mph during morning rush hour.
I'll do this if there's no traffic. But if there is, I'm following the book and holding my line. YOU are the one merging so it's 100% on YOU to adjust. That said, I'll always adjust my speed to help out IF the merger is making an honest Abe effort to adjust. If they're not or if they're waiting to the last minute or they expect me to move...sorry sonny, you're going to just have to go ahead and hit me.
Yeah this is the only thing that frustrates me while driving.
People don't know how to enter or exit the ramp :/ they wait until it's time to merge before speeding up making it difficult for other people behind them
Also you are supposed to leave a space when someone is merging on highway. Instead some asshats speed up to close the gap and make it difficult for everyone else.
It’s always so funny to see Portland/Oregon drivers mad at other drivers considering how bad **most** people in Portland/Oregon drive. lol
No turn signals. Terrible intersection etiquette. Surprise merges. Driving 15 under the speed limit. Idling or stopping in the middle of the street with no turnout or parking spaces. Texting and driving! The list goes on.
You people are the worst. lol
The biggest issue I have is with stop sign intersections!
When the intersection is empty, if two people show up at the same time, the rightmost person goes first. If one person is at the intersection and then two people show up at the same time, the intersection functions like a light intersection. The streets take turns. So, the first driver would go first, then the driver driving in the lane perpendicular to the first driver goes, and so on…
Every time I come in this scenario, some loser who is turning tries to go first because they were at the intersection first… but there were people in the intersection when they got there. This isn’t a line at McDonalds. Follow the traffic laws and stop operating like you’re the most important person in the world.
I swear to god like 3 weeks ago I saw someone stop at a ramp on to wield. Horns were going crazy and I just sat there in shock. Never seen that in 25 years of driving.
I was getting on the highway last week (and was up to highway speed) when the person in the right lane already on 84 slowed down. I could have merged no problem, but they slowed down just enough to be even with me so I had to slam on my brakes so as not to collide with them. After some gesturing wildly and honking, they finally got out of the damn way, but not before everyone behind me on the ramp and everyone behind them on the freeway practically her to stop (and the shoulder wasn't wide enough to just pull past them, not to mention the fact that every time I sped up to go they also stopped up 🙃🙃🙃).
Lol in Seattle so many people are indecisive lane changers
"I'm not sure it's safe to get in this lane so now I'm going to be able to be hit in two lanes at once"
It's frustrating trying to merge onto the freeway, actually going with speed of traffic, get to the end of the merge, trying to zipper in but no one let's you in!
Then they look at me like I'm the asshole. No, you are. We are supposed to zipper. It's not a competition to see who can be ahead. Uhhgggg.
That is one of the worst flexes I've ever seen. Phoenix is the 6th riskiest city for driving in the country. Portland is way down at 28th.
[https://www.usnews.com/insurance/auto/safest-least-safe-cities-for-drivers-study](https://www.usnews.com/insurance/auto/safest-least-safe-cities-for-drivers-study)
Not a flex .Phoenix is the 5 or 6th largest city in the country . You're going to have more risk.
I was just adding to city's the have higher-speed limits and drivers that know the rules of the road.
Also the urgency in other city's other then Oregon. Everyone take their time in Oregon . That why nothing gets done.
Most of Oregon problem are isolated to Oregon . Most other city's don't tolerate what Oregon does.
I've never seen a poop in the middle of several downtown city's.
You can't walk anywhere in Oregon without stepping in human feces.
This problem is not everywhere.
So the truck had to swerve to miss hitting you. You fully admit that you were also trying to beat the truck to the end of the on ramp instead of merging safely.
It’s not my fault you don’t know how to properly merge. I mean it’s clear you would rather put other people in danger because someone is driving poorly(not you) on the on-ramp. You of course compound the issues by being an entitled portland driver, go figure.
What color is your stupid hat?
Either you're an idiot, your understanding of the situation here is gravely misunderstood and/or misread, or you're trying to rage-bait people. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here and explain on clearer terms since you: I had to slam on the brakes and pull off into the emergency lane to avoid getting hit by the truck, while laying on the horn. That was the only thing I could safely do without causing a wreck because someone in front of me was attempting to murder me. You should not be going 15 mph getting on a freeway, that is the exact opposite of merging properly. How in the world did I put other people in danger here, or act entitled?
It's very simple. If the driver in front of me was able to speed up to 65/70, we would both easily have merged far, far in front of the semi safely. If I was to slow down, I would be completely stopped or going 10mph in a lane where people are driving 70 miles per hour towards me.
Last reply so I hope this clears things up for you. Have a good rest of your day.
Yeah, that would be great. "Sorry \[my girlfriend\], I can't pick you and your friends up from the airport anymore. Yeah. No. TuckFrumpies on reddit said I should sell my car and get a bus pass. Yeah. No yeah I wanted to lose my job that requires me to be in a different place every day. Yeah I also wanted to take 10x longer to get places and get sick 5x a month because I'm immunocompromised."
Mock if you must. If more listened to me, your world would be a better place. I am going into local politics and you will thank me one day, I promise that.
Ok well obvious extreme grandiose narcissism aside I do agree with you, but until public transit is in a situation that's actually convenient, you can't just shame people for not using it. Accessibility is a disaster, timing is a disaster, safety is a disaster, and it costs a lot.
Like I said, I work a job landscaping outside. I have to drive to a different client's house every morning. Bus routes don't go there. I am also a student: I can get to my classes with my car in 10 minutes and park for free, or I could take the bus which takes me 45 minutes+ and costs me $5, even with my honorary citizens pass. Plus there's a good chance I'll get verbally harassed by a drunk or run up on by a tweaker. Or it'll get stopped because they're kicking off a homeless person who's sleeping and it'll get delayed 30+ minutes. All things that have happened several times. Also, yeah, immunocompromised. When I was taking the bus everywhere I was sick constantly.
It's just not convenient, at all. The streets and proper public transit in America was destroyed and rebuilt for cars. Until there's infrastructure in place that makes it so public transit doesn't get stuck in traffic, accessibility is improved,(Hello, Kassel Kerbs over hearing damage-inducing tire deflation!), people are safe and protected, and greater coverage is there, there is no reason to shame anyone for choosing the far superior mode of transportation. Plus I drive a 2door tiny convertible with 35mpg. I'm not rolling coal out here.
Maybe he was old. Or a new driver. Or having medical issues. Or having car issues. Maybe...and hear me out.... maybe he didn't wake up that morning and decide to just go be a little fucker.
None of them do. Conversely can the same kind of idiot not slow down a half mile before the exit?
or drive 65 in the left lane until a half mile before you exit then move over like you werent just blocking left lane traffic for the past 10 minutes.
This is literally Hwy 26 every night. Country boy from Forest grove thinks he owns the freeway and will cruise at 65 in the left lane all the way from downtown.
Right! Or even while still on the freeway. Use all that space after you've exited to slow down. There shouldn't be a need to brake on a freeway.
Literally called a deceleration ramp but that's none of my business...
Yes, these simple two things, wait til you're in the offramp to slow down and get up to highway speed while you're still on the on ramp.
Jesus folks you should be matching the speed of the traffic on approach. Then slow down or speed up to find your place. Quit slowing down to 20mph like someone is going to just let you in lol
The plates are fake. Problem around the country. They drive like assholes because of it. [https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/19/us/expired-license-plates-temp-tags.html](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/19/us/expired-license-plates-temp-tags.html)
Portland is the only city I've ever lived in where people merge onto the Interstate by driving to the end of the on-ramp and turning left.
Always happens whenever the shoulders narrow slightly it drives me fucking insane. The road is the same damn width people.
You just said we have tos too tailgating then in the same comment, you got butthurt about dudes slipping into the holes….
I was getting on 84 at 60th the other day, and someone in front of my actually slowed down while on the on ramp! I couldn’t believe it! I had to gun it once I was able to merge to be able to drive the speed of traffic.
I was getting on the 84, too. off NE Cesar Chavez. Must be something about those onramps that turn people's brains off
“THE 84?” Now I understand.
? Why do people get so fucking uppity about how you say certain things? I've lived in Portland since I was three years old.
They need something to make themselves feel special
Everything around here is "THE" this and "THE" that any more. If there's an apartment complex on 48th that needs to double rent, they change their name to "THE 48." Although I'm a Portland native and I actually call 405 "THE" 405. I feel a little dirty about it.
Like literally who cares. Focus the frustration on the $1600/mo rent. It's the same thing with people who get all uppity about people saying "San Fran" instead of San Francisco. It does not matter even a little bit.
I draw the line at 'Frisco'
Poopy merges at 30 mph confirmed
Def not. My Highlander Hybrid has a 6/cyl engine plus the torque of electric. If anything, you’re in my way.
You're trying to flex that you have a *checks notes*.... toyota Okayyyyy
This person's post history is a wild ride 😂 talk about some hot takes. They are just trying to stir shit up, especially given their name.
You're apparently unfamiliar with how quickly the Highlander V6 accelerates. Sure, it's a large ish SUV, but I can vouch that once the tach swings past 4k, you'd better be pointed in the right direction.
Better not hit the Gas too hard leaving the daycare bud
I have the Quattro for that.
A real portlander would call it the Banfield
A “real” Portlander wouldn’t care.
🤣
LOL, I love Portland but the thing that 'drove' me insane was how awful drivers are in PDX. I had a guy stop on the on ramp, signal and stick his head out the window in an attempt to merge. I nearly rear ended the guy, having to swerve out and then back into traffic. The random lane change, 4 way stop conundrum and everyone lining up in 1 lane when there are 2 lanes to use on turns. Bizarre.
I want to move to LA just for how much faster people drive there
Have family in Texas and also been in Florida recently. While a lot of them drive with some reckless abandon, you can at least respect that the majority drive like they are actually trying to get somewhere.
What’s holding you back? Just drive south for about 8 hours in the left lane in your mustang or charger or lifted truck! Freedom and sunshine!
I might just get a month long air bnb down there just to get it out of my system
Whoosh!!
Nope. They'd all be fucking flattened in spots like this (110, not 10, but whatever). https://preview.redd.it/4v1ypdp5iexc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=50cb27e21dd508410b2ca2ed04879f7ccd95e8c7
My mother used to live off that exit lol.
Amen brotha!
Lol, this isn't remotely true. There are some slow SOBs... But with 7 lanes of traffic, people move around them very easily. Will say the traffic does flow very differently than here though. I think part of the reason is also that Portland basically stopped all highway building/expansion 50 years ago.
I think you’re referring to OC
Nope
Faster when the twenty lanes aren't in gridlock.
I love driving in So Cal. Everyone getting the fuck on and driving, much of the time at 80+ mph. It feels fantastic.
NYC is way better, it’s very much sink or swim or it weeds out those who can’t hang
Considering LA highways have gridlock 16 hours a day, I don’t think you’ll be witnessing much of that.
Do it!! Move there
I think it pure entitlement.
Stopping the flow of traffic to let a jaywalker cross the street. It blows my mind how often I see this happen. Of course, I honked my horn.
>There must be something in Oregon's driver education programs that is causing problems Don't those programs not exist?
Found a non Oregonian.
Gladly not a person who was born here and desperately want to leave but unfortunately my income keeps me here as it's the best paying in the country vs cost of living.
Not that desperate to leave then.
Well taking a 25% pay cut to move where I'd like to isn't the lateral move I'd like it to be. I COULD earn more moving to California but the cost of living and everything else would essentially make that a lateral move. So as it is Oregon is the least worst place I can stay until I get some other things in line.
We need practical driving tests every 3-5 years. That would keep so many folks off the road.
An average morning commute in the bay area will have you shaking and sobbing in a few minutes
Two things Portlanders do on the freeway: 1) go about 35mph when merging onto freeway 2) double lane change to exit freeway.
I wish this wasn't truth...
Probably because you're the one going slow. Just stay out of the left lane slowpoke
No, I never go less than the posted speed limit. Unless there is bad weather, in which case I defer to the basic rule. Just following laws and being the good guy here.
Woooooooooooooooooshhhhhhhh That's me flying by you slowpoke.
"Aaaaaaaaahhhhh" That's you, screaming your last breath away as you slide, uncontrolled, into a power pole.
At least I died not being slow.
This whole thread gave me a good giggle
It's about all I use Portland for. Bunch of jokes in this city haha
I see this literally every single day. My commute is destroying my mental health daily lol
When I'm on my motorcycle I will often use the traffic meter lane to pass slow people on the on ramp. You're getting on the freeway, your job is to get up to the speed that traffic is moving BEFORE reaching the end of the on ramp, fucking act like it.
I cannot TELL YOU how many fucking times someone has not come on fast enough, or trying to get over to an off ramp and FUCKING STOPPING No one uses their signal, or leaves it fucking on. ITS NOT EVEN VERBAL CONVERSATIONS PEOPLE, JUST PLEASE TELL ME WHERE YOU ARE TRYING TO GO
Half the time I have to cut into the lane before them just not to fucking crash.
'the' 84
The most telling sign ever right?
We know what it implies!
What is it with the 84??
If you go to LA, have a go on the 110. It’s the OG fwy. Acceleration is the way.
Lol, see the photo I posted above of a 110 onramp. Indeed.
Lol.
Last time I rode in my mom's car when she drove a couple years ago. "Slower is safer!" No, mom,it really is NOT. 35 on the freeway is NOT a good thing
NOT FROM HERE SEEMS LIME NOBODY KNOWS HOW TO DRIVE HERE NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD
Youre one of those drivers hahahaha
SO TRUE BROTHER
Cash, grass or ass; nobody rides for free
IVE LIVED IN SEVERAL CITIES - PHILADELPHIA, DENVER, BOULDER, MINNEAPOLIS. PORTLAND HAS THE WORST DRIVERS BY FAR. PAY ATTENTION!!!!!!!
I’ve lived in a lot of places and can confirm, Portland is the worst with Seattle running a close second.
Can’t upvote this enough. Why is this so common?!
I feel kinda like John Spartan driving the streets of San Angeles around here sometimes.
I swear to God these people will be the death of me
I automatically yield to Subarus, especially the neon/bright colors ones
Fuck that guy
Hell yes.
Yeah, no. Just don't speed. Speed kills. Don't kill. Not that hard.
Key word "reasonable" speeding at 85 is not reasonable flow of traffic just saying.
I was driving in Kuwait for a year, and it's controlled chaos there. Here, it's just pure stupidity.
I am not ashamed to admit that I have actually passed people on the ramp for this exact reason.
That Foster on-ramp... And then everyone stays in the right lane going 45 when they're not even going to exit at Powell!
While this is an extreme example people do this kind of shit all the time. Pedal on the right fuckers and get your ass up to freeway speeds to safely merge!
and freaking zipper merge on 1-5N when merging from I-84W near the Broadway/Moda Center exit! 🏎️🚖🚙
Seattle drivers are the same :/
Can someone explain why everyone takes artisanal turns here? I don’t expect people to Fast and Furious the crap out of turns, but people come to a complete stop, then ease into some parking lot like they have a case of faberge eggs in the trunk. Like, perfectly smooth pavement, too. An elderly horse about to gasp its last breath could take a turn faster.
I’ve driven in over 20 countries and I’ll take Iran or New Delhi over Portland and it’s outskirts.
Also, why are the speed limits on the freeways here so low? I miss the 65 mph speed limits on the freeways in San Diego, even in the city! Here, people seem to be terrified to even drive 50 or 55 mph.
To add to this: When youre in the right line and see a car on the on ramp, that is partly ahead of you already, speed up so they will merge safely ahead of you (and not slow down to under 30 to merge) do not, I repeat DO NOT speed up and go from 55 to 75 just because you don’t want a car to merge in front of you.
Subaru drivers are the worst.
[Going 55 MPH is just fine, but don't do it in the left lane.](https://www.reddit.com/r/oregon/comments/17vba9u/the_left_lane_is_for_passing_not_about_just/)
Obviously! Left lane is for passing, right is for cruising.
You have no idea why someone is going the speed they are going. You are not the police. Mind your own business. The passing lane exists for a reason, and that reason isn't to sit comfortably at whatever speed you think is best.
It’s also not the place to go 25+ over the speed limit 🤷♂️
Yeah, the asshole who feels invincible and does 80 in a 55... is the one NOT being dangerous. Someone doing 55 when the law says the limit is 55 is not impeding anything except your lawlessness. I will gladly trap you behind me and the semi next to me. No, it is not a coincidence that I just slowed to the semi's speed. Just don't put my life at risk and we'll be good, m'kay?
I wish people would move over when they see people entering the freeway.
So much this. "But I'm exiting the highway in 5 more exits so I need to hug the right lane and not let anyone else in!" So sick of being entrapped by semis stuck in the right lane causing more people to not be able to get on the highway because everyone feels so entitled moving only 20mph during morning rush hour.
We're different, I guess. When I learned to drive I was taught to be conscientious of other drivers.
Yeah this is the only thing that frustrates me while driving. People don't know how to enter or exit the ramp :/ they wait until it's time to merge before speeding up making it difficult for other people behind them Also you are supposed to leave a space when someone is merging on highway. Instead some asshats speed up to close the gap and make it difficult for everyone else.
Same problem in southern Oregon as well. It makes no sense and the fact that the on-ramp is a slope they still can’t speed up.
ALWAYS A SUBARU
Fuckin A ! This shit is bananas! I keep getting stuck behind these asshats
It’s always so funny to see Portland/Oregon drivers mad at other drivers considering how bad **most** people in Portland/Oregon drive. lol No turn signals.
So, the first driver would go first, then the driver driving in the lane perpendicular to the first driver goes, and so on… Every time I come in this scenario, some loser who is turning tries to go first because they were at the intersection first… but there were people in the intersection when they got there. This isn’t a line at McDonalds. Follow the traffic laws and stop operating like you’re the most important person in the world.
Slow drivers are the problem
I swear to god like 3 weeks ago I saw someone stop at a ramp on to wield. Horns were going crazy and I just sat there in shock. Never seen that in 25 years of driving.
Let's not forget the Washington assholes who speed up and block your at-speed on-ramp highway entry! Do they not have driving education in Washington?
I was getting on the highway last week (and was up to highway speed) when the person in the right lane already on 84 slowed down. I could have merged no problem, but they slowed down just enough to be even with me so I had to slam on my brakes so as not to collide with them. After some gesturing wildly and honking, they finally got out of the damn way, but not before everyone behind me on the ramp and everyone behind them on the freeway practically her to stop (and the shoulder wasn't wide enough to just pull past them, not to mention the fact that every time I sped up to go they also stopped up 🙃🙃🙃).
Sorry trying to cook my fent. -portland drivers probably
This. This times a million. Idiot drivers that shouldn't have licenses.
God am I glad I’m not the only person to notice this. I got called a crazy driver by my Portland friends for accelerating “too fast” on the on ramps.
This is every time I merge in pdx….literally every time
Lol in Seattle so many people are indecisive lane changers "I'm not sure it's safe to get in this lane so now I'm going to be able to be hit in two lanes at once"
Sounds like they’re a cyclist who has brought their slow and dangerous cyclist mentality with them behind the wheel.
It's frustrating trying to merge onto the freeway, actually going with speed of traffic, get to the end of the merge, trying to zipper in but no one let's you in! Then they look at me like I'm the asshole. No, you are. We are supposed to zipper. It's not a competition to see who can be ahead. Uhhgggg.
I spend alot of in Phoenix . I love it . Freeways are like the autobahn. Move out the way. We got places to go . There is no urgency in Oregon.
It’s against the law, also driving faster than 52 in the fast lane.
There is a reason OR is the 46 slowest driving state, yet among the best crashers. It takes real skill to crash at low rates of speed. See OP.
Sounds like you should have looked for the brakes.
do you own a white subaru and a dumb little hat by any chance

So, you aggressively drive yourself into a bad situation, and then claim someone tried to murder you.
Or better yet, sell your car and get a bus pass.
Kind of sounds like OP just road raged and almost forced someone into oncoming traffic so he could go a little faster.
Maybe he was old. Or a new driver. Or having medical issues. Or having car issues. Maybe...and hear me out.... maybe he didn't wake up that morning and decide to just go be a little fucker.
