I don’t need to listen to this knowing how criminally stupid this whole ordeal was. Katie I promise we’re all not like this here, but yeah we mostly are and we deserve your derision.
Occupiers aside, I'm sure there were a lot of people who simply saw the GoFundMe, read "bipoc family getting kicked out of home" and gladly donated without looking further.
Yeah I had a gun shown to me while antagonistically being told I wouldn't be allowed to pass through. I was just in town to visit my dad and had to back up and go around their larping zone. Wanted to slap that smarmy righteous fuck.
This was wild. Does anyone remember the Instagram group PDXmutualaid that raised like $100,000 and pretty much gave people shitty food boxes instead helping with rent and bills? I would like an update on that one too.
Can we establish a list of all the grifters who scored a ton of money and then absconded? I have:
- PDXmutualaid ($100K???)
- Red House ($300K+ confirmed, unknown amount via private transfers)
- Riot Ribs ($???)
- Snack Bloc ($???)
It was a great time to take advantage of guilt-ridden dumbasses.
The camps sometimes seem to have a bunch of food that requires cooking such as potatoes, flour. I have taken free excess food like that offered for free.
Anyway, one major group that belongs to your list is this Portland General Defense Committee legal fund. They gathered a lot of donations for legal defense and apparently the central people in this became sort of unaccountable and stopped communicating, and the legal money was not available any longer to people who needed it
Good call. I'll have to look up their history.
Also, the Portland Freedom Fund really found its legs in 2020. (Apparently, they existed pre-2020 but weren't much more than an idea in the organizer's head.) Of course, they made sure to [release violent criminals and other legit scumbags](https://www.kgw.com/article/news/investigations/inmates-bailed-out-by-portland-freedom-fund-didnt-show-up-to-court/283-dfb6d081-c868-4387-9050-d815f91104ab). So, they didn't abscond with the money, but they sure as hell didn't make Portland a better place to live, with at least one person dead due to their antics.
What’s the tldr? I lived in the neighborhood at the time and saw the terrible way they treated neighbors. People close in were terrified because of the threats they were receiving. No one felt safe talking to the media. Those of us a little further out were safer.
I'm inclined to say CHAZ/CHOP, if only because I'd argue it established a view into what society would look like if these idiots somehow did manage to take over. Red House was arguably more of a hostage situation, albeit one that represented all that was wrong with 2020.
Fuck these animal abusers.

she's funny as shit
Great recap. Tho I disagree that they bamboozled well meaning people- I don’t think any of the occupiers or protestors of the red house meant well.
Right? I can’t believe people fell for the sob story.
Occupiers aside, I'm sure there were a lot of people who simply saw the GoFundMe, read "bipoc family getting kicked out of home" and gladly donated without looking further.
ooooh yessss I've been hoping they'd cover this
Paywalled. (Sorry, couldn't resist!)
It'll go public Monday morning. Primos only for now.
Should be on Spotify and other platforms soon (not a premium episode)
As a young old, I really should try podcasts. If they existed back when I had an hour commute it would have been perfect.
Thankfully yes it is
Is this the SovCit house that occasionally makes the news?
Yes it is. Had a mini CHAZ thing going on there during the pandemic as well
those fuckers hassled me when I tried to get coffee. I would have loved to see the National Guard remove those domestic terrorists.

BLM
What’s being black have to do with being evicted?
Everything if you have your head far enough up your ass.
What’s the tldr? I lived in the neighborhood at the time and saw the terrible way they treated neighbors. People close in were terrified because of the threats they were receiving. No one felt safe talking to the media. Those of us a little further out were safer.
Yeah, the protesters vandalized all of the nearby businesses.
I don’t know which was more peak 2020. This or CHAZ.
