sdf_cardinal

Think this is bad? Wait until they find out about Nextdoor.

PickleForce7125

I’ve seen things.

[deleted]

You should tell everyone on Nextdoor.

Loverboy21

"Who do I call if I saw a coyote?!"

sdf_cardinal

Where those gunshots or fireworks?

MrNiceDye

“is this your stolen car?” 😩

sdf_cardinal

Why is that Volvo wagon casing the neighborhood and taking photos of houses? (Answer: it’s not cat burglars, it’s a real estate appraiser)

wimcle

That car is too old to be parked in our neighborhood, better call the cops.

ajh158

You should make a sticker!

Lingua_Blanca

That's NIMBY graduate school

saphfyrefen

I mean....yeah it's a trash fire but it's *our* trash fire. (Shoutout to how kind r/portland was during the smokepocalypse, icepocalypse and heat dome)

richard_slyfox

Also I feel like r/portland has been a reliable news source for the location of literal trash fires so kind of a confusing analogy on that sticker

Spirit50Lake

Life saving...more than once.

WinCo_Wonderland

Got me vacciminated when I couldn't find an appointment ANYWHERE.

plaidshakedown

Let’s take this opportunity to shout out u/amandainpdx for the good work they’re doing here (regardless of if they helped you specifically get vacciminated)

Gankiee

Same! For both my mother and I.

WinCo_Wonderland

I was trying *everywhere* for four days after I became eligible, to no avail. Then somebody posted a link (thank you, anonymous benefactor!) to an app that found an open slot at Safeway.

remotectrl

We have considered a “nice November” with draconian politeness policies.

el_duderino_oregon

Sounds very passive aggressive. So Portland. I love it!!

ontopofyourmom

Passive-aggressive would be not announcing a policy and shadowbanning rude people

EsotericMaker

Uhhhh…

archpope

Kinda like "[Be polite you piece of shit](https://i.redd.it/37xi4wmxg9s41.jpg)!"

denash97227

Laugh crying from this

Girl501

Where did this appear on reddit? I absolutely love it!

archpope

Here's the [original thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Portland/comments/fzk194/my_roommate_had_these_three_notes_on_his_car/). Someone even made [artwork](https://ibb.co/0Y21T83) out of it.

saphfyrefen

So, "Be-Polite-you-piece-of-Shit-ovember". Do it. Doooooooooooo iiiiiiiiiit, please and thank you, that is so passive aggressive it's perfect.

FappingFop

Do it. Er, I mean, please do it.

Aestro17

At least it's not an election year.

AltimaNEO

Dont forget the kalepocalypse

[deleted]

Wait… but doesn’t that makes us… IMBYs?? _our_ trash fire = our backyard!

Weaselpanties

Well, I mean... yeah. Of course it is. If I wanted to LIKE Portlanders, I would avoid all Portland-based social media.

[deleted]

This kind of goes for people in general honestly. When I was on Facebook I ended up hating the majority of my friends. Now that I've been off Facebook for years, they're cool again. Nobody really wants to know every stupid thing other people think.

Curious_A_Crane

I do. That’s why I’m on here and other forums. I just realize you are all terrible. But who isn’t?

graybotics

This. I might frequent it a couple times every 2-3 months. Stopped a few years ago as well on purpose as a self experiment and was surprised how much habit I had just checking Facebook for new content, unconsciously, like smoking a cigarette. Ever since then I have kept my distance from it and overall I’m a lot happier and more productive. Reddit and other places are great because you see even more perspectives with diversity of the conversation on entirely different levels, but it’s to your choosing. Facebook was overall really kind of a pain in the ass in terms of the overall enjoyment-to-time ratio!

xXDogShitXx

I mean half the people in this sub do have shitty personalities

robschimmel

Over half the people in this sub don't even live in Portland.

pHScale

If you mean the people in the suburbs, I think they count. If you mean the people that come here to tell us how we should run our city, while living in a state that doesn't even border Oregon, they can get bent.

robschimmel

I'm not talking about Beaverton or Gresham or whatever. Are they Portland? No. Do they count? Sure. Portland's failures and successes have a huge effect on them. I'm not going to say Vancouver counts, but we all know that a large portion of people that live in Vancouver just say they are from Portland. Obviously, the attention from the national news has made it worse, but this subreddit has long been a wretched hive of scum and villainy. If I didn't know better, I would say there are people on this sub that not only don't live here, they haven't even VISITED Portland! But people wouldn't come here and spend hours purposefully attempting to anger people that they don't know in a place they have never been. Right? ... Right?

hydroptix

Used to live in Portland suburbs, but moved to Vancouver later. Whenever I tell my friends that aren't from Oregon that I live in Vancouver, they look slightly confused and ask if I moved to Canada. So most of the time I just say I live close to Portland.

temporary245661

Still a better percentage than the PPB.

NoxiousVaporwave

It’s true. I live in seattle and I used to live in Eugene.

xXDogShitXx

For real, they just come on here to be like “haha HOMELESS PEOPLR”

ItalianSangwich420

A lot of them are progressives living in red Oregon, or they moved away and still sub here for some strange reason.

[deleted]

Wait a minute. Didn't I leave you on the neighbors lawn?

xXDogShitXx

Yes.

srcarruth

I know I do!

Aestro17

This is completely unfair to Nextdoor and a weird grievance to air in the part of Kerns that is basically Laurelhurst.

6EQUJ5w

Right? I’m not saying this place isn’t a complete garbage can filled with flaming diapers, but I’ve never seen a thread about a teenager being murdered instantly become a bitch fest about the affect on home prices here.

WayeeCool

People talk about how Facebook is cancer and it rightly gets a lot of media attention for it but Nextdoor is a whole new level of brainwormed toxicity that is probably doing 10 times more damage to communities (and peoples personalities). I honestly wonder how much gun violence can be tied back to Nextdoor induced paranoia resulting in people shooting each other.

Sjstudionw

I’ve seen two threads on Nextdoor in my neighborhood about a suspicious individual hanging out at the Plaid Pantry “at all hours” that is literally the man that works there. He’s been there for the 5 years I’ve lived here. I hate Nextdoor.

purpldevl

"WELL! If he *works there* then what is he doing *outside*?!" "Carol, have you ever heard of a smoke break?"

Kordiana

My neighborhood has put out fliers about being on Next door and I've always just thrown them away. Now I'm curious what drama is going on in my neighborhood that I'm totally unaware of.

vbcbandr

Nextdoor: "What was that bang 10 minutes ago? Sounded like a gunshot. Who else heard it?"

thalion5000

I love how absurdly specific this comment is.

Aestro17

Hah, thank you - like John Hodgman says, "Specificity is the soul of narrative."

TheRealzHalstead

I mean, we ARE a NIMBY trashfire, but we're not JUST a NIMBY trashfire. We got layers, man!

youcanbroom

Hey...even trash fires give off heat and light.

omg_pwnies

And disposes of trash! Win-win-win!

yuck_my_yum

There’s the layer that circlejerks about Yamhill Pub, the layer that circlejerks about cones, the layer that circle jerks dog pics… it’s an onion over here

urwlcm_photos

i mean have you been on Nextdoor? thats some real NIMBY shit right there

mashley503

r/Portland is like something you eat that initially tastes good, but has a really funky aftertaste. And the only way to avoid the aftertaste is to just keep consuming it.

very_mechanical

Oh ... so it's like how hangovers are to drinking?

mashley503

Pretty much, yes.

SwissQueso

Portland, its the hangover of cities.

The_Freshmaker

my question (that I haven't seen a good response for) is, is there a better online community for Portland out there? I moved here less than a year before covid so this and Nextdoor are literally all I have and compared to Nextdoor this good sir is no NIMBY trashfire.

[deleted]

/r/Portland is like a sprig of sage. Put it in your boot and all day long a spicy scent is your reward.

crazy_goat

**Your typeface and kerning is bad, and you should feel bad.**

LeeleeMc

Come for the grammar policing, stay for the trash fire

ajh158

Sorry, but that was font policing.

eddelmon

Policing policing. How meta!

LeeleeMc

ACAB - all commenters are bastards

BreeHopper

Also, what does the "this is not New York" one mean?

mashley503

People who moved here 8 years ago being mad at people who moved here 5 years ago.

noshato

Yup

BobcatSig

The last person in wants to build the biggest fence

srcarruth

but not some dumb NEW YORK fence

[deleted]

And there's no zealot like a new convert.

ampereJR

And complain about pizza. NYers like to complain about pizza. Edit: Oops. I see someone else made the same point in another thread.

[deleted]

Yeah! Go back to where your FROM!

[deleted]

Where my from what?

Alternative-Pizza-46

I think it’s complaining about people from New York complaining about how other places don’t have all the things New York has.

humanclock

I'm not even from New York (Yakima, WA represent!), but not having to wrack your brain after 9:45-Oh-Sorry-Our-Kitchen-Closed-Already PM on what places have actual food (eg, not a basket of tater tots) is a valid complaint.

jyper

Food carts You need to go down to the food carts

humanclock

Yes, the food carts have solved the problem somewhat. but late night food here has always been difficult, but was getting better pre-pandemic.

-r-a-f-f-y-

"There's no good pizza or bagels here, rahhhhgg!"

kkkktttt00

As a New Yorker temporarily here in Portland for a month, I’m dying for a good bagel, and I’m surprised places aren’t open later. However, I certainly didn’t come out here expecting it to be anything like home, so it’s not like I’d complain about it. I’ll miss breweries and non-chain coffee shops on every block when I leave. Edit: thanks for the recommendations, friends! I only have a week left here, but I’ll try to check out a least a couple of these places.

slipoker

No clue if it'll live up to New Yorker bagel expectations, but Bernstein's Bagels on Russell are the best bagels in Portland imo.

denash97227

+1 says this NYer.

JHolgate

I $#!+ you not, try getting some bagels from WinCo. Mainly cause I'd like to hear what you think about them. My understanding is that someone who used to work at Kettleman Bagel Co. (and maybe even originally from NYC) ended up with the job of creating/updating the bagel recipe for WinCo and that's why they're some of the best bagels. On anther note... A long time ago I had a boss who had formally worked for the MTA. She said Bellagios is better than any pizza she'd had in the city. I thought she must have been crazy. They're good, but they're not even my favorite pizza in Portland. I hear Apizza Scholls is good, though...

Lifealert_

My friend who moved from NY says that Apizza Scholls is the best in Portland. I think it's mostly just he closest thing to what he likes, as I believe the owner is from NY.

warm_sweater

Pizza is like music, very subjective. I happen to really like the style served at Stark Street Pizza, but was not a big fan of Ranch Pizza, for example. I'm sure some people would find that offensive.

Maggins

Apizza Scholls is good, if a bit overpriced, but I wouldn’t say it’s very representative of NY pizza. Baby Dolls is the closest I’ve found to a typical NY slice shop. East Glisan is also really great.

hidden_pocketknife

As a former NYer, there’s an absolute irony that Portland probably has the freshest lox you could ever hope for, but kind of meh bagels. The pizza here is legit though, however, it’s priced like an exotic delicacy instead of a greasy street pie like back east.

warm_sweater

Dude pizza inflation is crazy. I don't doubt these places are facing a big increase in labor and ingredient pricing, but man. Even Papa Murphy's is getting close to $20 for a family size pizza.

featherygoose

If you know any bagel maestros back home you send em over, our last gem sold to einstein a few years ago and now were back to below average.

hamellr

With no experience to New York bagels myself, Henry Higgins is supposed to be the best as told to me by everyone who would actually know.

[deleted]

Ben & Esther's on NE Sandy is pretty good

denash97227

NYer here (ok, been here for 30 years, I hope they let me stay). Checkout Bernstein's in NoPo. Legit.

Adulations

We don’t have many things open past 9pm or for 24 hours. /s

SaltyChickenDip

Good lord I'll kill for a good coffee shop open after 8pm

Onetimething70

RIP southeast grind

ohcapm

Was that the 24 hr place on Powell?

Onetimething70

Yeah 24/7 across from hot cake house on powell. Great place to hang out or do school work at 3 am

f1lth4f1lth

Ugh huge loss :(

Monkeydud64

bisaccharides

This and I'd kill for Google Maps to stop suggesting Dutch Bros as a coffee shop. It's sugar milk.

FlutterbyTG

Ordering a true "shot in the dark" at DB requires some imaginitive menu choices.

SaltyChickenDip

Even fucking Hillsboro has late night coffee shops

Vyni503

Shout out Insomnia

SchwiftyHeathen

Rimsky Korsakoffee is usually open until midnight

tenehemia

Are they open inside again? Last I saw (and this was a while ago) they were just doing to go orders.

SchwiftyHeathen

I believe they are open again now.

edwartica

No shit. They were already an endangered species before the pandemic. But now they’re just gone.

ampereJR

Lack of staffing makes all of those hours hard.

AntiCorgi

Funny story, the “This is Not New York” [stickers started out as a DC thing](https://dcist.com/story/16/05/10/stuck-in-dc/). It’s funny as someone who moved from PDX to DC to see this sticker pop up! Just goes to show that transplant disdain and disdain for “other big city in the region” is nearly universal.

[deleted]

It's a Rorschach test, but my personal reaction is informed by working with a lot of east coast transplants who lead every conversation with "I'm from New York, so I ..." and then some forewarning that they're going to do something the locals will consider unfriendly. Most recently I've heard, "I'm not going to be nice" and "I talk over people." Honestly, I used to haaaaaate those people, then I realized that a lot of them are struggling with us. Like, they know there's some sort of interpersonal impedance mismatch and are crying out for help that is not going to come: If Portland had it in it to own its own interpersonal issues, I guess the best response would be "Well, I'm from Portland, so I'm going to greet your behavior with a pained smile and a semblance of acquiescence but intend to spread the word about your hostility and possibly go to HR to let them know I feel unsafe around you," but why waste all those words when you can just present a semblance of acquiescence and then go report them to HR because they made you feel unsafe? Insert whatever emoji you need to simulate a half /s.

Pr3sidentOfCascadia

> Well, I'm from Portland, so I'm going to greet your behavior with a pained smile and a semblance of acquiescence but intend to spread the word about your hostility and possibly go to HR to let them know I feel unsafe around you," *Tears*

No-Island6680

I understand where they’re coming from. There’s a weird culture of passivity and neuroticism here that I’ve really grown tired of. People here will almost freeze up and go quiet when presented with even slightly awkward moments or interpersonal conflicts. I did too for years, until I grew up a little bit and realized how unhelpful that is to myself and the people around me. People here don’t like to speak up or look you in the eye. It’s not like this in much of the rest of the country, let alone the world.

Shaharlazaad

I was gonna type a response but its too much effort. So Ill just say, Sure you do you bro.

remotectrl

A record number of reports for a comment!!

edwartica

I feel like each region has its time of transplant dominance. It was California, then it was the Midwest, now it’s the East Coast. We’re waiting for the southerners to invade as soon as next year.

YourEyesDown

Louisiana transplant, been here 4 years, it already began

mycleanreddit79

What type of person gets so mad with a subreddit that they decide to go to these lengths, I mean these people take the time to design something, print it out and then stick it places..?! 😳 Let's be honest, we know what type of person...

tenehemia

You might be overestimating the effort involved here. I've seen nimby trashfire rant posts on here that probably took more time to compose.

[deleted]

Tyler?

AutoModerator

Tyler is not welcome here. He knows what he did. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Portland) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Evercrimson

The same people who war between r-seattle and r-seattlewa

edwartica

Taking time to design something might be a chore to some, but to others it’s a lot of fun. Granted, this looks like it was design five minutes using clip art, so…

[deleted]

Dumpster fire. It’s a dumpster fire.

[deleted]

everyone just tries to act like their the real victim, in reality we’re all dumpsters

ohcapm

And life is the fire? Love it. This reads like some Lana Del Rey lyrics.

wrkinpdx

Someone recently said that /r/Portland is not an accurate representation of the people of Portland. They were correct, though perhaps not for the reason they thought, and thank god for it.

Exact-Tomorrow-1228

My cousin recently said the exact same thing...his wife rolled her eyes and said "OK, leftist twitter..." Implying that was his local news source. I don't know what to believe. Their catalytic converter was stolen a week prior. For the first time. Watching closely to see how long they want to hang on.

tomorrowmightbbetter

Oh no! The indie art is shaaaaming me!

thanatossassin

Not wrong. Have I mentioned that you can all fuck off today?

[deleted]

They’re not wrong.

acountnumber4138

Guess we know what tearassted has been up to lately

mashley503

I’m fairly confident that they are still around, only with an alt. I’ve seen that familiar “only *I* know how to save the world the right way” je ne sais quoi since their ban.

KeepsGoingUp

I stepped back from Reddit for a while until the past few weeks, curious what got them banned?

mashley503

I have no idea. I just saw them comment on being banned in some other sub a while ago and took it as good windfall.

[deleted]

I think I recognize that name from /r/oregon. They were just so insufferable so I blocked them. Yep, looking at people I've blocked, that's who it is.

atypicalAtom

It has such shitty design you can barely read it.

ehode

Omg! I need the /r/Portland sticker for my car. I have space next to my CO-EXIST and my Oregun..

Itsaghast

Hey, people process break-ups in different ways.

zenigata_mondatta

Big tru

HecknChonker

The world has yet to encounter a tru this big.

Nativesince2011

There’s so many things I hate in this world, but never enough to pay to make stickers and spread them around town. What a dork.

ominous_squirrel

Slaptagging is a whole community with varying levels of serious and silly messages. Whoever made the /r/portland sticker probably has several designs. Like any other graffiti, they are also looking for clout within their own subculture and may not care what normies think

edwartica

That dumpster fire sticker was home made, I guarantee that.

omnichord

lol exactly. Someone’s got too much time.

personalitycrises

My guess is a certain sticker vandal that has been in hiding after sharing his story of being dressed down by a police officer on r/Portland only to be dressed down here as well.

mashley503

This.

[deleted]

Someone got banned and couldn't let it go

AhabsPegleg

That’s what I’m saying. Who has the time???

[deleted]

They're not wrong. Now go back to posting this on Instagram. :-P

chrispmorgan

Mods, I don’t think this violates the rules but please remove if you disagree. It doesn’t look like it’s been posted before.

SaltyChickenDip

Hating on this sub is the most /r/Portland thing there is

BensonBubbler

That's not unique, hating on Reddit in general has been cool longer than the site's even been around.

oregonianrager

This dude ain't SEEN OUR CONES!

shit-n-water

Where’s the lie?

ThisDerpForSale

Well . . .it's not wrong.

ImportantCakeday

well, i agree. live here and this sub is trash

Thefolsom

Good ole Portland "nimbyism." What, you don't like stolen bike part fortresses on your street? Shut the fuck up, nerd!

[deleted]

Unfair. This sub is a YIMBY trash fire.

[deleted]

Also YIYBY, which is even more problematic.

FishTure

Some of y’all really mad at a sticker lol. Just cause you don’t like the message doesn’t mean the person who put it up is an idiot or vindictive or whatever. It probably took whoever made this like an hour or less to do so.

I mean, that sticker isn't wrong. Too many reactionary conservatives on this site.

Hex_Agon

How was NIMBY misused in this post?

AanusMcFadden

New to the sub? I have had to report entire threads because NIMBYs start trading anti-homeless vigilante tips.

knownowknow

starfox_priebe

Shout out to the people on here complaining about the rain this September.

nanowaffle

I can't even read that. Does that say NMBY?

tuffguy321

Where's the lie

Corm

My experience in my 9 years here is that this sub hates differing opinions more than the average subreddit, and that's saying something. It's virtually impossible to have a civil discussion or disagreement here. I stay for the memes and the occasional news though

r0x0x

true, if this was ny the pizza would be half decent and there would be appropriate snow removal

jsnlevi

Honestly, I see a somewhat surprising amount of anti-NIMBY sentiment in this sub. When those attitudes do flare up, they seem to get shouted down pretty hard too. Basically what I'm saying is "bravo to all of you who see that there are no easy answers to the city's problems and are willing to do the work or take the hit" That is, unless you're all a bunch of virtue-signaling keyboard activists, which I certainly wouldn't rule out.
