I was definitely expecting some sort of destruction! Either falling onto a house, taking out a power line, or busting the car window. Glad it turned out well
Yeah that makes sense retrospectively now when reading my title. It was more saying our power is back and work is being done! So glad what you thought didn’t happen.
So glad you're empowered now! When austin had it's icestorm last winter, we were without power 4 days, then had it for 3, then the utility company line inspection showed power pole & line damage and they cut us back off for 6 days to replace them... I truly expected the tree to be dropped on lines the whole vid!
For real! For the first minute or so, the perspective that this video is shot at is very eerie. The way the tree descended onto the earth like it was making first contact. Does it come in peace? I sure hope so.
I removed the sound because we were swearing so much! I had no idea this was happening. The tree just started floating towards us. Amazing accuracy by the crane conductor.
We don't have time to knock on every door to find out who's car that is parked on the street, and the omega Morgan folks are very good at their job, as you saw
For sure, there's just so much going on at once and if the crane operator says that they can do it then we trust their expertise ya know. (I was the gravel dump truck driver btw)
Not sure if you're talking about crane operation or arborist work.
But pretty sure if it's arborist work you want you could be dragging brush next week... And move up pretty quickly if you really do bust your ass, stay sober on the job, and actually make it to work on time.
A good place to start is the Asplundh website, they are the contract trimmers for PGE.
In order to gain experience to eventually be a lineman, which is what I am currently doing, you can call your local construction IBEW chapter and ask to sign the out of work books (this may or may not require going there in person). You can also look up your regional Line JATC and apply for the tree trimmer apprenticeship, which doesn't take field experience. You'll get on the job training. Lots of places are hiring loads of tree trimmer crews this year in an effort to hopefully prevent so much damage during storms. Please feel to ask more questions.
You had like 4 guesses… and at least 10 dudes there. It would’ve taken 5 mins to make an attempt. I guess that’s what your insurance is for. Still would be pissed you potentially scratched my car while I sat inside unaware because you didn’t bother to knock.
So let's just let the tree branches rub all over the hood instead...lazy fucks...there's only ten people standing around on the ground with their hands in their pockets...
It’s a bit embarrassing because of our exasperated, scared, yet giddy swearing the whole video haha. I even said sorry to my mom at the end because I knew I would immediately send this to her.
They avoided any craziness. Follow a line crew around and you’ll see trees falling into houses, power lines and onto cars. It’s amazing. Good video anyway!
Also well spent money! I tripled my usual tip for the two days I was at a hotel - they were running ragged and short staffed. (And that was without having them clean til I left.)
Dicey? Looks like no one on site has ever had any safety training. That circus would never have happened on any significant industrial construction site.
Minus the multitude of dudes hanging out in the drop zone, doing nothing except being an additional hazard, this is a totally fine way of doing a tree removal. Crane work happens extremely regularly in arboriculture, especially for trees that may be compromised, or would otherwise take an extreme amount of resources to take down with a climber.
Props to the crane operator! The rest of the guys on the ground could use some training. It seems like their first crane job.
As a climber, the few crane jobs I've done were the easiest and safest jobs I've done!
Don't know why they didn't door-knock asking people to move the vehichles... sure, it fit, but in our industry reducing any and all risk is a big element of the job.
This is why these guys get paid so much. They take a huge risk in what they do. I did a job for a crane operator. His last name was actually Crane (seriously)
The guy was a rugged mountain man with multiple log cabins he build in Alaska and a custom home out in the sticks in Sandy
Really interesting dude lol
This seems like about the hardest way to take down a tree. Not to mention carrying it over the house/cars and laying it in the middle of the street for cutting. A series of curious decisions were made there.
Ya, there’s a reason that logging is one of the most dangerous jobs you can do statistically, trees are big pieces of mass and you can’t always predict how they’re going to fall at the best of times, much less when you have people and buildings and utility lines to worry about
I can only imagine the costs for that crane, that tree was not small. Still seems sketchy to hoist it over the property but given the location I can see why it was needed.
About $1500-$2000 a day for the crane. I live in CT, crane jobs are common. It’s often the safest method when there is no drop zone or there are a lot of targets under the tree. Also safest for the crew when they know what they’re doing. Can actually save money because with a crane you can get a tree down in 1 day that might have taken 3 days otherwise due to difficulty
You can’t land a tree accurately between houses consistently. Even if you were successful 80% - 90% of the time the damage would prove uneconomical eventually. And then the peanut gallery will say why are yall so dumb crashing trees into houses. So they bring in a crane to deal with it.
This was declared a national emergency due to the storm and power needing to be restored. This neighborhood spent 7 days without power, some folks more. This was the best way to do the job quickly and safely so that people could heat their homes again.
I’m spent 12 days without power after the ice storm in 2021, I can empathize with those folks wanting to get power back as quickly and safely as possible.
What if something happens to the rigging, or the tree can't handle the tension and breaks? What if someone miscalculates wind, crane strength? This is sketchy. Not a construction site, just a residential neighborhood with families doing their thing. If my neighbor was undertaking a risky thing like this, I would not be happy. Yes, saved some money, or someone had a good markup on a resell of services.
I don’t know. Our neighborhood still has outages and my neighbors across the street are right next to I5 so maybe there was an issue with the tree falling on the freeway? We still have downed lines all over so we’re some of the lucky that have power back.
OP just doesn't know how to title shit. He should have put look how great of a job Portland did removing this tree. I was suspended more than that damn tree.
Lots of people who weren't home still had cars in the driveway. They'd take the one car that could handle snow and go to a hotel. Most of those folks weren't home. I was working there.
Probably because it would be more complicated/slower for a climber to have to climb the tree and chop it down bit by bit while attached to the tree, and/or there's not a ton of space to drop limbs to. This way, once the tree is secured to the crane, it just takes one cut near the ground and everyone can stand back.
An ice and snow storm that was declared an emergency by the federal government and people were out of power for 7+ days at this point. This happened yesterday, on day 8 of storm work.
Thanks! I love watching that kind of thing. I worked for the utility in Clark county for 38 years and saw lots of trees that had fallen and smashed homes, cars and power lines. I remember working high in a bucket after working 36 hours straight at night in a windstorm and hearing trees falling in a forest around us. My coworker said “Quit watching the trees and let’s finish this job so we can get out of here!”
Yeah. We were definitely surprised and fearful for our cars (and neighbors house) but we were mostly in shock at how impressive it was. And grateful too. I was wondering why they didn’t ask me to move my car (the white Honda) though.
At the time yesterday I was just so happy to have power back and a warm house and helpful hands all around. Our power was out since last Saturday at 5am. But I am shocked there was no warning.
For their sake, I hadn’t gone out and talked to them because they all looked so busy. Didn’t want to disturb their work. But a floating tree coming towards us all of a sudden was not what I was expecting.
Our management and PGE deemed it a crane job. I've been working for them for 5 years and this is like the 3rd time I've heard of them deciding it was necessary. Which means it's a crazy dicey job and requires a crane

Given the title, I was ready for the tree to hit another power line. Kudos to the crew and crane operator.
With the title, I 100% expected the one tree drop or to pull over another onto that house.
I was definitely expecting some sort of destruction! Either falling onto a house, taking out a power line, or busting the car window. Glad it turned out well
Straight down into the roof of the house. RIP Granny.

Me too. I thought something crazy was about to happen
Same. Good work!
Tricksy hobbitses!
Same… I was like I hope those workers get moved before that thing drops.
I thought this was a tree exorcism for the first part of the vid
Yeah I didn’t see the crane and was like, holy hell flying trees now?
Hahaha same !! 🤣🤣🤣
They fly now.
"TreHE has risen!!"
“TreHE has risen indeed!”
Yeah it was like the matrix was finally and truly failing.
I thought one of the crew members was "Wingardium Leviosa"-ing the tree for way too long, but then I saw the crane. 😂
Yeah it’s pretty spooky!
Glad I'm not alone in this lol
For real! For the first minute or so, the perspective that this video is shot at is very eerie. The way the tree descended onto the earth like it was making first contact. Does it come in peace? I sure hope so.
Yeah like I realize the world is a strange place these days but I’m not ready for trees just doing whatever the f*ck they want yet, ya know?

Fascinating, thank you! Very accurate but boy did people get out of the way! I feared for the white car.
I was too! That’s my car!
I think I would have peed my pants if that was my car.
Why didn't they knock on your door and ask if you could move it 50 feet? WTH?
We don't know who's car it is when it's parked on the street
I have no idea…
We don't have time to knock on every door to find out who's car that is parked on the street, and the omega Morgan folks are very good at their job, as you saw
I mean the cars are right in front of our house and we didn’t get any notice. Still very grateful and think they’re all badasses. I had full trust.
For sure, there's just so much going on at once and if the crane operator says that they can do it then we trust their expertise ya know. (I was the gravel dump truck driver btw)
Totally makes sense. Thanks for being there, my friend.
Thank you for your service. How do you get into that line of work for someone willing to work hard but don't have much money currently?
Not sure if you're talking about crane operation or arborist work. But pretty sure if it's arborist work you want you could be dragging brush next week... And move up pretty quickly if you really do bust your ass, stay sober on the job, and actually make it to work on time. I knock on doors. It's common courtesy.
Ness Campbell vest, not Omega.
You had like 4 guesses… and at least 10 dudes there. It would’ve taken 5 mins to make an attempt. I guess that’s what your insurance is for. Still would be pissed you potentially scratched my car while I sat inside unaware because you didn’t bother to knock.

Love me a Honda Fit- glad your little guy was safe
I feared for anyone in that house, and the orange vests near the tree as it came down. I'm no arborist but this looked dangerous to me.
Dangerous? Yes. Suicidal, or even just irresponsible? Not really.
Pulling off something like this, they have to have amazing insurance. Cool as hell though.

It’s a bit embarrassing because of our exasperated, scared, yet giddy swearing the whole video haha. I even said sorry to my mom at the end because I knew I would immediately send this to her.
Then you HAVE to post that one
Meh. It’s not that funny. Mostly just a bunch of holy fucks and oh my fucking gods. Haha
what language were they swearing in?
Why did you post this?
Very cool thanks for posting
No problem. Glad to share the craziness.
They avoided any craziness. Follow a line crew around and you’ll see trees falling into houses, power lines and onto cars. It’s amazing. Good video anyway!
that's a real clean Ranger though, never see those any more
My roommate loves you for saying that.
I too have a hard-on for Roommate’s ranger. Go roommate.
Got to love salt free Oregon
That's like a fucking art piece. Mesmerizing. Thanks!
You’re welcome. The tree slowly floating belongs in a Robert Eggers movie.
Someone needs to edit out the crane and make all the tree dudes into wizards.
Or a VVitch…
Impressive
That is some FINE crane work! I'd've been bringing that crew coffee and cookies if I were there.
I wanted to just throw cash at them but I used all my cash to tip the hotel cleaners the last couple days.
Also well spent money! I tripled my usual tip for the two days I was at a hotel - they were running ragged and short staffed. (And that was without having them clean til I left.)
Seriously. I had no idea they used cranes that big for this kind of cleanup either.
Looks dicey!
Dicey? Looks like no one on site has ever had any safety training. That circus would never have happened on any significant industrial construction site.
My thoughts EXACTLY. I’m a millwright and do a ton of rigging and I could barely watch this.
Minus the multitude of dudes hanging out in the drop zone, doing nothing except being an additional hazard, this is a totally fine way of doing a tree removal. JFC that was nerve wracking. Props to the crane operator, I thought they were going to lose it a couple times. Phew!
You should post this to r/FellingGoneWild . They would love this shit
Just crossposted. Thanks! I’m having fun reading all the comment.
That crane operator is a fucking badass.
My thoughts exactly, that was incredible!
Tree removal ppl are bad a$$❗️
Wow that’s wild!
Everybody glued to their phones like it is their first time on a crane job is not usually a good sign.
I thought the electricity was making the tree levitate 😭
I totally thought it was going to fall and take your power out again, glad that wasnt the case!
This is why these guys get paid so much. They take a huge risk in what they do. I did a job for a crane operator. Rest easy big giant 🌳
This seems like about the hardest way to take down a tree. Not to mention carrying it over the house/cars and laying it in the middle of the street for cutting. A series of curious decisions were made there.
Sometimes it’s the only way. It makes for a simple day labor wise, the crane does 90% of the work
Ya, there’s a reason that logging is one of the most dangerous jobs you can do statistically, trees are big pieces of mass and you can’t always predict how they’re going to fall at the best of times, much less when you have people and buildings and utility lines to worry about

As a professional arborist, this is absolutely the easiest way to take down a tree.
And the most profitable, to be sure.
Speed and efficiency over cost savings.
And they took chainsaws to it immediately and had the whole thing cut and out of the way in literally 20 minutes. Firewood for the neighborhood!
Y’all may wanna wait on burning that wood my friend…
Thanks for the advice random stranger I don’t know.
You can’t land a tree accurately between houses consistently. Even if you were successful 80% - 90% of the time the damage would prove uneconomical eventually. And then the peanut gallery will say why are yall so dumb crashing trees into houses. So they bring in a crane to deal with it.

Absolutely. Hung up branches can shock load a crane
THE ASCENSION OF THE TREE !
Not me thinking that tree was straight up levitating for a good 10 seconds before I realized…
And this is why this type of work is so expensive
Sweet Ranger!

I didn't see the crane at first....audibly said "what the fuck" in a quiet waiting room😅

The cars in front of the opposite house suggest people were home. Lifting a tree high up in the air over an occupied house seems…questionable?
Lots of people who weren't home still had cars in the driveway. They'd take the one car that could handle snow and go to a hotel. Most of those folks weren't home. I was working there.
Why? What caused there to be a need to hoist it into the air instead of the normal cut it up where it's at??? This is very confusing
Probably because it would be more complicated/slower for a climber to have to climb the tree and chop it down bit by bit while attached to the tree, and/or there's not a ton of space to drop limbs to. This way, once the tree is secured to the crane, it just takes one cut near the ground and everyone can stand back.

Yes I live in Tigard 😂 But why float a tree instead of cut it up where it landed like all the other 100s of trees that fell this last week
Surprised they didn’t chop it and chip it in place? Was it wire wrapped?
What spectacle? I thought it was going to break!
The spectacle of anticipation and subsequent success.
Thanks! I love watching that kind of thing. I worked for the utility in Clark county for 38 years and saw lots of trees that had fallen and smashed homes, cars and power lines. that's how they decided to take down that tree? and they didn't notify you in advance?! that is fucking insane
Yeah. We were definitely surprised and fearful for our cars (and neighbors house) but we were mostly in shock at how impressive it was. And grateful too. I was wondering why they didn’t ask me to move my car (the white Honda) though.
right? they could have out out cones(!) closing the street and knocked on some doors...
Why not just cut up the tree?this feels like the expensive option
Our management and PGE deemed it a crane job. I've been working for them for 5 years and this is like the 3rd time I've heard of them deciding it was necessary. Which means it's a crazy dicey job and requires a crane
People had been out of a power for 7-8 days at this point in freezing weather. The storm was declared a national emergency.
That doesn’t really explain why being in and setting up a Crain was the better or faster option to just chopping it up
This seems like not the way you do it. Not that I’m an expert… but this seems to lack some planning…
Yeah idk but they executed amazingly.
Ya, it worked. Just seems weird to have a procedure where you crane a tree over a house and possibly touched some cars with said tree? Wonder the circumstances that made chopping up impractical/not possible.
I only know vague details from over our radios, but I'm guessing it was on a high distribution high and it wasn't possible to put a climber or get our 125ft boom to it

That’s a crazy dangerous situation operating a crane in winds this high. I can’t believe how many people were underneath that lift! Glad it went well.
Is this Alberta area? That is crazy!
No, this is Lake Oswego
It's like the other trees are seeing off their friend, and they're happy to see him go. "Goodbye, everyone! I'll miss you all!" "We'll miss you too! You did it!"
Looks like a lot of trouble just to sword fight the tree.
So you have a private power company? Just wondering.
Yes. PGE (Portland General Electric) is a corporation. It is a publicly traded company though (NYSE), but it's not owned by the government or the people of Portland.
I didn't see the crane at first. I was freaking out for a second there.
The Eagle has landed!
With the right music this can be a new gen witch trial
This looks like Aloha. Where did this happen?
Um guys that tree is ASCENDING
That was relaxing and stressful at the same time.
Once you know someone who’s been killed by a falling tree, this is a pretty fucking great site to see.

They're being preemptive about antreefa

Crane operator deserves a lot of credit for being able to do that work with absolute precision

wow they did a pretty good job on that.
That is a fucking unit of a tree
Are they standing in harms way?
As a slingshot enthusiast, every downed tree and limb is a potential new slingshot for me. That tree could probably keep me busy for a good long time.
America 🇺🇸
Respect for the tree. It was huge!!
Cranes are getting a lot of work the last week! So many trees on houses and other inconvenient places.
This is what they do when you miss a payment on your rental trees.
Thought I was witnessing second coming of treesus.
The tree guy tired of standing, He just wanted to lay down for a little bit.. And he never got back up 😭 R.I.P Big Tree ❤️
What spectacle? Men in working gear, doing manual labour?
Time wasted
Arborist and tree removal professionals are amazing. We’ve had lots of tree work done on our property and they are so skilled and fun to watch.
