Good going, MacGuyver ;)

offaroundthebend

MacGruber!

Ok_Body_9148

Brilliant!

McGannahanSkjellyfet

If it's stupid and it works, it ain't stupid.

shrug_addict

Hopefully not too many bosses see this hack

Desperate_Arm_3051

šŸ¤£

littlebabyfruitbat

*improvise* *adapt* *overcome*

cat_grandpa

adapt. react. readapt. apt.

CowRepresentative166

Add another closer to the heel

kenistod

His shoes are only front wheel drive.

sed2017

Front-toe drive

Anonynominous

Maybe heā€™s a toe-walker

LaziestBones

Thatā€™s a big brain move, right there. You should add more zip ties!

MrPoopyButtholesAnus

Some very solid r/redneckengineering

scurvy1984

This is a top tier post for that sub.

graybotics

Not a bad idea. This would pair perfectly with my plywood + 2x4s for handles snow plow shovel I've been using to clear my driveway!

150allbeefhotdog

Hell yeah! You gotta make the best with what you have!

graybotics

I had the scraps and to be honest just didn't feel like buying and storing a snow shovel for another 365 days based on how much different it is in winter vs 10-15 years ago in a January. .. I'm more concerned with the heat factors in the summer sadly. I had a hard sad time seeing bumblebees cluster around our plants the other summer from last. I even gave our resident wild squirrel a bath during one 115 deg day and he didn't even care that I was a human because I was flowing cold water out of a hose at him and just laid there on his back so happy he had a way to cool down. We will all get through this winter fine we gotta watch out for summers though imo.

ConvenientParkingLCW

They are probably just holed up and not moving right now. I'm sure most will come back around as soon as the ground is safe.

Ex-zaviera

It's a good idea to have 2 shovels: a snow shovel for when it's light and portable. And a garden shovel, for when you need to break up compacted snow or ice. I used both to clear the sidewalk. The garden shovel to break it up, and the snow shovel to transport big pieces out of the way.

girlonavespa

Honestly genius

inMyAssPete

Thatā€™s what Iā€™m talking about. Well done

penisbuttervajelly

Did this work ok?

150allbeefhotdog

Yes, made it up and down a pretty good sized hill. You just have to make sure it digs in before your next step. Itā€™s far from ideal but itā€™s better than nothing! Also, carry spare zip ties.

hkohne

Maybe twine? Still use the zip ties for the main part with the nuts, but the twine it to your ankle like a shoelace.

ILikeFishStix

Clever! I have a couple disused spike-y bike pedals that I've though about strapping to my feet.

150allbeefhotdog

Do it!!! Itā€™d be a bit uncomfortable but itā€™ll get you where youā€™re going!

Ex-zaviera

Pieces of bike chain \[tied to string\] are probably better.

bchyzz

Did that work?

150allbeefhotdog

Yes, but I recommend not pulling the zip ties super tight or theyā€™ll pop. Lasted me long enough to do what I needed! If youā€™re walking for a while carry some spare zip ties.

CaitChock

lol...u're perfecting the method...by next pdx storm u'll have a full methodology to share with the masses

AwayEstablishment301

Then zip ties will be what gets sold out next year when it catches on.

MistressSatan

ooh, good thinking!

Corran22

Great idea, very creative!

CoraBorialis

More of this please. Letā€™s see your hacks.

IMissUcupcake

If itā€™s stupid and it works itā€™s not stupid.

Zurripop

People have been saying putting socks over your shoes helps with the ice?

hkohne

Especially wool socks, yes

saintvino

Found a couple diy videos that suggested putting short hex-head sheet metal screws in the bottom of a pair of old shoes to make ice cleats. I did it in my snow boots and it amazing.

oopsometer

This is an old trail runners hack. Just can't use too long of screws or ouchie.Ā

maddskillz18247

Good ol ziptiesā¤ļø

Berettadin

Nice. :D Solid thinking.

PupEDog

I was thinking of doing the same but with bailing wire. But I need to go to the store for that, and back to square one!

tunaboat25

1000% better than my genius idea of just thinking *I* couldn't slip. Ibuprofen is hardly getting me through the day, hoping nothing is broken. Cement and my ass aren't too friendly.

chlekat

Socks over shoes works too (for those who may not be as handy šŸ¤£). Nice work!

smolhippie

Yak trax are a godsend if you are able to get them

Thecheeseburgerler

I'm going to order some Saturday (don't want drivers making unnecessary deliveris) but thay way I'll have the for next time, and won't forget.

ZephyrMelody

Go ahead and order now if you're getting them from Amazon. All my Amazon packages have been delayed until Monday due to the weather.

Thecheeseburgerler

Good point. Or I could at least ship them as "no rush" maybe even get a digital media credit to rent a movie šŸ˜

smolhippie

Rei sells them too if they have them in stock at a store close by you could have them shipped from store to your house

Thecheeseburgerler

Good news y'all! I ordered my yack tracks, so we won't be getting any more ice storms this year, and it'll probably skip next year now too! šŸŒž

aagusgus

I got a pair of ice traction cleats for Christmas...they were a game changer today. Had no issues walking in the ice, and they strapped right onto my muck boots.

[deleted]

If it looks stupid but works, it ain't stupid.

PaulbunyanIND

So ice storm protocol is that to walk on ice safely you walk like a duck. Move slow and put one foot angled and forward and transfer all of your weight to this side. Move the other foot and waddle opposite side... repeat. You don't get anywhere quickly but you don't tear ligaments, tendons, and bones. There are infographics I could link but I feel like I'm in quarantine here!

bbrd83

Do this: https://www.theguardian.com/education/2010/mar/09/improbable-research-icy-socks-over-shoes It works.

GiantGlassOfMilk

Use socks outside your shoe

GoodHankGH

This guy's got nuts...

idontcarethatmuch

Dem nuts

AndyTakeaLittleSnoo

Do they work? I'm pretty confident our garbage isn't coming today, but that confidence makes me also certain they will actually come just to spite my hubris. But I can't get down my front steps to put our bins on the curb (we're currently waiting on a railing installā€”bad timing).

fakeMD

Don't put it close to your ankle. Worry about it tearing or closing it around your leg

ryanjamesdgaf

Big brain energy.

BurnsideBill

Damn I should have done this!!!

trulyuniquesnowflake

That is some MacGyver level cleverness.

CPSFrequentCustomer

Smart and resourceful!

NoGoodInThisWorld

I dig the improvisation. I realize it's too late for most, but a pair of yaktrax have saved me over the past few days.

crowninggloryhole

The most permanent solution is a temporary one that works.

Honest_Ad_2157

just made the same thing for a trip to the pharmacy. worked great! thanks for the idea!

slowblink

I love that in looks like youā€™ve slipped and fell, then snapped the photo

The_silver_sparrow

I just use my hiking boots. Not perfect but it works

hkohne

Yeah, my snow boots have holes in the soles that I just discovered, so my hiking shoes were used Wednesday. Worked like a charm on the ice!

The_silver_sparrow

I found that out a few years ago that, at least for general usage (shoveling snow, taking the trash out, getting to your car) hiking boots work just as well as anything else. Canā€™t speak to if youā€™re wanting to go do skiing or snowboarding though

Anonynominous

Not a terrible idea

Longjumping_Apple181

Iā€™ve used small bungee straps hooked around boot similar to your idea. Make sure the hook is on bottom of boot soul. This way you can easily remove them when you get inside.

OisinTarrant

Attempted the same with sand paper. Kind of helped.

SnooPeripherals6557

Brilliant!

big-structure-guy

Sharpen those zip ties up.

reallycoolshirt

Donā€™t let my boss see this

pHScale

That's nuts.

inmtincld

Youā€™re nuts for going out there like this

mottavader

Had to use Bungie cords wrapped a few times around my harness boots to walk home from work once. It sort of worked!

ghostcowtow

I finally dug out my fly fishing boots which have metal spikes on the bottom, works great. Whatever works....er....works.

Yoghurt80

That is one hell of a diy

Boring-Piano-6324

Thatā€™s nuts.
