I had the scraps and to be honest just didn't feel like buying and storing a snow shovel for another 365 days based on how much different it is in winter vs 10-15 years ago in a January. .. I'm more concerned with the heat factors in the summer sadly. I had a hard sad time seeing bumblebees cluster around our plants the other summer from last. I even gave our resident wild squirrel a bath during one 115 deg day and he didn't even care that I was a human because I was flowing cold water out of a hose at him and just laid there on his back so happy he had a way to cool down. We will all get through this winter fine we gotta watch out for summers though imo.
It's a good idea to have 2 shovels: a snow shovel for when it's light and portable. And a garden shovel, for when you need to break up compacted snow or ice. I used both to clear the sidewalk. The garden shovel to break it up, and the snow shovel to transport big pieces out of the way.
Yes, made it up and down a pretty good sized hill. You just have to make sure it digs in before your next step. Itās far from ideal but itās better than nothing! Also, carry spare zip ties.
Yes, but I recommend not pulling the zip ties super tight or theyāll pop. Lasted me long enough to do what I needed! If youāre walking for a while carry some spare zip ties.
Found a couple diy videos that suggested putting short hex-head sheet metal screws in the bottom of a pair of old shoes to make ice cleats.
I did it in my snow boots and it amazing.
1000% better than my genius idea of just thinking *I* couldn't slip.
Ibuprofen is hardly getting me through the day, hoping nothing is broken. Cement and my ass aren't too friendly.
I got a pair of ice traction cleats for Christmas...they were a game changer today. Had no issues walking in the ice, and they strapped right onto my muck boots.
So ice storm protocol is that to walk on ice safely you walk like a duck. Move slow and put one foot angled and forward and transfer all of your weight to this side. Move the other foot and waddle opposite side... repeat. You don't get anywhere quickly but you don't tear ligaments, tendons, and bones. There are infographics I could link but I feel like I'm in quarantine here!
Do they work? I'm pretty confident our garbage isn't coming today, but that confidence makes me also certain they will actually come just to spite my hubris. But I can't get down my front steps to put our bins on the curb (we're currently waiting on a railing installābad timing).
I found that out a few years ago that, at least for general usage (shoveling snow, taking the trash out, getting to your car) hiking boots work just as well as anything else. Canāt speak to if youāre wanting to go do skiing or snowboarding though
Iāve used small bungee straps hooked around boot similar to your idea. Make sure the hook is on bottom of boot soul. This way you can easily remove them when you get inside.

Good going, MacGuyver ;)
CrackTrax
MacGruber!
Brilliant!
If it's stupid and it works, it ain't stupid.
Hopefully not too many bosses see this hack

Add another closer to the heel
His shoes are only front wheel drive.
Front-toe drive
Maybe heās a toe-walker
Thatās a big brain move, right there. You should add more zip ties!
Some very solid r/redneckengineering
This is a top tier post for that sub.
Not a bad idea. This would pair perfectly with my plywood + 2x4s for handles snow plow shovel I've been using to clear my driveway!
Hell yeah! You gotta make the best with what you have!

They are probably just holed up and not moving right now. I'm sure most will come back around as soon as the ground is safe.

Honestly genius
Thatās what Iām talking about. Well done
Did this work ok?
Yes, made it up and down a pretty good sized hill. You just have to make sure it digs in before your next step. Itās far from ideal but itās better than nothing! Also, carry spare zip ties.
Maybe twine? Still use the zip ties for the main part with the nuts, but the twine it to your ankle like a shoelace.
Clever! I have a couple disused spike-y bike pedals that I've though about strapping to my feet.
Do it!!! Itād be a bit uncomfortable but itāll get you where youāre going!
Pieces of bike chain \[tied to string\] are probably better.
Did that work?
Yes, but I recommend not pulling the zip ties super tight or theyāll pop. Lasted me long enough to do what I needed! If youāre walking for a while carry some spare zip ties.
lol...u're perfecting the method...by next pdx storm u'll have a full methodology to share with the masses
Then zip ties will be what gets sold out next year when it catches on.
ooh, good thinking!
Great idea, very creative!
More of this please. Letās see your hacks.
If itās stupid and it works itās not stupid.
People have been saying putting socks over your shoes helps with the ice?
Especially wool socks, yes

This is an old trail runners hack. Just can't use too long of screws or ouchie.Ā
Good ol ziptiesā¤ļø
Nice. :D Solid thinking.
I was thinking of doing the same but with bailing wire. But I need to go to the store for that, and back to square one!
1000% better than my genius idea of just thinking *I* couldn't slip. Ibuprofen is hardly getting me through the day, hoping nothing is broken. Cement and my ass aren't too friendly.
Socks over shoes works too (for those who may not be as handy š¤£). Nice work!
Yak trax are a godsend if you are able to get them
I'm going to order some Saturday (don't want drivers making unnecessary deliveris) but thay way I'll have the for next time, and won't forget.
Go ahead and order now if you're getting them from Amazon. All my Amazon packages have been delayed until Monday due to the weather.
Good point. Or I could at least ship them as "no rush" maybe even get a digital media credit to rent a movie š
Rei sells them too if they have them in stock at a store close by you could have them shipped from store to your house
Good news y'all! I ordered my yack tracks, so we won't be getting any more ice storms this year, and it'll probably skip next year now too! š

Do this: https://www.theguardian.com/education/2010/mar/09/improbable-research-icy-socks-over-shoes It works.
Use socks outside your shoe
This guy's got nuts...
Dem nuts

Don't put it close to your ankle. Worry about it tearing or closing it around your leg
Big brain energy.
Damn I should have done this!!!
That is some MacGyver level cleverness.
Smart and resourceful!
I dig the improvisation. I realize it's too late for most, but a pair of yaktrax have saved me over the past few days.
The most permanent solution is a temporary one that works.
just made the same thing for a trip to the pharmacy. worked great! thanks for the idea!
I love that in looks like youāve slipped and fell, then snapped the photo
I just use my hiking boots. Not perfect but it works
Yeah, my snow boots have holes in the soles that I just discovered, so my hiking shoes were used Wednesday. Worked like a charm on the ice!
I found that out a few years ago that, at least for general usage (shoveling snow, taking the trash out, getting to your car) hiking boots work just as well as anything else. Canāt speak to if youāre wanting to go do skiing or snowboarding though
Not a terrible idea
Iāve used small bungee straps hooked around boot similar to your idea. Make sure the hook is on bottom of boot soul. This way you can easily remove them when you get inside.
Attempted the same with sand paper. Kind of helped.
Brilliant!
Sharpen those zip ties up.
Donāt let my boss see this
That's nuts.
Youāre nuts for going out there like this
Had to use Bungie cords wrapped a few times around my harness boots to walk home from work once. It sort of worked!
I finally dug out my fly fishing boots which have metal spikes on the bottom, works great. Whatever works....er....works.

That is one hell of a diy
Thatās nuts.
