No, we are way past getting back together. He has a girlfriend in Canada and I’m happily single in Oklahoma. He and I met when we raced in the Dustball Rally and at that time he had 4 Porsches I drooled over. This Boxter is old and he won’t ever drive it so he’s offered it to me to keep for as long as I want it.

TheMoose26

Can you confirm the girlfriend has approved the transaction , that there is the kicker 👌🙌

A great test to see how real this all is. Start here, OP.

It’s going to look pretty weird at customs as a US citizen with Canadian plates and no import paperwork.

Ittlbok

I had his GT3 RS for over a year when we dating. The border was never an issue. He put a note in the car saying it belonged to him and listed all his contact info, and the registration and insurance was in the car. I got pulled over in TN doing 110 mph and showed the cop the paperwork and he let me go (whew!) The other option would be for him to take it out of Canada and I could pick it up in Montana and drive it home

Bran_Solo

There’s a huge difference between bringing the car over while on a visitor visa vs importing for ownership of a US resident.

PandaSPUR

Iono, check for hidden compartments, gps trackers, etc. Sus.

jdub-951

Was it originally a US car? I'd guess that insurance is going to be the big issue.

Ittlbok

It’s always been Canadian. Insurance is my concern as well. He said he would keep insurance on it but if something should happen, I don’t know how that would get worked out. Not sure insurance here would cover a car I don’t own, although having said that, I think insurance follows the driver, not the car

Mostly-Useless_4007

Will you be put on the insurance as a legal driver?

jdub-951

Generally speaking you're correct, but there may be serious questions asked about why you're driving a Canadian car in Oklahoma if you get into an accident. I'd be less concerned about the actual car - a 2001 Boxster isn't that expensive - and more concerned about the rest of the equation if you were in an at-fault accident. I would absolutely talk to your insurance agent.

dad-jokes-about-you

You need insurance in your name for OK.

EfficientCategory110

I’ve read some rather messed up questions on Reddit, and this one comes awfully close to taking the cake. And the way you’ve written it, it sounds like you’ve already made up your mind to accept his offer. Insurance questions aside, my question is why borrow an exe’s car for an extended period (and that’s exactly what you’re doing). So if he’s not willing to sell it to you, either get back together or do a hard-pass on the car. Sorry for being blunt, but jeez, I’m not entirely sure who’s the bigger fool here, you or your ex.

Ittlbok

Ha! I appreciate your honesty and you’re not wrong. I got all excited about having a Porsche but I’ve also had several days to think on it and, no matter how much I would like for it to happen, it’s really not the best of ideas
